    Yoodlee Films’ ‘Agra’ wins Best Film at Prestigious NYIFF Awards

    Mumbai: Globally acclaimed and celebrated film, ‘Agra’ has won two major awards at the New York Indian Film Festival Awards. The film won the award for Best Film, and actor Mohit Agarwal was awarded Best Actor Male for the film amidst eminent nominations. After receiving high praise across film festivals such as Cannes, Jio MAMI, Busan, and IFF Melbourne, Agra continues to put India on the global map by winning at the most celebrated NYIFF Awards. ‘Agra’ was one of the most awarded Indian films at NYIFF, with director Kanu Behl and actors Mohit Agarwal and Priyanka Bose nominated in principal categories.

    Alongwith the nominees, the film features a stellar cast led by Rahul Roy in a remarkable comeback, Ruhani Sharma, Vibha Chibber, Sonal Jha, and Aanchal Goswami. Directed by the renowned filmmaker Kanu Behl, the narrative delves into the complexities of love, desire, and familial bonds against the backdrop of a dysfunctional household in small-town India.

    Kanu Behl shared his excitement, “Cinema is truly a universal language, and it is overwhelming that something so personal to me is being recognized on a global stage. It is an honour to win such a prestigious award and a proud moment to represent India at this festival. The love and appreciation from audiences and critics globally have been exhilarating.”

    Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival and Civic Studios collab to inspire social change

    Mumbai: Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, known for bringing the best of contemporary cinema and talent from different parts of the world to the city of Mumbai, is all set to have some exciting additions to its 2023 edition. This year, Jio MAMI is collaborating with Civic Studios, a production house that creates entertainment focused on social change, to spark impactful conversations at the festival.

    The festival will include a new award called the Lights Camera Impact Award, presented by Civic Studios. This award will recognise and spotlight two engaging short films focusing on subjects of climate, sexuality, and caste. The intent is to award films with engaging short films that spark conversation on oft-ignored, socially relevant topics. Each winner receives a trophy and a cash prize of INR 1,00,000, to be presented to the directors. This award will encourage storytellers who are using their medium to tell powerful, meaningful stories.

    As part of this collaboration, the festival will also host a climate change-themed party titled “Too Hot to Handle.” Loosely based on the “climate fresk” parties taking Europe by storm, the party aims to bring the topic of climate change centre stage through a fun, engaging event format while fostering a can-do spirit about the future. This event will have renowned comic Abish Mathew hosting a climate change-themed game show and a walk-through exhibit on climate action stories. Targeted at film industry insiders in India, it seeks to boost climate literacy and raise awareness on how filmmakers can contribute positively as artists and filmmakers to the climate change conversation. The event itself will aim to be a zero-waste event.

    The festival will also host a thought-provoking panel discussion to explore the methods and strategies employed in mounting documentary and fiction feature projects that drive extended community engagement and use cinema as a powerful tool for social change.

    Civic Studios founder Anushka Shah shared her enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “We believe in the transformative power of cinema, and partnering with an important platform like MAMI is a tremendous opportunity to bring that to life. The Lights Camera Impact award is an initiative to highlight and encourage fresh talent driven towards social impact, while the climate change party is a way for all of us to learn and take action while having a good time.”

    Jio MAMI: ‘The Lady of the Lake’, Konkona Sen awarded

    NEW DELHI: David Chou’s Diamond Island and Haobam Paban Kumar’s The Lady of the Lake won the top Golden Gateway Awards in the International and National categories respectively in the MAMI International Film Festival.

    Mastercard gave Konkona Sen Sharma the Best Female filmmaker. Mastercard recently partnered with the Jio MAMI 18th Mumbai Film Festival with Star as a sponsor for the Best Female Filmmaker Award for the Festival held in Mumbai from 20 to 27 October.

    The festival showcased some of the latest cutting-edge, independent cinema and art house fare alongside genre movies from Bollywood, Hollywood and cult international movies. Mastercard South Asia Country Corporate Officer, India and Division President Porush Singh handed over the award to Konkona for the film ‘A Death in the Gunj’.

    Porush said, “MAMI has been a brilliant platform bringing the best of world and Indian cinema to Indian audiences. We at Mastercard are delighted to associate with MAMI and feel privileged to recognize the MAMI Best Female Filmmaker for the year 2016. This award is a validation of our commitment to empower and enable women across all walks of life.”

    The Festival screened over 180 films from 70 countries. The finale ceremony, hosted by Vickey Kaushal and Shweta Tripathi of Masaan, was attended by directors like Vishal Bhardwaj, Rajkumar Hirani, Kabir Khan, Zoya Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap, actresses Sonam Kapoor and Richa Chadha besides several others.

    Undoubtedly, the stars of the night were Anupama Chopra, Kiran Rao, and Smriti Kiran, the three women who painstakingly put the festival together, sourcing films from across the globe, arranging carefully planned masterclasses, besides hosting a number of other sessions, and one very memorable reunion of the cast and crew of Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander.

    Festival Director Jio MAMI with Star Anupama Chopra added, “MAMI is and has always been at the forefront of promoting excellence in cinema, be it unique, cutting edge parallel cinema or mainstream Bollywood cinema. The award for the Best Female Film-maker, presented by Mastercard was a tough choice for the jury as we sifted through many pieces of creative work. We hope to see more women come forward to directing or being a part of the creative process of cinema and thus contributing to the heritage of the Indian film fraternity.”

    Pernod Ricard India assistant vice-president, marketing, Raja Banerji, said “Not only are short films emerging as powerful as long feature films attracting great audience online, but are also attracting great talent from the mainstream film industry. Keeping pace with the changing times, Royal Stag Barrel Select Large Short Films is happy to own the short film category at Mumbai Film Festival.”

The contest will be judged by an eminent jury comprising actor Tisca Chopra, renowned film critic Anupama Chopra and festival creative director Smriti Kiran.
