15 creative agencies bag top honour across 19 categories

Mumbai: The India Chapter of International Advertising Association (IAA) presented the eighth edition of its prestigious IndAA Awards on 1 September at a ceremony hosted at the Taj Lands End, Mumbai.

ABP Network and Sony Pictures Network were the co-partner while Network18 and Jio Cinema were the associate partners for the event.

The awards to honour real advertising that creatively cut through to the market before it could impress the all-client jury saw work by 15 creative agencies take the top honours across 18 product and service categories and one special category.

The awards saw 102 campaigns being shortlisted of which, by design, only one in each category was awarded. In case of close contests the jury awarded joint winners after much deliberation.

Among creative agencies, Leo Burnett, MullenLowe Lintas Group and Ogilvy won three IndIAA Awards each, representing the very best work in that category. BBDO, DDB Mudra and TBWA won two awards each.

Other creative agencies and creators to win an IndIAA Award were Grey Group, Kehat Kabira Pictures, McCann Worldgroup, Publicis Worldwide, Rediffusion, SG Media, Talented, The Script Room, The Womb and Tilt Brand Solutions.

Two HUL brands were among winners, in the Food & Beverage and Personal Care categories. HDFC Life won in Insurance while HDFC Mutual Fund won in Banking & Finance.

Jury chairman and Nestle India chairman & MD Suresh Narayanan said “In my fifth year as the jury chair, I feel intimately acquainted with this room and honoured to be among some of the greatest creative minds in the country- – advertising gurus, communication experts, and marketing wizards.

Narayana presented a short poem titled ‘Jury Chair ka Sambodhan,’ “a reflection of his five years in this esteemed role.” He then went on to recite a few lines of the same in Hindi which received a hearty applause from the audience.

IAA president Avinash Pandey sheds light on how the IndIAA Awards exemplify creative excellence and have set the gold standard for creative awards in India. He stated, “It’s been an intriguing year for arguably the most active industry association of its kind. We’ve demonstrated that our industry can be a catalyst for change, particularly in breaking gender bias. We celebrate the winners reflecting the growing synergy between associations and showcasing the remarkable impact of the communication industry. The positive feedback from young leaders has been heartening, and our industry’s enthusiasm for AdAsia remains strong. We’re organising a delegation led by Sam Balsara for AdAsia 23 in Seoul, the largest event of its kind in Asia.”

IAA IndIAA Awards chairman, Abhishek Karnani said, “IAA Awards are unique because you can’t “enter” them.” A group of seasoned journalists shortlisted 102 campaigns across 19 categories from over a thousand ads. This accomplishes two important goals- first, it ensures that only genuine work is presented to the jury, keeping scam ads at bay, second, it truly democratises the creative process by not charging an entry fee, making fundraising for this grand event a challenging task.”

He further said, what sets the IAA awards apart is that they are judged by senior marketers who own and invest in the brands. We showcase the transformative power of communication for our beloved country and society, embodying IAA’s unwavering belief in the ability of communication to drive change.

IAA honoured Ayushmann Khurrana as the “Most Disruptive Brand in Entertainment Industry”. On questioning his criteria while choosing a Brand, he replied, “I believe before taking on a brand it resonates with the credibility of my films. Credibility is everything. I think only going with commercials will be very myopic. My father once told me, ‘Goddess Saraswati comes before Goddess Lakshmi. I always go like that. If you earn respect, nothing like that.”

Speaking about being an outsider in Bollywood, he said that the first choice had to be truly different and clatter-breaking. “I’ll never get a second chance being an outsider. So it’s all about the choices you make eventually. Everybody is hard-working and talented. It’s the kind of opportunities you get and firmly success is nothing but when preparation meets opportunity,” he avers.

The Asian Federation of Advertising Associations (AFAA) felicitated the all-India winners of its maiden Changemakers For Good Awards at the IndIAA Awards 2023. These meaningful awards are to salute those individuals and companies in the communication space who have used their talent to make the world a better place.

    Partnership with Bodhi Tree

On 27 April, Viacom18 announced a strategic partnership with Reliance and Bodhi Tree Systems, a platform of James Murdoch’s Lupa Systems and Uday Shankar. As part of the deal, Rs 15,145 crore will be infused by Bodhi Tree Systems and Reliance combined. Bodhi Tree will invest Rs 13,500 crore whereas Reliance Projects and Property Management Services Limited (RPPMSL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Reliance, will infuse Rs 1,645 crore. In addition, the JioCinema OTT app, currently owned by RPPMSL, will be transferred to Viacom18.

The media conglomerate also announced that Paramount Global will continue to supply its premium global content and launch Paramount+ in India in partnership with its subsidiary Viacom18. “Paramount Global, formerly ViacomCBS, reaffirmed its commitment to the partnership as a strategic partner in Viacom18,” said the company statement. “This partnership between Reliance, Paramount Global and Bodhi Tree Systems, will enable Viacom18 to transform into one of the largest TV and digital streaming companies in India,” the company said.

