Godrej Appliances focuses on consumer experience in festive offering

Mumbai: The Appliances business of Godrej & Boyce, part of Godrej Enterprises Group, announced its festive offers for the consumers taking forward the philosophy of “Things Made Thoughtfully” from products to brand’s festive season offerings as well. The brand has kept user experience at the heart of its festive promise.

On one hand, with better financing options, customers are increasingly willing to upgrade and invest in premium appliances and appliances’ life has witnessed a decline; on the other hand, research indicates that warranty, durability and after sales service continues to be key factors for consumers when buying appliances. This explains the growing Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC) sales in the industry particularly in categories like air conditioners which witness heavy usage given the high heat levels in the country. Unfortunately, hidden charges and complex terms in many of the warranties available in the market detract from the consumer’s long-term experience.

Addressing this need, Godrej Appliances has introduced  five year comprehensive warranty for Split Air Conditioners at no extra cost. This free warranty, worth Rs 7990/-, offers complete coverage with no hidden fees, no registrations, ensures that customers are protected against additional costs like gas charging, technician visits etc. The goal is simple: to provide a worry-free, delightful experience across the product’s life.

Apart from this, the brand also announced extended warranties on products like refrigerators and washing machines. The brand is also offering exciting promotions across its range, including cashback schemes up to Rs 12000/-, and flexible financing options, including no-cost EMIs and zero down payments.

Godrej Appliances business head & executive VP Kamal Nandi commented on the initiative, saying, “At Godrej Appliances, we believe in offering not just superior products but also unmatched service and customer value. Our honest-offer of a five year comprehensive warranty on Split Air Conditioners is a significant step in ensuring that our customers can enjoy long-term comfort with complete peace of mind, free from any hidden costs.”

In addition to the campaign, Godrej Appliances is also offering an array of AI-powered appliances designed to optimise performance and enhance convenience, high-capacity models across segments tapping into the premiumisation trend and new attractive designs for consumers to pick from.

“Godrej Appliances has always been particular about its philosophy of customer centricity”: Swati Rathi

In a recent survey conducted by Godrej Appliances, insights into the preferences of Indian households shed light on a growing demand for appliances that align with their home décor. Over 70 per cent of respondents expressed a desire for a broader selection of appliances that better suit their living spaces. This underscores a shift towards a more holistic approach to home design, where every element contributes to a cohesive aesthetic.

Indiantelevision.com at the sidelines of the event, caught up with Godrej Appliances marketing head Swati Rathi, where she unveiled the inception of their product launch. From the genesis of the idea to its execution, Rathi shed light on the journey behind this endeavor.

    Edited excerpts

On the inspiration to develop this new product

Like we said a couple of things, if you look at the cities, its changing. Even in tier two cities instead of independent houses, it’s becoming more multistoried complex. People are getting distanced from their natural environment. So that was one. If you look at consumer homes, everything is warm and aesthetic. Even the light and the paint has become warm whites instead of cold, various appliances are still in that whole space. From fans, to speakers to sinks and bathutbs, everything is driven by aesthetics. But that shift in aesthetic system did not happen in appliances because 30 years back. With young consumers buying homes, they are investing so much in design and decor so we thought there was this gap which no one has failed. At Godrej, we take great pride in being able to pinpoint these gaps from time to time and fulfill them. That’s what we’ve done with true commitment to “Soch ke Banaya” philosophy. We decided to get these nature inspired natural finishes in our products and wooden in particular because if we look at the survey as well, 50 per cent to 80 per cent Indian homes actually have wooden furnishings. 80 per cent in living rooms and 50 per cent in kitchens. 25 per cent in Indian homes have fridges in the living rooms. So it made a lot of sense to give them wooden finishes in multiple shades, which would really go well with the home. So that’s what’s really been the whole story behind it.

On the specific market research incorporated to this development

Every year we run a brand track. We understand what the consumer is looking at. We understand that aesthetics is becoming increasingly important right now. Consumer will never come and say “I want this”. Consumer will however show demonstrate by his behaviour. Whenever we launch a beautiful aesthetic product, we’ve seen the kind of reaction and how it’s changed the shares in that segment. So clearly, aesthetics is important. Then we did a lot of surveying and talking with the furniture industry and the decor industry. That’s where we picked up these insights. When consumers come in, they spend so much time figuring out everything, from the wallpaper, to the floor, to the curtain to everything. But when it comes to appliances, they’re like I have to choose between these. Now I have to do this or okay let me now try and match everything else to this. But when you have only so many choices to begin with, it’s a big restriction. It was a mix of qual and quant and that’s how we realised that this is possibly a need gap.

