Release date of Aamir Khan’s Talaash postponed

MUMBAI: In view of Aamir Khan’s pre-occupation with his television show Satyamev Jayate, producers Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar and Khan himself have decided to postpone the release of their film Talaash: The Answer Lies Within directed by Reema Katgi.

The film, which was to be released on 1 June, will not be pushed back to 30 November.

Confirming this, Sidhwani said,”Since Talaash is the actor‘s next big release after 3 Idiots, we mutually decided to push the release of the film forward. Besides, Aamir will now get sufficient time to promote the film.”

Talaash: The Answer Lies Within is Excel Entertainment’s psychological thriller that also features Rani Mukherjee and Kareena Kapoor in pivotal roles.

Though the shooting of the film is complete and the post-production would conclude much before the due date, the producers took the decision to give Khan time to promote the film.

Khan is hosting and producing Satyamev Jayate that brings real life stories on the small screen for Star Plus.

  • Inspired yet insipid

    Inspired yet insipid

MUMBAI: A coming of age film again; Imran Khan is 25 year old and Kareena Kapoor ready to enter her 27th. They say the generation today is fast and matures before teens, Imran, though in mid 20s (in the film) and a veteran of over half a dozen films, is still coming of age. Well, if he is taking his time coming of age, it is fine but an Indian film where the female actor is mature and smarter than the male actor and in full control is a rather dicey theme to attempt; what is more, the hero stays a loser till the very end! Whatever happened to happy endings?

Producer: Hiroo Yash Johar, KaranJohar, Ronnie Screwvala.
Director: Imran Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Boman Irani, Ratna Pathak Shah.

Imran Khan has been sacked from his job by his architecture firm in the US and the sacking happens to coincide with the two day visit of his parents, Boman Irani and Ratna Pathak, from India. The only son of rich parents, Imran Khan has been brought up with their idea of discipline from brushing teeth thrice a day to which colour tie to wear. He can‘t wear socks and underwear unless pressed And one thought film heroes were supposed to be idols! Imran Khan‘s first thought always is what will his parents say/think? and he decides not to tell them about losing his job. Boman Irani plays the kind of father who was never happy with his son winning a silver medal but unhappy about losing out on gold one.

Single, suppressed and jobless, Imran Khan bumps into Kareena Kapoor at a utility store who on her part has just been ditched by her boyfriend she keeps referring to as Sam. Kareena Kapoor is everything that Imran Khan is not; extrovert, fun loving and full of stories about her past affairs. It is Christmas eve and Kareena Kapoor invites Imran Khan to celebrate the evening with her at a shady bar; not quite the hero‘s class but that is what an always tight on money Kareena is used to. A simple beer drinking evening turns into tequila guzzling session, one thing leads to another and both end up in an instant marriage chapel only to come out married to each other. (If it sounds familiar the basic theme is from the 2008 Hollywood film, What Happens In Vegas). The realisation strikes the morning after and both decide to annul the marriage.

However, the circumstances lead Kareena Kapoor to take shelter in Imran Khan‘s pad before she makes a trip to India in a few days. Fondness grows and she convinces Imran also to join her on her trip and yes, he can live at her house and his parents need not know. So what if Mumbai is so huge and crowded, Imran Khan can‘t hide from his parents as he is spotted crossing a road by his mother and it is time to change tracks as over a dinner Imran Khan opens up before his parents and guests breaking the shackles over his life. The story moves back to its original track, Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor; the former has by now fallen head over heels for Kareena who does not share his feelings and is content telling him about her various past encounters! Her feelings for Imran Khan are purely platonic and that is how it remains as the film ends. The hero remains an eternal loser!

This is a thin and routine storyline with mostly two characters, not equally talented, to carry it through. The funny moments and gags are few and far in between which makes the going very slow, dull at most times. Direction is routine. Musically, only the title song stands out. Dialogues are good at places, but not enough to make it a laugh riot.

Performance-wise, Imran Khan has few expressions to offer coming out bland most of the time. Kareena Kapoor gives one of her better performances and does her part convincingly. Boman Irani and Ratna Pathak Shah are good.

