    Universal Pictures to release ‘Everest’ across India in September

    MUMBAI: Universal Pictures is all set to release the epic adventure Everest across India this September.

     

    This movie showcases the spine-chilling journey of a group of mountaineers who embark on a journey to reach the summit of the world’s highest mountain, Everest.

     

    It is based on the real life incidents that took place in the 1996 Mount Everest disaster and stars Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Robin Wright, Michael Kelly, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley, Emily Watson and Jake Gyllenhaal. Everest has been directed by Baltasar Kormákur.

     

    Inspired by the incredible events surrounding an attempt to reach Mount Everest, the movie documents the awe-inspiring journey of two different expeditions challenged beyond their limits by one of the fiercest snowstorms ever encountered by mankind. Their mettle tested by the harshest elements found on the planet, the climbers will face nearly impossible obstacles as a lifelong obsession becomes a breathtaking struggle for survival.   

     

    Shot across the locales of Nepal, Rome and UK, Everest will focus on the challenges faced by two groups, the one that was led by Scott Fischer (played by Gyllenhaal), and the one led by Rob Hall (played by Clarke).

     

    The movie has been co-written by William Nicholson and Simon Beaufoy.

    MUMBAI: Golden Globe Award winning actor Robin Wright (House of Cards) and Sam Worthington (Clash of the Titans) join Everest, Deadline reports. Everest is an upcoming film based on the 1996 Mount Everest Disaster, when eight people were caught in a blizzard and died on Mount Everest during summit attempts. In the entire season, fifteen people died trying to reach the summit, making it the deadliest single year in Mount Everest’s history.

     

    Academy Award winning actor Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain) and Academy Award nominee Josh Brolin (Milk) have also been cast in the disaster epic. Joining them are actors Jason Clarke (The Great Gatsby) and Academy Award nominee John Hawkes (Winter’s Bone). Wright will play the wife is Brolin’s character, a doctor who braves the elements over an arduous night. Worthington is set to play the role of a scaling expert from New Zealand.

     

    Everest is being directed by Academy Award nominee Baltasar Kormákur (The Deep). The film is currently being shot on location in Nepal and will soon also shoot in the Italian Dolomites and at Cinecitta Studious in Rome and Pinewood Studios in the UK, according the Hollywood Reporter.

    MUMBAI: The movie about a tragic attempt to climb Mount Everest is in closing negotiations with Josh Borlin, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jason Clark and John Hawkes. Based on a true story, Universal is talking to Emmet/Furla to co-finance the film and distribute Everest in North America.

    Baltasar Kormakur will be directing the movie. The plot is about two expedition groups who are climbing Mount Everest but are hit by a massive storm, leaving eight people in the two groups dead. The movie is most likely to be shot in Iceland which is also Kormakur‘s homeland.

    Jason Clarke, from Zero Dark Thirty, and Jake Gyllenhaal, from End of Watch, will be playing the roles of the two group leaders.

    Men In Black dislodges The Avengers as no.1

    MUMBAI: Upon release, Men In Black 3, took over the reigns of the foreign box office grossing $132 million opening at 22,435 venues in 103 territories. Thus it dislodged The Avengers as the No. 1 film overseas.

    Co-starring Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin, the film premiered at No. 1 in 101 markets with China leading the list with $20.6 million drawn from 6,073 screens while Russia came in second with an intake of $18.8 million from 1,547 sites.

    According to Sony, MIB 3 grossed more than $52.2 million in Asia. Japan ($7.98 million at 980 venues) and South Korea ($8.53 million at 950 spots). In the UK, the film‘s intake was $4.96 million from 1,242 locations while in France, the film roped in $5.64 million from 889 situations.

    IMAX screens playing MIB 3 drew $6.1 million from 195 screens through Monday, said IMAX senior vp worldwide distribution, Phil Groves. IMAX‘s international box-office total is expected to be $7 million.

    ‘The Amazing Spiderman’ and Bond film ‘Skyfall’ to release in India ahead of US

    NEW DELHI: In a rare move, Sony Pictures India is releasing the much-awaited 3D ‘The Amazing Spiderman’ in India on 29 June, almost a week before its American and global release on 3 July.

    The film will be released in India in English and three dubbed language versions: Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. A total of over 1000 prints will be released in India alone.

    The film stars India’s Irrfan along with Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, and Rhys Ifans.

    Meanwhile, well-known films like ‘Men in Black3’ in 3D with the original pairing of Will Smith-Tommy Lee Jones and addition of Josh Brolin is set for release on 25 May.

    A remake of the 1991 blockbuster Total Recall with Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel is slated for release on 3 August.

    Later in the year will see releases like the Adam Sandler comedy That’s My Boy, high octane action film Premium Rush starring Joseph Gordon Levitt, claymation comedy The Pirates! Band of Misfits starring Hugh Grant, followed by the return of another big franchise with Resident Evil: Retribution (3D, worldwide 14 September), Here Comes the Boom starring Kevin James and Salma Hayek; and 3D animated film Hotel Transylvania starring Adam Sandler and teen star Selena Gomez, from cult animation director Genndy Tartakovsky known for such Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, The Powerpuff Girls.

    The year ends with the 23 film in the Bond franchise titled Skyfall (releasing one week before the United States on 2 November) and Sparkle, starring Jordin Sparks and featuring the last film appearance of the late great Whitney Houston. 2013 is another cracker year with Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained starring Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio, sci-fi drama Elysium starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, Captain Philips starring Tom Hanks, After Earth starring the father-son pairing of Jaden and Will Smith and follow-ups of superhit films The Smurfs 2 and Grown Ups 2.

    “After completing 75 years as a studio in India, 31 of which I have personally been part of, I can say without a doubt that this is our biggest and most exciting line-up ever with tried and tested record-breaking performance at the Indian box office,” said Sony Pictures India MD Kercy Daruwala. “On the whole, we have an ideal mix of the biggest blockbuster action movies as well as comedy, drama and family films with an arsenal of great directors and top rung stars.”

    MUMBAI: 51-year-old Sean Penn recently hosted a benefit for the J/P Haitian Relief Organization. The event, called Cinema for Peace, was on the occasion of the second anniversary of the earthquake in Haiti.
     
    Subtitled Help Haiti Home with Sean Penn & Friends, the event was supported by Penn‘s friends that include Bryan Lourd, a partner at CAA; Jeff Robinov, the president of Warner Bros. Pictures Group; Oprah Winfrey, Bill Clinton and film stars like Demi Moore, Leonardo DiCaprio, George Clooney, Josh Brolin and Diane Lane, James Gandolfini, Hilary Swank, Orlando Bloom, Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts.
     
    Ms. Roberts said that Mr. Penn wrote her a “very long, eloquent letter” inviting her to participate in the evening. “At the end of the letter, he wrote, ‘So, wouldya?‘ How could I say no? You can‘t say no. And this is nothing compared to what Sean does for all these people.”
     
    In one of the more reported moments of the evening, Penn was named an Ambassador-at-Large to the country.