On the unfiltered consumer reaction video that you captured

The idea really came because we had a trade launch. We were about to show these products to our trade. We thought before we show it to our trade, it’s important that we also validate with our consumers and give that confidence back to our trade partners. Because its something that’s completely new, right? You would want to understand more how consumers react. We know we are fairly confident that what we’ve done is good, but it’s still important to get that consumer validation. So we decided to, instead of a typical survey where we showcase the product, we wanted to give them a store experience. We lined up the products exactly like how they would see in a store. You come to a store, you see an aisle of air conditioners, you see an aisle of refrigerators, you walk through a complete lineup of them. We just placed these two refrigerators and the reaction was completely unfiltered. They had no clue. All we said was we want younger consumers because that’s what this whole product is catering to. And we said let’s potential consumers in this age group with this kind of profile. We said, we just want some time, we call them over and what you saw was just immediate reactions epic capture.

On the collaboration with Krsnaa Mehta

Krsnaa Mehta’s role essentially was after the products were designed. We went to him. The design of the product is in-house if we didn’t go into appliances, but we went to him because we felt that he bought these great looking products. It’s something new and consumers while it will blend in with whatever they have, but how do we help them take it a notch above? So you’re giving them great looking products? But can you help them? Imagine what else can they do in that space to really make it far more useful almost like those Pinterest homes that consumers look at, but they don’t know how to create it. So that’s what the whole collaboration was about. He created all these designs, in which we will now take those designs into our catalogs, into the stores and use them as aides for consumers to help them imagine how their homes could look like.

The second thing is India Circus offerings are very nature inspired. We approached them and we said, let’s come together and we selected certain accessories. For example cushions whether in the bedroom or in the living room, wherever you put the air conditioner, you do tend to have all these upholstery and cushions, etc. The idea is don’t just have a beautiful wooden machine on top but can you get that same nature, inspiration even around the product when you open the refrigerator? Can you carry that nature inspired philosophy inside, so you have this fridge where, which is also nature inspired? And that’s where the whole thing came along.

On this product launch aligning with Godrej’s vision for the future

So Godrej appliances has always been very particular about its philosophy of customer centricity and it’s not that we are doing it now or started doing it today. It’s been there forever. We were the first to launch Indian manufacturer refrigerators in the country. We went ahead and launched color refrigerators in the country. We experimented with multiple sizes and got people to evolve. In the green space, there have been a lot of firsts. Last year, we launched the dark edition, which was again a game changer in the way things were displayed in the stores and was received very well. Whether in terms of functionality, for example, the anti leak ACs, which fix a particular need gap. So how do we fix the leaking ACs? Because in so many years of air conditioners, that’s not being fixed by any brand. Every time we spot a need gap, we try and fix it and I think that’s what we are and that’s what our DNA is. Aesthetics, in times to come will continue to play a bigger role. I think six months down the line one year down the line, you will have a lot more coming from it.

On aesthetics mattering back in the old days and its role in today’s age

In sea of whites, I think it might have mattered, but consumers didn’t really have enough choice also. I think the ownership of homes is one very interesting statistic that we saw today was how the age of homeowners is coming down. Earlier people used to buy their homes after they retired or close to their retirement, it took them so long to buy a home. Whereas today, thanks to home loans and increasing disposable income, the younger generation is also able to buy earlier in their life. When a younger person is able to buy a home, they’re calling friends or they want their homes to look a particular way. People are paying attention to which was not the case earlier. So things have changed.

Godrej Appliances rides on design innovation- launches wood-finish, nature-inspired ACs & Refrigerators

Mumbai: Godrej Appliances, part of Godrej & Boyce, flagship company of the Godrej Group, has launched Eon Vogue, a new series of nature-inspired wood-finish home appliances. The range, comprising advanced Refrigerators and Air Conditioners, offers a unique blend of aesthetics and technology that complements contemporary Indian home décor and lifts it many notches.

According to a survey of Indian households conducted by the brand, over 70 per cent of respondents said they would like to see more options of appliances that suit their home décor better. More than half said they want everything to be well-matched in their homes.

