Basu upbeat about Star World’s ‘India’s Child Genius’

NEW DELHI: Known for its exploits in the edutainment genre and production of the adaptations of the international formats, Synergy Communications is all set for one of the much-awaited shows India’s Child Genius (ICG), scheduled to go on air 16 May on Star World.

Following a hectic selection process and shooting scheduling, Synergy director Anita Kaul Basu, said, “We have just completed a mammoth shoot schedule of ICG. The scale of the series is daunting and it was a challenge to shoot 20 preliminaries of the series in one fell swoop. Despite it being a huge logistical exercise – 16 kids per episode, 7 cameras, special effect lighting, online computer and game software and set changes, the show is looking a million dollars!!”

According to Basu, the essence of the Fox format has been retained with game variations and the elimination process in each episode.

“We created everything around this basic format. The sets, graphics, opening montage, music, the game software and research. It’s a more pacey and exciting show. Other than Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), which was technically and production wise very elaborate, ICG had complexities of a different nature. It’s a huge show, big sets and more participants per episode. The format is constantly evolving as the show progresses. It took us a good four hours to shoot each episode.”

The content has been developed by Synergy in association with academic experts and Educational Initiatives (EI), who conduct the ASSET evaluation, which is a leading scholastic test in India for students of Class 3-9.

“One of the major hurdles in the pre-production stage of ICG was the selection procedure. Unlike countries such as the US, India hasn’t got a fast track system to spot exceptional and bright kids. Unlike the international Fox format, which is an annual episode with 40 or so participants, here there will be 320 participants. The quiz has been structured into 20 preliminary rounds, four zonal final and two semifinals apart from the final,” says Basu.

On kids programming gaining prominence with specialised shows and expected new channels in the kids genre, she said, “I think all Indian channels across the board are realising the need to target the children’s segment. For advertisers and marketing people the potential is enormous for targeting this band. There has been very little and perhaps no programming for children barring a few short films and serials. We have to develop edutaining programming for children,” she said.

“ICG is the first instance of a channel coming up with a series so large in scale combined with high production values. Its thrown open an opportunity and provided a forum for children to showcase their talent. Kids of today have a voice, are intelligent and discerning and they need to be heard as well as an adult. They cannot be talked down to and definitely need to exhibit their talent and intelligence on a medium like TV that is so powerful. More power to sane, balanced and intelligent programming for kids of the 21st century!” said Basu.

On opening up of more avenues with its first production on Star World, Basu said, “We have produced a variety of programmes for Star – from a debate programme A Question of Answers, a science series Eureka, game shows 321, KBC and Kamzor Kadii Kaun. Star has invariably pulled all stops for the success of each and every programme. Their programming, marketing and sales are based on intelligent and sound research. They have been able to look at programming as king and have got in the best in term of producers, technicians and creative people to work on their productions. As far as Synergy is concerned, going onto the Star World banner is an opportunity to work with Star again and in English language programming.”

Star Plus on a two-year high; readies fresh programming

3 July may not be its official birthday, but it marks a day when Star Plus was reborn and launched a gameshow that was to rewrite the script of Indian television – Kaun Banega Crorepati.

    “9 Baj gaye kya?”

Two year’s on, there is no KBC, but Star Plus continues to lord it over the TV landscape with the Balaji soaps Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki leading the charge.

KBC may be officially taking a sabbatical right now, but the channel that reaped the rich harvest of its success is celebrating the gameshow’s birthday with a spate of new shows across genres.

The Tuesday prime time slot, vacated by Kamzor Kadii Kaun and Asoka The Series is now to be filled with Kehta Hai Dill a family serial that takes its inspiration from Picket Fences, beginning today. Neena Gupta, who enjoyed a cult following for her Saans on Star Plus will be back on the channel with Kyon Hota Hay Pyar on Thursdays at 8 pm, with a campus story on teenage romance and fun. Sonpari’s success has spawned another kids’ show on the channel, Shakalaka Boom Boom, a UTV production about a boy and his magic pencil that brings to life anything he draws with it.

Another UTV series Khichidi, that starts in September on Tuesdays at 8 pm will delve into the “deliciously wicked side of all human beings” and will look at the lighter side of mankind.

Hai Na Bolo Bolo a Sunday 11 am show, to be hosted by Nausheen of Kkusum fame, is a song-based game show “full of music and mischief”. Sunday mornings however are going to belong to devotion and mysticism on the channel. The “divine” addition is Vandana, a three hour Sunday morning band consisting of three shows – Jai Mata Ki (with Hema Malini in the lead), Gurukul (a show on the ancient wisdom of India, hosted by Sakshi Tanwar) and Yatra (a pilgrimage tour with Deepti Bhatnagar for a guide).

