  • VCL adds visual effects for Karan Johar’s latest flick

VCL adds visual effects for Karan Johar’s latest flick

MUMBAI: Visual Computing Labs (VCL), a division of Tata Elxsi, provided the Visual Effects (VFX) for Karan Johar’s third directorial venture -Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (KANK)-.starring Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta, Abhishek Bachchan and Kiron Kher in pivotal roles.

The movie was shot over a 90-day stint in the USA and a few on four large sets in Mumbai’s studios.

“This is VCL’s second project for Dharma Productions, having worked with them earlier on Kal Ho Na Ho. In KANK,VCL has executed more than 45 minutes of effects work” said VCL head K.Chandrashekhar.

Says Visual Computing Labs, Tata Elxsi Creative Director Pankaj Khandpur, “The most outstanding work in the multi starrer movie was the creation of a Computer Graphic Image (CGI) football stadium and the neighboring city in the aerial views. It is for the first time in India that the creation of thousands of stadium crowds in all the long-shots was all done in computer graphics!”

“The creation of CGI crowds in the stadium was particularly challenging as we were combining CGI characters in the distance with existing live-action actors in the foreground. Each of the CGI ‘agents’ had to reflect the same level of movement and excitement as the live-action actors, so that both types of ‘actors’ could blend seamlessly in the same shot’s. Even the relative clothing, hair etc. had to be similar! Apart from the blending, the biggest challenge was rendering a crowd of 75,000 people in CG, each in complete 3D, with clothes, caps, shoes, and even tubs of popcorn!” he further added.

All the environment effects like snow and rain for many of the scenes,
including depicting the ‘changing’ of seasons in real time were created in CG by VCL An important requirement was to ensure the seamless integration from one scene to the other; this required the creation of ‘matched’ trees, as well as matching the ‘grounds’ of various shots, and the creation of freshly fallen digital ‘snow’ in the Shahrukh shot. This was challenging considering the individual shots had been shot at different locations, and at different times, weeks apart from each other.

Apart from animation for the movie and the film logo, VCL has designed the opening credits of the film, as well as many minutes of ‘hidden’ effects: cosmetic fixes, embellishment, transitions, and day-for-night effects.

Visual Computing Labs, a division of Tata Elxsi Ltd, is a creative facility offering animation, gaming and special effects for the global entertainment and broadcast industry. Headquartered in Bangalore, Visual Computing Labs is a unique mix of engineering and creative skills, which provides solutions from scripting, pre/post production, character modelling & Animation, VFX and Development services among others.

Viewers will get an exclusive sneak-peak at behind-the-scenes action of this possible blockbuster that has the biggest names as its star cast.

Rajeev Masand, Entertainment Editor, CNN-IBN, will be discussing Shah Rukh’s journey from an unknown face to a face that stands out in the crowd. He paved the path of his career as an actor on the small screen with Fauji and Circus. From the psychopath lover in Darr to the happy go lucky guy next door in Kal Ho Na Ho; Shah Rukh has done it all. His success story sets a benchmark for the youth all over the country.

Get to know more about the King Khan and his new film by the megastar himself in a candid conversation exclusively on CNN-IBN at 9:30 pm this Saturday, August 5 & Sunday, August 6 at 12:30 pm (Replay).

    Excerpts from the Interview:

Rajeev Masand: Now, one of your co-stars in Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna is Amitabh Bachchan, with whom you’ve done three films prior to this one. Of course you’ve heard the story of a cold war between the two of you.

And there’s also a story about you not being part of the Yash Raj banner anymore because of the cold war between you and the Bachchans. What’s your take on that?

Shah Rukh Khan: We hate each other and right now we are planning through assassins to kill each other and I’ve even decided to take on Mr Yash Chopra and destroy all the films and the negatives that he has done.

That is what it is at. And my assassins are all over Mumbai outside Mr Bachchan’s house, attempting to take over his house and his films.

Rajeev Masand: We assume that you are amused by these stories.