Speaking about the new launch, Godrej Appliances business head & executive VP Kamal Nandi said, “The average age of home ownership has been coming down and is said to be in thirties now, given the increasing disposable incomes and easily accessible loans. These young Indian consumers put in a lot of effort doing up their homes, ensuring everything blends into a coherent design, but face a constraint when it comes to the aesthetics of their appliances versus the décor of their home. Aesthetics is a key purchase driver today, amidst the ongoing wave of premiumization. True to Godrej Appliances’ philosophy of things made thoughtfully, the brand has once again innovated to plug this need gap with its unique one of its kind offering of Nature Inspired, Wood-Finish range of Air Conditioners and Refrigerators – The Godrej Eon Vogue Series. Coupled with other premium launches, the brand aims to up its premium segment contribution from 45% to 55% and boost summer growth to 20% with a robust product portfolio.”

Highlighting the thought behind the design, Godrej Appliances head of design Kamal Pandit said, “We observed our rapidly changing cities with large multi-storeyed buildings replacing independent houses and noticed consumers getting distanced from nature. We also observed how Indian homes exude warmth while appliances operate in a relatively cold space with glass and steel in blacks and silvers. We chose to take inspiration from nature, and came up with natural wood finish appliances in multiple shades, to blend and complement our homes, while keeping the practicality intact. The Eon Vogue series are water, stain, and scratch resistant, easy to clean, and durable.”

To aid consumers in experiencing and adopting the design transformation in their homes, the brand has collaborated with India Circus founder & design director for a customized home design guide, showcasing the new Eon Vogue series in different home décor styles and specially curated nature inspired India Circus accessories worth upto Rs 1999/- for the first one thousand customers.

Speaking on the launch, Mehta added, “The new wood-finish series from Godrej Appliances is a welcome new entrant to the world of décor in India. I appreciate the integration of nature-inspired elements in design, and you can see the same on display at India Circus as well. Wood being a natural finish, is versatile, aligning well with different décor styles. I have showcased the same in my design guide and to help consumers adopt the design in its true spirit, we have also curated some of India Circus’s special nature-inspired accessories – fridge ware and cushions as gifts for consumers, to complement the Vogue series of Refrigerators and Air Conditioners respectively. We hope this helps consumers to have a more wholesome experience of nature-inspired design in their homes.”

Godrej Appliances aims to reach 80% capacity by July 2020

NEW DELHI: Home appliances player Godrej Appliances today launched new products and aims to reach full production facility from August onwards.

The company shared that the pandemic has impacted badly the sales figures and the company reported a revenue loss of 40-45 per cent. April was a complete washout as there was no business.

Godrej Appliance business head and executive VP Kamal Nandi said, “Sales in May were at 30-35 per cent on average, while in June it is already at last year's level. 95-97 per cent market has begun which is encouraging for the industry we will reach 80 per cent capacity in July and full capacity from August. Godrej Appliances said sales in May was at 35-40 per cent of last year, while in June it is already at last year's level. Industry too has reached 90 per cent of pre-Covid2019 level sales. We expect sales will improve from July onwards and will be better than pre-Covid2019 till the festive season. We expect to reach 80 per cent capacity in July and full capacity from August."

He also shared that the last two months saw a demand for cooling products.

Nandi explained that the self-reliance campaign by the government will boost confidence among manufacturers, “The #MakeinIndia, and vocal for local will bring opportunities not only for local players to establish but will help big players as well in terms of doing business and it will enhance manufacturing, which will lead to more demands.”

He added that manufacturing, logistics and services were affected in the lockdown. Godrej Appliances faced issues on the service front as customers are not allowing mechanics to enter their homes. So, it is helping customers to do the product services by themselves, and at the same time re-building confidence among customers.

Nandi said, “The company has plans to expand into newer categories for products which are in demand right now and there will

be no immediate price hike since commodity prices are stable but any duty changes by the government will have an impact.”

Since the Covid2019 pandemic placed restrictions on large scale gatherings, Godrej Appliances has been the first in the industry to swiftly adapt to launching new products in a virtual format. These zone wise segregated launches were designed to engage with 5000+ trade partners from the comfort of their home.

Godrej Appliances national sales head Sanjeev Jain said, ‘’At the beginning of the lockdown, we took the herculean task of enabling our network of trade partners to reach customers digitally. We have been breaking barriers across all fronts – from product cataloging and showcasing, multiple cashless online payment facilities to initiation of video-assisted remote selling initiative. By exploring alternative ways to communicate and engage, we were able to offer fantastic opportunities to our trade partners. We plan to launch new products across the year across different segments."

