Liva launches its new campaign #LiveYourFlow

Liva, the ingredient brand from the house of Aditya Birla Group, launched its latest campaign #LiveYourFlow which features Bollywood Superstar Kangana Ranaut. This is the first-time that the brand has taken a unique route of releasing the campaign first on digital platforms including social media.

“It was a strategic decision to the digital-first route,” said Srishti Sawhney, President and Global Brand Head, Grasim Industries, Pulp & Fibre Business. “Liva, being a new age natural fabric brand has always taken initiatives to connect with the end consumer in innovative and creative ways. There is a huge attitudinal and behavioral shift in consumption towards digital media. Therefore we too have evolved our marketing strategy to reach out to the customer more effectively,” she added.

With the digital space booming, Liva is one of the few brands which are leveraging this platform by employing a different dissemination strategy for the ad film; where it is released digitally first and other mediums will then follow.

The ad film shows a graceful Kangana adorning the fluid Liva fabric which lets her breathe, glide, and flow. The background music and the perfectly synchronized ballet dancers very aptly communicate the essence of the product, i.e. ‘natural fluid fashion’.  It goes on to introduce the campaign title, #LiveYourFlow by choosing the Liva tag across leading brands.

The digital film is designed to showcase not just the USP of the product, which is natural fluid fashion, but also the emotion it imbibes in the consumer who is wearing the garment. #LiveYourFlow, the campaign title gets across the feeling of being unrestrained and free to do one’s own thing. It connotes a positive and energized state of mind where one is open to possibilities. Liva celebrates the unrestrained and unhindered spirit of the consumers by providing them with a breathable, fluid fabric.

LIVA outshines in mall space with unique innovation

Mumbai:  Liva, the new age fabric brand from the Aditya Birla Group, is back with its unique campaign, a life size mannequin of the brand ambassador Kangana Ranaut dropped down across malls in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Pune.

This season the innovative campaign stands out in 54 malls across 26 cities. LIVA being the first ever brand to have the largest drop down with a size of 20 feet tall which enhanced outreach and gathered immediate attention in the over-crowded mall space. The main idea for the innovation was to create immediate recall in the last leg of the consumer journey.

The study across malls showed positive consumer response with 71% consumers noticing the drop down and  68% recalled seeing the innovative dropdown, out of which 54% appreciated the campaign. 77% of the consumers surveyed were able to resonate that LIVA was a fluid fabric and 3 out of 5 considered LIVA as a fabric brand.

Ms. Shardah Uniyal, Head – Branding & Communication, Birla Cellulose expressed, “The response from the innovation done last season was overwhelming, which was one of the many reasons why we re-launched the campaign with more innovative display. Being an ingredient it is imperative for the brand to get noticed and stand out in clutter. This innovation was aimed towards garnering maximum visibility and increasing foot falls for our partner brands in those malls and this campaign has successfully achieved the objective.”

Mr. Vishnu Telang, CEO – Khushi Advertising, commented “We worked upon the innovative idea given by Liva and further enhanced the look and workability of the innovative dropdown. The most demanding part of the campaign involved creating and putting up suspended 20 feet 3D dropdowns which portrayed the brand ambassador, Kangana Ranaut showcasing the resplendence of the fabric”.

  • Content is supreme, lyrics are vital, says Farhan Akhtar at NDTV conclave

Content is supreme, lyrics are vital, says Farhan Akhtar at NDTV conclave

MUMBAI: “If the story is not good, then no matter where you shoot the film it doesn’t matter. Content has to be supreme. There was a time when music became more important than lyrics. Audience would not even remember the lyrics. That is changing now. The thought that if you have one hit number in the movie and that can ensure success of the film is also changing,” said actor-director Farhan Akhtar at the NDTV conclave in New Delhi on Monday.

NDTV saw the culmination of its Youth for Change Conclave, a day-long event that aims to focus on solutions for challenges that our youth face today. This year saw a host of personalities from diverse fields come together to address the issues that are concerned with today’s youth.