Shah Rukh Khan: I was amused earlier, I was never irritated, I was never disturbed. Now, I’m not even amused, I mean it’s an old and boring story. It’s just not there.

I think newspapers and channels should just freshen up some scandalous stories like me having an affair with Abhishek Bachchan would be more interesting

Rajeev Masand: What was the attraction for Don? I mean to star in a film that was part of your childhood? The one that you grew up with?

Shah Rukh Khan: That was absolutely the only reason. It’s a part of my childhood. You can ask anyone walking the streets, anyone who is my age and has grown up on Don. It’s a 27-year-old movie. Ask anyone in CNN-IBN office, wouldn’t they just love the dialogue “Don ko pakadna mushkil hi nahi, namumkin hai (It’s not just difficult to catch the Don, it’s impossible). I won’t say it as well. The film won’t be as great either. It’s no comparison at all, rather, it’s a dream come true. I mean, you start your career with a film called Deewana, where you make an entry in the second half and 16 years later, there you are – saying dialogues mouthed by an actor you saw on screen and wanted to be like. I am Amitabh Bachchan.

  • Filmy to launch Hollywood dubbed movie block; revamps programming

Filmy to launch Hollywood dubbed movie block; revamps programming

MUMBAI: Sahara One Media & Entertainment Ltd’s Hindi movie channel Filmy is entering the second half of its first year with a slew of new initiatives. One key move on the programming front would be the launch of a Hollywood dubbed movie segment.

“We want to explore the Hollywood action movie genre for Filmy. For this, we are planning to have a dubbed movie block. Filmy will be unveiling the segment very soon and we are working on the slots. At present we are in talks with a couple of foreign players for movie acquisition,” says Filmy business head Ashutosh, while not divulging further details.

According to market sources, Sahara is in talks with at least three international studios for acquiring the international titles. The list includes Buena Vista Pictures Distribution, the motion picture and television feature distribution company owned by The Walt Disney Company.

This move will see Filmy joining rival channels Max and Star Gold, which are already into telecasting dubbed versions of popular Hollywood movies. However, Zee Cinema has been distancing itself from the strategy of telecasting Hollywood movies dubbed in Hindi.

As part of the programming revamp, Filmy is also increasing the footage of its wrap-around content, which includes film-based shows and spoofs. The channel’s anchors Rokki, Lal Gulab, Lallan and Ruchi Reporter will now do more shows on the channel during the breaks.

The decision to up the wrap-around programming was taken on the basis of an audience study Filmy conducted after completing three months, according to Filmy marketing and content head Shailesh Kapoor.

“We have received feedback from our viewers, asking us to increase the participation of our anchors in our programming. They want to watch more of the film-based content. Accordingly, We have a new segment ‘Filmy Hot Break’, which will be of the duration of 60 to 90 seconds. Our anchors will be presenting various forms of content, based on the particular movie on air at that time, during these breaks. This segment comes in 21 movies a week, in each time slot of 10 am, 3 pm and 8 pm,” says Kapoor.

The learnings have inspired Filmy to take a re-look at its film news programming as well. Accepting the demand for the latest film news updates, the channel has now started airing 60 second capsules of film news throughout the day, Monday to Friday. In the weekends, the channel continues telecasting its 30 minutes film news programme Aaj Ka Filmy Khabar. “The effort is to break stories and offer our viewers live updates on the happenings in the entertainment industry,” reasons Kapoor.

The Filmy Short Film Festival contest, which is positioned as one of its big ideas of 2006, will start rolling from the third week of August. Filmy will be telecasting the shortlisted entries Monday to Friday and during the weekends, it will air some of the best entries handpicked by the jury head Madhur Bhandarkar. The channel will be announcing the final winner in September.

On the marketing front, Filmy is following the strategy of taking its lead anchors off air and positioning amidst the public. The channel recently associated with Rakesh Roshan for his latest release Krrish and had Lallan performing in the respective theatres. Similarly, Lallan will be doing a Shahrukh act in theatres where Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna would be releasing.