  • Covid19’s impact on the advertising & marketing world

Covid19’s impact on the advertising & marketing world

MUMBAI: The deadly Covid19 has put every country in an alarming situation with the economic impact of the pandemic disease being immediate for certain industries.

To understand the effect of this global health crisis on the advertising, marketing, and consumer durables indiantelevision.com spoke to industry experts. They think that this crisis will have large-scale disruption in the coming months. They are of the opinion that the ad industry will be tremendously impacted as the two most important factors for advertising, product availability and consumer sentiment, are both headed south.

“Large-scale disruption is coming and the real impact is to be seen in the coming months. For one, on a global scale, events are being cancelled as a precautionary measure and this will impact the B2B marketing space. The impact of events and conferences is big on the marketing services industry and not so much the mainstream advertising or social media advertising industry. However, from the mainstream perspective, it's an opportunity to magnify reach and brands will jump to use this to spread public service messages veiled with their brand connections,” says Socxo CMO and program head Ajit Narayan.

According to Narayan, there will be supply shortage as many of the Asian suppliers and more Chinese suppliers have already started pulling back on raw material and other equipment needed to complete the product. Without products to supply, what will be advertised?

Additionally, there will be buying postponement by consumers and a recession like behaviour which nobody anticipated will come so fast.  The sentiments are already echoing in the stock markets.

Sharing the same views Godrej Appliances business head and executive vice president and CEAMA president Kamal Nandi said: “The coronavirus attack had a negative impact on consumer durables sector due to its dependency on imports from China – be it for finished goods or components. A price increase of up to 3 per cent for consumer durables, such as televisions sets, air conditioners, refrigerators, and microwaves is anticipated from March 2020 onwards. It mainly contributed to the short supply of components and finished goods due to Coronavirus outbreak, apart from the duty increase on certain components like compressors and motors and in some cases on finished goods.”

The ad business may take a hit in the near future as any health-related problem always lowers the market sentiment. “The Coronavirus is a big one given the huge impact it has on China and its spread across many countries. It adversely impacts business given China has millions of dollars of exports and this affects the world markets The stock market dip has a negative impact on the market and businesses. The first thing that gets affected is brand advertising, still seen as an expenditure. In a low sentiment market mostly the essentials get purchased and indulgence has to wait for better times,” echoes Havas Media chief executive officer Anita Nayyar.

With more than 4000 deaths, borderlines being shut and life at a halt there’s still so much we don’t know. In this scenario, media plays a pivotal role in providing correct information without blowing it out of proportion. This is the hype of panic which needs to be controlled.

Meanwhile there are necessary steps brands can take to manage Coronavirus crisis. Narayan says, “Brands will get recognition for active steps they take as precautions and not the typical advertising at this juncture. The trend of remote work which was very slow is gaining momentum now. This could trigger a pivot in the real estate industry as the towers of offices could get impacted without physical office presence needed. This is especially true for the tech industry where it's already finding fast adoption.”

He further adds, “If the businesses find their productive rhythms through remote work, the question that might arise would be one of reducing office space. Which is already a buzzing topic in global markets. Additionally, business owners need to proactively take steps to engage with mature information and fact dissemination among employees. Take action against false information and help employees get through this tough time.”

  • Godrej Appliances promotes water conservation in new campaign

Godrej Appliances promotes water conservation in new campaign

MUMBAI: Global water crisis is deepening with each passing day. Even a developed city like Cape Town in South Africa is enduring one of the worst water crisis and it may allegedly run out of water next year, if not sooner. Closer to home, Kerala has declared 9 districts as drought hit due to shortage of water. There are 1.2 Billion people or almost 1/5th of the world’s population that live with water scarcity. In India, 330 million people suffer from regular water shortage issues with limited access to clean and safe water.

Taking matters in own hands, Godrej Appliances in India has launched its #MyACSavesWater initiative, which is aimed at sensitising people about this critical issue.

Wondering how an Air conditioner can be a possible source of saving water? Here is the thought behind the initiative – Inside the indoor unit of an AC, there are evaporator coils that cool the warm air blown over it. This causes condensation and moisture forms on the coil, just like how water droplets form on a cold glass of water on a hot day. If run for a period of 8 hours, the air conditioner generates almost 10 Litres of water due to condensation. Generally, this water is taken out of our homes and discarded through drain pipes. However, with approximately 5 million units of air conditioners sold in India each year, that’s potentially 50 million litres of water daily that can be saved and re-used, even without considering the existing installed base of ACs.

