9 baj gaye kya? – ICICI Bank gets Big B to endorse it all through the hour-long KBC

Big ideas seen on television in the recent and not so recent past have been the positioning of ICICI Bank in Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC).

There were cheques to be signed by one bank or the other and ICICI, perhaps, found the right opportunity at the right time. End result: you have a never before one of its kind leverage that draws the maximum attention subtly without being in your face. That’s a big idea and as bright as it gets.

The bank enjoyed a never before leverage every time Bachchan fished out a cheque to sign it and then hand it over to the eager KBC participant. Your brand name and logo on clear display all through while you get none other than Amitabh Bachchan to put his graphologically perfect signature in the viewers’ full and unhindered view!

Perhaps, Bachchan signing the same cheque in a regular TVC would not have carried the same subconscious effect that it did in KBC.

  • Amitabh Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar to team up again

Amitabh Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar to team up again

MUMBAI: After Lakshya, Amitabh Bachchan is yet again ready to team up with Farhan Akhtar but this time, unlike their previous venture, Farhan will be seen sharing screen space with the star.

Titled Do, the movie will be produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and directed by Bejoy Nambiar. The film will also have Aditi Rao Hydari playing the female lead.

Do is said to be an intense emotional drama which has Amitabh Bachchan playing the role of an ailing bed ridden chess master and is slated to go on floor on 29 September.

Excited about his new project, the legendary star posted on his blog, “Our work on the next film with Vidhu Vinod Chopra, has begun with class like readings and discussions, on table. It is a wonderful exercise to be able to go through an entire script with the entire cast.”

“Yet have some reserve stored up for the final moment when we shall all be facing the camera, instead of a written and bound script, with that ominous looking producer Vinod, looking down upon us with fierce and hard workman like expressions,” he added.

Bachchan has earlier worked with Chopra in 2007 film Eklavya: The Royal Guard but this is the first collaboration between the actor and Nambiar, best known for helming Shaitan.

After Amitabh Bachchan’s Yudh came to an end recently, the superstar is busy hosting the popular quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati and also preparing for Shoojit Sircar’s Piku starring Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan. On the other hand, Farhan Akhtar is wrapping up his sister Zoya Akhtar’s film Dil Dhadakne Do. The actor is also producing films like Bangistan, Raees and the upcoming film on time travelling starring Sidharth Malhotra under his banner Excel Entertainment.

  • KBC 8: Stays true to its message, wins hearts at Surat

KBC 8: Stays true to its message, wins hearts at Surat

MUMBAI: It was a night to remember for people in Surat who were entertained by none other than Amitabh Bachchan and Kapil Sharma.

Sony Entertainment Television took its property, ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’, out of its sets for the first time and created magic at the Surat Stadium for the 7000 plus audience. The live event held on 2 August saw Big B open the season in his inimitable style along with a bevy of dancers with whom he grooved to songs sung especially by him for KBC.

The event was hosted by Kapil Sharma, who left the audience in splits with his impeccable comic timing. He also experienced the tension contestants go through as he sat on the hot seat for the first time. Sharma expressed his happiness of working with Sony again and sharing the KBC stage with Bachchan. “It is always a pleasure to work with him,” he said.

SET senior EVP and business head Nachiket Pantvaidya added that getting Sharma on-board was a good move, considering his popularity among the masses. “He has added a lot of value to the show. Plus, he has worked with Bachchan before so there is a certain chemistry between the two which was an advantage for us,” he informed.

Adding to the excitement were the iconic cops, Dayanand Shetty and Abhijeet from Sony’s popular crime show, ‘CID’, who interacted with the audience.

If that wasn’t enough to leave the audience spellbound, then the valiant warrior and Rajput hero, Faisal Khan from ‘Maharana Pratap’ surely did that with his stellar dance performance. The trio of Neeti Mohan, Meiyang Chang and Anirudh Dave also added to the entertainment quotient of the evening keeping the audience engaged in a musical banter. The charming Shillong Choir gave a heart- warming performance.

This year, the channel wanted to target the cities which usually are ignored. Pantvaidya believes that it is either the state capitals or the metros that get their share of entertainment. “Thus, there was a need to target the smaller cities which are otherwise ignored and not paid much attention to,” he said.

