Special Ops 2 turns spy games into cyber lessons for a nation on edge

MUMBAI: When Special Ops 2.0 stormed onto JioHotstar, it wasn’t just another slick return for Kay Kay Menon’s unflappable Himmat Singh. This season traded bullets for breaches, exposing the murky world of cyber warfare, where the enemies aren’t men in balaclavas but faceless hackers armed with AI and a knack for digital deceit.

Leaning hard into real-world relevance, the campaign flipped a spy thriller into a wake-up call. Through partnerships with WhatsApp, Truecaller, and Paytm, Himmat himself schooled India on phishing scams, deepfakes, and UPI fraud. From a staged “leaked” document that redirected users to a PSA video to hyper-local AI-generated trailers calling out neighbourhoods by name, Special Ops 2.0 made cyber-threats impossible to ignore, reaching over 10 million users and sparking 22.4 million social interactions.

More than a campaign, it became a movement. Himmat’s rallying cry—“Yeh Himmat Ka Kaam Hai”—triggered a wave of user-generated content, racking up 3 million views and 13,000 organic posts. Fiction bled into fact, and India found itself bingeing not just on espionage, but on digital literacy.

In a world of data leaks and deepfakes, Special Ops 2.0 didn’t just entertain. It armed a nation, one click at a time.

  • Cyber threats loom in Special Ops 2 trailer

Cyber threats loom in Special Ops 2 trailer

MUMBAI: JioHotstar has plugged in with the trailer for Special Ops Season 2, signalling the electrifying return of Kay Kay Menon as the redoubtable R&AW officer Himmat Singh. This time, the stakes are not just high, they’re sky-high, as the series pivots to a perilous cyber front.

Created and directed by Neeraj Pandey, who also serves as a writer for the series, alongside Deepak Kingrani and Benazir Ali Fida, the show’s cinematography was handled by Sudheer Palsane, Arvind Singh, and Praveen Kathikuloth.

Under the keen eye of director Shivam Nair, the new season plunges audiences into a volatile geopolitical skirmish. Wars, it seems, are no longer confined to muddy battlegrounds but are now waged in the digital ether, with the enemy lurking in plain sight. Himmat and his crack squad face a silent, insidious war – one of coordinated cyber breaches that threaten to dismantle national stability without a whisper of warning or a single visible scar. It’s a battle for the very soul of the nation, folks.

A sterling ensemble cast, including Prakash Raj, Vinay Pathak, Karan Tacker, Saiyami Kher, Muzammil Ibrahim, Gautami Kapoor, Parmeet Sethi, and Kali Prasad Mukherjee, lend their considerable talents, adding layers of intensity to this high-octane narrative.

The Grand Hyatt Mumbai played host to the grand unveiling, where the full cast mingled with the press. JioStar CMO & head-SVOD Sushant Sreeram, offered a fascinating insight into the streaming giant’s greenlighting philosophy. Addressing the perennial question of audience attachment to characters, Mr Sreeram mused that on-screen personas transcend mere viewing figures, becoming integral to a process. He elaborated, rather pointedly, that audiences seek inspiration, hope, or solace in these journeys, finding reflections of ‘either what we are or what we want to be.’

While JioHotstar boasts a ‘repertoire’ of ‘best characters’, their true vibrancy, he noted, stems from the collective genius of ‘writing it, to directing it, to the people who actually portray the characters,’ not forgetting the ‘fantastic teams at JioStar’ who bring them to the screen. In essence, he argued, these on-screen figures are but echoes of ‘our close relationships’, promising both familiarity and ‘surprise and, you know, delight’ this season.

JioHotstar, not one to miss a beat, shared the trailer on Instagram with a pithy caption: “This time, everyone is a Target! Cyber-Terrorism vs. Himmat Singh and his squad. #HotstarSpecials #SpecialOps2, streaming from July 11, only on #JioHotstar”.

With a fresh antagonist in Tahir Raj Bhasin, and a global scale matched by razor-sharp performances, Special Ops Season 2 is set for a thrilling 11 July drop. Brace yourselves, because this time, the battlefield is everywhere!

Intricately woven into the storyline, his portrayal required me to draw on a blend of experiences and characters I’ve embodied over the years, as well as mentally and physically prepare for the grueling stunts and amped-up action scenes, making it one of my most challenging performances yet. And I am deeply grateful to Prime Video, Raj & DK, and AGBO for the opportunity to bring Bunny to life,” said Varun Dhawan.

