  • Warner Bros revives ‘Shantaram’, Johnny Depp taps Joel Edgerton

Warner Bros revives ‘Shantaram’, Johnny Depp taps Joel Edgerton

MUMBAI: Warner Bros is in talks with Joel Edgerton to star in Shantaram, an adaptation of the Gregory David Roberts novel that is being produced by Inifinitum Nihil partners Johnny Depp and Christi Dembrowski, and GK Films’ Graham King. Following a couple of stalled attempts to get this feature adaptation up and running after the studio paid $2 million for the rights in 2004, Depp himself jump started the process by personally courting Edgerton to play a role Depp once intended to play before the film was derailed by the writer’s strike.

Edgerton is being courted for the lead role of a remarkable protagonist who, at the time the book became a sensation in Hollywood, was said to have been modeled after the author in a thinly veiled memoir. He starts as an Australian heroin addict who escapes a maximum-security prison, reinvents himself as a doctor in the slums of India and eventually uses gun-running and counterfeiting skills to fight against the invading Russian troops in Afghanistan.

Edgerton, who most recently starred in The Great Gatsby and Zero Dark Thirty, is Australian-born and fits the model of the protagonist very well. The script is by Eric Roth. Back when Depp was going to star.

MUMBAI: Joel Edgerton is in talks to star opposite Christian Bale in Ridley Scott’s Biblical epic Exodus

    .

The actor, who cemented his in-demand status after a series of high-profile roles including Zero Dark Thirty and The Great Gatsby, would play the Egyptian ruler Ramses in the 20th Century Fox film that is moving toward a September start date. Bale is onboard to portray Moses.

Exodus will shoot in Spain, Morocco and England.

The project had picked up steam earlier this year when Steve Zaillian came aboard as scribe. Adam Cooper and Bill Collage penned a previous draft.

Peter Chernin, who bought the project as a pitch, is producing alongside Scott. Both Chernin and Scott are based at Fox, as is Zaillian and Garrett Basch’s film rights.

Edgerton, whose credits include the critically acclaimed crime drama Animal Kingdom, broke out in Gavin O’Connor’s 2011 MMA drama Warrior. He recently stepped into O’Connor’s Jane Got a Gun opposite Natalie Portman. The Aussie actor also is onboard to star opposite Michael Shannon in Jeff Nichols’ sci-fi film Midnight Special at Warner Bros.

Zero Dark Thirty to release on 11 January

MUMBAI: PVR Pictures is readying itself to release Kathryn Bigelow’s most ambitious production to date Zero Dark Thirty, a chronicle of the decade long hunt for Al-Qaeda terrorist leader Osama Bin Laden after the 9/11 attacks, and his death at the hands of the Navy SEAL Team 6 in 2011 on 11 January.

Zero Dark Thirty (the title is military jargon for the dark of night, as well as the moment—12:30 a.m.—when the Navy SEALs first stepped foot on the compound) marks Bigelow’s most ambitious production after her impressive Oscar winning war film The Hurt Locker based in Iraq.
Deploying the full arsenal of filmic art, from the naturalistic performances of an ensemble that includes Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Ehle, Mark Strong, Kyle Chandler, and Edgar Ramirez to innovative cinematography in extreme low-light conditions and the painstakingly layered art direction, every facet of the production becomes a proving ground for Bigelow to make living history come alive on screen.
Zero Dark Thirty has received brilliant reviews from critics and is being called a taut, gritty and superbly visualized narrative neatly packed as an action thriller by a master filmmaker who knows her craft.
