    Azhar disappoints, Baaghi and Jungle Book going strong

    Azhar, the major release of the week, much touted to be a controversial saga of a great cricketer fallen on bad days, found indifferent response from the viewers. Memories are short, and with nothing positive to remind one of Azhar in the era of Kohli, Raina, Rohit , etc and, there was no inclination to make an aggrieved hero out of an alleged suspect.

    The film opened to a mediocre response on Friday, remained stagnant even on Saturday and did little on Sunday to show positive signs. The film had an opening weekend of Rs 20.6 crore. The drop from today onwards is inevitable looking at lack of appreciation.

    Dear Dad, a father son story, about a father wanting his on the verge of teens to accept his gay status, has failed to find its audience. Kids can’t see the film, elders would not want to watch it and that left little else. The film faced no audience, no show status at many cinemas.

    Buddha In A Traffic Jam released after last minute hassles went generally unnoticed. The theme of the film has no relevance in the scheme of things when it comes to cinema.

    Traffic, a film about a celebrity father buying a heart for transplant into his ailing daughter, is not accepted by Hindi audiences despite its success in the original Malayalam and other versions. More than a humane tale, it emerged as the depiction of money, might and clout. The film failed to touch the chord and collected barely Rs 3.2 crore in its first week.

    1920 London is the only film from the films released last week which made a mark, though to a limited extent. This horror drama with the credibility of Sharman Joshi riding on it, did decent business at the box office and collected Rs 12.1 crore.

    Sunny Leone and her sex appeal are at a stage of negative returns. One Night Stand, despite a suggestive title and Sunny Leone in the lead, failed to arouse curiosity. The film remained poor in its first week managing to garner together a bare Rs 3.15 crore.

    Baaghi was excellent in its second week as this mass appeal film went on to collect Rs 11.8 crore in its second week taking its two week total to Rs 71.4 crore.

    Jungle Book collected Rs 6.25 crore in its fifth week with its five week being Rs 175.15 crore.

At ticket rates priced at hundreds and no entertainment, it failed to get the audience. The film had opening day way short of the Rs crore figure and ended up collecting Rs 2.1 crore for its first weekend.

    As for, One Night Stand, how long can one sell a revealing Sunny Leone’s sex appeal and a fetching title? The film fared the worst of the three releases. It collected Rs 2 crore for its opening weekend..

    Baaghi reaped the benefits of poor opposition in its second weekend. There has not been a mass entertainer in the last few months. The film, after a lucrative first weekend of Rs 38.7 crore, followed up with a reasonably good business in the following days to complete its first week with Rs 59.6 crore.

    Short Cut Safari remained very poor.

    Nil Battey Sannata just about managed to touch the Rs crore mark in its first week.

    Santa Banta Pvt Ltd added Rs 1.5 lakh in its second week, having Rs 71.5 lakh to show for its two week run.

    Fan has fallen badly. The film collected Rs 1.2 crore in its third week to take its three week total to Rs 83.8 crore.

    Jungle Book maintained its hold at the box office with amazing figures even in its fourth week. The film collected Rs 17.4 crore taking its four week total to Rs 168.9 crore.

    Ki & Ka added Rs 20 lakh in its fifth week to take its five week total to Rs 51.35 crore.

    MUMBAI: Baaghi, a romance- action film and only the second film for Tiger Shroff, has with an opening response, exceeding all expectations. The film went on to cross the Rs 12 crore mark on its opening, on Friday. For a change, many single screens displayed House Full boards. The film held on very well on Saturday and excelled on Sunday to end its opening weekend with an impressive tally of Rs 38.7 crore.

    Short Cut Safari, a film aimed at children remained poor. It was too amateurish even for kids.

    Nil Battey Sannata could not cash in on its tax exemption in Delhi and UP and managed to put together only Rs 2.75 crore in its first week.

    Laal Rang, despite rising familiarity of the moviegoer with Randeep Hooda, failed to draw viewers. The film could manage just about Rs 1.7 crore in its first week.