Samantha said, “The opportunity to be part of an action-packed entertainer with a gripping storyline, rich character depth, and intense hand-to-hand combats and stunts that rival international standards, along with the prospect to play an integral role in this collection of connected spy stories, is what drew me to this project. The challenges and efforts required to bring Honey to life have left a profound impact on me, both professionally and personally, making it one of the most significant roles of my career. I’m confident that the audience will thoroughly enjoy this series, not just in India but across the many countries and territories where it will stream on Prime Video.”

JioCinema Premium’s Shekhar Home to premiere on 14 August

Mumbai:  JioCinema Premium is all set to launch the detective drama series, Shekhar Home, on 14 August, starring Kay Kay Menon in the lead. The recently launched trailer gives a riveting glimpse into the world of Shekhar, who unravels the web of crime and mystery with his unmatched detective brilliance. Also featuring a talented ensemble cast of Ranvir Shorey, Rasika Dugal and Kirti Kulhari in key roles, Shekhar Home is an original work of fiction, inspired by literary works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle which are in public domain. The 6-episode series is produced by BBC Studios Productions India and directed by Rohan Sippy and Srijit Mukherjee.

Set in the early 1990s in the tranquil town of Lonpur, Bengal, the show is an ode to times when technology was unheard of, and human intelligence was the only thing one could rely on. Kay Kay Menon essays the titular role of Shekhar Home, who is both eccentric and brilliant. Fate makes him cross paths with Jayvrat Sahni, a middle-aged bachelor, played by Ranvir Shorey, who goes on to become an unexpected ally, and together, they embark on a journey of solving mysteries across East India. The duo delves into cases that range from blackmail and murder to supernatural occurrences. Shekhar’s sharp intellect becomes his greatest tool as he navigates a world where criminals lurk in unexpected places, ensuring each revelation is both surprising and thrilling. The series perfectly blends the intensity of suspense drama with a hint of humour, promising a compelling story of friendship, love, betrayal, crime, conspiracy, and exhilarating escapades.

Talking about his role, Kay Kay Menon said, “Shekhar’s character took me back to the good old days. I re-lived the memories of the time when social media was not even a thing. After reading the script and analysing this role, I was drawn to the complexity of unravelling mysteries. The series isn’t just about solving crimes—it’s also about exploring human nature in all its aspects- from love and loyalty to betrayal and deceit. Playing Shekhar was a pure delight. I’m excited to bring Shekhar to all of you.”

Rasika Dugal commented, “Working on ‘Shekhar Home’ has been a fun journey. It was a delight to collaborate with talented actors like Kay Kay Menon and Ranvir Shorey. And to be directed by Rohan Sippy. My character, Iraboty, is a force to reckon with—a strong, determined woman driven by the quest for justice. She has a compelling journey and the dynamic between Shekhar and Iraboty adds a layer of intrigue. Their bond, evolving through shared challenges and discoveries, gives a glimpse of a partnership that goes beyond solving the case.”

Kirti Kulhari said, “Shekhar Home is one of those rare scripts that grab hold of you from the very first read—you instantly know you must be a part of it. It seamlessly blends mystery with humour, creating a narrative that resonates across a wide spectrum of audiences. From the moment I stepped onto the set, I knew this was going to be a special journey, and my character is an interesting one. The series is a testament to the brilliant writing and the seamless direction that allowed us to create a series that is as entertaining as it is thought-provoking.”

  • Intriguing social drama ‘Gulaal’ premieres today

MUMBAI: Bollywood has seen a plethora of films based on state politics, but there has never been a narrative as startling as ‘Gulaal’. Boasting of superlative performances, this film directed by Anurag Kashyap cuts through the layers of grass-root politics situated in the regions from Rajasthan to Bihar. Zee Classic with its brand promise of Woh Zamana Kare Deewana, will premiere ‘Gulaal’ in India’s Finest Films on Friday, 3 March, at 10pm.

‘Gulaal’ revolves around a central god-like leader, illegitimate methods of conducting politics, folk songs heartily sung by Rekha Bharadwaj and strong noteworthy performances by Kay Kay Menon, Mahie Gill, Raj Singh Chaudhary, Jesse Randhawa, Piyush Mishra and a climax that is sure to give goosebumps! The film took seven long years of wait and relentless struggle by Anurag Kashyap to make it happen. It is highly credited for its compelling storytelling and dark themed narrative.

