Akshay Kumar tops advance tax payment in B’wood

MUMBAI: After the deadline for paying the final installment of advance tax for both corporates and individuals expired on 15 March, Akshay Kumar has emerged as Bollywood‘s top advance taxpayer for the sixth consecutive year when he paid Rs 180 million.

Last year Akshay gave a series of hits in films like Special 26, Khiladi 786, Housefull 2, Rowdy Rathore and Oh My God!

Close on the heels of Akshay Kumar was Salman Khan who paid Rs 110 million. The actor had two big releases viz Ek Tha Tiger and Dabangg 2 that totally made more than Rs 2.5 billion at the box office in 2012.

While Shah Rukh Khan paid Rs 105 million, Aamir Khan returned with a seven-fold year-on-year increase by paying Rs 75 million. Shahid Kapoor‘s tax payout remained unchanged at Rs 10 million this year.

Among Bollywood‘s leading ladies, Katrina Kaif paid the highest tax of Rs 45 million while Kareena Kapoor Khan is said to have paid Rs 40 million. Priyanka Chopra paid Rs 20 million.

About 1.35 million returns were filed between 10 February and 10 March, an increase of more than 15 per cent over the 1.08 million returns filed in the year-ago period.

  • ‘Khiladi 786’ premiere catapults Colors to No. 2

MUMBAI: Events and movie premieres have always helped the Hindi general entertainment channels (GECs) to attract more audiences than they usually do. This time it’s Colors that has gained from this strategy.

Colors had premiered Akshay Kumar-starrer ‘Khiladi 786’ on 23 January that rated a whopping 5.1 TVR for a three-hour run. The first airing of the movie on Indian television not only contributed around 30 GRPs to the channel’s overall week’s collection of 235 GRPs (last week 205) but also propelled it to the No. 2 spot in the Hindi GEC hierarchy.

The other movie premieres this year on Hindi GECs were ‘Son of Sardar’ that recorded 3.9 TVR on Star Plus and ‘Student of the Year’ that registered a TVR of 4.2 on Sony Entertainment Television (Set).

Star Plus continued to maintain its leadership position in the genre, despite the loss of 11 GRPs in the week ended 23 February. As per TAM data (HSM including 5 new LC1 markets, C&S, 4+) sourced from a channel, Star Plus clocked 248 GRPs as few of its shows lost eyeballs. Its recently launched celebrity dancing reality show ‘Nach Baliye’ recorded 2.3 TVR (last week 2.9).

Meanwhile, Zee TV added five GRPs to its last week’s tally but slipped to No.3 position. The channel had launched a new reality show ‘India‘s Best Dramebaaz’ that notched 3.5 TVR.

Incidentally, ‘India’s Best Dramebaaz’ was the highest rated non-fiction show of the week, followed by Nach Baliye.

After ‘Dance India Dance’ and ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’, ‘India’s Best Dramebaaz’ is Zee TV’s homegrown talent hunt show that grooms kids as actors and tests their creativity, spontaneity and acting ability. The other shows of the channel have seen marginal difference in their ratings.

Week 8 of 2013 was good for Set as it added 24 GRPs to collect 188 points in its kitty. The channel had aired its annual Bollywood Award property, ‘Filmfare Awards’ that got a rating of 3.6 TVR for a four-hour run on 17 February, contributing to around 29 GRPs to the channel.

The other award shows that have aired on competing channels so far this year are Zee Cine Awards on Zee TV and Colors Screen Awards on Colors. Both the shows clocked 3.9 TVR in their first airing.

Life OK continues to be at No.5 as it closed the week with 144 GRPs (last week 142), while Sab followed with 138 GRPs (last week 136).

Sahara One with 24 GRPs (last week 26) remained at the bottom of the ladder.

Matru ki Bjli ka Mandola fails to thunder at the box office

MUMBAI: Vishal Bharadwaj‘s Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola has belied expectations that it would be a blockbuster. The film also could not cash in on its solo release status following the postponement of Kamal Haasan‘s Vishwaroopam, which was slated to release the same day.

