ErosNow gets into a mess with provocative social media posts

MUMBAI: These are sensitive times. Brands and influencers have to tread carefully, almost as if they are walking on egg shells. Streaming service Eros Now learnt it the hard way over the past couple of days.

Ever since the start of Navratri 2020, Eros Now – which is part of Eros STX –  has been posting short videos and digital stills from movies produced by Eros International. Some of these  featured Deepika Padukone from 2015's Bajirao Mastani. Kareena Kapoor Khan in her Chhammak Chhallo avatar from the 2011 film Ra.One on Twitter. These were accompanied by provocative – and what could be called raunchy messaging, obviously to evoke a grin from the young who flock to dandiya and garba gatherings. The person behind the push is a young social media executive.

"Be naughty, sweet toh mithai bhi hai," read a tweet shared alongside one of the Navratri posters.

Another poster featured a picture of actor Katrina Kaif along with the caption "Do you want to put the ratri in my Navratri?"

All hell broke loose as a section of  the Twitterati found the language offensive and vulgar and derogatory of Hindu icons and festivals. And the trolls got to work with a vengeance: starting a hashtag boycott ErosNow which soon became a chorus – so much so that it trended worldwide.

Some even alluded that Ali Hussein the head honcho of ErosNow is a Muslim, which is why the streamer was insensitive to Hindu sentiments. We, at indiantelevision.com, know that a religious slur was not the intent, the idea was to connect with the youth in a manner they talk and joke amongst themselves.

But the trolls had a field day.

"Dear Eros Now, Why have you posted these double-meaning vulgar banners for the auspicious festive season?" asked one Twitter user.
Others called for strict action to be taken against the company.

Nevertheless, following the uproar ErosNow decided to pull down the so-called offensive tweets and images.

And it shared in a tweet where it explained itself: “We at Eros love and respect our cultures equally. It is not, and it has never been our intention to hurt anyone’s emotions. We have deleted the concerned posts and apologise for having offended anybody’s sentiments.”

At the time of writing, the anti-ErosNow campaign was losing steam, even though a bunch were still posting their annoyance on Twitter.

&pictures to premiere ‘Zero’ on Nov 23

MUMBAI: ‘Sapne Size Dekh Kar Nahi Aate’, this dialogue from the superhit movie – ‘Zero’, beautifully highlights that one doesn’t need to set their dreams basis their background or appearance. Even with perfectly imperfect situations, one can rise above and beyond in terms of achieving their

Carrying his confidence in every centimetre he embarks on a journey of finding fame and love. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif in the lead, along with Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Tigmanshu Dhulia and Sheeba Chadha essaying pivotal roles, Zero is all set to take you on a hilarious yet emotional roller coaster ride. dreamt of. I consider this film close to me as it talks about the passion that everyone should have in their life.”

Anushka Sharma said, “Aafia’s character is independent and highly accomplished. She has achieved multiple accolades on the professional front, despite dealing with an ailment which would have been tougher, probably impossible if not for the wheelchair aid. While Bauaa and Aafia’s characters have challenges, but they also have their dreams and desires that pushes them to go that extra mile.”

Set against the backdrop of Meerut, the story revolves around Bauua Singh (Shah Rukh Khan), a short stature man who never falls short of confidence. His childlike innocence and his best friend Guddu Singh (Mohammad Zeeshan Ayub) come to his rescue every time he gets himself in a difficult situation. After having difficulty in finding a marriage partner, he comes across Aafia Yusufzai (Anushka Sharma), an accomplished scientist with Cerebral Palsy. To woo her, Bauua uses all the tricks in the book which makes her fall in love with him. However, their love story faces a twist with the entry of superstar Babita (Katrina Kaif) due to which he is put to test with his first relationship. This love triangle takes them to far off cities and thrusts Bauua into an adventure to find what his heart truly desires while he paves his way from Meerut to Mars.

Katrina Kaif launches kay beauty in partnership with Nykaa

MUMBAI: Bollywood actor Katrina Kaif launched her beauty brand Kay Beauty, in partnership with India’s largest beauty retailer, Nykaa, in an unprecedented pan-India launch across 50 Nykaa stores and on the Nykaa website and app. Kay Beauty is created by Katrina with a vision to deliver high-performance, long-lasting, ultra-glam makeup products that also care for the skin. The launch collection will feature lip, eye and brow products to create 3 beauty trends – Perfecting The 3D Lip, The Art of Sultry Eyes, and Natural Ombré Brows

As an actor, having experienced long hours of shooting, with constant touching-up of makeup, Katrina wondered if she could create a makeup product that was long-lasting, looked ultra-glam but at the same time cared for her skin. Thus was born the idea of #MakeupThatKares, a makeup collection where each product has specific ‘care’ ingredients to nourish the skin, while at the same time delivering a longwear, high performance finish. This led her on a journey to discover ingredients that could be fused with makeup to repair and enrich the skin. After months of testing and refining every aspect of every product, from ease of application to colour payoff, texture and shade range, Katrina felt that this collection was a part of her and extended her name to it, calling it ‘Kay’.