Dilip Singh (Raj Singh Chaudhary), a soft-spoken man comes to Rajasthan to study law. Due to the lack of hostel occupancy, he is forced to stay with an unstable man Rananjay Singh (Abhimanyu Singh). During his constant attempts to relocate, Dilip encounters a room-full of men who torture and abuse him. He is then locked up in a room with a lady (Jesse Randhawa). Dilip partners with Rananjay and Dukey Bana (Kay Kay Menon) to plan to take revenge on the people who humiliated him. Dukey Bana is a local uncrowned monarch who was contesting for the forthcoming university elections. Murders, bloodshed and conniving tactics to get to the top is what forms the rest of the film.

  • The Attack On Ghazi…..Worth watching but….

MUMBAI: A lot of things seem to be going right for India and its people in various fields and, suddenly, people have learnt to take pride in achievements of her people in sports, space science, IT, coupled with a newly acquired sense of patriotism over past couple of years. This has been making many filmmakers cater to this new fervour with different genre films.

For instance, films on sports or the biographical films on sportspersons, which never worked earlier, have found favour with the audience to varying degrees, including one, Dangal, even proving to be a blockbuster. That is because these films are based on success stories. As for patriotism, few attempted them but the ones following the 1965, 1971 wars and one after the Kargil did work. The problem with this theme is that the spirit of patriotism is usually comes in phase.

The “Attack On Ghazi” is a film about the single submarine that the Pakistan Navy boasted of during the 1965 and 1971 wars India fought with that country. The submarine, Ghazi, acquired by the Pakistan Navy from the US in 1963, was destroyed during the India-Pakistan war of 1971, following which East Pakistan seceded from Pakistan to become Bangladesh. There is more than one version as to how this super powerful sub sank.

As the Indian Navy claimed it destroyed the sub, the counter version from Pakistan claims it was a case of accident and self-destruction.

The film, The Attack On Ghazi, takes the angle that the sub was destroyed by the Indian Navy.

Ghazi was sent to fight the East Pakistan insurgency, as Pakistan described it then, to enable other ships to carry on with the supply of essentials to the Pakistan army in the East. The only way to deliver these supplies was through sea route around India and Sri Lanka. However, the only impediment for Ghazi was INS Vikrant, India’s multipurpose giant of an aircraft carrier ship, which was blocking the sea route to East Pakistan. Ghazi was meant to destroy Vikrant. However, before it could come anywhere near Vikrant, Ghazi was destroyed.

Kay Kay Menon plays the role of an assertive commander of an Indian Navy submarine which has been ordered to recce the eastern coast of India during the 1971 war. It was not supposed to attack if an enemy ship was sited, just report to the Navy HQ. Menon does not like the idea. His second-in-command is Atul Kulkarni’s character, is in awe of his commander. Also on a special assignment on this sub is Rana Daggubati, who believes in going by the book and never crossing the line of command. Since Menon is a defiant officer, Daggubati is on the job to keep a check on him.

As Menon is the protagonist and Daggubati the antagonist, the early bit of this first ever Indian Navy war drama is about cold war and conflict of ideas between these two. Menon wants to torpedo the first enemy ship he spots because he has seen many jawans, including his young army man son, die because of the politicians’ apathy and indifference. Daggubati wants to wait for orders.

That is when the crew spots the mighty sub, Ghazi. Menon wants to torpedo it immediately while Daggubati is against the idea pending orders from high command. Their torpedo operates on two keys, one each with Menon and Daggubati.

The second half is all about maneuvers between Ghazi and the INS sub outsmarting and out-guessing each other’s positions as torpedo after torpedo is fired. The Ghazi, after all, is supposed to have their best commander in charge, and should not be easy to overcome. The Indian sub has fallen victim to the Ghazi-laid mines, yet the war between the two continues.

The Attack On Ghazi is noble effort to arouse the patriotism. What is wrong is that it attempts all that with a garbled screenplay; while this stuff may not have been seen on an Indian screen, there are quite a few films made in Hollywood about a ship in dire straits.