The infusion of Rs ~15,000 crore in Viacom18 will enable the company to make an investment in high growth businesses namely digital, sports and regional entertainment and set it on a long-term growth path, said the statement.

“The media and entertainment industry in India has a long runway for growth and has attracted the interests of global players as well as spurred mergers and acquisition activity from Indian peers,” said the statement. “Digital business models are still evolving for all players as the Indian digital ecosystem continues to mature every year, however, still some time away from being a positive contributor to the bottom line. To be a meaningful player in this landscape, where consumers are spoilt for choice, one has to invest in content, distribution and technology.”

Viacom18 will use the cash infusion to scale up its content offering for both digital and TV and strengthen its competitive position across markets. The strategic arrangement to access Jio’s 400 million strong mobility and fiber consumer base will enable Viacom18’s digital platform to access the consumers of Jio and catapult its reach. It will enable the utilisation of a large smartphone and JioPhone user base for advertising and driving subscription revenue for premium content. JioCinema will also bring its critical partnerships with marquee content producers for content and OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) for distribution.

The transaction is expected to close within six months and is subject to customary closing conditions and approvals.

    Sports business

Viacom18 forayed into the sports genre and launched three sports channels including one free-to-air channel last month. During the year, the company acquired the television and digital rights to sports properties like NBA and FIFA World Cup, two of the most watched sports properties in the world, as well as major footballing leagues La Liga (Spain), Serie A (Italy) and Ligue 1 (France), Cinch Premiership (Scotland), and other sporting events like ATP Masters Tennis, WTA, top BWF World Tour events like All England Open Badminton Championship, World Boxing Championship, Abu Dhabi T10 Cricket, and Road Safety World Cricket Series, among others.

“Viacom18 believes that sports, especially live sports, will help strengthen the value proposition of the network to consumers and will complement the current entertainment offering,” said the statement. “The network will continue to add more events and properties to its catalogue and will strive to be India’s most-coveted sports network by providing fans easy access to a comprehensive bouquet of international and premium sports content.”

The company’s TV network maintained an all India viewership share of 10.7 per cent. The share of entertainment networks in the non-news genre was 11.2 per cent with Colors being the top second primetime channel in the Hindi general entertainment genre. The channel launched ten fiction and five impact shows to strengthen its viewership share in the genre. Colors Kannada and Colors Marathi were amongst the top three channels in their respective markets with kids and English portfolios were leaders in their genres.

As per Broadcast Audience Research Council (Barc) ratings which resumed on 17 March, TV18 news portfolio was #22 in terms of reach and #32 in terms of viewership share. The network maintained leadership in English business news (CNBC TV18) and had strong positions in English and several regional markets.

“FY22 was a remarkable year, not only from the perspective of numbers, but in terms of building a strong foundation on which the business can continue to grow for the foreseeable future,” said Network18 chairman Adil Zainulbhai. “The financial performance has vindicated our decision to invest in new businesses a few years ago which have started showing encouraging positive results. In a similar vein, we have set ourselves an ambitious target to become a leading player in the digital space while strengthening our core TV offering. We will continue to solidify our ‘Digital First, TV Always’ proposition, leveraging our existing strengths to grow in segments where we are present and breaking ground in new markets with new and innovative offerings. Telco apps emerging as one-stop destinations in India: Report

MUMBAI: The newest trend in the world digital content consumption, is the emergence of telco apps as one stop shops for users. According to a Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BofAML) report quoted by Bloomberg Quint, Indians have shown a tendency to use apps like Jio TV, Jio Cinema, Airtel Wynk instead of downloading individual over-the-top (OTT) streaming apps.

Among all the offerings from the data disruptor Jio, the live television streaming app Jio TV was the most used. Even Airtel’s Airtel TV app has clocked over 10 million downloads since its launch. Other than Jio TV, Jio Music and Jio Cinema also managed to capture the imagination of Indian users.

Among the BofAML 1,000 consumers surveyed by BofAML, Jio recorded the highest number of users. The objective of the study was to document data consumption patterns. It found that 76 per cent users use mobile data to watch online videos, while 68 per cent download and save them

The online content viewing numbers have increased exponentially, with 30 per cent of users breaching their daily limit of 1/1.5 GB almost regularly.

Among the video streaming platforms, YouTube continues to hold its sway with consumers, with 58 per cent of them using the platform. 38 per cent viewed content on Hotstar, with ZEE5 and Eros being used by 2 per cent and 1per cent respectively.

“We consider this as a new emerging theme in India and expect content companies to be beneficiaries of the telco price wars. However, given the nascent stage of the market, we don’t see a clear “winner” currently in the OTT space,” read the BofAML report.

The findings of the study also indicated that cord-cutting may not disrupt the Indian television industry anytime soon, as monthly cable bills (200-400) continue to be significantly lower than what decent broadband connections cost.
