John Abraham gets into film production

MUMBAI: Though he had showed his inclination to get into film production a year ago, John Abraham has now announced the making of his first feature film titled Vicky Donor under his banner J A Entertainment that will be directed by Shoojit Sircar.

Off late, Abraham has been producing a few commercials and has been contemplating branching out to feature films. Though he loved the subject on sperm donation and ventured to produce the project, he has clarified that he wouldn’t act in the film.

Besides Vicky Donor, the actor has another project in the pipeline titled I, Me aur Main in which he plays the lead.

Interestingly, the first time Abraham was inspired to support a project was in 2008 when he co-produced a documentary called Return of the Tigers by wildlife filmmaker and environmentalist Mike Pandey.

Rascals nets Rs 230 mn at BO

MUMBAI: Traditionally considered as a dull period for the box office till Diwali, the number of releases continues unabated.

Rascals, despite Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgn leading the cast and comedy specialist David Dhawan at the helm, fared poorly. Having opened reasonably well on Dussehra day, its slide started the very next day as reports of poor content spread. Even weekend collections were not up to the mark and the film took a steep dive today. The film did a net collection of Rs 230 million in its first four-day run at the box office.

Love Breakup Zindagi and Sountrack suffered from lack of patronage with many shows being cancelled.

Force fell far short of other South remakes with John Abraham enjoying very limited following and the movie having precious little to offer except action. The movie netted Rs 245 million in its first week.

Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster got Rs 61 million in its first week.

Meanwhile, Hum Tum Shabana failed to make a mark at the box office collecting a meagre Rs 19.5 million in its firstweek.

Mausam rated as a failure, adding just Rs 31 million in its second week. The two-week total of the Shahid Kapur starrer is Rs 304 million.

Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, with Rs 9 million collection in its fourth week, took its tally to Rs 588 million.

  • Release of Housefull 2 preponed to IPL time

Release of Housefull 2 preponed to IPL time

MUMBAI: Sajid Nadiadwala has preponed the release of his upcoming film, Housefull 2. The film will now be released by Eros International on 5 April instead of 1 June 2012.

The reason of the postponement came in the wake of YRF’s decision to release their Salman Khan-starrer Ek Tha Tiger on 1 June. Nadiadwala didn’t want a clash with the release of a Salman Khan film. So he thought it better to prepone than postpone the release of Housefull 2.

Housefull 2 is a comedy in true Sajid Khan style and stars Akshay Kumar, John Abraham and Riteish Deshmukh along with Asin Thottumkal, Jacqueline Fernandez, Randhir Kapoor, Zarine Khan, Shreyas Talpade, Boman Irani and Chunky Pandey.

Nadiadwala’s move can also be seen as further emboldening of Bollywood’s decision to take the IPL head on. The League goes underway on 4 April. Early last week, Vidhu Vinod Chopra made open his plans to release Ferrari Ki Sawari on 27 April next year.

  • Force is an average action fare

Force is an average action fare

Force uses the tried and tested formula of good vs evil, honest cop vs the underworld.

A remake of the Tamil film Kaakha Kaakha (also made into Telugu and Kannada), it packs the regular South formula of slotting romance and songs through most of its first half and going for no holds barred action otherwise.

The action is brute, fast paced and gory at times. But then, that is its draw for it caters to the much deprived action film lovers.

John Abraham is an undercover officer with the Narcotics Cell, with a nothing to lose attitude. He has nobody to mourn him if he were to sacrifice his life in the line of duty. He is a lethal combination of muscle and mind and believes in instant justice advocating finishing a criminal with a Rs 200 bullet rather than spending crores to keep him in jail.

He is assigned to go after all the gangs that deal in narcotics in India and, with his team of three others, busts the four major gangs operating at four entry points of India. Soon he realises that the drugs are back in the market and he and his cell were only used to eliminate all the other drug barons so that a new gang led by two brothers, Mukesh Rishi and Vidyut Jamwal, could flourish as a monopoly.