Since the Indian audience is unfamiliar with the real warfare, let alone underwater submarine duals, some distractions would have helped but there are none: the whole film is about two enemy ship commanders trying to outwit each other. Things get repetitive in the second half.
The underwater filming is not easy, and most of this film is set below the waves but the cinematography is praiseworthy. The direction, though imaginative, falls prey to the elongated script. In the name of music, the film has two mandatory patriotic numbers in the national anthem and Saarejahan se achha….

The performances are sincere and convincing from all concerned. Shining through the lot are Kay Kay Menon, Rana Duggubati, Atul Kulkarni and Rahul Singh. Nassar and Om Puri have brief roles.

Tapsi Pannu has been brought in to the cast for some glam but has really nothing to do; she does not even merit an introduction or a background story.

The Attack On Ghazi is an interesting film worth a look but such films need some encouragement in the form of reasonable admission rates. Otherwise, tough to attract audience as is the case so far with this film which has had poor opening.

    Producers: Matinee Entertainment, PVP Cinema.

    Director: Sankalp Reddy.

Cast: Kay Kay Menon, Rana Daggubati, Atul Kulkarni, Om Puri, Milind Gunaji, Tapsi Pannu, Nassar, Rahul Singh.

  • ‘Singh Is Bliing’… while the weekend lasts

‘Singh Is Bliing’… while the weekend lasts

Every hero and his shadow seem to be doing action. Sadly, action sequences have become so similar that no matter who the hero is, they all look mechanical. Akshay Kumar was an action hero, who did some romance and later took to comedy. Not known for histrionics, his fortunes have always depended on the writer and director.

Not counting just on one genre, his latest flick Singh Is Bliing combines action and comedy, to the extent of placing romance at third position on its priority list.

While Akshay is generally clumsy and ends up making blunders on a regular basis, he excels in all demonstrations of physical prowess. That, of course, has not prepared him to fight the goons who don’t go by the rule. As such, he gets bashed up most of the time and that adds to the comic quotient of the film. More so because the girl he is supposed to protect, Amy Jackson, excels in martial combat often saving Akshay from the goons rather than the other way round.

Akshay is a good for nothing Sikh lad living in a joint family in a small town in Punjab headed by his father, Yograj Singh (ex-cricketer, father of cricketer Yuvraj Singh and later actor in Punjabi films). Fed up of Akshay’s waywardness, Yograj gives him two options: either to marry his friend’s fat daughter or to shift to Goa and work with his friend, Pradeep Rawat. Akshay opts for the latter.

Meanwhile, Amy Jackson is in Romania. Her father, Kunal Kapoor, is some sort of international don who distributes sections of the world to various others so that they don’t fight for or trespass onto others’ territory. One of his subordinates is the father of Kay Kay Menon, a lunatic criminal, who wants Amy at any cost. He even kills his father so that he inherits his position. Menon’s first encounter with Amy is humiliating as, when he tries to get fresh with her, she thrashes him and pins him down to ground. Now, he wants her more than ever before.

Kunal asks Amy to leave and stay somewhere where Menon can’t find her. Amy chooses Goa. She has an agenda; she wants to trace her mother who left her and Kunal when the latter took to illegal businesses. Kunal asks his friend, Rawat, to tend to his daughter who, in turn, deputes Akshay to do the needful. Akshay and Amy have a major communication gap since she knows only English while Akshay can communicate only in Punjabi or Hindi, a fact that Akshay has hidden from Rawat.

In comes Lara Dutta. She is the translator who knows both, Hindi as well as English. Lara soon realizes that she is caught between an uncouth Akshay and a headstrong Amy. Her survival trick is to manipulate the translation as Akshay and Amy converse so that neither of the two is offended. This adds to the fun.

Like a typical gangster film, this one too has layers of villains, one bigger than the other. When Akshay is rendered unconscious by a bunch of goons, Amy eliminates a layer or two for which Akshay gets the credit from Rawat, who himself is a gangster in Goa.

Meanwhile, of course, love has happened. Akshay has fallen for Amy out of a lot of miscommunication thinking that she is enamoured by him. Amy, too, has eventually fallen in love with Akshay for his simplicity and because he always stands by her to protect her – so what if eventually she ended up protecting him on a few occasions!

The film is fun so far but then comes the summing up and the need to give the hero, Akshay, his moments of glory. So, Amy’s mother has to be reunited with her, Menon’s demand to marry Amy is to be dealt with and, finally, love has to triumph.

