    CNN examines ‘Africa At Risk’ next month

    MUMBAI: As the world turns its attention to the upcoming G8 Summit in Scotland CNN International will produce a distinctive week of programming from 2-10 July to investigate the aid, the support and the issues facing the African continent.

    The broadcaster’s coverage will feature interviews with key G8 and African leaders, including UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, South African President Thabo Mbeki and Mozambican President Armando Guebuza. Throughout the week long initiative which the channel has dubbed Africa at Risk CNN will feature correspondent Christiane Amanpour’s reporting from Ethiopia on extreme poverty, the daily grind of people who live on less than $1 a day, and what’s being done to relieve the problem. The 90-minute Amanpour special Africa at Risk airs on 3 July at 4:30 pm. Complementing Amanpour’s reporting, CNN’s Africa correspondent Jeff Koinange and video correspondent Alphonso Van Marsh will recount the stories of people in need of humanitarian aid and the relief efforts in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa.

    CNN will also cover the Live 8 concert series on July, with highlights from performance venues in Johannesburg, London, Philadelphia, Paris, Rome, Berlin, Tokyo and Toronto. CNN correspondents will offer a closer look at the efforts of the celebrity activists and famous musicians who have united to increase global awareness of the relentless poverty that plagues the continent. Then, as the G8 leaders meet in Gleneagles, Scotland from 6 – 8 July CNN’s special coverage of Africa at Risk will continue with live reporting from the Summit by CNN’s European political editor Robin Oakley, White House correspondents John King, Suzanne Malveaux and Elaine Quijano. Additionally, CNN correspondents will offer live updates from the organized demonstrations in Edinburgh and surrounding areas.

    John King is CNN US chief national correspondent

    MUMBAI: CNN US has announced that John King will be its chief national correspondent. King’s new Washington, D.C.-based assignment will be a broad mandate for a range of reporting on interesting and important stories in the US and around the world.

    CNN US president Jon Klein said, “John is a brilliant journalist who approaches each assignment with great fervor and dedication. During his on-site reporting of the tsunami aftermath, we witnessed the breadth of John’s capabilities beyond the White House beat. Our viewers are better served by having him out in the field.”

    CNN US VP and Washington bureau chief David Bohrman said, “Here in CNN’s Washington bureau, we all know John as our senior White House correspondent. I remember meeting him when he was one of the very best reporters of any medium on any beat. This new assignment will allow King to use his range of interests and knowledge in a broader variety of reporting areas.”

    King has served as CNN’s senior White House correspondent since 1999 and has been with CNN since 1997. King’s tenure included a lead role in coverage of the 2004 presidential election, the events leading up to and around the war with Iraq, the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the tax-cut debates of 2001and 2003 and the global war on terrorism. He has conducted one-on-one interviews with an array of senior officials, including President George W. Bush, first lady Laura Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, former Secretary of State Colin Powell and current Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. King travelled with Cheney to the Middle East in March 2002 as the administration began to build support for confronting Saddam Hussein.

    In December 2004, King travelled with Powell to Thailand and other South Asian countries to cover the disaster and aftermath of the tsunami that took more than 175,000 lives in the region.

  • CNN focus in 2004 to rest on US presidential elections

    MUMBAI: There are two big television related events for next year. One is the US Presidential elections. The other is the 2004 Olympic Games in Greece. News broadcaster CNN has announced that it will offer extensive coverage of the former.
    The electoral campaign will run for nine months and CNN will start its coverage from January. Voting takes place in November. The focus will include examining the democratic candidates and what chances they have of stopping Bush from fulfilling a second term. Bush’s presidency was rough. First the events of 9/11 and then the more recent war on Iraq. The broadcaster will examine his performance in the light of these events.
    It will also have live reports of two significant events. One is the Democratic National Convention which takes place in Boston in July. The other is the Republican National Convention in August. Anchor Jonathan Mann will lead the broadcaster’s coverage and will also provide an international perspective on the same. Senior White House correspondents and anchors John King, Judy Woodruff and Candy Crowley will lend weight to the content.
    In addition to the US CNN will also bring election results from countries like Ireland. Tomorrow 1 January Ireland will elect a president for the European Union (EU). Over the next six months Ireland will be the face of the EU. Another significant event is the G8 Summit in June in Georgia. Bush will host the 30th edition of the event. The US assumes presidency of the organisation from France in 2004.
