MUMBAI: MAX, the premium movies and events channel, has notched up an average Television Rating (TVR) of 5.2 for its blockbuster offering, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (K3G). The movie was telecast at 8 pm on Sunday, 29 June 2003.
A press release says that K3G on MAX was viewed by 13.6 million individuals across all India TAM markets, and 12 million in all India minus south TAM markets.
MAX business head and executive vice president Rajat Jain was quoted as saying: “With K3G, MAX achieved an average of 5.2 TVRs among all audiences in C&S homes across all India minus the south TAM markets. This translates into a whopping channel share of 28 per cent which was the highest channel share recorded by any C&S channel during Sunday night prime time.”
Jain also points out: “Also, across all India TAM markets, MAX’s channel share was 21 per cent. And across all India TAM markets, the average TVR was 3.8. Considering that this was a repeat telecast of the film, these ratings are a big achievement and, I daresay, is proof that MAX is becoming the homepage of Hindi movie enthusiasts.”
The release adds that among the markets, the highest ratings came from four crucial markets: Gujarat’s towns and cities with a 0.1 to 1 million population delivered 11.4 TVRs, while Mumbai delivered 8.1; and Gujarat’s one million-plus cities delivered 6.1 TVRs, with Kolkata delivering 6 TVRs.
Jain also pointed out K3G on MAX delivered very encouraging numbers in the south where Hindi movies are perceived to be weaker. “Hyderabad delivered as high as 4.9 TVRs and even Karnataka pegging in with 1.6 and Bangalore with 1.4 TVRs,” adds Jain.
“MAX is already the prime time leader amongst competing Hindi movie channels,” says Jain, adding, “and we continue to innovate, with Mandira’s Extraaa Shots being the latest example.”
Jain expressed confidence that MAX would continue to consolidate its performance and popularity amongst viewers as the preferred channel for Hindi movies and events. He said: “Amongst the current and future offerings on MAX are the ‘Bollywood Ka Shehanshah’ festival of Amitabh Bachchan starrers all the way till August. Starting 21 July, we have a two-week festival of high-voltage films in ‘Action Dhamaka’, which features such gripping films as Vaastav, Nayak, Bichchoo, and the first run of Dev Anand’s Gang, among others.”

Sony bags the telecast rights for ‘Devdas’
MUMBAI: Sony Entertainment Television has acquired telecast rights of the much talked about blockbuster of the year -Devdas.
Sony announced on Saturday that it has acquired the rights for a period of five years to air the ‘most lavish’ feature film ever produced, besides Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage, Yeh Hai Jalwa, Kahin Pyaar Na Ho Jaye, and the recently released Mr & Mrs Iyer.
The sheer magnitude of the movie in terms of the monetary investment and the famous star cast ensured its nomination into the Oscars as the Indian entry this year.
After last year’s Lagaan, this is the second mainstream movie to qualify as India’s entry. Coincidentally Sony had earlier bagged the right to air Lagaan as well.
Both SET India Private Limited Chief Executive Officer Kunal Dasgupta and Cricket, Movies and Events channel of SET- MAX Executive Vice President and Business Head Rajat Jain are exuberant about the acquisitions. “With Lagaan ,K3G,and Devdas, the most expensive Hindi film in the history of Indian cinema and the most successful film of 2002, we have made a clean sweep of the biggest blockbusters in the marketplace”, says Jain. -

SET acquires ‘K3G’, ‘Deewange’, 8 other movies
MUMBAI: For both Sony Entertainment Television (SET) and Zee TV, movies appear to be the safest bet to make some impact on the ratings listings overwhelmingly dominated by Star Plus.
Today SET announced the acquisition of 10 Hindi films with the really big ticket one being producer Yash Johar’s multi-starrer blockbuster Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Other acquisitions include the recently released Akshaye Khanna-Ajay Devgan-Urmila Matondkar starrer Deewangee, Awara Pagal Deewana, Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam, Na Tum Jano Na Hum and Chor Machaye Shor.Multi-starrer K3G has Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan as the male leads with Jaya Bachchan, Kajol and Kareena Kapoor on the distaff side. K3G is planned as the SET’s New Year’s Eve offering to be aired on 31 December.
The film purchases come as no surprise since SET channel head Sunil Lulla had indicated such a move was on the cards after the superb ratings showing of blockbuster Lagaan . Ashustosh Gowarikar’s critically acclaimed box-office success had a full five hours of air time when it was telecast on 17 October but still managed to hit the Top 10.
The announcement comes against the backdrop of reports that both K3G and this year’s mega movie Devdas (at least in costing terms though the verdict on whether it is really a hit is still not fully out) were not finding buyers for the TV telecast rights. The high cost the producers were demanding was the stumbling block. Industry sources say that Rs 80 million was what the Johars were seeking for the film but that SET is likely to have paid somewhere in the region of Rs 60 million.
“Karan Johar is a gifted and sensitive director, and his films have always been extremely popular. So his Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham – along with Deewangee, Awara Pagal Deewana and the other hits we have acquired – will provide our viewers the biggest and best of film entertainment,” SET India CEO Kunal Dasgupta was quoted as saying in an official release.
Johar was quoted in the release as saying: “It’s a relationship that goes back to when Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was aired on Sony. I think our relationship with the Sony Entertainment Television network has grown very beautifully. I’m so happy that Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham has been bought by Sony again – I’m glad it’s Sony and nobody else! I believe in loyalty and consistency, and this is a step in just that direction.”
“This is not all, we are in discussions for some other titles too, and I hope we shall be able to make an announcement soon, Dasgupta has been quoted as saying.