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is an insipid watch with poor prospects at the box office.

UTV set to release Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu on 10 Feb

MUMBAI: UTV Motion Pictures and Dharma Productions are all set to release their joint venture movie, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, on 10 February.

The film, starring Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor, is a light hearted, tragicomedy about a guy in his mid twenties, going through a breakdown in his personal as well as work life.

Normally, stars promote their films in as many locations as possible before release, but Imran Khan is doing it with a twist. He has decided to bring along all his fans with him through the power of video and YouTube.

The leading man will travel to Dubai, New York and the UK as well as 5 to 6 Indian cities after which he will document his journey and upload it on UTV’s and Dharma Productions‘ YouTube accounts to give his fans back home a taste of what it means to live life as a high-profile jet-setting Bollywood star.

Agent Vinod to release on 23 March

MUMBAI: Illuminati Films’ upcoming film Agent Vinod will finally release on 23 March.

The film that was to originally release on 9 December was earlier deferred to 17 February.

As the title denotes, the film is said to be a detective thriller with lots of action and sans usual humdrum; it takes on after a popular old movie with the same name.

Agent Vinod is an action thriller that has producer Saif Ali Khan playing a slick, stylish and daredevil secret agent.

It is being widely speculated that the release date has been postponed to avoid a clash with Kareena Kapoor‘s Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu that is releasing on 10 February.

Directed by Sriram Raghavan, the film has been in the making for several years.

  • UTV’s Heroine goes on floors

    UTV’s Heroine goes on floors

MUMBAI: The shooting of UTV Motion Pictures‘ Madhur Bhandarkar directed Kareena Kapoor-starrer Heroine got underway over the weekend.

Heroine is an insider‘s account of a heroine on top of the movie business today. The film will have Kapoor essaying the character of a superstar in B-town and her journey.

Expressing his happiness on the launch of the shoot, UTV Motion Pictures CEO Siddharth Roy Kapur said, “Heroine is one of the most anticipated movies of 2012 and for all of us associated with it. That means that a lot of hard work over the next few months to meet the massive audience expectations. With an excellent script, a talented director at the top of his game and a superb cast and crew, we‘re confident we‘ll be up to the challenge!”

It may be noted that UTV and Bhandarkar are associating again after their film Fashion swept the box office and major film awards winning National Awards and Filmfares for its lead actresses Priyanka Chopra and Kangna Ranaut.

The project also marks 10 years of Bhandarkar‘s critical and commercial success in which he made cult films and entertainers like Chandni Bar, Satta, Page 3, Corporate, Fashion and Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji.

Bhandarkar said, “I‘m delighted that I‘m making Heroine with UTV. We had a great experience of working together during Fashion and we are taking this beautiful relationship forward. Heroine is a dream project for me about an industry in which I have lived my dreams and it will be my biggest film to date.”

It may be noted that Arjun Rampal has been paired in the role of a superstar opposite Kareena while Randeep Hooda and Shahana Goswami play supporting roles.

  • Ra.One lacks in the script department

Ra.One lacks in the script department

MUMBAI: When you have done just about everything and still find yourself at a stage where you want one box office blockbuster to retain the top spot, you want to do something different. So here we have Ra.One, which is purported to serve that purpose.

    Producer: Gauri Khan.
    Director: Anubhav Sinha.
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Master Armaan Verma, Arjun Rampal, Shahana Goswami, Tom
Wu, Dalip Tahil, Satish Shah, Suresh Menon.

TheThe intentions are noble enough. It is the execution and the content which don’t comply! A few reels into the film and you wonder “where is this all leading?”

We have had a few films about super human – Mr X, Mr India, Krrish– but Ra.One is about bringing a videogame superhero to life.

Shah Rukh Khan is a computer geek. He and his team are asked to develop a blockbuster video game since the company’s last one flopped badly. If he fails, the office will be converted into a restaurant and Khan and his team will be waiting on the guests; so much for being wizards of the virtual world.

