Intelsat to provide additional high-speed services to MTN’s maritime customers

MUMBAI: Intelsat today announced that they have inked a new five-year contract with Maritime Telecommunications Network (MTN).

Intelsat will provide MTN with additional capacity to expand the range of satellite-based services that MTN provides to its maritime customers, including the worlds largest cruise lines.

The added capacity, which Intelsat will provide on its IS-805, IS-903 and IS-906 satellites, will enable MTN to offer a comprehensive suite of on-board services such as automated teller machine (ATM) transactions, daily delivery of up to 150 newspapers, high-speed Internet access and cellular telephone services to passengers and crew members sailing in the Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean and Mediterranean, says a company release.

According to MTN chief executive officer David Kagan, “MTNs leadership position in global maritime telecommunications is based on our ability to provide reliable communications solutions via satellite that customers can depend on virtually wherever they are needed. We continue to leverage our strategic relationship with Intelsat and its global system because it provides us with the coverage, superior customer service and network consistency we need in a strategic partner in order to serve our customers and enter new markets.”

“In the past, ship-to-shore communications were basic in nature and only required narrowband capabilities, but today, passengers can reap the benefits of high-bandwidth satellite delivery from Intelsat and innovative applications from service providers such as MTN to transform their onboard experience,” said Intelsats Data, president, carrier and Internet unit, John Stanton.

“The increase in daily use of broadband technology has created demand for fixed satellite services (FSS) in this important vertical market as ships continue to upgrade their networks to support applications such as e-mail and video conference. Intelsat, with global beams and prime coverage of both land and ocean regions, is well-suited to provide maritime services to customers who have real-time, modern-day, ship-to-shore communications needs,” he added.

MUMBAI: Intelsat today announced that BT’s new satellite broadband service will be supported by the Intelsat system.

An integral part of BT’s overall broadband strategy, the service is a competitively priced two-way, high-speed offering for users throughout the United Kingdom.

The Intelsat service was developed for Internet service providers (ISPs) and other licensed operators focused on meeting the broadband needs of home offices and small and medium enterprise offices, says an official release.

“There is a clear and demonstrated need for businesses, ISPs and others in the UK to have high-quality, high-speed, satellite broadband connections,” said BT Broadcast Services, head of satellite broadband, Jonathan Wing.

“Satellite broadband enables businesses and ISPs to be effective and competitive, wherever their offices are located. We chose Intelsat because of its extensive satellite experience, commitment to service quality and willingness to work with us to customize this offering to our specific needs,” he added.

With help of Intelsat, BT Broadcast Services’ UK SME broadband offering, BT Retail will offer small and medium businesses and small office/home office users a high-quality, “always-on” service that will enable end-user applications such as email, web browsing, file transfer and related services, says the release.

While the broadband service will initially be available across the United Kingdom, BT Broadcast Services has the option to expand its offering into Western Europe and possibly other regions where Intelsat already offers two-way managed broadband services.

Intelsat will manage the turnkey network, which includes capacity on Intelsat’s satellites and use of its teleport in Germany. BT Broadcast Services will manage the wholesale product, customer installation and helpdesks and market the services on a wholesale basis, informs the release.

“Intelsat’s managed solutions are an attractive and innovative offer for customers looking to serve the market quickly and manage market risk while providing hassle-free communications solutions to their end customers,” said Intelsat’s Data, Carrier and Internet business unit president John Stanton.

“Having a high-quality provider such as BT choose Intelsat to provide its broadband solution further validates our managed service strategy of leaving the network details to us to give customers the freedom to focus on pursuing new business opportunities,” he added.

Grand Santi, French Guiana gets internet access courtesy Intelsat

Global communications company Intelsat is providing satellite capacity to support the first ever internet access to Grand Santi, French Guiana.

The internet access, which is installed in a local school for use as a learning aide, will be carried over by satellite for connection to the US internet backbone. The project is the pilot site for a programme which will eventually provide an Internet and telephone network across the territory. The programme to provide connectivity and build infrastructure in French Guiana will continue through the year, with several other locations being gradually added to the network, says an official release.

The internet access solution to the area is provided through ‘Outremer Telecom’ of Martinique, in conjunction with the ‘Communaute des Communes de l’Ouest Guyanais’ (CCOG), a grouping of counties in west French Guiana. The Intelsat 801 spacecraft at 328.5E will provide the satellite capacity for this network.

According to Outremer Telecom regional network manager, Frdric Hayot there are very few satellite operators who can accommodate such a remote situation where the end users are virtually unreachable and lack the infrastructure needed to communicate with the rest of the world.

Intelsat Global Sales & Marketing Ltd. president, John Stanton, says that the internet solution that is being provided to French Guiana demonstrates not only the efficiencies that satellites can offer for remote locations, but also makes it possible to connect all the regions of the world.
