  • PepsiCo spins the chip this Cricket World Cup 2015

PepsiCo spins the chip this Cricket World Cup 2015

MUMBAI: In a country where cricket is a religion, the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 is the most awaited event. However, the timings are likely to play spoilsport.

With the tournament taking place in Australia and New Zealand, the matches will be aired anywhere between 3:30 am and 12 noon, IST. This means that most fans will be stuck at offices, day jobs and their daily schedules during match time.

To keep the excitement level high and to entice, enthrall and entertain all of India, Lay’s has introduced its new campaign ‘Yeh Game Hi Hai…Taste Ka.’ The campaign captures the frenzy, which grips India when the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 is on and how mismatched timings of the matches this year will create a dilemma for viewers.

PepsiCo India marketing VP Vipul Prakash said, “Cricket has been a great unifying factor and the fever that grips India is unmatched. As the official snack partner of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, Lay’s gets the perfect opportunity to start the year through a scale marketing campaign, ‘Yeh Game Hi Hai…Taste Ka’. This campaign offers a Lay’s spin on the powerful insight of mismatched timings to appeal to consumers. We are enabling consumers to enjoy the game of cricket using the great taste of Lay’s.”

As the official snack of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, the brand is coming to the rescue of bewildered cricket fans across the country.

Conceptualised by JWT and directed by Ravi Udyawar from RU Films, the new ad features Ranbir Kapoor, Pankaj Kapur and Lisa Hayden. The ad is a light hearted and fun take on the distance a cricket fan is willing to go to catch every World Cup match, inspite of the hurdles, the timings, or any difficulties. The track is penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya and composed by Dhruv Ghanekar of Wah Wah Music.

JWT Delhi VP and SCD Sumati Singh said, “The morning telecast timings for the ICC Cricket World Cup this year led us to the idea behind the Lay’s campaign. When a cricket loving nation looks for ways to catch the matches on television, Lay’s, with its irresistible taste, is the answer.”

The campaign will unfold with a 360-degree outreach and engagement plan. In the last few years, consumption of media has changed and on the go viewership has gone up. Hence, the campaign will cut across multiple media vehicles. Taking the insight of mismatched timings Lay’s will have significant presence across digital, retail, radio, print and TV. Innovative consumer activations and engagement activities will enable consumers to win tickets to matches in Australia and LED TVs.

Speaking about the campaign, PepsiCo India snacks category marketing head and director Rajiv Mathrani said, “The campaign will engage consumers across multiple touch points bringing the match closer to consumers.”

Mindshare principal partner Ruchi Mathur added, “As the media consumption is increasingly fragmenting, this campaign will reach consumers across multiple touch points. With seamless integrations and activations across traditional and emerging media, Lay’s will create multiple viewing opportunities and bring the World Cup closer to its consumers.”

  • “Want to be the ‘Influencer Network’ in 2015”: Sunil Lulla

“Want to be the ‘Influencer Network’ in 2015”: Sunil Lulla

With over 30 years of experience, Sunil Lulla brings skills in media, marketing, communication and management.

From spending an early part of his career, which spanned over a period of nine years, in advertising with JWT to rolling out indya.com, in the first wave of the internet; from bringing zing and youthfulness to MTV to help build the television business for The Times Group, Lulla has been a prominent member on many industry boards and forums where he shaped policies and set industry standards and best practices.

His decision to move on from the Times Television Network managing director and CEO to Grey Group India chairman and managing director did come as a shock to many. Nonetheless, the man who engages in a new passion every few years is back to his first passion.

In a freewheel interview with Indiantelevision.com’s Meghna Sharma, Lulla talks about his plans for Grey and much more.

    Excerpts…

Back to advertising. So far, so good?

Very good. The communications business is the best place to stay eternally young (smiles).

If you had to compare, how different has been advertising’s evolution from that of broadcasting industry?

Both bring new challenges and new ideas each day, blended with a frenetic pace and an youthful environment. TV broadcast is focused around the consumer via which it builds relationships with the customer. Advertising is built around the customer via which it creates story telling for the consumer. They are different spectrums. The TV industry faces significantly more regulatory challenges than the communication industry. There is a zameen aasman ka difference in scale and profitability. Advertising brings the edge of ideas unlimited.

It’s been four months, any changes that you have brought in the company? Why?

Grey group is a stable, growing business, producing famous and effective work. I’ve used the time to get to understand the business better. Meeting clients and understanding their challenges and in helping gear Grey group offer integrated solutions and ideas, across advertising, communication, the vast spectrum of digital and social; activation and advocacy. These are via our own Grey group services and those with partners / affiliates, such as RC&M, Penn Schoen Berland and Talent House. Importantly, working closely with the team, which is energetic, talented, innovative and always bubbling with ideas and energy. I believe in the short period of four months, gearing to grow and being able to work across services seamlessly, has been my focus.

