Viacom18 completes merger of Prism TV

Mumbai: Viacom18 has completed merger of Prism TV Private Limited, thereby integrating five regional channels – Colors Kannada, Colors Marathi, Colors Bangla, Colors Odiya and Colors Gujarati within its fold.

Commenting on the merger, Viacom18 CEO Sudhanshu Vats said, “The regional entertainment broadcast pie commands ~30% viewership in the Indian broadcast space and as consumer preferences are moving towards segmented regional content, this share is only going to grow. This merger allows us to create a single brand that can leverage the individual strengths of the regional channels and harness synergies in terms of content strategy and business processes, helping us amplify long term value for Viacom18. I am particularly pleased that this process has been completed at an opportune time when we are gearing up to celebrate our 10th anniversary, in 2017, with a bigger and unified Team Viacom18.”

With this merger, not only the regional brands but also the Prism TV workforce will become part of Viacom18 and be assimilated seamlessly into its cultural ethos.

Viacom18 had recently launched Colors Super, its second Kannada GEC, further strengthening its share in the Kannada market which it already dominates with Colors Kannada. With this merger, the network seems poised to significantly dial up its regional play at a time when the regional GEC genre is fast emerging as the next ‘big thing’ in the Indian broadcast sector.

Sun TV announces two back to back soaps for Kannada GEC Udaya starting today

BENGALURU:  The Sun Network Limited (SNL) announced two back to back soaps that will start airing on its Kannada GEC Udaya starting today, April 11. The two shows – Aramane (Aspirations) and Sundari (Beauty) will air daily Monday to Friday at the 7.30 to 8.00pm and 8.00 to 8.30pmprimetime slots respectively.

Aramane is the story of an estranged couple and how their children try to inadvertently bring them together. Sanjay Pradhan is a superstar celebrity living with one of his daughters who wants her father to get married to someone as she yearns for a caring mother. She is made to believe that her mother is not alive, which is untrue. In the meanwhile, Sanjay’s wife Yamuna is leading a reticent life in a small village with her other daughter Smitha who wants to reunite her mother with the father. But she does not know who her father is. The answers to why Yamuna left her husband and if the couple will ever re-unite are just some of the many intriguing parts of the story to unfold.

Sundari is the journey of a 16-year-old girl whose family is settled in a foothill village of Western Ghats, besides the serene Sharavathi river. Studying in high school, Sundari has a friend called Naveen since childhood and this story narrates the life of these two. Sundari tries to evoke the nostalgia of viewers by narrating beautiful moments of her school life. How a small incident in her teenage life impacts her life forever is the crux for Sundari.

Speaking about the two shows, Udaya TV programming head Sudheendra said, “Sundari is a unique story of teenagers depicted as 10th standard students and addresses the feelings of teenage minds. Normally teenage kids will be out of parents’ sight for around 8 hours in a day. Parents feel secured about their children as they think that they’re safe in their schools. But, this is the time when teenagers get exposed to a lot of new things, new emotions. No one knows what these kids do when they are in their schools, particularly with their friends. Those trivial things that take place during this stage will have a long lasting impact in their lives. The story deals with these issues and narrates the journey of an innocent, pretty girl Sundari.”

“We live in a time where the personal lives of big and small screen celebrities seem to pique the interest of the media as well as the common man. But we forget the fact that once they remove their makeup, the celebrities are also just like us. They too have their families, worries, tensions and issues. Aramane very subtly deals with this theme. Sanjay Pradhan the central character of the story is a yesteryear superstar of the silver screen and he is separated from his wife. While one daughter is staying with him the other is with his wife. The story is all about the struggle of his two daughters where the daughter with her mother is trying to find out her lost father and the other daughter wants her father to get re-married. To summarize, it’s a very emotional and a sentimental story, yet very realistic,” said Sudheendra about Armane.

  • Suvarna to present first Kannada mythological daily Shivaleelamrutha

Suvarna to present first Kannada mythological daily Shivaleelamrutha

BANGALORE: Asianet’s Kannada GEC Suvarna is set to present Kannada television’s first daily mythological serial – Shivaleelamrutha.

Airing from 9 June, the serial is based on legendary stories of the Hindu deity Shiva.

Shivaleelamrutha will be telecast Monday to Friday, between 9 and 9.30 pm. It will replace Puranik’s historical daily serial ‘Sangoli Rayanna’ which has been moved to the weekend slot at the same time. The channel has roped in construction house Kristal as lead sponsor.

Producer-director Suneel Puranik has already canned 30 episodes (each 22-23 minutes long) of what could be a mega-opus spanning 260 episodes. The first phase calls for about 80 episodes.

“We are spending about Rs 150,000 per episode. If successful, we will extend it beyond 260 episodes,” informed Puranik while speaking to Indiantelevision.com. Puranik is the CEO of production house Samruddhi.

Each episode of a mythological like Shivaleelamrutha takes about three days to complete, as against two episodes per day for conventional serials, revealed Puranik. “One scene of around 4 minutes with animation and SFX, the background graphics, etc. took a whole day for composing, rendering and finishing,” added Puranik to stress that directing a mythological serial is a different ball game altogether as compared to conventional television content.

That Suvarana is betting big on this serial to bring in sagging ratings is obvious from the fact that it has set aside a Rs 6 million advertisement budget to be spent over 60 days. A big budget Kannada film spends less than this for marketing and advertisement, informs an industry source. Suvrana has booked 200 billboards across Karnataka and as well ads on major local newspapers across Karnataka to promote the serial.

Promos will run on both its channels – Suvarana and Suvarana News. The channel proposes to have radio jingles too. At present it is considering AIR, since the major Kannada stations in the city address a yuppie and younger generation, rather than the more serious Kannadiga. However, it has still not completely kept these stations off its radio advertisement radar altogether.

Cost of production has been the main inhibiting factor that has prevented the production of mythological serials in Karnataka. The Kannada industry does not permit dubbing of other language films and serials into Kannada. Hence, the Kannadiga has been deprived of mythological fare in the local lingo.

NDTV Imagine proved lucky with Ramayan and has restarted the trend with other GECs following suit. Suvarna hopes to repeat the same success recipe with Shivaleelamrutha in the state of Karnataka.
