Here are IMDb’s top six Agatha Christie film adaptations

Mumbai: Bibliophile or not, everybody is familiar with the name ‘Agatha Christie’. Prominent for her murder mysteries like Murder On The Orient Express, And Then There Were None and The Murder Of Roger Ackroyd among others, Christie has lived in our hearts and minds rent-free with her gripping tales. Over the years, she has been affectionately called the Queen of Mysteries and her stories have inspired numerous films over the last century. If you are someone who loves mysteries but doesn’t like reading books, we highly recommend watching Agatha Christie movie adaptations. They are funny, intriguing and filled with mind-boggling twists that will keep you entertained for hours.

Curious for more? Here are six best Agatha Christie film adaptations as per IMDb.

    1. Knives Out – 7.9/10

Fingers are pointed at each other after a wealthy patriarch is slain in his home, but who is the killer? When Knives Out hit the big screens, it took the world by storm with its whodunnit murder mystery and impressive cast. Although not based on a particular Christie novel, this film is director Rian Johnson’s homage to the Queen of Mysteries. Audiences admired its masterful and satirical depiction of the elite’s desire for unending wealth.

    2. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery – 7.1/10

Glass Onion, a sequel to Knives Out, is another masterpiece by director Rian Johnson. People had high hopes for the movie, and fair to say, they weren’t let down! Things go awry when someone ends up dead at Tech billionaire Miles Bron’s get-together and Detective Benoit Blanc is called in to unravel the mystery. The plot shares similarities with Christie’s popular novel ‘And Then There Were None’.

    3. Murder On The Orient Express – 6.5/10

Adapted from one of Agatha Christie’s most widely read classics, Murder On The Orient Express, the film is as good as the book. Starring our favorites like Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Kenneth Brannagh, Olivia Coleman and many others the film was a major success. The plot follows detective Hercule Poirot’s quest to solve a murder that occurs on the trains he is travelling in.

    4. See How They Run – 6.5 /10

This movie stands out on our list for being loosely adapted from Agatha Christie’s well-known play, ‘Mousetrap’. See How They Run, starring Saorise Ronan, Adrien Brody, Sam Rockwell, and many more, has won fans for its classic British design, humorous aspects, and intriguing whodunit story. The plot follows a halt in plans for a movie adaptation of an award-winning play due to the murder of a key crew member in the West End of 1950s London.

    5. Death On The Nile – 6.3/10

Kenneth Brannagh once again returns as the famed detective Hercule Poirot in this 2022 film adaption of Christie’s novel by the same name. Death On The Nile made headlines for many reasons, one of them being the second big screen adaptation of the novel, following the 1978 film. The story is a sequel to Murder On The Orient Express and follows Poirot’s next quest of solving a heiress’s murder during a vacation on The Nile.

    6. A Haunting in Venice (releasing 15 September)

This upcoming supernatural thriller is the latest film adaptation of Agatha Christie’s novel ‘Hallowe’en Party’.  The film serves as the sequel to Death on the Nile, and it is the third film where Branagh plays the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. Set in post-World War II Venice, the plot follows Poirot, now retired and living in his own exile, reluctantly pulled into solving a murder at a seance. The film is set to release in cinemas on 15 September 2023.

If you’re seeking an enthralling murder mystery you won’t have to wait too long. Catch the highly intriguing A Haunting in Venice at PVR INOX this Friday onwards.

  • Johnny Depp to soon take on the role of famed illusionist Harry Houdini

Johnny Depp to soon take on the role of famed illusionist Harry Houdini

MUMBAI: Johnny Depp, the actor famously known for taking on different roles like Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Carribean franchise and the Mad Hatter in the Alice in Wonderland franchise is in negotiations to star as famed magician Harry Houdini in Lionsgate/Summit’s The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero based on the bestselling book by William Kalush and Larry Sloman, reports The Hollywood Reporter (THR).

Since his death eighty years ago, Harry Houdini’s life has been chronicled in books, in film, and on television. Now, in this groundbreaking biography, renowned magic expert William Kalush and best-selling writer Larry Sloman team up to find the man behind the myth. Drawing from millions of pages of research, they describe in vivid detail the passions that drove Houdini to perform ever-more-dangerous feats, his secret life as a spy, and a pernicious plot to subvert his legacy. After years of struggling on the dime museum circuit, Harry Houdini got a break that put him on the front page of a Chicago newspaper. He never looked back. Soon Houdini was performing for royalty, commanding vast sums, and exploring the new power of Hollywood to expand on his legend.