Opening the film for paid previews on 10 January, a day before its exhaustive release went against the film as the bad reports percolated fast leading to a relatively poor opening on Friday. The film could not pick up momentum even on Saturday and Sunday and went on to close its opening weekend with Rs 203 million, way short of being a chartbuster.

Table No 21 safely saw its way through in the first week and collected Rs 95.2 million, adding another Rs 11 million during the second weekend to take its ten-day total to Rs 106.2 million.

Dabangg 2 collected Rs 108 million for week three. The film‘s total collection now now stands at Rs 1.42 billion.

Khiladi 786 has added a symbolic Rs 3.5 million for its fifth week to collect a total of Rs 661.5 million.

  • Salman magic works on the box office yet again

Salman magic works on the box office yet again

MUMBAI: There were no releases on the last Friday of 2012 leaving the week open for Salman Khan starrer Dabangg2. The film, which was given an exhaustive release with as many as 3,500 screens and multiple shows per day as well as an increase in admission rates, collected Rs 995 million in its first week.

While the number of screens remained high in the second week, the ticket rates were pared to the normal. The film has collected about Rs 190 million taking its 10-day total to Rs 1.16 billion. The film is the sequel to Dabangg which released in 2011. The second instalment of Chulbul Pandey‘s heroics is also the debut ground for Salman Khan‘s brother Arbaaz Khan. The 2011 film was directed by Abhinav Kashyap.

Akshay Kumar and Asin starrer Khiladi 786 added Rs 11.5 million to its tally in its third week taking its total to 647.5 million.

Amir Khan’s suspense thriller Talaash collected Rs 10.5 million in its fourth week taking its total collection to Rs 938.1 million.

The first Friday of January is as a rule avoided by major filmmakers as the record over the years has been that a film released on the day turns out a flop. However, the first Friday of 2013 has four films lined up for release of which one, Table No 21, holds some interest due to the presence of Paresh Rawal in the cast. The exhibition trade, however, holds more hope from 11 January when Vishal Bhardwaj’s Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola is slated for release along with Kamal Haasan’s Vishwaroopam.

  • Khiladi 786 recovers from opening day lull

Khiladi 786 recovers from opening day lull

MUMBAI: Two indistinct films, Myoho and Cigarette Ki Tarah, released last Friday with limited engagement. Due to lack of audience support, the shows had to be cancelled and screenings replaced with other features at most places.

Khiladi 786, carrying forward the Akshay Kumar Khiladi brand, had a weak first day but made up over Saturday and Sunday and maintained well at single screens to end its first week at Rs 472 million. However, the long term position for the film is average at best.

Talaash sustained in its second week thanks to Aamir Khan fans who need to watch his film once. The film collected Rs 169 million standing up to mass appealing Khiladi 786 and taking its two-week total to Rs 849.6 million.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan collected Rs 4.2 million in its fourth week just about marking the end of its run. Its 31-day total collection stood at Rs 1.21 billion.

Son Of Sardar ran out of steam in its fourth week collecting a symbolic Rs 1.5 million and coming to the end of its run with a total of Rs 1.04 billion.

Dabangg 2, the most awaited film of the year, hits 21 December to cash in on the super success of Dabangg and the Christmas week holidays. With big names and film not living up to expectation in last couple of months, the public‘s enthusiasm for the film is in measured tones. However, the exhibitors at single screens as well as multiplexes are very hopeful of the film what with Salman Khan riding at the pinnacle at present! The film is getting lucrative terms in the form of minimum guarantees (MGs) and advances from the theatres.

Khiladi 786 collects Rs 339 mn in 1st weekend

MUMBAI: Akshay Kumar and Asin starrer Khiladi 786, which had encouraging first show figures, could not sustain well through Friday. The collections improved on Saturday and Sunday for the film to show a reasonable weekend of Rs 339 million. The film is sustaining better at single screens and faces no opposition in the coming week which may help it to some extent.

Aamir Khan’s Talaash ended its first week with figures of Rs 680.6 million, mainly on the strength of multiplexes. The film added another Rs 111 million for the second weekend to take its 10-day total to Rs 791.6 million.

Ang Lee’s Life Of Pi continues to do well at major centres. The film collected Rs 38 million in its second week, thereby taking its tally to Rs 238 million.