The sessions also featured celebrities like Kangana Ranaut, Ajay Devgn, Arjun Kapoor, Ileana D’Cruz, Emraan Hashmi, Esha Gupta, Armaan Malik, Neeti Mohan, Irshad Kamil, Sachin Jigar and the stars of the women cricket team – Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami and Punam Raut, among others. The sessions covered issues ranging from Gender divide, challenges of fake news and is social media a bane or boon.

Ranaut shared the travails of being a superstar: “Big cities are money-oriented, small towns are more concerned about what people – buaji, mausiji – will say. I come from an extreme environment, a conservative background. I felt stifled and just wanted to be free. On being discriminated against as a child: I could never feel pride in my lineage and I don’t feel like I belong when I go home. I want to tell women that they should fight for their own dignity, be it against fathers, husbands or children.”

Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami, Punam Raut talked about setting new records against all odds.

Raj, Captain, Women Cricket Team, said: “PM Modi tweeting about the women’s team was a moment of pride for us. My grandparents did not want me to take up cricket. Cricket is not life to me. There is life beyond cricket too.”

Goswami, cricketer, said: “”World Cup final defeat will continue to hurt all of us. After beating Pakistan in the World Cup league match, even their fans applauded us. Unfortunately only one day out of 365 is celebrated as Women’s Day.”

Arjun Kapoor, actor, shared his views on the gender divide: “”I am not very educated. I didn’t clear my Class 11. But, my upbringing has been such that despite this lack of education, I got a chance to move on in my life to do what I wanted to do. I don’t think women get such opportunity. I have grown up among women, predominantly with my sister and mother, and I have seen how strongly women face adversity. We should incorporate it in the syllabus itself how men should treat women. We always hear, ‘Stop crying like a woman.’ We inadvertently are implying that women are the weaker gender. I have a sister and somewhere there is always a concern about her safety. It is not just about urban or rural areas, world over security of women is an area of concern. We are moving forward and progress is everyone’s right. It cannot be gender specific. Gender parity means that both are equal not one is superior to the other.”

Armaan Malik, singer: “I was a 10-year-old when I got to know that I am from Music composer Hasrat Jaipuri’s family. In my family everybody is a composer, I am the first one to get into singing. My grandmother makes me listen to Hasratji’s music and always asks me if such good music is being composed today as well. I feel good music is still being created.”

Irshad Kamil, lyricist: “Today the films are closer to reality and so the scope of music in the films have gone down.”

Sachin-Jigar, music composer duo: “The shelf life of songs have not gone down. Today lot more songs are being made and so audience has a lot of options to keep sifting through. But good songs live on for a long time even today.”

Ajay Devgn, actor: “Always look ahead and not dwell on the past, just focus on rectifying the errors as we move forward.”

Emraan Hashmi, actor, said: “If you are from a family connected with film industry then getting a break may be easier but at the end of the day you have to be good in acting. At the end of the day the audience is the decision maker. There is more pressure on ‘star kids’.”

  • Rangoon… What a debacle!

MUMBAI: Every filmmaker wants his own ‘all time classic’ and it is best not to confuse such a filmmaker with a realistic, practical maker with business sense. This lot is usually pretentious and indulgent kind. He wants his own Gone With The Wind, a Doctor Zhivago, Mary Poppins, Sholay, Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! or even Dangal. When too many films from the past influence your script and you try to take a bit from each one, the result is Rangoon.

Rangoon is supposed to be a period musical love triangle. But, even before reaching the love triangle part, the film meanders too much with stuff that has no relevance — like the capturing of a Japanese soldier by Shahid Kapoor, which is treated like fun and games.

This period drama is based during World War II. The Burma campaign as it was called, was a serious business as the Japanese army had taken over Rangoon and had Assam in mind next. Here the Japanese army personnel in groups of three or so are shown hanging around as if on a picnic! The British side of the army consists mainly of Indians and a few Sikhs to make it easy for the viewer to identify them.

What the British generals and army personnel do in the film could have been made into a full-blown comedy on the lines of Mel Brooks’ movie, History Of The World II.