Taking this insight and moving a step further towards water conservation, Godrej Appliances, launched its #MyACSavesWater initiative, to educate and encourage people to re-use this distilled water generated from air conditioners. It also provided 1000 customers of its Green Balance range of Air Conditioners, with a unique 10 Litre compact and collapsible water can, to help its customers collect this water and informed them of ways in which the water can be reused like for watering plants, cleaning purposes etc. As per the Indian Standard Code of Basic Requirements for Water Supply, a person uses about 125 Litres of water a day for bathing and cleaning purposes. With 10 Litres of water getting collected from air conditioners and then re-used every day for these purposes, we can save about 8 per cent of daily tap water.

Godrej appliances business head and executive vice president Kamal Nandi says, “Water conservation is a pressing concern in India which needs to be addressed at the earliest. In line with our ‘Soch ke Banaya Hai’ philosophy, the thought behind the #MyACSavesWater initiative is to sensitise people of the depleting water resources and encourage them to conserve water.”

Godrej Appliances marketing head Swati Rathi adds, “We hope that the 1000 cans that we provided to our customers serve as an incentive to take up this drive and inspire many more to follow the example, irrespective of their AC brand. With every AC owner potentially saving 10 Litres water or more daily, we hope this simple soch will usher in a positive change and go a long way in conserving our environment.”

The campaign is being leveraged through social media to reach out to all users of air conditioners, as anyone can help conserve water, irrespective of the brand of air conditioners they use. A video explaining the movement has been shared on our Facebook, Twitter and YouTube social media handles and our website.

A series of posts have also gone up on our social media handles educating the people about the water shortage crisis, the current consumption of tap water and how this simple act of collecting and re-using the water generated from the usage of air conditioners can save millions of litres of water .An emailer and SMS is being sent to all customers, employees and channel partners to take up this initiative and help spread the word.

  • Budget 2014: Hope and growth on marketers’ mind

Budget 2014: Hope and growth on marketers’ mind

MUMBAI: “Ache din aane wale hai” will go down in the history of political campaigns in India as it helped Bharatiya Janta Party win by a landslide.

Narendra Modi with the campaign clearly earned brownie points not only from the common man but also the marketing fraternity. While the new power packed government is gearing up to present its first budget statement, the world of business across is highly confident about the outcome.

There is a list of worries that the government needs to pay attention to. Inflation continues to be high; it is currently over 6 per cent. With monsoon expected to be low this year it will also highly impact the subsidies on food, fuel and fertilizer.

This has been reflecting on marketing spends by different sectors of the economy.

Indiantelevision.com speaks to marketers from across sectors on their expectations from the budget.

‘Hope is new driver of positivity’

Future Group president (customer strategy) and CEO (Bengal warriors & T24) Sandip Tarkas hopes that the budget addresses inflation, job creation and through it attains customer confidence.

He believes that confidence will lead to consumption and thereby heightened economic activity in all spheres.

“This will lead to more jobs, more ad spends, more investments and will impact the M&E industry as well. Consumption builds economy; and increased consumption resulting from increased confidence will start a virtuous cycle of investments as against a vicious cycle of holding on to spends that we are currently caught in,” he says.

Philips India consumer lifestyle president ADA Ratnam is of a similar opinion. “I am expecting the government to come up with a strong and positive budget which will spur the growth. We need the good old GDP growth rate back and I’m confident we will be back on track soon,” he adds.

    ‘Be liberal on tax issues’

Godrej Appliances business head and executive vice president Kamal Nandi has a sincere request from the FM on the direct taxes front. He is expecting an increase in the income tax slab values in line with inflation. According to him, there should be an increase exemption limit for medical expenses (from Rs 15000 to Rs 25000) under 80C.

Along with this, he wishes for an increase tax exemption limit for conveyance allowance limit from Rs 800/month to Rs 1500/month with an increase limit for tax exemption under 80CC from current Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2 lakh. “This will encourage purchase of hi-end and energy efficient appliances, exemption on interest, as applicable in the case of home loans, to be rolled out for consumer loans also,” he opines.

As it is understood that real estate is the second largest sector that contributes to the country’s GDP growth, Tata Housing marketing – head Rajeeb Dash also thinks from the consumer point of view, there should be reduction in home loans and the slab of tax benefits should widen.

