    John Abraham unlocks Nat Geo

MUMBAI: John Abraham, who was lauded for his performance in the recent film Madras Cafe, will now take on the small screen in his new role as brand ambassador of the National Geographic Channel.

For starters, the actor-producer has kicked-off a brand new campaign titled ‘Unlock’ as the face of the channel.

Says National Geographic Channel managing director Keertan Adyanthaya:

“With this campaign, we will strive to urge our viewers to be open to new experiences, people, places, cultures and the variety that the world has to offer.”

As brand ambassador, Abraham will take Nat Geo viewers through the various aspects of the campaign, encouraging them to unlock their minds along the way. He will talk about and embody different shows aired on the channel; taking them to the rest of the world.

Says a visibly excited Abraham: “I can hardly contain my excitement at being a part of the legacy that is the Nat Geo channel. I have always been inspired by the yellow window and have followed NGC’s shows religiously. I myself love wild life, I keep on doing crazy things in life, and I am sure that the viewers and my audience will enjoy this journey with me.”

But why did an established name like Nat Geo feel the need to rope in someone like Abraham in the first place? Replies National Geographic and Fox International Channels vice president (marketing) Debarpita Banerjee, “We as a channel believe in whatever we say. John truly believes, the way we look at the channel and the content. And it was just fate; he truly experiments with life. You can see the kind of movies he supports, the kind of life he lives, and his enthusiasm for bikes and wild life. He thinks that life has lots to offer. So first the word ‘Unlock’, then John – they came together and it was a nice explosion.”

Coming to the choice of name, Banerjee says: “We were looking for a simple word, and this encapsulated everything we wanted to say. It is all about unlocking your mind, fears, opening your outlook, new possibilities, not having any prejudices, looking at a new world in a new way. We went through lots of iterations and finally came up with one word, ‘Unlock’.”

The campaign is in collaboration with Grey Worldwide, which was roped in as Nat Geo’s strategic and advertising agency. Nearly 25 per cent of the total annual marketing budget has been spent on it.

As part of marketing and promotion, Nat Geo plans to telecast promos on other channels as well, apart from focussing on outdoor and other activities. Plans are afoot to make use of social media such as facebook.com, where an official page will be launched where fans will not only be able to see but also share their views that would be rooted to Abraham for his feedback. The channel already has a laudable six million likes on Facebook.

So what does the future look like? “We want to take ‘Unlock’ to children, because they harbour a lot of fear of the unknown, of the dark, of the great outdoors. So we want to take ‘Unlock’ to summer camps. Youth is very interesting and they are buzzing with ideas. We also want to have an innovation conclave where they can submit their ideas by unlocking their imagination,” says Banerjee.

John Abraham gets award for Madras Caf

John Abraham has been honoured with Pride of the Nation award for exploring the story behind India’s former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination in Madras Cafe. The award was presented to the actor by Anti Terrorist Front’s chairman M S Bitta.

The movie which revolves around the sensitive issues like the Sri Lankan civil war portrays John in the role of RAW agent. Despite the movie being banned in certain cities, Madras Cafe managed to break the clutter of commercial films and emerged as a hit.

And now being inspired by real life patriotic stories, John also has future plans to make a movie on Abdul Hamid who was awarded with the Param Vir Chakra for his courage during the 1965 Indo-Pak war.

  • Madras Café to go the Bhaag Milkha Bhaag way

Madras Cafe is sighting a tax free status for itself, after Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.

Sources reveal that the movie opened a very important chapter in the history of India. While it was promoted as a film that was based in Sri Lanka, but at the end it was all about Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination.

The source further goes on to clarify that it is against violence and terrorism of any kind. Since it involves more than just subtle messaging around, the film deserves to go tax free.

The lead actor of the film John Abraham and director Shoojit Sircar, who have collaborated on the film wanted to see how the film will be received, before creating a case for considering tax exemption.

A fellow filmmaker who does not wish to be named wishes that the film should be seen by maximum number of people and if John is contemplating a tax free status, he is very much right in his thought.

Last heard, a case study was being readied for submission to various authorities in different states. To begin with, Maharashtra and Delhi are under consideration and other cities are expected to follow soon.

  • Madras Caf fails to rake in the moolah, collects Rs 18 crore

Madras Caf fails to rake in the moolah, collects Rs 18 crore

Madras Cafe, starring John Abraham directed by Shoojit Sircar of Vicky Donor fame, opened low on Friday but managed to do better on Saturday and Sunday, especially at select multiplexes in Metro cities. However, public response failed to match that of the critics thus the slide is inevitable on days to follow. The film has collected Rs 18 crore for the opening weekend.

Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara, a story about underworld rivalry borne out of love for same girl, fails on all counts from casting to scripting. The film, which opened on 15 August holiday and took Rs 34.6 crore for the four day weekend, could add only little over Rs 14 crore for the other four days to close its first week with Rs 48.8 crore, the best figures coming from Bombay Circuit. The film is a sequel to Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai (2010) but has failed to cash in on the success of the first installment.

Chennai Express starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone sustains well with the advantage of a weak opposition in its second week. The film collects Rs 36.7 crore in its second week to take its two week tally to Rs 178.7 crore.

B.A. Pass collects Rs 45 lakh in its third week and takes its three week total to Rs 7.05 crore.

Ramaiya Vastavaiya adds Rs 10 lakh for the fifth week to take its five week total to Rs 26.07 crore.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag has added Rs 1.1 crore in its sixth week taking its six week tally to Rs 106.35 crore.