Many of our clients are now accessing more than one service from Grey group. For our affiliate partners, we have been able to provide Grey thinking, muscle and experience. What’s visible is perhaps the new campaigns of Swacha Bharat, the Border Security Force and the announcement of Quickr and Reach Mobile as new businesses.

Importantly, in the next few weeks there are many campaigns of Grey group, which continue to define culturally sensitive communication, aimed at changing social behaviour, which is one of the biggest challenges any communication company can deliver on. We believe our clients should be satisfied with our services and offerings but continuously challenge us to deliver outstanding performance. Which is exactly what Grey clients do.

How has the year 2014 been for Grey India?

There has been top line and bottom line growth as per expectations. The new account wins are all based on differentiated communicate on briefs and the focus on adding alliances is preparing Grey group for a strong 2015. Talent has been stable and the awards have been coming in. All in all – a good year for Grey. We are not very boastful about our achievements; our clients hopefully do the talking for us.

One mandate, which you are really proud of, and why?

I cherish my new role at Grey group, via which we are building a differentiated service business to build strong brands for our clients. Each of our clients are precious to us and the work we do, we believe, plays a big role, in making their brands famous and effective.  I do believe the new ‘Swacha Bharat’ campaign enables us to work with the Prime Minister’s vision of changing behaviour which is always a tough task. The communication is simple, mass oriented and evokes the right emotive and attitudinal cord.

How much of the business that you generate out of India is globally aligned?

Some of our global alignments are P&G, GSK, Volvo, amongst others. 65 per cent of our business is India alone business.

Competition is growing multifold, so how would you differentiate Grey from the others?

We believe Grey group’s thinking and capability is being rapidly geared to offer integrated solutions around advertising, social, mobile, web, activation, advocacy, rural and crowdsourcing. With many more to be included. Powered by our vision to create Famous and Effective solutions, work and brands, Grey group is becoming a highly differentiated ‘Influencer Network’. We say Grey groups role to influence consumer choice and thinking and via its array of skills it is designed to be ‘an influencer network of choice, creating famous and effective work’. Each way of approaching the consumer needs to be true to the host medium but interconnected to the behaviour we need to change. Grey enjoys a very strong reputation because of its Planning, Creative, Digital and Communication Skills and this is poised to grow with strength.

According to you, has Grey really been ‘Famously Effective’?

Absolutely – the wins at Cannes and Effies are a great testimony. The growth of each of our clients business is evidence of the work – working!

What are the plans lined up for the digital side of your business?

Growth is the obvious agenda. Growing and strengthening resources in the Delhi and Bangalore NCR are on the agenda for 2015. Focusing on having more of our clients across our range of services avail of our Award winning Digital solutions. Continuing to create cutting edge and new solutions is the everyday task. Focusing on learning and training for our talent is the key.

How do you see an increase in media fragmentation impacting creative agencies?

Agencies should stop worrying about definitions. We do not see ourselves as a creative-alone agency. Grey’s role is to influence consumers and we believe that requires each of us to continuously grow skills and expertise, which is our focus. Agencies can easily learn, adapt and innovate to tell stories be it on a one to one basis or one to many basis. If there is no structured integration, then one must bring it in any way into the service, as businesses will not grow in a linear fashion.

With an increase in penetration of smartphones and tablets, the biggest challenge will be on how to most optimally use the mobile phone for building a brand. What advise will you give the brands and digital agencies?

We reserve recommendations like these, exclusively for our clients (Smiles)

Do you think Indian advertising has been able to shift paradigms with changing times?

The glass is always half full, which makes it encouraging for the industry to keep pouring skills, ideas, talent and investment in creating culturally cutting edge work. The new Swach Bharat campaign defines that. On an overview, the Indian industry has successfully paved the way for new paradigms.

What is at top of your wish list for Grey India for 2015?

Be the Influencer Network which successfully enables Famous and Effective Brands and Communications.

Sumeer Mathur joins DDB Mudra North

MUMBAI: DDB Mudra Group has announced the appointment of Sumeer Mathur as DDB Mudra North strategic planning senior VP and head.

Based out of DDB Mudra North’s Gurgaon office, Mathur will work closely with national strategic planning head Aditya Kanthy, to lead planning and brand management for the agency.

Before joining DDB Mudra North, Sumeer was associated with JWT (Delhi). During his tenure at JWT, he led award winning campaigns for Airtel Money and Microsoft. Apart from JWT, he has also worked with Rediffusion Y&R, Lowe Mumbai, Contract and SSC&B Lintas.

On joining DDB Mudra North, Mathur said, “I am quite excited by the opportunity DDB Mudra North offers. While many agencies talk about the change in communication landscape, DDB Mudra Group seems to be the only one that has multiple disciplines working together to build brands under one roof. Too often the area of influence of the planner remains constricted to cracking an insight that turns into a TV campaign. I was also drawn to the culture of the agency which came through during my interactions with Madhukar, Aditya and Vandana.”