    Santa Banta Pvt Ltd, a pathetic attempt at comedy, fared very poor. The film collected Rs 70 lakh in its first week.

    Fan dropped drastically in its second week collecting just Rs 11.1 crore. The theme and the pace of the film did not quite go down well with the audience. The two week total for the film is Rs 82.6 crore.

    Jungle Book continued with its triumphant march. The film collected an impressive Rs 30.7 crore from all versions in its third week to take its tally to Rs 151.5 crore.

    Ki & Ka added Rs 50 lakh in its fourth week to take its four week tally to Rs 51.15 crore.

This comes soon after the setback as they were made to pay high MGs and advances for Fan which they could not recoup. The three small time films released this week, Laal Rang, Nil Battey Sannata and Santa Banta Pvt Ltd have been rejected outright with their collections limited to a few lakhs each day of their opening weekend. Sadly for the exhibitors, they have nothing to curtail the shows of these films, as is done usually, with other films such as Jungle Book has. Fan is in its third week and limited footfalls, would have no takers anymore, since its collections went only downhill from the fourth day onwards.

    Nil Battey Sannata had a title that went over one’s head, these titles fail to tell a prospective viewer what is in the offing. The film has merit and was also exempted from paying entertainment tax in Delhi and UP state. If other states also grant it exemption, as it deserves to, it will be too late to help the film. The film could not put together even Rs one crore for its opening weekend.

    The makers may, however, take solace from the fact that, having been shot entirely in UP, this low budget film’s investment would be assured from the subsidy scheme of the UP government.

    Laal Rang drew a few hundred more footfalls over others due to Randeep Hooda in the lead, yet remained in the  Rs one crore range over the weekend. Hooda does not yet enjoy the status to assure a multi crore opener.

    Santa Banta Pvt Ltd may well be the frontrunner for the status of the year’s worst, amateurish and juvenile film. To add to its problems, the film was withdrawn from many cinema halls due to the Sikh community protesting against defamatory and derogatory projection of the community.

    The Jungle Book continued to do roaring business. The film has added an impressive Rs 46.8 core in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 120.8 crore. The trend for the third week is steady.

    Fan, which had a reasonable opening on day one, it being a national holiday, started dropping from day two and three, failing to add the weekend audience. However, the drop from Monday onwards for rest of the four days was rather steep. The film could add about 30 per cent for the next four days to its three day opening weekend collections to end its first week with Rs 71.5 crore with the second weekend adding another Rs 7.75 crore.

    KI & Ka added Rs 1.45 crore. The film’s three week tally stands at Rs 50.65 crore.
    Kapoor & Sons collected Rs 20 lakh in its fifth week, taking its five week total to Rs 72.1 crore.

    MUMBAI: Fan had a reasonable opening though the viewers’ reports were not going in its favour. The public holiday on the occasion of Ram Navami on Friday and enhanced admission rates by as much as 20 to 25 per cent at many cinemas helped the film to put together Rs 19.2 crore on the first day.

    The word of mouth being mixed, the collections showed a drop to the tune of nearly Rs 4 crore. On Sunday, the film did as little compared to Saturday to end its opening weekend with a total of Rs 52.35 crore. However, after bringing down the admission rates to normal from today, the film has been showing noticeable decline in footfalls.

    Love Games failed to attract the audience with skin show as its main attraction. With poor face value and a rundown story, it falls further after a low opening weekend managing to add less than Rs 1 crore over its next four days of the week to show just Rs 3.9 crore for its first week.

    Club Dancer fared miserably to make its first week also its last. 

    Jungle Book, with its combined versions, has done better than the lifetime box office of many takings of many midrange Hindi films. The film has been lapped up by all strata of audience and also drawing repeat audience. After an impressive weekend, Jungle Book remained rock steady through its first week to collect about Rs 74 crore. It is expected to continue its good run in the second week as well.