‘John Abraham reacts strongly to ban of Madras Cafe in Chennai

NEW DELHI: Actor John Abraham has reacted strongly to the ban in Chennai of his film ‘Madras Café’, which released today with a U/A Certificate.

He said in a statement, “Madras Café is a credible film made with a lot of heart and gives audiences something novel to be entertained about, vouching and encouraging cinema.”

He therefore added, “I would like to urge all of Chennai to support Madras Café as a film and release it as it is.”

Viacom Motion Pictures, JA Entertainment and Rising Sun Films’ political thriller Madras Cafereceived a U/A certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification – minus cuts.

Director Shoojit Sircar said he was “happy that the censor board had passed the film without any cuts giving it a U/A certificate.”

He added, “This is a very special film for us and I am glad the audiences will get to experience this political thriller.”

Starring John Abraham, Nargis Fakhri, Rashi Khanna, Leena Maria and ad gurus Agnello Dias and Piyush Pandey, Madras Cafe set with the backdrop of an inter-country relation, revolves around John Abraham, an intelligence officer uncovering the workings of secret operations.

It has been presented by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures and JA Entertainment and produced by Rising Sun Films and JA Entertainment.

Abraham had specially worked to get a lean look for this film to suit his role.

  • Madras Cafe: Served ice cold

    Madras Cafe: Served ice cold

MUMBAI: As a producer, John Abraham tried a different theme with Vicky Donor and it worked. This time his banner again attempts a film off the beaten track with Madras Cafe. It is about a RAW agent on the trail of LTF (LTTE) to eliminate its leader but who instead stumbles upon a plot to assassinate an ex-prime minister of India (read Rajiv Gandhi). Only, films about RAW and espionage are not a novelty anymore and what’s more, in the absence of a valid cause or tradition about stories of Indian spy networks’ success, they don’t interest people; D-Day, a worthy effort of a RAW mission, is a recent example.

John Abraham is drawn for a mission in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, by RAW. His mission is to either create an alternative for or to eliminate Anna (read Prabhakaran) the LTF chief. This because the PM of India wants peaceful settlement and democratic set up restored through elections in the province of Jaffna. Abraham is on the job but somehow his position is always compromised and the LTF is a step ahead of him. In his pursuit of Anna, Abraham is captured but saved by the army. Eventually, in a major ambush on the LTF camp, Anna is presumed dead. However, he is not and starts his attacks on Lankans and the Indian Peacekeeping Force with more venom and brutality. This leads to the resignation of the Prime Minister (this seems to be the humour angle in the film: an Indian minister resigning, a PM at that!)

But, the film is not about LTF at all as you realise later. It is about a plot to kill the, by now, ex-PM. The people behind the plot meet at Madras Cafe in Singapore and London and even talk over open phone lines. Everything that is secret is known by all except Abraham, the RAW agent! He is clueless most of the time and a journalist from UK, Nargis Fakhri, and her personal sources know everything there is to know about the plot.

Producers: John Abraham, Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, Ronnie Lahiri.
    Direction: Shoojit Sarkar.
Cast: John Abraham, Nargis Fakhri, Raashi Khanna, Siddharth Basu, Piyush Pandey.

Who wants the ex PM killed and why? Looks like an international corporate cartel wants the ex-PM killed because he believes in peace in Jaffna while this cartel wants LTF to win and control the area after which they can have a free run on the province and thereby control the whole region which in turn would pose a great threat to India’s security! That sounds like a lot of cock and bull.

The cartel makes things easy as their messages fly high across countries which the Indians decode. The plot to kill the popular ex-PM is revealed. The super agent Abraham makes it a one man mission to save him since the ex-PM would not change his itinerary despite a threat to his life. Sadly, Abraham is late by about 30 feet to save the ex-PM but a safe distance enough to survive the bomb himself. Because the bomb is designed to only kill people in the range of twenty to twenty five feet. Of course!

He spends the next three years hitting the bottle and making occasional visits to a local church till he is ready to tell the whole story of how the PM could have been saved to the pastor.

Madras Cafe is an unconvincing, soulless film in which there is nothing for the viewer to identify with. The film lacks in drama, thrill and romance, and songs have been purposely avoided. The film rests solely on Abraham’s shoulder and he falls short by yards. His expressions refuse to change whether he has just found his wife killed or learnt a major secret. Nargis Fakhri has a brief role and she is okay. Direction is uninspiring. Rest of the aspects are passable.

Madras Cafe has opened to a weak response and chances of a pick up look poor.

  • Krrish 3 trailer crosses 7.75 mn views in less than a week

Krrish 3 trailer crosses 7.75 mn views in less than a week

MUMBAI: Bollywood seems to be taking over YouTube in a big way. The trailer for Hrithik Roshan’s upcoming superhero flick Krrish 3 has already garnered over seven million views in less than seven days on YouTube.

The two-minute long trailer was released amidst much fanfare last Monday and crossed a million views the following day. It managed to cross the three million views mark in under 36 hours as well. Given the craze of superhero films and Roshan’s fan-following, the feat seems interesting. The movie will take off from where Krrish, which was released in 2006, ended. While we have no clue about what happened to Krrish 2, the latest iteration in the Koi Mil Gaya series will see a release this Diwali.

Krrish 3 is not alone, other upcoming big releases like Once Upon Ay Time in Mumbai Dobaara has seen just over a couple of million views on YouTube within a week of its releases. Other smaller flicks like John Abraham’s Madras Cafe and Shuddh Desi Romance too have seen a huge number of views days after their release on the online video streaming site.
