    3D helps Warner Bros cross $1 bn in overseas markets

    MUMBAI: Setting a new studio record and marking the 12th straight year, Warner Bros. has surpassed $1 billion at the overseas box office in less than five months, the biggest contributor being Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, that amassed $257 million of its $357 million overseas haul in 2012.

    Also passing the $200 million mark this year were films like Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and Wrath of the Titans. The studio has made over $1 billion internationally 15 times, crossing the $2 billion mark four times.

    “Our success thus far this year would not be possible without the ingenuity of our filmmakers, and the hard work and dedication of our teams around the world,” said Warner Bros., president of international distribution Veronika Kwan Vanderberg. “These remarkable results demonstrate the continued strength of the international business, particularly in rapidly expanding overseas markets and in 3D.”

    The studios’ 3D revenues have go far garnered $324 million, a third of the overall sum.

    In its release, Warner Bros. has also claimed that its international division has been the market leader six times in the last 11 years.

    MUMBAI: With no strong competition, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island held on to the top box office spot grossing $14.7 million from 6,600 screens in 52 territories.

    The family adventure co-starring Josh Hutcherson and Dwayne Johnson opened at No. 4 in Germany by roping in $1.7 million from 438 screens. Till now, Journey 2’s total foreign box office stands at $184.5 million, that is 29 per cent more than the overseas tally compiled by Journey To The Center Of The Earth.

    Universal’s 3D animation title, Dr. Seuss’The Lorax, that opened No. 1 domestically, tested international waters on the weekend by way of 43 Middle Eastern dates, grossed $500,000. The distributor plans a big overseas push late this month for Easter holidays. More than 60 territories will play the adaptation of the children’s classic over the next five months.
     
    Opening in eight markets, Twentieth Century Fox’s romantic comedy This Means War drew in $14.1 million in the weekend playing at 3,962 screens in 51 markets and grossing an overseas gross total to $43.2 million.

    Making its debut in five markets, Universal’s Safe House hoisted its foreign gross total to $51.6 million thanks to $10.8 million weekend at 3.500 situations in 50 territories.

    Fourth was DreamWorks/Disney’s young-man-and-horse drama, War Horse, that made $10.6 million in the weekend playing in 52 territories. The total foreign gross total of the film now stands at $79.1 million.

    No 5 was Director Martin Scorsese’s Hugo that grossed $9.6 million in the weekend at 2,091 venues in 34 territories.

    MUMBAI: Devoid of any serious competition, Warner Bros.’ Journey 2: The Mysterious Island maintained its No. 1 box office position for the third consecutive weekend by collecting $18.5 million from 8,500 screens in 48 offshore territories.

    A No. 1 opening in Italy, the film contributed $2.4 million from 418 screens and edged out French comedy blockbuster Intouchables that also made its debut in the market. The New Line/Walden Media family adventure has till yet grossed $159.2 million, $16.2 million more than foreign gross of the film’s 2008 predecessor Journey To The Center of the Earth.
     
    Foreign grosses for best-picture nominees at the Oscar like The Artist ($48 million versus $29 million domestic); The Help ($42 million versus $169.7 million domestic); The Tree of Life ($49 million versus $13.3 million domestic); Midnight in Paris ($98 million versus $56.5 million domestic); War Horse ($62.7 million versus $79 million domestic); Hugo ($46 million of which Paramount-handled markets account for $39.9 million, versus $69.4 million domestic); Moneyball ($34 million versus $75.6 million domestic); The Descendants ($77.7 million versus $79 million domestic); and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close ($8.5 million versus $31.2 million domestic).

    No.2 on the weekend was Safe House, Universal’s thriller starring Denzel Washington, opened in 11 territories and roped in $13.6 million on the weekend overall from 3,389 sites in 46 markets. Standing out was the film’s No. 3 bow in the U.K., which drew $3.6 million from 425 locations. Openings in Italy, Korea, Mexico, Panama and Indonesia are on tap this week.

    MUMBAI: Warner Bros Pictures is set to release their new film, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, on 3 February.

    The sequel to the first digital 3D film Journey to the Center of the Earth released in 2008, begins when seventeen-year-old Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) receives a coded distress signal from a mysterious island where no island should exist.

    Unable to stop him from tracking the signal to its source, Sean’s new stepfather, Hank (The Rock – Dwayne Johnson), joins the quest that will take them first to the South Pacific and then to a place few people have ever seen – or lived to tell about. It’s a place of stunning beauty, strange and threatening life forms, volcanoes, mountains of gold and more than one astonishing secret.

    Together with Gabato (Luis Guzmán), the only helicopter pilot willing to risk the trip, and Gabato’s beautiful, strong-willed daughter Kailani (Vanessa Hudgens), they set out to find the island, rescue its lone human inhabitant and escape before seismic shockwaves force the island underwater and bury its treasures forever.

    The film also stars Michael Caine as Sean’s grandfather Alexander, the stranded traveler they’re seeking, and Kristin Davis as Sean’s mother, Liz.

    Shot in 3D, the film has been directed by Brad Peyton. The Film will be released in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu across India. It will also be released in IMAX theatres worldwide.

    Warner Bros India unveils 2012 line-up

    MUMBAI: This is the time when production houses declare their line-up of releases for the coming year.

    Following that of Sony Picture, Warner Bros Pictures India has announced its movie-line of 2012.

    The production house will release 15 films next year. It will start with the release of J Edgar on 20 January and will follow it up with Journey2: The Mysterious Island in 3D on 3 February, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close on 17 February.

    The releases of the next two months will begin with Wrath Of The Titans in 3D that will release on 30 March to be followed by The Lucky One that will take a bow in cinema houses on 20 April.

    Release in the month of May and June include Dark Shadows on 11 May, Rock of Ages on 1 June and Jack The Giant Killer on 15 June. While The Dark Knight Rises releases on 20 July, 24 August will see the release of Rivals.

    September will have two releases, Appartition and Argo on 7 and 14 September respectively, the month of October and November will have one release each month. Gangster Squad will release on 19 October and Gravity (3D) on 23 November.

    The last month December, that rounds up the year‘s slate has two releases. While The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (3D) will release on 14 December, The Great Gatsby (3D) will release on Christmas Day 25 December.
    The last release of Warner Bros this year will be Sherlock Holmes 2 that will release on December 30.