The climax is with Menon and his European goons who attack Akshay in a horde over a narrow bridge. This is that moment of sunshine reserved for Akshay. Akshay is felled. But, he chants a quote by the 10th Guru of Sikhism, Guru Gobind Singh, and is rejuvenated to fight the villains till end. This once, Amy does not resort to her martial abilities for she is now in love, turned into coy woman; her man, Akshay, can handle it for her sake!

Singh Is Bliing is a mid-level action comedy that entertains for most of its length. The film has some funny moments and some hilarious ones as well as some forced gags. The direction is fair. So is the photography. The songs have a heavy Punjabi flavour. The editor could have snipped another eight to 10 minutes. Locations are pleasant to the eyes. Action scenes, especially of Amy, are very well executed and deserve credit.

The film’s scoring point is its casting. Besides Akshay, it has avoided using the stereotypical. Casting of Kunal as Amy’s father, Rawat is Akshay’s boss, Yograj, Lara and Menon are a work well. While, in totality, Lara emerges the best of the main players. Amy is good despite limited dialogue. Akshay sticks to playing what he played in his earlier films. Menon, Rawat, Yograj, Rati Agnihotri and Kunal Kapoor are good in support.

Singh Is Bliing is a fair entertainer, which has managed an excellent opening thanks to a national holiday (Gandhi Jayanti), which combined with the weekend collections should help the film to a great extent.

Producers: Akshay Kumar, Ashvini Yardi, Jayantilal Gada

    Director: Prabhudeva

Cast: Akshay Kumar, Amy Jackson, Lara Dutta, Kay Kay Menon, Rati Agnihotri, Pradeep Rawat, Murli Sharma, Kunal Kapoor, Yograj Singh

    ‘Talvar:’ Merits a watch

Based on the Arushi Talwar murder case of 2008, which happened in the Delhi NCR area, Talvar is a fictional account of the case where, in real life, Arushi’s parents were held guilty of killing their daughter. A film has been made on this case earlier while even some TV crime-oriented shows have dealt with the subject, not to forget the hours and hours of TV news footage that the case got.

The film looks at the case from three angles. The first one being that of the local police’s casual approach, which jumped to conclusions on hearsay and called it an open and shut case without even bothering to collect appropriate proof or calling the forensic experts to the crime scene.

The second stage is when the ministry wants to be very certain about this case since parents are involved and orders a CDI probe (read CBI). Irrfan Khan is in charge of the case though he does not consider such murder cases up to his class.

Irrfan follows the case meticulously going back into details and trying to recreate the crime scene. He has an able assistant in Sohum Shah, who usually starts the questioning and slapping of a suspect before Irrfan takes over; till then Irrfan loves to play games on his cell phone!

Besides recreating the scene of crime and talking to all concerned, Irrfan even opts for the lie detector tests of the servants as well as the parents of the girl murdered, Neeraj Kabi and Konkona Sen Sharma. While a servant owns up to the crime, the parents come out clean even in the narco-analysis that follow.

Irrfan reaches a conclusion that the parents did not commit the crime but the servants did when an attempt to rape the girl backfired. But the day his investigation is completed and handed over to his boss, Prakash Balwadi, is also the last day of his boss in the office. His send-off party is the celebration of the conclusion of this case.

However, the next boss to come in is not convinced. He has his own theory. He sidelines Irrfan and appoints a new investigator who will deliver to his wishes. This is supposed to indicate that the case detection was manipulated and the authorities were hell bent on zeroing in on the murdered girl’s parents.

Irrfan, who lives a troubled married life, goes back to his wife Tabu; she is his only solace.

The case reports finally go to the ministry where both Irrfan’s and the new chief’s conclusions are debated. The conclusion is that the case should be closed since there is nothing except circumstantial evidence against the parents. The court, however, refuses to accept the closure report and rules that the case be carried on!

The film starts on a dull note. It picks up momentum only once Irrfan enters the scene actively to handle the case. The confrontation between the two sides of the investigation agency is interesting. Actually, this could have been a 100 minute film, very crisp. But, then, the director is trying to tackle three versions of the same case.

Meghna Gulzar has matured as a director in this, her third attempt. Glitches are few. Scripting is good, especially the idea of the three versions. The music has mainly on-screen utility. The saviour of the film is the casting of Irrfan without whom it would have been lifeless.

Talvar has a one watch appeal for elite multiplex cinegoers. Its commercial prospects are fair.