Shah Rukh plays a docile, meek man whose cute and almost-whiz kid son, Armaan, does not think much of his father, while his wife, Kareena Kapoor, just loves him for what he is.

The thinking is that to be a computer nerd one has to be a South Indian, so that is what Shah Rukh is cast as while Kareena is supposed to be a Punjabi, for whatever reason.

The son thinks super heroes are not cool anymore and wants the super villain to be more powerful. With this idea, Shah Rukh begins work on his next video game where the villain is all powerful. This is Ra.One, ArjunRampal, in his final avatar (there being many since he can morph in to anyone’s identity). The hero is a good-hearted G.One, who stands a 0.01 per cent chance of survival against the villain. It is here that the film begins to sag.

The process of developing the video game and computer lab gizmos make for tedious watching and accounts for almost the entire first half. When the programme is eventually ready and being launched in a grand ceremony, things start going haywire elsewhere as Armaan tries his hand at the game in the lab. He is forced to leave it halfway, which drives Ra.One mad and he decides to emerge out of the virtual world into the real world to destroy Lucifer, Armaan’s video game ID.

The villain is out on the loose and kills Shah Rukh Khan, who designed him. The mother-son duo go on the run with Ra.One chasing them, first on the trot and later on the bike. One wonders why a villain who can almost fly, leap miles or materialise anywhere out of thin air needs to chase them like a normal human being. But then, this helps provide some thrill, destroying a few cars in the name of entertainment. Meanwhile, Armaan has also managed to bring out G.One to life in the shape and size of Shah Rukh Khan, a protector for the pair. In the end, as it should be, even with 0.01 per cent odds, good wins against the evil. It is a shame that you are too mentally fatigued to understand the intricacies of how and why.

Ra.One is a technical and special-effects treat if you care for that sort of thing as entertainment. But the fact that it is carried a bit too far is a deterrent. Also, in the absence of decent contribution from the script department, this technical triumph eventually comes to nothing. Dialogue is routine and funnier lines are mostly of the below-the-belt variety. Musically, while, Chhammak Chhalo… has been much hyped, the pick of the lot is Dildaara dildaara. Action is well choreographed but gets repetitive after a point, thereby losing its novelty. Direction is average with many scenes stretched beyond utility point.

As for performances, Shah Rukh does what he has been doing all along. He is cute and playful when in normal role but when he enacts the video game character, the ghost of My Name Is Khan seems to possess him and he acts as if he is affected by Aspergers syndrome again. Kareena Kapoor is good. Master Armaan steals the show. Rest have limited scope.

On the whole, Ra.One opened to below expectations response due to wrong release day (Diwali). Having picked up handsomely on second day, it started its slide on third day. The appreciation being poor, the film’s box office potential stand hugely challenged.

Tell Me O Khuda is a good idea treated in an old- fashioned way

Tell Me O Khuda is meant to be a re-launch vehicle for the almost forgotten Esha Deol. Mother Hema Malini is the one to do the needful. In what seems like a wise move, the story chosen needs three veteran actors, all stars to reckon with in their own heydays, in Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna and Rishi Kapoor.

    Producer: Hema Malini.
    Director: Mayur Puri.
Cast: Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna, Rishi Kapoor, Hema Malini, Esha Deol, Arjan Bajwa, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Farooq Sheikh, Deepti Naval, Madhoo, Johny Lever, Sudhanshu Pandey, Sharat Saxena, Gurbachan.

Hema Malini herself puts in a cameo along with some critically acclaimed oldtimers such as Faroooq Sheikh, Deepti Naval and Madhu. Further, to make it pleasant to the movie watchers‘ eyes, this three episode drama is shot in three of the most picturesque locations, Rajasthan, Turkey and Goa. The packaging is near perfect.

Esha Deol is a writer who has been brought up by Farooq Sheikh and Deepti Naval with all the love and affection in the world, until one day she finds out that she is their adopted child.

Esha decides not to rest until she finds her real parents and discovers why they deserted her.

