Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla team up with Anubhav Sinha for a campaign

NEW DELHI: ‘Believe‘, a campaign that celebrates the triumph of women over their struggles, has been announced by renowned film personalities Madhuri Dixit, Juhi Chawla and Anubhav Sinha.

An endeavour by Benaras Mediaworks in association with ‘Gulaab Gang‘, the campaign will bring forth stories of valor from across the country and talk about unheard stories and unsung heroines.

With the hope to inspire the nation, and carry forward acts of courage in everyday life, ‘Believe‘ will invite entries of women across the country who have battled all odds and emerged victorious. The entries will be analysed by a panel of eminent personalities from all walks of life, who will select 20 stories of inspiration that the Nation must hear of. These inspiring stories will be adapted into short films.

Sinha said, "We have worshipped women as goddesses in this country for time immemorial. Yet strangely enough, we have miles to go when it comes to treating them as equals. Women continue to be oppressed, marginalised, and violated every single day. However despite adverse climes that women in this nation are subject to, we see shining examples of some who have blazed the trail and against all odds have emerged victorious to show us that the term ‘weaker sex‘ is an absolute mistake. Through this campaign we hope to inspire women fighting for their freedom from social injustice or stigma."

Dixit said, "It goes without saying that the environment and times we live in are sad and hostile. Especially for us women, and yet there are these stories of rising above the odds which the nation must know of. As a creative artiste my job has been to inspire audiences with art and films I am part of. And the ‘Believe‘ campaign allows me to present before you stories that are inspiring for us all. I look forward to saluting the unknown heroines of the country."

Chawla said "Believe ties in beautifully with the theme of the film, in life too women managing homes, families and careers face challenges and discrimination every day. It‘s always inspiring and uplifting to know a real story of real women who have overcome hardships, extreme hardships and come out as winners"

Benaras Mediaworks in association with ‘Gulaab Gang‘ directed by Soumik Sen are convinced about making a difference to women by giving a platform to women to narrate their stories. The team looks forward to educating and enlightens women about their rights to freedom and living life to its fullest.

  • Govt to convene meeting in Feb to study problems of indie filmmakers

Govt to convene meeting in Feb to study problems of indie filmmakers

NEW DELHI: Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari has decided to call a meeting of independent filmmakers in February to discuss various issues being faced by them including lack of finance and high ticket prices.

Tewari gave this assurance to a delegation of independent filmmakers which met him late last week. He asked the filmmakers to list out their grievances in detail.

The delegation was represented by Onir, Anusha Rizvi and Shonali Bose who met him with a “Save Indie Cinema” petition jointly filled by 45 award winning film makers and signed by close to 18,000 people.

The petition speaks about the threats that New Wave independent filmmakers in the country face. One of the concerns is non availability of resources to exhibit their films. “High ticket pricing that is inappropriate for small budget films, inadequate number of shows and odd show timings further destroy the possibility of regional and Hindi cinema to have any proper chance at being viewed. It defies logic that a Rs 1.5 billion film and a Rs 150 million film are priced by the multiplexes in the same manner,” the petition says.

“We the petitioners hope that the Information and Broadcasting Ministry will take due notice of our petition and help independent film professionals and independent cinema to tell stories that would otherwise be neglected and would make us a poorer society for that,” said Anush Rizvi.

Oscar Award and National Award winning Sound Engineer Resul Pookutty; National Award winning film makers Anant Mahadevan, Aparna Sen, Ashim Ahluwalia, Buddhadev Das Gupta, Girish Kasaravalli, Rituparno Ghosh, actor and producer Nandita Das, Juhi Chawla and Sanjay Suri are some of the petitioners.

Ashim Ahluwalia asserts that the biggest struggle for Indian independent film makers is in India itself. “It’s not the audience that prevents films from being seen but distributors, theater owners and TV channels, that only operate from the most simplistic belief: that cinema is a product and can be nothing else,” he says.

  • Onir displeased with DD for refusing to telecast I Am

Onir displeased with DD for refusing to telecast I Am

MUMBAI: Filmmaker Onir is upset that his national award-winning movie I Am has been refused a screening on Doordarshan.

“Despite having cut seven minutes of the film and all abuses, we are refused whereas the same TV shows other much more adult stuff. I am dismayed at the double standards of the Censor board. While it‘s ok to show Satyamev Jayate on DD prime time, telecasting of my film is refused,” Onir tweeted.

The film is divided into four stories dealing with issues like homosexuality, child abuse, Kashmir problem and sperm donation.

Trade analysts are of the view that I Am has been given a U/A certificate while it is necessary to be ‘U‘ certified for it to be telecast on DD. “Anyway it‘s a joke that Doordarshan needs a ‘U‘ certificate while all the other satellite channels are allowed U/A,” he said.

Incidentally, I Am won the National Award for best Hindi film and best lyrics this year.

The film, starring Rahul Bose, Manisha Koirala, Juhi Chawla and Sanjay Suri, has already been screened at various national and international film festivals.
