Jonty Rhodes dives into startup TV arena

MUMBAI: From diving for catches to diving into deals, Jonty Rhodes is set to make a different kind of pitch, this time, on Indian television. The legendary South African cricketer and global sports icon will appear on Ideabaaz, India’s first media-integrated startup reality show, airing November 8 at 6:30 pm and 11 pm on Zee TV and Zee5.

In a never-before-seen avatar, Rhodes joins UpUrFit co-founders Munish Vig and Vikram Gunjal to pitch their sports wellness brand to the Titans, Ideabaaz’s panel of investors. The show, conceptualised by Jeet Wagh and Sagoon Wagh, is designed to democratise startup funding by bringing entrepreneurs from across India, especially from tier II and III cities, face-to-face with investors, all within a high-energy television format.

UpUrFit, co-founded in 2023, is fast carving out its space in India’s USD 40 billion sports wellness market. With a focus on performance, recovery, and hygiene products made from clean, effective ingredients, the brand is backed by Rhodes himself. Currently, it is raising a USD 0.5 million funding round, already 50 per cent subscribed, with participation from the IIM Calcutta syndicate and other major investors. As of October, the brand boasts an ARR of Rs 40 million and a 50 per cent QoQ growth rate.

Sharing his excitement, Rhodes said, “Pitching on Ideabaaz was a whole new ballgame for me. Usually, I’m diving for catches, not catching investors’ attention. It was exciting to share UpUrFit’s vision on a platform that celebrates innovation and passion. As an athlete and entrepreneur, I’ve always believed in fitness that’s real and relatable, and that’s exactly what UpUrFit stands for.”

Of course, the ever-energetic Rhodes couldn’t resist adding a bit of his signature flair, showing off some fielding magic on set, much to the delight of the Titans and the audience. The episode promises a blend of business, banter, and boundless energy, as Jonty and the UpUrFit team bring the spirit of sport to the startup arena.

Jonty Rhodes joins Vig-Gunjal’s Upurfit as investor and brand face, dives into India’s fitness startup race

MUMBAI: It’s not every day that one of cricket’s most agile fielders jumps into the startup arena—feet first. But Jonty Rhodes, the South African dynamo whose name is etched in every highlight reel from the ’90s, has added a fresh title to his career scorecard: strategic investor and brand ambassador for Upurfit, a rising Indian sports and fitness brand.

Based in Mumbai and launched in 2023, Upurfit is angling for a slice of India’s booming sports wellness market, projected to touch $40 billion by 2030 at a CAGR of 19 per cent, according to a joint Deloitte-Google report. With its range of performance, recovery, and hygiene-focused products, the brand promises clean ingredients and results that speak to the everyday athlete.

What drew Rhodes to the brand wasn’t the glitter of celebrity endorsement. “What struck me about Upurfit was the clarity of its mission. When Vikram and Munish first approached me, it wasn’t about signing up a celebrity endorsement. Their focus was on product relevance, clean ingredients, and true performance. My family and I tried the products ourselves, and that’s when I knew I wanted to be part of this journey. I’m excited to support Upurfit not just as a face, but as a strategic investor committed to building value”, he said.

For co-founders Munish Vig and Vikram Gunjal, the association is more than a high-profile endorsement. It’s a hands-on alliance.

“For us, Jonty isn’t just a cricketing icon. He represents resilience, commitment, and performance. He’s the ideal mentor and gospeller for a brand like ours that is built for the athlete in every Indian. His belief in our products and now in our mission is a huge validation of what we’re building”, said Gunjal.

Vig added, “The turning point for us was Jonty’s feedback. He shared detailed insights on what athletes and fitness enthusiasts truly need, and his perspective has already shaped our upcoming product roadmap. His involvement goes far beyond brand value. It’s product leadership and strategic insight in action”.

Upurfit is now doubling down on building products that combine science, simplicity, and performance. With a cricketing legend on board and a homegrown ethos at heart, the brand seems primed to take a firm stance in India’s increasingly health-conscious ecosystem.

Isuzu Motors signs Jonty Rhodes as Indian brand ambassador

MUMBAI: Isuzu motors, Japanese car manufacturer, has signed on former South African cricketer Jonty Rhodes as the brand ambassador to promote the brand and its latest product V-Cross in India. The brand will complete six years on 21 August 2018 in the Indian market.

The company began its manufacturing operations in April 2016 in Sri City, spread over an area of 107 acres in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

The brand has brought the lesser used term pick-up in trend with their lifestyle and adventure pick-up, Isuzu D-MAX V-Cross. Isuzu has establishing itself rapidly as an important player in the Indian pick-up and utility vehicle market. The association brings together a distinct combination of ISUZU’s thrust on ‘Never Stop’ philosophy and Jonty’s strategy & excellence of being ‘game-changer’ in the world of Cricket. Isuzu launched its latest commercial, featuring Jonty Rhodes, underscoring the message ‘Be the Game Changer’ at a press conference held in Mumbai on 16 August 2018.

Isuzu Motors India VP- service, customer care, EA and PR J Shankar Srinivas said, “A lot of people are well travelled in this country. At the time of launch we didn’t have to convince the adventure enthusiast and the off-road communities much. With a predominant commercial pick-up segment already prevalent in this country, we needed a prime mover and found out that there is no lifestyle pick-up in this country that was really catching on.” In terms of marketing and promotions the brand is primarily focussing on TV advertising. The company’s total investment outlay is Rs 3000 crore.

According to Srinivas, the Indian market is certainly a tough market when it comes to convincing a customer about the value of a product in terms of pricing because Indians are the best negotiators in the world.

Considering the base that is very small the brand has grown by 100 per cent in 2017 compared to 2016 and this year would be another 60 per cent compared to 2017.

According to the Society of Indian Automobiles Manufacturers (SIAM), the pick-up trucks is the fastest growing and the largest segment (by volume) in the commercial vehicle market in India. It has grown from 81,622 in 2011-12 to 255,599 in 2017-18.

Isuzu Motors India deputy managing director Ken Takashima said, “Jonty perfectly represents the brand’s values and his association encapsulates what we intend to do in this country. Jonty Rhodes, an internationally known sportsman, brings with him unique qualities that differentiated him as a ‘game-changer’ in the international cricket. The V-Cross, lifestyle & adventure pick-up, has been a catalyst in bringing about a new lease of life to the people and adventure enthusiasts in India. The Indian pick-up market is growing significantly and we have been witnessing a strong inclination towards the V-Cross. We are happy to have carved a niche in the Indian utility vehicle market. We are thrilled and excited to associate with Jonty and I am sure this will make the brand & the V-Cross even more exciting and aspirational in the days to come.”

MUMBAI: South African Tourism Brand Ambassador in India, popular cricketer Jonty Rhodes, today launched “My Travel Escapades in South Africa”, a travel guide he has written in association with Lonely Planet Magazine India, to showcase the fascinating experiences in his home country.
After the successful launch of Rhodes’ “My South African Diary” last year, South African Tourism looked at a completely new facet of attracting travellers to South Africa by announcing an unprecedented ‘Take Me to South Africa’ contest. The four lucky winners of the contest embarked on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to South Africa with Rhodes, who played the role of host and tour guide during this trip.

From the country’s magnificent wildlife, iconic beaches, adrenaline pumping adventure activities, to its world-class cities, shopping, nightlife, food & wine, the chosen winners were at the forefront of some amazing, unforgettable travel experiences.
