Mumbai: Gowardhan Ghee from the house of Parag Milk Foods has collaborated with Sony Entertainment Television’s show Kaun Banega Crorepati Season 14 to launch its new communication initiative, #GARVSEGOWARDHAN.

The campaign kicks off across multiple consumer touch-points, such as television, out-of-home, digital, and experiential activations. It is an attempt to convey the mutual feeling of pride felt by millions of customers, farmers, and the Parag Milk family.

Following this partnership, whenever a contestant on the hot seat reaches the second “Padaav” of the game, i.e., wins a minimum of Rs 3.20 lakh, they will also attain the prize of yearly supplies of Gowardhan Ghee.

Host Amitabh Bachchan will mention “Gauravshali Uphar,” which adds to the contestants’ achievements. This association is a step towards celebrating the brand’s purity while embracing its glorious years in the market.

Commenting on the collaboration, Parag Milk Foods senior vice president strategy, sales, and marketing Akshali Shah said, “Associating with Kaun Banega Crorepati is a logical extension of our brand and product category Gowardhan ghee, as traditionally ghee has been considered a brain tonic for memory enhancement. It is said to promote all three aspects of mental functioning-learning, memory, and recall—which are essential to performing well on the hot seat. We are also very thrilled with this association as the legendary Amitabh Bachchanji serves as the host. His charming personality and humility bring an unwavering fanfare to this game show. It has a successful track record of reaching a captive audience, delivering stupendous results, and garnering favourable reviews across India. The mention of “aapko milta hai Gowardhan Ghee ki taraf se Gauravshali uphar” by Amitabh Bachchan ji has enormous appeal and would aid in extending our pride in #GARVSEGOWARDHAN to the next level.”

Sony Entertainment Television hikes KBC 14 ad rates by 15-20 per cent; witnesses return of marquee brands

Mumbai: The longest-running knowledge-based game show Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) is returning to TV screens on 7 August for its fourteenth season. Throughout many seasons, KBC has emerged as the ‘go-to’ property for advertisers when it comes to maximizing brand presence & customer engagement.

“The property is known for its undisputed honesty and credibility aids in achieving the desired objective for an advertiser through the customized solutions we create by understanding their needs,” Sony Pictures Networks India ad sales – network channels Sandeep Mehrotra told Indiantelevision.com. “This benefit certainly attracts clients who keep coming back with every season of KBC.”

    Channel to increase ad rates

Mehrotra reveals that the Sony Entertainment Television channel is planning to increase the ad rates on the show by 15-20 per cent for the new season. It sees the return of marquee brands including Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Asian Paints, UltraTech Cement, Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) and Hyundai. Reputed brands like Asian Paints, UltraTech Cement and Hyundai have been associated with KBC for the past five, four and two years, respectively.

The reason brands associate with KBC year after year is because of the show’s legacy and credibility which has helped it build a strong foundation and deliver value when it comes to brand solutions. Throughout the years, clients have seen its business objectives find the right brand solutions through KBC beyond just free commercial time (FCT).

KBC is a much more digitally integrated show as compared to when it first started. The audience can engage with the game show on their smartphones via the Sonyliv app. The ‘KBC Play Along’ feature that combines the right mix of technology and gamification has added a personal engagement factor for the audience, getting them more involved in the game.

“We are looking at creating value propositions for brands who are motivated to expand their reach on both linear and digital mediums, as it would benefit them in achieving their desired business objectives that have been set out,” said Mehrotra.

He further said, “The show enjoys diverse participation from brand partners, season after season. KBC continues to attract positive responses from not only existing sponsors but new ones as well. Owing to the value proposition the show offers, the visibility adds weight to the sponsoring business.”

    Focusing on innovation and creativity

This year’s season of KBC has innovated on two fronts, its marketing and programming. It is running a TV campaign that captures the transition of society from an information-scarce environment to an information overload which has created a need for a filter on solicited and unsolicited information that can translate to relevant knowledge.

This messaging has been captured by the dialogue ‘Gyaan jahaan se bhi mile bator lijiye, lekin pehele zara tatol lijiye’ spoken by the show’s host Amitabh Bachchan in their commercials running on TV. The campaign cashes in on the show’s credibility and strengthens KBCs positioning as the leading game show on TV.

The 14th season of KBC also coincides with India’s 75th year of independence and the channel has introduced a special episode that will air on 7 August at 9:00 p.m with special guests to bring alive the theme of India’s independence. Promos of the show aired on TV indicate that Padma Bhushan recipient actor Aamir Khan, Padma Bhushan boxing champion Mary Kom and Padma Shri Sunil Chhetri will be guests on the show. Kargil war veteran major DP Singh and Sena medal gallantry recipient Mitali Madhumita will appear as special guests.