“If we connect across these smaller cities, we will be able to fulfill all those aspirations and we did that with Surat,” added Pantvaidya.

According to SET SVP head marketing Gaurav Seth, it is also a good way to test how both, the brand and the channel, is doing in these cities.

The channel is quite happy to take the show outside the sets for the first time. “I am quite happy that everything went as per plan,” opined Seth.

So what is new this season? Though the prize amount remains the same, Rs 7 crore, to make the show more interesting, two additional features have been added.

The expert advice lifeline has been converted into a panel of three wise men who will sit amongst the audience called ‘Triguni’. Upon being called, these three wise men will give the correct answer along with interesting trivia around the question.

Another interesting lifeline called ‘Code Red’ will let the family of the participants tell them to quit, if needed, by pressing a buzzer placed in front of them. According to Pantvaidya, “This will also increase the number of factors in the game theory. This is not just a knowledge game but it is also about uncertainty in people’s mind.”

At the marketing front, the channel is leaving no stone unturned to create the buzz.

After Surat, it will be travelling to three other cities which have not yet been finalised. However, the aim is to keep the buzz alive at the same scale.

Seth believes that this season’s core message ‘Yahan Sirf Paise Nahi, Dil Bhi Jeete Jaate Hain’ will be the constant catchphrase for the show.

“Keeping in with the promise of our brand, we are happy that we are able to integrate our thought into the content,” added Pantvaidya.

To increase the level of engagement with the consumers, the channel has created a KBC app. For the first time, this year, wherein people sitting at homes can experience in real time and play by answering questions and win prizes.

Apart from this, social media is going to play a major role to drive the point. The channel has rolled on a 100 ground events, where people will share their experience of sitting on the hot seat on Facebook.

Though both the officials refused to disclose any financial details, sources from the industry estimate that around 30 per cent of the entire budget is being spent on marketing.

Four episodes have already been canned and are at the edit phase right now.

Though the channel is betting big and spending loads and loads of cash, media planners believe that like last year, this season will also not add value to the ratings and give the channel those numbers as expected.

Produced by Big Synergy, it will hit the television screens from 17 August, five days a week at 8.30 pm.

  • KBC 8: A journey from individual to collective growth

KBC 8: A journey from individual to collective growth

In a world where everyone is busy achieving their personal goals, we as individuals have stopped thinking about the nation as a whole.

A flip through news channels and newspaper pages presents the stark reality of our society today. While we spend hours and hours talking about the ills plaguing Indian society, how many of us actually take a step further and act against them?

Multi Screen Media’s Sony Entertainment Television (SET) along with its creative agency Leo Burnett have through the two promos of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC)’s eight season.

The first film titled Kohima makes one shameful about the fact that even though we all know aboutthe  north east being a part of India, the denizens of that region are often derided and ridiculed and called names, and even treated as outsiders when they travel to other parts of the country.  The promo has already been talked about in an earlier article on indiantelevision.com.

The second KBC8 TVC gives a different perspective on the Hindu-Muslim divide. The commercial is set in a tiny neighbourhood (chawl in India) in which a Hindu and Muslim family are neighbours.  Ankit, a boy from the Hindu family is chosen to participate in KBC. His family is hugging him and wishing him good luck as he is about to depart to take part in the game show. The members of the Muslim family are watching the scene from  the balcony of their home above and sniggering; and one of them even sneezes out  aloud deliberately –  which is considered a bad omen by some Hindus. The young folks from the Hindu family want  to confront the Muslim youngsters but are stopped by their father. Cut to the set of KBC and Amitabh Bachchan has asked a question which has stumped Ankit. He chooses to use the phone a friend helpline. And the friend he chooses to call – is the Muslim household as he has been asked the meaning of As salamu alaykum.  The elder of the Muslim family – who are also watching the episode in which Ankit is participating – picks up the call and gives him the correct answer – “Khuda Tumhe Salamat Rakhe” (God keep you safe). Both the Hindu and Muslim families then celebrate Ankit’s win  by hugging each other.

The two promos show how KBC has evolved through its various messages over the years. From ‘Koi Bhi Sawaal Chhota Nahi Hota’ to ‘Seekhna Band…Toh Jeetna Band,’ the channel has come up with innovative messaging almost every year.