The channel that claims to have a grip on the the afternoon band as well, is launching Kumkum – Pyaara Sa Bandhan from 15 July at 3:30 pm. Another new show, Chupe Chehre goes on air Fridays at3:00 pm from September.

The channel has also lined up blockbusters to hook the film buff too with Dil Chahta Hai, Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega, Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi, Ajnabee, Raaz and other movies lined up for the coming months.

“Catch me if you can” is the challenge that Star is throwing to its rivals.

Star Plus Lightens the mood as soap opera Fatigue Sets in

Come Monday and Star Plus will tickle the funny bone with Krishna Sharma – C.A. Yesterday producers Cinevistaas Ltd. and Contiloe Films Pvt. Ltd. announced the launch of the weekly comedy series. The show airs from 8-8:30pm.

With game show Kamzor Kadii Kaun and the Balaji Soaps Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki showing a gradual drop in ratings. Star Plus needed to do something different to maintain its leadership status by ensuring viewer loyalty.

Also Star Plus lags behind in the comedy genre where rivals like Sabe TV and Sony Entertainment Television have scored points with shows like Office Office and Hubahu.

Krishna Sharma C.A. represents the second venture between between Cinevistaas Ltd. and Contiloe Films Pvt. Ltd.The first venture Shhh… Koi Hai is a suspense drama that airs in the night on the channel.

On Star Plus Cinevistaas also has the religious show Dharam Aur Hum. The show hosted by Anup Jalota airs every Sunday morning. Cinevistaas also has the mythological Draupadi running on Sahara TV.

The director of Krishna Sharma C.A. Vijay Krishna Acharya said that the aim was to strike a delicate balance between serious and comic elements without sounding preachy. The show has a slapstick element to it. The show is also aiming to hit a nerve by dealing with basic issues that affect everyday lives like eve teasing, dowry, the controversial issue of child marriage. The focus is on the clever manner in which the lead protagonist gets out of tricky situations. Each episode deals with the intensity of a different issue.

He also said that though Krishna Sharma is a cartoon artist the word C.A. could lead to people thinking of a chartered accountant. Through the title the director said that he wanted to put across the point that the nature of people can be both dual and deceptive.

Regarding his background he mentioned that he aided Kundan Shah for three years on Kabhie Na Kabhie.

He also mentioned that he had earlier worked on a pilot for Cinevistaas. He also pointed out the difference between working for national broadcaster Doordarshan and private channels. With DD one has to take care of advertising in addition to conceptualising the story. However one has the rights to the show.

With a private channel things work in a reverse fashion. Finding advertisers is the channels headache but the rights remain with them. It is somewhat similar to writing an article for a newspaper he said.

The channel also pitches the idea to the show producers and the show is monitored by an executive producer for the channel. Abrupt changes in future episodes are not uncommon if ratings are not upto scratch.

About the choice of Shradhha Nigam for the title role he said that he found that she was able to tackle subtlety and difficulties of different situations in a natural fashion. He also found her quick on the uptake.

Anjan Srivastava plays Krishna Sharma’s father. He said, ” This concept is about true spirit and what television is all about i.e. a programme about ethical values with a message for the common man’. Other cast members include Ravi Baswani, Neelu Kohli, Sandeep Mehta.

  • Zee launches reality show ‘Raaah’ tomorrow

Zee launches reality show ‘Raaah’ tomorrow

It’s no Prisoner Of War but India’s first homegrown reality show in the action genre is finally launching on the Zee Network.

Last year Zee TV had announced with much fanfare that it was launching a reality show Prisoners Of War loosely modelled on the successful UK show Jailbreak. Those plans however were shelved but the channel is all set to unleash Romance, Adventure Aap Aur Hum (Raaah). Launching tomorrow at noon it will air on Sundays.

Miditech (promoted by Nikhil and Niret Alva) has produced the show which has been billed as India’s first adventure-reality game show. Game shows are not a new phenomenon to Indian television but what makes this one different from the likes of Star’s Kaun Banega Crorepati and Kamzor Kadii Kaun is that the contest incorporates adventure.

Raaah tests the physical, mental and emotional endurance of its participants. The participants consist of five married couples who have to confront an extreme environment. They compete against each other. Each couple operates as a team in the show which is shot over four hectic days.

Miditech CEO Nikhil Alva made these remarks: ” Its going to be the first reality show on Indian television. We have produced a totally new format and not an Indian version of any Western reality shows. With such a show there is always a great degree of unpredictability, since there is no telling how real people will react in a given situation. We will transmit real excitement, adventure and romance onto the screen.”