In terms of format changes, this year KBC contestants will win a prize pool of Rs 75 lakh or higher, which is expected to go up to Rs 7.5 crore. Additionally, after the success of the children’s special in the previous season, the current season will witness little geniuses taking the hot seat once again.

“KBC 14 will be an integration of everything that has worked towards KBC’s success in the past and current innovations to the reality game-show format,” concluded Mehrotra.

  • Sony TV ropes in 12 sponsors for KBC 13

Sony TV ropes in 12 sponsors for KBC 13

Mumbai: Sony Pictures Networks India has announced the 13th season of “Kaun Banega Crorepati” (KBC), starting 23 August. Produced by StudioNEXT and hosted by Amitabh Bachchan, the show will air on Sony Entertainment Television, every weekday at 9 p.m.

The show has roped in BYJU’s and Cadbury Dairy Milk as ‘co-presenting’ sponsor, Hyundai Motor India, Asian Paints Royale Glitz, Ultratech Cement, and Zydus Wellness (Complan) as ‘co-powered by’ sponsor and CERA, Pharmeasy, IDFC First Bank, LIC of India, Bharat Matrimony as associate sponsors. The Reserve Bank of India has come on board as a ‘special’ partner.

“For a show like KBC that has followed a certain creative pattern, it was time for us to break the mold and approach it differently. While digital auditions replaced the regular audition process, it didn’t deter the volume of entries. In fact, the ease of digital audition encouraged a lot more aspirants, based in the remotest areas possible to participate. We are happy with the spiritedness of each contestant, and we are hopeful that they fulfil their KBC journey,” said Sony Entertainment Television, head of content and digital business, Ashish Golwalkar. “While we did introduce AR (Augmented Reality) in the previous seasons, this year, the use of AR is far more superior and immersive. From refurbishing the entire set with the play of lights to the graphical elements and LED panels, India is the only country to host the format with the inclusion of such refined technological detailing. With distinct modifications to the game this season, we look forward to rewarding gameplay and promise an enhanced viewing experience to the audience.”

“It’s the 21st year of my association with Kaun Banega Crorepati and I can never get enough of this show,” said Amitabh Bachchan. “It was probably for the first time, last season, that the studio audience wasn’t a part of the show and we saw a major change in the lifelines as well. I, for one, truly missed them and their energy… it’s infectious! I am happy that the studio audience is back this season with a newfound vigour and so is the lifeline – Audience Poll. It’s an enriching experience for me, each year, to be surrounded by contestants from all walks of life and I look forward to engaging and fulfilling gameplay. These contestants inspire me in every way,” Bachchan said.

“It’s the 21st year of India’s longest-running show, and it’s heartening to know that KBC remains such a strong family favourite, that it still resonates with viewers across the social spectrum, and from all age groups,” said Siddhartha Basu, consultant for KBC season 13. “Each season, we’ve seen participants coming on to the hot seat from across the country, with varied levels of education and occupations, each with a distinct dream and story. Among a host of reasons that drive them, a key one is the search for ‘sammaan’ or respect. And they win that respect along with what can be life-changing amounts of winnings through a knowledge game. Gyan or knowledge is what provides a level playing field in our society, and viewers can now look forward to an exciting and entertaining new season of the show with a signature offering of gyan, dhan, and sammaan.”

Fans of KBC may also log on to SonyLIV to participate in the gameshow via KBC Play Along, starting from 23 August, said the channel.

  • How television can increase time spent viewing with interactivity

MUMBAI: With streaming video services like Netflix, Amazon, Disney+Hotstar, and Zee5 grabbing a majority of the headlines, and becoming the flavor of the moment, many believe that linear television in India is losing its moxie. Yes, broadcasting companies are indeed responding aggressively to Netflix and Amazon’s invasions into what was once solely their territory by acquiring, merging, and launching their own OTT platforms. Not just in the US, but almost every nation, including India.

Yes, it’s true that India alone has around 70-80 streaming platforms – if you include those with dubious titillating content, and which are available on the google play store. Yes, it’s true that almost every trade and business publication has raised the alarm that streaming video platforms are going to steal viewers and pull the rug from under television’s feet.