Mathur brings to the agency an experience of over 15 years in communications across brands while being based in Mumbai and Delhi. He has worked with leading brands, across categories ranging from automobiles (Hyundai & Tata motors) FMCG (GSK, Unilever, Colgate Palmolive and Unicharm), household appliances and home electronics (LG and Microsoft), social health (USAID), airlines (Kingfisher airlines, Spice Jet) and hospitality (Taj Hotels & Resorts). He has also undertaken regional and global responsibilities for Unilever Brands (Fair & lovely, Lifebuoy shampoo, Clinic all Clear) for the South East Asian markets.

Kanthy said, “We’re thrilled to have Sumeer on board. He’s an incredible talent. Vandana, Sambit and Sumeer make a formidable team in Delhi. He’s excited about working with all the DDB Mudra Group agencies under one roof and leading our bright young team to create influence and apply creative thinking for business growth. We’ve got a lot to do to be the best agency in the city and he’s up for it.”

Added DDB Mudra North president Vandana Das,I’m so excited to have Sameer as part of the DDB Mudra group in Delhi. Sumeer is a dynamic leader & brings with him experience & maturity that is required to strengthen existing brands while ensuring that we are on a growth drive. I believe that he is a great asset & we can use his skills and talents in making our agency reach new heights.”

  • Focus Group changes channel packaging for more focus

Focus Group changes channel packaging for more focus

MUMBAI: Gearing up for a full fledged launch very soon, upcoming Hindi news channel Focus News has undergone a makeover. Dropping its earlier logo and colour combination, the channel has revamped with fresh colours of red and white.

Ideated by JWT and executed by Clayground, the same logo format will be adopted for its other regional channels namely Focus Haryana, Focus Bangla, Focus Odisha, Focus NE and Focus Hi Fi, in the next two weeks. The on air look has also been changed, which has been done by an in house team.

The new logo has the map of the world fitted inside the ‘o’. Speaking on the change, Focus Group CEO Neeraj Sanan says, “Red and white are the colours of news channels. We wanted a unique dimension with an interesting shade.”

While the regional channels have been fully distributed, the national channel is currently available only on Videocon d2h, Tata Sky and from 1 November on DD Freedish. The group is awaiting its last leg of clearance from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting for its satellite transfer request.

Focus News is currently situated on Measat which makes it cumbersome while dealing with cable operators as it has to give a dish and IRD box for every operator. It is looking at shifting to Intelsat.

Once the new satellite is confirmed, it will be available on cable platforms as well. Post getting its distribution fixed, the channel will embark on a marketing plan in the Hindi speaking markets. Sanan is aware that the channel so far has kept itself low on distribution with only a limited presence on the DTH platforms. Therefore the logo change will be noticed by most.

“We are creating a brand for the future,” he concludes.

  • Roohafza gets innovative on billboards

    Roohafza gets innovative on billboards

MUMBAI: Over the last two months, Roohafza has spread its communication across several multimedia platforms.

Roohafza’s advertising campaign idea for 2014, centred on ‘Be Natural Be Cool’ has been stepped up on the outdoor medium and is targeted towards youngsters of SEC AA, A and B. The task behind the campaign was to bring alive the over 100 years old iconic brand and speak to the new age audience. Kinetic India is the agency that has executed the outdoor campaign.

The campaign brief given to Kinetic was to ensure that the innovativeoutdoor display should serve the brand objective of addressing the natural lineage of the product head-on. Also the campaign is aimed to support and amplify outdoor to TV and print.

Hamdard India brand manager Puneet Kapoor further elaborated, “People perceive Roohafza as a rose based syrup. What’s less known is that Roohafza is a unique blend of 15 herbal ingredients and fruit juices. The campaign aims to build on the natural goodness of the product and at the same time refresh our connect with the younger generation with the message of ‘Be Natural Be Cool’.”

The two month outdoor campaign has rolled out in Mumbai, New Delhi, Aurangabad, Kanpur, Lucknow, Agra, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Chandigarh, Panchkula, Mohali, Ambala, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Ajmer, Indore and Bhopal and ends in mid July.

The main areas covered in this outdoor campaign are key junctions and main arterial routes of the tar. The inventories used in traditional media are billboards, unipole, bus shelters and metro panels with innovation. The innovation is done by keeping in mind a Roohafza bottle of which half indicates different ingredients of the drink and the other half show syrup inside the bottle.

Other than this, the bottle is depicted to be tilted and is being poured in the glass with a cut out of a glass and a base of a lot of ice indicating its best had cold to feel refreshed.

“Our challenge was to bring the wow factor in the outdoor innovation and highlight the unique ingredients of Roohafza. We came up with a solution where we used a larger than life 3D bottle of Roohafza on the outdoor media highlighting the unique mixture of ingredients that goes in making Roohafza,” said Kinetic India vice president and business head Raj Mohanty.