However, what differentiates this message from the previous ones is the fact that from just focusing on an individual the focus has shifted to the society as a whole. Amitabh Bachchan in his baritone voice has alway exhorted viewers  to acknowledge the power of self and grow it through the power of knowledge. Now, the show promises to touch people’s hearts with the stories of community bonding.

The message of KBC season 8’s campaign ‘Yahan Sirf Paisa Nahi, Dil Bhi Jeete Jate Hain’ (We don’t win only money, we win hearts too), has beautifully integrated social messages within the script making one sit-up and take notice.

It is not the first time that a general entertainment channel (GEC) has touched upon social issues and tried to invoke the right and the wrong within people. But what separates these promos from the rest is the fact that they are hard hitting and talk directly to people. They are a mirror reflecting our society in simple yet assertive manner.

The yet-to-be released TVC talks about how KBC and Amitabh Bachchan has crept into our nation’s collective consciousness and involves entire communities, if one of their members is selected to participate in the game show.  The film opens in a small village where people are busy stringing up loudspeakers across its streets.  A man beaming with happiness is shown keeping a phone next to a microphone. The telephone rings shrilly and the voice of Big B reverberates through the whole village and the villagers leap up in deliight.  The TVC then cuts back to the KBC set where the surprised AB asks the contestant ‘tumne toh family ko phone kiya tha?’ to which he replies, ‘They are all my family.’

The person on the phone then asks Mr Bachchan to recite one of his favourite dialogues to which he says, “aaj khush to bahut hoge tum.”

Will the promos on which the agency worked for almost two months help change society is not sure, but what’s certain is that they will make one look inside, especially when the incidents happening around make us hang our heads in shame.

  • ‘KBC 8’ to roll out in August

‘KBC 8’ to roll out in August

MUMBAI: One of Sony Entertainment’s biggest property, knowledge-based show, Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) is back and hopefully with a spike in viewership this time! In season eight of the game show, Cadbury continues to be the title sponsor and is powered by Idea.

KBC, the Indian adaptation of the original format, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, catapulted Star Plus’s popularity and boosted Sony’s viewership once upon a time. In season seven, it completely surprised viewers with a new avatar in terms of format, level of audience engagement, prize money and so on, but did not go well as expected in terms of ratings.

In order to gain more attraction this time, the channel has started to create buzz well in advance. Big Synergy director Anita Kaul Basu revealed that the show will go on-floors in July and on-air sometime in August. She further revealed that there will be a few changes in the format as well but that is all on ideation stage currently. “It is too early to talk on this. We have a lot of ideas as to how to go about it, but we haven’t given a nod to any,” said Basu.

Basu who has given a new dimension to Indian television by producing KBC believes one needs to keep re-inventing to bring in the fresh perspective. Whether it is in terms of format or creative, with every season it has enthralled the audiences with its content.

Hosted by inimitable host, Amitabh Bachchan, this season has kicked off with the line – “Iss manch se koi bhi khali haath nahi jaata”. Registrations for the same have already started from 5 May where questions are asked regularly on Sony at 9pm every night.

Potential participants have to answer these correctly in order to have a chance to be on the hot seat. This season, aspiring contestants have access to two new platforms to reach the hot seat: They can download the KBC official app and register by sharing the correct answer, their age and gender.  Also registration is possible via sending an SMS to 5252525 with the correct answer along with necessary details.

Idea users can register themselves simply by sending an SMS from their Idea mobile. Additionally, viewers can also opt for registration through BSNL landline phones or via Idea IVRS code. Alternatively, viewers can log on to kbcsony.com to register for their shot at the ‘Hot Seat’.

In an earlier interaction, MSM CEO NP Singh had agreed to the fact that KBC needed some innovation with every season. “We have to continue to innovate and so we have brought several innovations in KBC. Though it was well received in the beginning, eventually it settled down at a lower number. But that doesn’t mean there is fatigue with the format of the show. We will do something more when we bring KBC the next time.”

Sony SVP head- marketing Gaurav Seth believes that the show is a reflection of the hopes and aspirations of millions of people who are looking at transforming their lives. He said, “This year we are attempting to bring the show closer to our viewers by engaging various mediums through which they can enhance their chance to be on the much coveted hot seat. We are confident that once the season gets underway, it will strike a deep emotional chord with the entire country, like never before.”