The teams have to play different types of sports which will test their dexterity and stamina. They include yak riding & shepherding, mountain biking, four-wheel drive rallies, rappelling, trekking, white-water rafting and camping in the wilderness. Every day performances are evaluated and one couple is eliminated. Two couples battle it out on the fourth and final day for the grand prize.

Apartments, the latest cars, luxury cruises, adventure gear are some of the goodies on offer. Vrajesh Hirjee will anchor Raaah.

A release states that the first few episodes of Raaah have already been shot on location in the gruelling locales of the Spiti Valley in Himachal Pradesh. Elaborating further on the new initiative Niret Alva says: “We conducted an extensive location search and decided upon the Spiti Valley as the perfect backdrop for the first show. Raaah in Hindi stands for The Way and we firmly believe that Raaah is the way forward for Indian Television.”

Miditech had previously done Hospital but Raaah has proved to be far more logistically challenging. The production called for a crew as large as 70 people including seven camera units, as well as adventure and safety instructors, given the complex technical requirements. The challenge is that the areas are remote and are difficult to enter into. There are no communication systems in place. Both in front of the camera and behind, teamwork is often the deciding factor.

Miditech was founded in 1993. Its other reality based shows and programmes also include Kahani Jurm Ki on Star Plus and “Kuch Yaadein Kuch Baatein which will shortly be telecast on Star Gold. Other shows the company has made include Living On The Edge the first and longest running environment series. Then there was The Great Escape a travel show; and Hospital.

Miditech has also produced film-based programmes, talk and game shows by the Entertainment division. The films division has also come out with path breaking natural history, exploration shows, historical and social documentaries. The Infotainment division covers lifestyle, travel and information technology shows. The fiction division makes real life drama and soap operas. The current affairs division news handles analysis, political talk shows, reality and environment programmes.

  • Star claims excellent response for ‘Kamzor Kadii Kaun’

Star claims excellent response for ‘Kamzor Kadii Kaun’

Gameshow Kaun Banega Crorepati may be singing its swan song tonight but Star Plus has been making sure that the grass does not grow beneath its feet in the 9-10pm slot.

The channel claims that the debut of the new gameshow hosted by actress Neena Gupta Kamzor Kadii Kaun has beaten Sony’s Kkusum and Kutumb hands down in the rating’s sweepstakes.

On Christmas day at 9pm KKK drew TAM ratings of 6.3 across 9 cities. Also the shows share and TVR have meant that the previous six weeks average on Tuesday’s has doubled. As far as share is concerned it is a normal 10.7 per cent. With the show it shoots up to 21 per cent. The TVR with KKK is 6.2. Take it away and the figure is exactly half. The six weeks average audience goes up from 1.1 million to 2.1 million. KKK ranked 11th was the third most popular program on 25 December, a company release says. Kyunki Saas…. and Kahani Ghar Ghar Kii took the top two spots.

Star also claims that for the week 23-29 December 2001 it had 40 programmes in the top 50 while no competitor featured in the top 16.

Coming back to KKK, the question that remains is whether the show can sustain these figures. It will take a ratings figures from a few more episodes to provide one with a better idea of whether the show, which is the Indian avatar of BBC’s The Weakest Link has clicked with the Indian junta or not. But the start has certainly been encouraging.

  • Sony’s stakes claim as frontrunner in 9-10 pm band

Sony’s stakes claim as frontrunner in 9-10 pm band

The soap brigade has elbowed its way into the top position in the 9 to 10 pm band as well. The waning KBC has helped Sony’s Kkusum and Kutumb climb to the top of the charts, even as Star continues to hold sway with two more Balaji soaps in the 10-11 pm slot.

Kkusum, Sony says, has registered a steady rise in ratings, with the TAM ratings for the week ending 1 December, putting Kkusum at 8.6. Kutumb, the saga of a couple who get married for vengeful purposes, has apparently been a consistent favourite with viewers from the first week. The channel claims an ‘incredible high of 6.6 in only the fourth week after its launch’, quoting TAM ratings for the week ended 1 December. The sample covers the north and west (Mumbai, Delhi, Kanpur, Ahmedabad, Ludhiana, Rest of Maharashtra and Rest of Uttar Pradesh).

Kkusum, a daily soap on weekdays, is the only show to have toppled KBC from its perch in the 9 pm slot, claims Sony. Kutumb, which runs Mondays through Thursdays, is the channel’s latest offering, but has already established a lead in its slot at 9:30 pm.

SET needs to ensure that both the soaps hold viewer interest, with Star just having brought in the Neena Gupta hosted Kamzor Kadii Kaun (airing Tuesdays at 9 pm). Star is also introducing another serial Sanjivani, that promises to be quite gripping, based as it is on the US series Chicago Hope. Sanjivani will take the 9 pm slot on Wednesdays from 16 January 2002.