  • Khiladi 786 a fairly enjoyable fare

Khiladi 786 a fairly enjoyable fare

MUMBAI: Khiladi 786 is the eighth in the Khiladi series and as it was with earlier ones, this too has nothing in common with the other films of the same name. Khiladi is more like shorthand for Akahsy Kumar and though his character is from Punjab, the “786” in the title serves two purposes: it provides a title that is ready to use for an Akshay film and also to attract the Muslim audience.

Besides the 786 factor, the film’s other main characters also represent communities; Himesh Reshammiya is from a typical Gujarati family while Mithun Chakraborty and Asin are Maharashtrian. Not surprising considering Western India and North make up for over 70 per cent of box office revenues.

Since his debut film as the lead, Saugandh, every maker has made sure that Akshay’s entry scene is claptrap. Khiladi 786 keeps the tradition alive as Akshay takes on a bunch of toughies and renders them harmless at the speed of light. A claptrap narration follows: ‘Duniyamein teen cheezen hoti zaroor hai lekin kisi ne dekhin nahin … bhooton ka sansar, sacha wala pyar aur 72 Singh ki raftaar’; 72 Singh being Akshay’s character in the film.

An equally dramatic entry scene is devised for Asin as she takes one of her suitors on a spin around town in her car at a suicidal speed to scare him away.

Reshammiya’s family business is matchmaking. His father, Manoj Joshi has set a target of arranging 500 matches in his lifetime. However, Reshammiya plays the spoiler on most occasions as wittingly or unwittingly he gives away the lies Joshi uses to arrange matches, including manipulating horoscope charts. After one such blunder by Reshammiya, which breaks up a marriage which is already under way, Joshi has had enough and throws his son out. Reshammiya takes refuge with his friend, Sanjay Mishra, an undertaker and provider of Hindu last rites. Even as Reshammiya is venting his frustrations to his friend, Asin’s speeding car hits a pole near them. Both end up being presented in front of Mithun Chakraborty, the most feared don of Mumbai and elder brother of Asin.

Mithun wants to marry off his sister, Asin, but she knows that looking at her brother’s background, only another goon will marry her and keeps foiling her brother’s attempts to find a match for her. In fact, she already has a beau who is serving time in jail. Reshammiya’s family business comes to the fore and he along with Mishra accepts the challenge to find a match for Asin despite a threat from Mithun that if they fail the consequences would be dire. But Reshammiya needs to prove himself to his family and he also has in mind just the person who can rein in wild Asin. That is Akshay Kumar, whom Reshammiya has seen in action on an earlier occasion.

Reshammiya plays the matchmaker with the mantra borrowed from his father that like a pinch of salt in dough for chapattis, a little lie is okay in their business of matchmaking. He convinces Mithun to pose as a police officer since, to his knowledge Akshay’s family is full of policemen.

As both the families come together, the fun continues till Akshay discovers that Asin has a boyfriend, the jailbird, Rahul Singh who does something foolish every time he is released and is soon picked up again. In this event, there is not much scope for romance between Akshay and Asin except for some songs in dream sequences.

Khiladi 786 counts mainly on comedy and action. While for comedy the film has a screen full of characters, the onus of providing thrill rests mainly on Akshay’s shoulders. The film has funny sequences with dialogues to match. The songs are a plus point for the film with ‘Saari saari raat…’ being melodious, the others, ‘Balma…’ and ‘Hookah bar…’ being racy.

Akshay is in his element in action scenes and deadpan in comic scenes. Mithun Chakraborty, seasoned artiste that he is, convincingly carries out a don caricature. Asin as an aggressive shrew is good. Reshammiya shows a marked improvement in his acting. The villain, Rahul Singh, is not a perfect choice to match Akshya’s image and character. The supporting star cast of Raj Babbar, Mukesh Rishi, Manoj Joshi, Sanjay Mishra, Rajesh Khattar, Johny Lever, Bharti Singh and Mushtaq Khan is adequate.

Khiladi 786 opened well but the collections have varied through its first day. However, being fairly enjoyable fare, it should make up over the weekend.