At a time when spy agencies frequently co-opted amateurs, Houdini went to London and developed a relationship with a man who would run MI-5. For the next several years, the world’s most famous magician travelled to Germany and Russia and routinely reported his findings.

After World War I was successfully concluded, Houdini embarked on a battle of his own. He created a group of disguised field operatives to infiltrate the seamy world of fake spirit mediums. In doing so, Houdini triggered the wrath of fanatical spiritualists, led by the esteemed British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Death threats became an everyday occurrence, but the group would pose an even greater danger to Houdini’s legacy.

Rigorously researched, and as exciting as a good thriller, The Secret Life of Houdini traces the arc of the master magician’s life from desperate poverty to worldwide legend, initiating the reader along the way into the arcane world of professional magic. In this remarkable book, Kalush and Sloman decode a life based on deception, providing an intimate and riveting portrayal of Houdini, the man and the legend.

Depp is also set to revisit two of the earlier mentioned blockbuster franchisees in the coming year with Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and a sequel to Alice in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass.

History Channel announced late last year that they have given the greenlight to their four-hour Houdini miniseries. Academy Award winner Adrien Brody (The Pianist) will play Houdini with Kristen Connolly (House of Cards).

  • Adam Sandler’s ‘Grown Ups 2’ tops Razzies

Adam Sandler’s ‘Grown Ups 2’ tops Razzies

MUMBAI: The Raspberry Awards, better known as the Razzies, since the last 33 years have worked as the flipside of the Academy Awards. While the latter recognises the good work done in Hollywood, the former rips apart those who were not up to the mark.

This time around when Razzies announced the nominations, Adam Sandler’s Grown Ups 2 led the charts. The film is up for nine Razzie awards this year that includes Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay and Worst Actor for Sandler and Worst Ensemble Cast.

Apparently, it isn’t the first time for the actor to be nominated in the Razzies. His movie Jack and Jill created history by collecting 10 awards in 2011.

  • Warner Bros revives ‘Shantaram’, Johnny Depp taps Joel Edgerton

Warner Bros revives ‘Shantaram’, Johnny Depp taps Joel Edgerton

MUMBAI: Warner Bros is in talks with Joel Edgerton to star in Shantaram, an adaptation of the Gregory David Roberts novel that is being produced by Inifinitum Nihil partners Johnny Depp and Christi Dembrowski, and GK Films’ Graham King. Following a couple of stalled attempts to get this feature adaptation up and running after the studio paid $2 million for the rights in 2004, Depp himself jump started the process by personally courting Edgerton to play a role Depp once intended to play before the film was derailed by the writer’s strike.

Edgerton is being courted for the lead role of a remarkable protagonist who, at the time the book became a sensation in Hollywood, was said to have been modeled after the author in a thinly veiled memoir. He starts as an Australian heroin addict who escapes a maximum-security prison, reinvents himself as a doctor in the slums of India and eventually uses gun-running and counterfeiting skills to fight against the invading Russian troops in Afghanistan.

Edgerton, who most recently starred in The Great Gatsby and Zero Dark Thirty, is Australian-born and fits the model of the protagonist very well. The script is by Eric Roth. Back when Depp was going to star.

  • Brad Pitt & Paramount get the last laugh as ‘World War Z’ cracks $500 mn

Brad Pitt & Paramount get the last laugh as ‘World War Z’ cracks $500 mn

MUMBAI: Paramount Pictures reports that World War Z had passed the $500 million worldwide gross mark,

surpassing Troy’s $497.3 million to become Brad Pitt’s highest grossing film ever. One could argue that WWZ

received the benefit of a higher ticket price particularly because of its 3D numbers. But considering how badly

maligned this film was in the weeks before it bowed, hitting the half billion dollar plateau seems something to

brag about, even for a movie that cost in the $220 million range.

According to Paramount (which co-financed with Skydance), WWZ has set several records for Pitt, whose Plan B

produced. It set a personal best with a $66 million opening on 21 June, and a total of $197.4 million in US, both

of which exceeded Mr. & Mrs. Smith’s total domestic gross of $186.3 million and $50.3 million opening

weekend. The film has earned $305.2 million at the international box office, to date.

This pales in comparison to the numbers put up by Johnny Depp and his Alice in Wonderland and Pirates of the

Caribbean franchises, but Pitt has done a lot of cool movies that were never meant to be blockbusters, and this

was his most mainstream film since Troy and Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Passing the half billion dollar mark begs the

question of whether Pitt returns for an encore.