But the fact is that the reality is as far from this fear-mongering, as is mount Everest from Mumbai. Television is only on the rise in India. That is quite evident from the television data the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) reported recently. The number of Indian television households grew to 210 million by the end of 2020. Some 13 million homes were added to the TV universe since the last BARC study in 2018; of this rural India accounted for nine million. TV viewership also rose to 892 million individuals from 836 million. Add to that the fact that more than 90 million households have yet to own a TV set.

Now if you compare those figures with the OTT universe: the biggest OTT platforms in India – Disney+Hotstar and Zee5 – have monthly active users which are around one-third of TV’s viewing population and other streamers have significantly lower numbers. Subscribers to the premium OTT services are also only in the single and double-digit million range. Revenues too are not comparable; the free ad-supported television streaming platforms are dwarfed by the ad revenues that Indian television –both pay and free to air channels are mopping up.

Clearly, broadcast television has long legs and will continue to stride ahead of streaming services. What can help it proliferate even more is if interactivity can be built into it; with viewers being able to interact with it live from their homes. Just like it is possible with the streaming video which is delivered over internet protocol or the internet as is the case with OTT platforms. Sports fans have been fascinated by what has been playing out on their mobile phones wherein they can make comments while watching the IPL action on their smartphones on Disney+ Hotstar. They can engage with the video on their phones. Fans have also been quite taken up with being involved in Kaun Banega Crorepati with the play-along option available on their smartphones. That has probably added to SonyLiv’s stickiness.

But today technology is available which can bring similar – if not better – interactivity to television too. One of the best products available today is MegaphoneTV which allows viewers to interact with their programmes from the comforts of their sofas in their homes. It enables them to take part in opinion polls, trivia, social interaction, quizzes, express their fan love, expound their views on what’s going with the storylines and characters of their favourite TV shows – and their responses and names are transmitted to hundreds of millions of viewers all over India simultaneously immediately with a lag of fewer than 200 milliseconds. All they need is a smartphone. Megaphone TV allows TV to transform itself from being a dead one-way device to one with which viewers can correspond, that too without any latency.

More than 160 channels globally are using Megaphone TV – from US broadcasters ABC, CBS, NBC, Bravo TV, CNN, Sky TV in the UK, and RTL in Germany. And they have benefited immensely from this tool with response rates and engagement with TV viewers going up exponentially.

Channels- both entertainment and news – globally have used MegaphoneTV to build loyalty by giving out rewards to loyal participants of the interactivity, thus increasing stickiness and spiking time spent viewing by TV viewers.

New York-based Megaphone TV founder & CEO Dan Albritton points out that integrating the tool with the channel’s backend is extremely simple, adding that all that is needed are internet connectivity, two computers – one in the playout hub of the broadcaster, and one in the hands of a junior programming executive wherever he is located. He explains: “Being a white-label service, it takes on the channel’s packaging, branding, and look with no indication of Megaphone branding anywhere. The interactivity questions, polls, and quizzes can be entered to appear on-air on a TV channel on the fly by the junior executive after strategizing with the programming team. “

Brands can be roped in by the channels ad sales team to sponsor the interactivity. And TV commercials by brands can also be created which encourage viewer responses live, thus in the process helping build sales funnels and consumer data, to which the broadcaster’s data teams and marketers have free access. “The American TV industry has recognized the value we are offering through Megaphone TV. We have won an Emmy Award for it, and have been nominated twice for some of the interactivity around other TV programmes,” says Albritton.

In India, TV channel executives are just about getting exposed to Megaphone TV, he points out.

“Two channels have been licensed to use this engagement driving tool. They will be coming out with their offerings soon. Some leading media agencies have seen it in action too, and are excited about the possibilities Megaphone TV offers,” he says. “I can visualize a time in the not too distant future when Megaphone TV will become ubiquitous in the very exciting Indian television ecosystem.”

  • Behind the scenes, on the Kaun Banega Crorepati 12 sets

Behind the scenes, on the Kaun Banega Crorepati 12 sets

MUMBAI: The Covid2019 pandemic has disrupted projects and thrown well-crafted schedules out the window. But the team of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) is ready to bounce back with the same enthusiasm and with double the precautions in place.

In adherence to strict social distancing norms, its sets have undergone a complete overhaul. While the core of the programme remains the same, the latest edition comes with a few modificationsin keeping with the times.

One such change is that for the first time in 20 years, KBC will not host in-studio audiences as per government-mandated safety guidelines and protocols in response to Covid2019. The in-studio audience played a huge role as a lifeline – the audience poll helped contestants on the hotseat advance in the game. To replace this lifeline, video-a-friend has been introduced.