It has been 24 years and the municipal hospital is not sure it has all the records since a day after Esha was born; the hospital had caught a major fire. Esha‘s search leads her first to Vinod Khanna, a Rajasthani royal whose wife had a baby girl (though one wonders why a Rajasthan royal‘s wife should be delivering a baby in a Mumbai‘s municipal hospital!). She died in child birth but instructed her maid not to take the baby girl home since the thakur, Vinod Khanna, believed in and wanted only a male heir.

This section of the film also has some interesting behind-the-scene royal politics between Vinod Khanna‘s nephew and heir apparent. Esha wins over Vinod Khanna while proving she can do anything as well as or better than any son and makes him change his steadfast beliefs about a girl child. But then the maid who was a witness to the child‘s birth 24 years back reveals that it is not Esha but the girl she has brought up as her own who is his daughter.

Back to square one, Esha pays another visit to the municipal hospital‘s records department. This is quite enjoyable as Johny Lever is the clerk in charge (so what if his desk sports a symbol of Ashok Chakra!). The clerk has another father for Esha to visit, this time in Turkey, where Rishi Kapoor has shifted from his Bandra residence. Rishi Kapoor‘s wife, Turkish actor Meltem Cumbul, has taken her newborn‘s death in the hospital fire badly and gone into a shell ever since. When he sees that his wife is warming up to Esha, Rishi Kapoor goes along with her belief that finally she had found her parents. Meltem Cumbul is cured and Esha realises that these are not her parents but she was only used by Rishi Kapoor for his wife‘s sake.

It is third time lucky for Esha when her beau, Arjan Bajwa, finds out that there was one more possibility, Dharmendra, who is now a don in Goa. A love child of Dharmendra and Hema Malini, she had been abandoned by the latter to keep her away from her lover‘s illegal ways. Hema Malini herself became a nun!

Dharmendra‘s being a don also offers scope for an action climax. It all ends happily as all her ‘four fathers‘ are present for her wedding with Arjan Bajwa.

Tell Me O Khuda swings between the story of a girl in search of her antecedents and a do-gooder, a girl always in hurry to call every next person she traces as daddy.

It is a good idea treated in an old- fashioned way. The absence of a single director‘s vision is obvious. The film never touches you as nowhere does it make you feel sympathetic towards Esha‘s plight or cause. Esha Deol is as much to blame as is the treatment as both fall short of delivering. Music is of little help. Rest of the aspects are routine. Tell Me O Khuda is a poor contender at the box office.

Lavie releases first TVC with Kareena Kapoor

MUMBAI: Conceptualised by TBWA, handbag brand Lavie has launched its first ever TV commercial featuring the brand ambassador Kareena Kapoor.

The TVC for Lavie is created based on the notion of women with various moods, the company said.

TBWA India national creative director Rahul Sengupta said, “Probably, the most complex machine is the mind of a woman. It means one thing while it says something else. The statement is truest of all when a woman is shopping. If you have ever been a brother, suitor, husband or salesman, you will know. Watching this can be bemusing and amusing at the same time.”

The TVC captures the dilemma of the sales person who attends to innumerable women, with varied demands. It also highlights the perplexity of a woman who has a picture of requirement in mind but is unable to convey the same and is trying various options to come to a conclusion of what to shop for.

The TVC captures the essence of Lavie, which has bags for all the moods of today‘s jet-setting women.

Lavie business head Sandeep Goenka said, “Kapoor very well resembles the personality of Lavie and the association with her is synonymous with our brand. And with this ad, Kapoor captures the essence of shopping, for every woman with her proficient expressions. The Lavie collection offers stylish and accessible handbags for today‘s jet-setting women which are now readily available all over India.”

TBWA India MD Nirmalya Sen added, “We aren‘t the only brand that claims it has a wide range of styles and colours. But then, that truly is the competitive advantage of this brand – the widest range of colours, styles, genres of handbags. The challenge was to communicate range in a manner that is distinctive and endears the brand to its audience – confident, young, style-conscious women.”

The TVC is produced by 30 Secs of Fame and directed by Uzair Khan.
