Lionsgate launches ‘insurgent’ virtual reality experience with Samsung

MUMBAI: Lionsgate and Samsung Electronics America, Inc have teamed up to create the exclusive virtual reality (VR) experience – “Insurgent – Shatter Reality.”

The four-minute visual work of art is a fully-immersive, 360-degree narrative experience set in the world of the upcoming feature film The Divergent Series: Insurgent and features stars from the film including Kate Winslet, Miles Teller and Mekhi Phifer.

Beginning 27 February, fans can experience the VR content for themselves exclusively through Samsung Gear VR powered by the Galaxy Note 4 as “Insurgent – Shatter Reality” goes on tour in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Austin and San Francisco prior to going live across all platforms and app stores.

The experience will also be available exclusively on Samsung’s Milk VR service from 1 March. Fans outside the tour markets will have an opportunity to view the experience on Samsung Gear VR over the weekend of 7-8 March at select Best Buy stores across the US.

“Virtual reality elevates the world of Divergent to a whole new level by creating a uniquely exciting and immersive experience for our fans. The ‘Insurgent – Shatter Reality’ experience reflects our commitment to partner with leading technology companies like Samsung to remain at the cutting edge of VR and other innovations that expand the worlds of our franchises and extend our storytelling in exciting new directions,” said Lionsgate chief marketing officer Tim Palen.

“As we push new boundaries in the world of technology and virtual reality, we are excited to continue our relationship with Lionsgate and bring Divergent fans a one-of-a-kind experience through Gear VR and Milk VR. This partnership will bring fans closer than ever to the action in this blockbuster series,” added Samsung Electronics America vice president and general manager – Immersive Products & Virtual Reality Nick DiCarlo.

By putting on the Gear VR headset, consumers are immersed in the role of “Divergent” members of society who have been captured by Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet) and her Erudite faction and are subjected to a series of mental “simulations” in order to determine the full extent of their divergence. As the VR technology simulates Jeanine and her faction cohorts testing them with experimental serums, they experience two distinct, intensely gripping and realistic fearscapes, transporting them from the frightening heights of a crumbling Chicago skyscraper to the intimidating challenge of a massive, fast-approaching locomotive.

Created by virtual reality innovators Kite & Lightning with assistance from the film’s VFX team, the experience was built using stereoscopic 4K video of the actors, with effects and environment built in Unreal Engine 4 and then rendered into an immersive 3D/360-degree experience. It was scored by The Divergent Series: Insurgent composer Joe Trapanese.

The Divergent Series: Insurgent, the second installment of the Divergent franchise, will be released in theaters worldwide on 20 March. The first Divergent film grossed nearly $300 million at the global box office, and the Divergent trilogy has sold more than 30 million books around the world.

MUMBAI: Here’s the review of the sixth book in the 10-part series that features books being adapted into Hollywood movies in 2014.

    ‘Divergent’ by Veronica Roth

What makes you different also makes you dangerous!

The future belongs to those who know where they belong. What if you don’t belong? What do you do when you don’t belong? What do they do when they know you don’t belong?

That is the life of Beatrice “Tris” Prior, who discovers that she is “divergent” – that she does not fit into any one “faction”. She soon uncovers a sinister plot brewing in her seemingly perfect society.

In a futuristic dystopian post-apocalyptic Chicago, people are divided into five distinct factions based on their personalities – Candor are the honest, Abnegation are the selfless, Dauntless are the brave, while Amity are the peaceful, and Erudite are the intelligent. When Tris discovers a conspiracy to destroy the Divergents, she must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it’s too late.

Divergent has been extremely well received. It won Favourite Book of 2011 in the Goodreads Choice Awards 2011. The book currently stands at 4.37/5 of 590,875 ratings. Common Sense Media, a not for profit organization working towards improving lives, commented on Veronica Roth’s book by saying that it had deep messages about identity and controlling societies and that the plot was unstoppable and remarkably original. The book also won the Sakura Medal Contest.

The rights to the live-action, motion picture adaptation was bought by Summit Entertainment, an American film studio behind teenage blockbusters like The Twilight Saga and Step Up Revolution. The film directed by Neil Burger (Limitless) boasts an interesting cast led by Golden Globe Award nominee Shailene Woodley (The Descendents, The Fault in Our Stars) as the Divergent Tris, along with Theo James (Downton Abbey, Golden Boy) as Four, Maggie Q (Nikita) as Tori with Tony Goldwyn (Scandal) and Ashley Judd (Missing) as Andrew and Natalie Prior, Tris’ parents and Kate Winslet (Titanic, The Reader) as Jeannie Matthews, the film’s lead antagonist.

  • A Palme d’or for the Cinéfondation!

A Palme d’or for the Cinéfondation!

Jane Campion is to head up the Cinéfondation and Short Film Jury of the 66th Festival de Cannes, a position held previously held by Jean-Pierre Dardenne, Michel Gondry, Hou Hsiao Hsien, Martin Scorsese and John Boorman.

Originally from New Zealand, Jane Campion has attracted critical acclaim since the very beginning of her film career: in 1986 she won short film Palme d’or for Peel and garnered interest from critics all over the world for Sweetie, the first feature she presented in competition at the Festival de Cannes. After An Angel at my Table, she returned to Cannes with The Piano, which won the Palme d’or in ’93, as well as the best actress award for Holly Hunter.

Her work, which is dominated by the presence of fascinating women in search of their identity, comes in a variety of styles, from Holy Smoke (Kate Winslet) and Portrait of a Lady (Nicole Kidman) to In the Cut (Meg Ryan). Her latest film, Bright Star, was a fictional biography of the poet Keats and his muse, and was presented in competition at Cannes in 2009.

Gilles Jacob, president of the Festival de Cannes and the Cinéfondation, declared: “Jane is a child of Cannes. I know this as it was I who selected her first three short films for the Festival, because I liked her style and consistency. Naively perverse young girls, teens closed in around their solitude, and women mulling over desires and regrets: Jane’s is a passionate universe that she firmly holds in check as she draws these intricate group portraits. I am delighted that the love story between Lady Jane and the Festival continues today as she takes on the role of president.”

The Cinéfondation and Short Film jury is comprised of five eminent figures from the worlds of film and literature and they choose their three prize winners from among the Cinéfondation’s selection of film school entrants. The jury also chooses the winner of the short film Palme d’or, which is presented during the closing ceremony of the Festival, on Sunday May 26th 2013.