Katrina Kaif says, “As a person, I’m very demanding of myself, always pushing for more. Kay Beauty has been created with this same rigour, asking a very demanding question – how can we get more out of makeup? The answer that the collection offers is a unique formula of makeup products that are long-lasting and ultra-glam, and that cares for your skin. Each product is  infused with ‘kare’ ingredients so that you can indulge in makeup without any guilt. It was also very important for me that the collection was versatile enough to cater to different skin tones, ages and emotions. With the range of shades and buildable formulas every woman can find their look, whether it’s quick glam or ultra-luxe. I’ve taken all the knowledge I’ve gained in my career and put it into these products. I hope that they give you the tools to explore your creativity and celebrate your own unique idea of beauty.”

Falguni Nayar, founder & CEO, Nykaa, "The launch of Kay Beauty is a proud moment for Nykaa as India’s first celebrity beauty brand. I have always been an admirer of Katrina’s independent spirit and was inspired by her vision to create this unique collection. Over the past two years, Katrina and the team have worked with relentless passion and dedication to bring this vision to life. We are constantly looking at innovative beauty solutions to offer our customers and Kay Beauty will add a new facet to the Nykaa conversation."

Reena Chhabra, CEO, Nykaa Brands, "Bringing Kay Beauty to life has been an amazing journey to witness Katrina’s passion, care and commitment to each product. These unique formulas meet her exacting demands for products that are high performing, professional and ultra-glamorous, all while caring for the skin. The beauty trends she identified can easily be decoded with these easy-to-use, buildable formulations. Her heart and soul is in every product and we look forward to growing the collection with her to a full-fledged luxury beauty brand for the Indian audience.”

Kay Beauty features Kolor, Kover and Kare ranges, where Kolor represents the colour cosmetics with eyes, lips & nails, Kover will include high performance face products and Kare encompassing the nourishing ingredients. The collection launches with a 48-piece collection of versatile eye and lip products from the Kolor category. The minimalist outer packaging etched in a delicate K monogram represents a white canvas suggesting that beauty is what each woman wants it to be.

  • Jagga Jasoos – a disappointment both as a musical and as a comedy

Describing a film as a musical is a misnomer as the genre does not exist and in any case music as we knew it has virtually ceased to exist Hindi films which have lyrics that pass off as songs.

Jagga Jasoos takes inspiration from various sources like the popular comic series, The Adventures Of Tin Tin, Hollywood musicals of the sixties and some from India. It has described as a musical, adventure, romantic, comedy.

Ranbir stutters in his speech. His father, Saswata Chetterjee suggests that if he converses in verse he will not stutter. That is what makes it an excuse of a musical as he rhymes all his dialogue. Adventures are aplenty but lack impact as they happen suddenly and are forced most of the time. As for comedy and romance, they are missing.

Ranbiir Kapoor is a school student staying in a hostel (time he grows up to more mature roles if he wants his films to work) who plays jasoos (detective) on the side. His comic books are popular and a journalist, Katrina Kaif, reads them out to a bunch of children regularly. This is perhaps the longest introduction of a hero in any film!

The film starts with the much publicised Purulia arms drop incident. Saswata, who was a sole witness to the dumpingt vanishes soon after. Getting down to tracking him, Jagga Jasoos is roped in as a result of Katrina having narrated two of his adventures to children. In one of the stories Katrina who has gone to follow the story of the arms drop, gets involved with Ranbir who is after the arms smugglers.

This takes the film to half time in the film when Ranbir decides to trace his father. He asks Katrina to join him. In the process, they land up in Africa and realize that though the main arms dealer is some two headed man who owns a Russian circus, some of the Indian officials are also involved, including Saurabh Shukla, a government investigator.

Shukla thinks Saswata has been killed by his men but oddly enough, is told by Ranbir that his father is very much alive and is somewhere in Africa! Why should he do that when he knows Shukla is not worthy of trust? So Ranbir along with Katrina are searching for his father while Shukla is out to eliminate them.

The usual chase follows as Ranbir and Katrina find ways to escape like in a train, a car, a scooter or even an airplane conveniently placed for them whenever they need them.

The film clearly has a very loose script and hinges between being a children’s film and a serious subject of arms smuggling. The director has no grip on the proceedings and there are many glitches. With just Ranbir and Katrina with a couple of unknown faces to Hindi screen, it becomes a drag and the length of 142 minute duration adds to the woes! The film being dubbed as a musical fails as only the already popular number Galti se mistake…passes muster. Cinematography is good. The climax has been rushed.

As for performances, Ranbir Kapoor shows no improvement, and Katrina seems to be losing her charm. Saurabh Shukla does well as usual. Saswata Chetterjee does very well.

Jagga Jasoos has taken almost three years in the making but comes up with a totally disappointing result.

Producers: Siddharth Roy Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor, Anurag Basu.
    Director: Anurag Basu.
Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Saurabh Shukla, Saswata Chatterjee.