“As a real estate brand what we are expecting from the budget is benefits for the end users. We know that the slowdown has hit the common people badly, with the budget announcement the economic momentum should come back in action. From a community point of view infra status is what is needed for the benefit of the developer,” mentions Dash.

    ‘Support the SMEs’

American Swan director and CEO Anurag Rajpal thinks that there is a need to boost the growth of home grown industries to be at par with their counterparts in China and other Asian countries. He is of the opinion that a strong focus on the e-governance initiatives should streamline the procurement process of technology and services with a strong focus on participation from SMEs.

He wants the policy reforms to be such that it is consistent and long-termed. Currently, he believes that homegrown industries are doing business on thin margins due to high rise in cost of raw materials and interest rates. This has been detrimental especially for small-scale industries to sustain their business.

“The country today has abundance of talent but it is limited to very few skill sets. There is a need for change in the education system to further improve the skill sets of the youth which addresses the needs of different verticals. Focus on skills development will be helpful in the long-term in creation of job opportunities,” he concludes.

TVT gives us power to negotiate better: Broadcasters

MUMBAI: The month of July saw the tamasha related to the ratings – TRPs vs TVTs and it was for a fortnight that the whole industry awaited for the three stakeholders to reach a consensus on how viewership numbers will be dished out and what will be the metric for evaluating how television is faring.

Several meetings and exchanges of emails  between the involved parties gave birth to television viewership in thousands, colloquially referred to as TVTs. The format was devised to capture and reflect growth in TV audiences in the country in absolute numbers.

And so from the past three weeks, the industry has been receiving ratings in numbers rather than percentages. Indiantelevision.com spoke to industry professionals to understand the changing scenario and the road ahead.

Though most broadcasters feel that it is still too early to expect any major changes, but the numbers have surely put them in a better position to negotiate.

“It is never too easy to get advertisers on board,” laughs and says Zeel chief sales officer Ashish Sehgal. “Currently, the way transactions are happening people sometimes still tend to refer to both (percentage as well as numbers) as they are habituated to the old ways. But to see the real change happening, we will have to wait for a while – till the whole universe is revamped in January,” he adds.

He further elaborates, “Things like ad cap and ad rate hike are the roadblocks in adaptation of the new currency. However, broadcasters now have higher negotiating power.”

On the same lines, a senior executive from a leading GEC is happy that TVT which is the accepted norm globally for gauging TV viewership has been finally adapted in India. “The new method is a true reflection of how many people are really watching TV and hence, it helps our sales team to utilise the data in a profitable manner while discussing ad rates with the clients.”

The new method has benefitted the niche and regional channels the most which at times received zero per cent TRPs. ETV Marathi and ETV Gujarati business head Anuj Poddar says, “The shift of TAM from GRP to GVT is a healthy thing for everyone and I don’t know why the buyers and advertisers were protesting so much. Now it’s all doodh ka doodh, paani ka paani because it shows absolute numbers. It is very easy to compare across platforms.  You can see the reach of the channels and know the number of homes it reaches. It’s a good starting point where TVT helps all of us get our math right and to also know how and where to spend money.”

However, there is a catch in the consensus achieved which is keeping all the stakeholders happy. For internal evaluation including planning and buying, percentage TVR weekly and all other data is still available to advertisers and advertising agencies as in the past. Hence, for most advertisers it’s business as usual.

Parle general manager (marketing) Praveen Kulkarni says, “For us, it has not made any difference. We still go by the old currency (TRPs). So, there is no change in our media plans.”

Similarly, Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing vice-president (sales & marketing) Kamal Nandi states, “The change has just happened so it is too early to say anything. As of now, we still refer to information in percentages.”

He further elaborates and says that for TVTs to become a reference point will still take some time and it all depends on how fast planners and buyers can cope with the new metric.

Media planners too think that it is too early to talk about benefits of TVTs over TRPs and continue to refer to the old rating method. A south India based media planner explains, “It is too early to say how it will change the way money is exchanged between the two parties. We are trying our best to make sure that both the parties are in a win-win situation.”

On this, the GEC executive goes on to say, “Earlier an advertiser who would pay Rs 100 (and if 100 people were watching a channel) will now have to pay Rs 500 as the reach too would have increased to 500 viewers. And that is the main reason they were and are still opposing it.”

Whatever be the case, one thing which is clear right now is that the broadcasters have engineered change in the way industry views how television programming is being consumed. And that is only phase one of their journey. They still have some road to travel to ensure that TVTs become the currency amongst aadvertisers and agencies.