KBC showrunner and creative producer Sujata Sanghamitra said: “The country is looking at each other through screens now; hence this new lifeline. The other three lifelines– 50:50, ask the expert and flip the question – will remain.”

According to Sanghmitra, the makers had to rework several rules and figure out logistics to ensure that social distancing is maintained.

“The number of fastest finger first contestants competing for the hot seat has been reduced from the usual ten to eight. The designs of the hot seat and the contestants’ chair have also changed, there's more of a gap now,” she elaborated.

Soon after recovering from Covid2019 and the mandatory rest period thereafter, actor and host Amitabh Bachchan made himself available for shoots in August. One of the main highlights of KBC has been the camaraderie between Bachchan and the participants. They normally engage in banter, and sometimes contestants ask the legendary actor for a hug or an autograph. Instead of his signature warm handshake to welcome contenders, Bachchan will this year greet them with an ‘elbow bump’.

    Going digital

One of the first steps towards putting the show on the floors was to make its selection process completely digital. Everything from registration, examination to the final interview and general knowledge test was done online.

As for the video clips giving an insight into the lives of the participants, they were shot by the participants themselves, with help from KBC’s reality team. The team remotely coordinated with the contestants to shoot the back stories.

    Social distancing on the set

In a video, Sony Pictures Networks India (SPN) KBC’s technical director Arun Sheshkumar said that in order to meet social distancing norms, the show has cut down its key crew of 300 to 175.

“Since the audience is not part of the process, the entire backend team, which is there for the audience, has been put on stand-by,” Sheskumar explained. With the crew members’ health and safety in mind, glass partitions have been set up to separate them, he added.

Now, the KBC set in Film City also has a bigger control room with a glass wall in between. Usually chaotic and packed with crew moving in and out, it will now have strict restrictions. The cafeteria too has a glass partition on every table and the team makes sure not to crowd any place at any given time.

Prior to the pandemic, the set usually had two entry-exit points. These have now been increased to multiple entrances and exits.

KBC is one marquee show for Sony, audiences, and the industry which everyone looks forward to each year. The entire unit hopes it will be an exemplary one and will set the standard for how productions can be successfully and safely done.

(KBC12 started airing from 28 September. It is one of the first reality shows to return to the small screen amidst Covid2019.)

Produced by StudioNEXT, and hosted by the superstar, Amitabh Bachchan, the game show will premiere on 28 September and will air every Monday to Friday at 9:00 pm only on Sony Entertainment Television.

While the core of the show remains the same, KBC season 12 comes with a few changes relevant to the current times. For starters, for the very first time in 20 years, KBC will not host in-studio audience keeping in line with the government-mandated safety guidelines and protocols in response to Covid2019. The in-studio audience played a huge role as a lifeline – audience poll in helping the contestants on the hotseat move ahead in the game. This year, the audience poll will be replaced by the lifeline video-a-Friend. The other three lifelines remain the same – 50:50, ask the expert, and flip the question. The number of fastest finger first contestants who will compete to be on the hot seat per week has been reduced from the usual ten to eight.

With KBC Play Along on Sony LIV, viewers can enjoy the thrill of the gameshow by participating and matching their power of knowledge with the contestants on the hot seat simultaneously, starting 28 September.

Sony Entertainment Television and digital business content head Ashish Golwalkar said, "Reinvention, they say, is the key to success. And thus, we began the preparation of the season 12 of Kaun Banega Crorepati, a show that has been nurtured as a brand over its 20-year history in India. Considering the current times, the interest in participation through digital registrations has been very encouraging this year. And the numbers showcase that people are readily embracing the 'new normal' brought on by the pandemic. This year's theme, 'Jo Bhi Ho Setback Ka Jawab Comeback Se Do', reflects in the real-life stories and experiences that contestants will be seen sharing on the show, thereby serving as inspiring examples for the millions of viewers."

StudioNEXT head Indranil Chakraborty said, "For season 12 of KBC we have consciously looked at re-engineering the set so that the distancing norms are met while the impact of this property is retained. Due to no studio audience, we have changed the lifeline audience poll to a video-a-friend. Having said that, we are certain that Amitabh Bachchan's charisma and the interesting on-screen and off-screen journeys of contestants, will keep the audiences engrossed. The show continues to be iconic in many ways and is sure to raise the bar this season as well."

While adapting to the realities of today, the show still packs a punch, reaching out to both the mind and the heart, touching lives in a very real way.  Viewers can also look forward to playing along with the contestants, as they watch, with richer pickings than ever before."