Shahid Kapoor, playing an army man fighting on the Burma front, has been captured by the Japanese. He is granted release thanks to intervention by the Indian National Army of Subhash Chandra Bose. But, he is also sermonised by the INA to enroll and serve the interest of the country rather than the British. He agrees and when he goes back to the British general, he is a mole for INA.

During this serious war where the untrained British army is always on the defensive and losing ground, the general in charge, Richard McCabe, thinks his army men need some entertainment. So what if Japanese planes are bombing his troops? In the film, the Japanese are either economical or considerate for they only drop a single bomb instead of the carpet bombing as is the norm during a war.

Kangana Ranaut’s character is invited to entertain the army men on the Burma front. Her character is reportedly modelled on Fearless Nadia, the Australian born queen of Hindi action movies in the 1940s. Kangana, the paramour of her producer, Saif Ali Khan, plays a similar role to Fearless Nadia’s man in real life. Saif and Kangana are madly in love with each other so much so he is ready to divorce his wife. Was this part needed at all?

Kangana proceeds to Imphal to entertain the army. A free and fearless kind that she is, she is not ready to be protected by anybody but Shahid has been appointed as her bodyguard. A situation is created so that Saif, who was to accompany her, can’t do that anymore because his father has suffered a heart attack. (But when Saif reaches his father, Gerson Da Cunha, the father is reading a Gujarati newspaper which has a banner headline about Germany’s partition……..and this is only 1943!)

Kangana arrives at the army base which consists of a few junior artistes dressed in olive fatigues. It does not matter that the Indian and British army both wore mostly khaki in those days. The general, McCabe, is depicted as a sadistic buffoon and comes across as more entertaining than the invited guests. He likes to quote Ghalib, recites Indian classical ragas and makes all kinds of faces.

At this point, the writer and director seem to have forgotten that Kangana is renowned for her onscreen stunts and action and not dancing. Once on the border, all she does is sing and dance at the drop of a hat!

If Kangana can turn a dancer from being a stunt queen, she can also shed her deep-rooted love for Saif and start making out with Shahid on day two without much ado. That done, she also falls in love with Shahid in due course while also being in love with Saif. It is all very complicated.

Time to bring in a shade of patriotism, now. There is a Maharaja, Amrit Pal, who owns a sword which, he claims, if donated to INA, can raise enough money to throw the British out of India and pave the way for the INA to march to Delhi to realise their motto of ‘DilliChalo’. Somehow, the sword has landed at the Burma front and Shahid is supposed to deliver it to the INA on the other side of the bridge. Now, how many films have had their climax over or across a bridge? And what happened to the love triangle?

Rangoon is such a tacky film, neither the writer nor the director seem to know what it is about as they jump to a new track every so often after shelving an old one inconclusively. No research seems to have been done on the subject. The script is full of inconsistencies and irrelevant subplots. No character is properly defined. The result is 247 minutes of patience trying tedium.

The script is episodic without sticking to a theme. Editing is nonexistent. Direction is poor with experimental stage approach. Music is bad and, yet, as many as a dozen tracks are forced in. The lyrics are incomprehensible.

Why do makers of period films go on to make good-looking actors look ugly? Saif, with his sticky wig and wrinkled face looks aged. He has lost the palm of his right hand and wears an ugly detachable appendage which, again, is of no consequences except indulgence. Shahid is scarred, muddy or has his face blackened most of the time. Kangana looks painted and dons a silly wig. All three fail to impress in this film. The film has a few well penned dialogues. Art direction is not convincing. Stunts are oft seen.

Period films are a bad idea and some recent examples: Pankaj Kapur’s Mausam (2011), Kunal Kohli’s Teri Meri Kahaani (2012) and Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet (2015).

Rangoon is a very poorly conceived and executed film. A classic happens but, when you plan one, you come up with a Rangoon, a debacle!

Producers: Sajid Nadiadwala, Vishal Bhardwaj, Viacom 18.

    Director: Vishal Bhardwaj.

Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Shahid Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut, Richard McCabe, Alex Avery, Gerson da Cunha.
