‘Dishoom’ collects Rs 11 crore on first day ; ‘Sultan’ inches to Rs 300 crore

MUMBAI: Dishoom, despite mixed reactions, opens to decent houses to show a healthy first day collections of about Rs. 11 crore. The film sustains almost to the first day performance showing little growth on Saturday but peaks on Sunday crossing Rs. 14 crore.

The film caters more to youth with its fun and action based theme. Varun Dhawan plays to the gallery to earn the film the category a general entertainer. The film ends its opening weekend with Rs. 37.4 crore.

The other two releases, Murder Madhuri and Love Ke Funday prove to be damp squibs.

Madari, promising much as it did with Irrfan Khan and Jimmy Shergill, had a fair amount of critical appreciation and audience applause but not enough to spell a healthy box office returns. After its opening weekend of Rs.8.4 crore, the film could add just about 50 per cent more during rest of the four days of the week to take its first week total to Rs 12.7 crore.

M Cream, a misconceived theme of a contemporary young bunch of boys and girls pretending to live in 1960s is very poor failing to collect just about five lakh in its first week.

Indrakumar’s third instalment of his Masti series adult comedy fails to cash it on its brand equity and does badly. The film, after a weak first week of Rs. 12.5crore, adds just Rs. 45 lakh in its second week taking its two week tally to Rs. 12.95 crore.

Sultan rides on strong Salman Khan shoulders to hold its own in its third week to add Rs. 15.75 crore thus taking its three week total to Rs. 293.71 crore (total 23 days) as it now trudges through to make to the Rs. 300 crore mark which should be attainable by the end of this week or early next weekend.

Kabali (Hindi dubbed from Tamil) has not matched the media hype it created when it comes to its box office performance with its Hindi dubbed version. Despite an extensive exposure at over 1000 screens, the film has managed to collect Rs.20.8 crore in its first week.

Box Office: Rajinikanth’s ‘Kabali’ opens weak; ‘Sultan’ continues to earn big

MUMBAI: Madaari, starring Irrfan Khan and Jimmy Shergill, was expected to draw a fair number of viewers as both enjoy a good following. The film in itself did not provide anything new and came across as a mix of few recent films. Also, for a film aimed at the multiplex audience, the title, Madaari, sounded quite outlandish!

Not able to raise curiosity, the film managed a weak opening at the box office not improving thereafter to end its opening weekend with Rs 8.3 crore.

    *M Cream went unnoticed.

*Kabali (Hindi-Dubbed from Tamil), gets a lot of media hype with the media not bothering about Rajinikanth films vis a vis Hindi film audience; in that, he commands no following here as such, neither in dubbed films nor he did in original Hindi films.

Also, filmmaking has moved on which includes the South Indian industry. The concepts have changed now and filmmaking has become technology oriented as special effects have become easier to incorporate. In such an event, you wonder at Kabali which sells the same Rajinikanth being sold since decades; only, here he is much diluted one thanks to age. The film has no gimmickry or gestures associated with Rajinikanth and hand to hand fights are avoided. Compare this to another south Indian film Bahubali, with its youthful star cast, larger than life canvass and special effect wizardry. No use taking viewers for granted, even Rajini fans.

Since the ticket buying moviegoer is immune to such hypes, the film had a low opening response with footfalls varying from 10/15 per cent to 25 per cent and the figures reflecting the fact. The film collected about 3 crore on day one with a negligible raise on days two and three.

The film collected Rs. 12.7 crore for its opening weekend despite an extensive release with over 1000 screens.

*Great Grand Masti fails to add much to its opening weekend figures of 7.8 crore. With the rest of the four days of the week collecting just Rs 4.7 crore to take its first week total to Rs 12.5 crore.

*With an open field and Salman as main attraction, Sultan continues to hold its own as the film collects Rs 277.96 crore at the end of its second week (16 days. The film adds another Rs 11.09 crore for its third weekend taking its 19 day total to Rs 289.05 crore.

  • Shorgul……About nothing….

    Shorgul……About nothing….

MUMBAI: Providing entertainment to the high priced admission rates paying audience seems to be no more the reason why many producers/ directors make films. That too in a country where each state charges entertainment tax at whim, and, which consists of a major portion of the admission rates.

Shorgul is another film that decides to coincide its content with the incidents that happened in a particular state, UP in this case, driven by communal politics. So the content is the routine say, a piece of local news from any vernacular media like a Hindu- Muslim boy girl romance, statue of a deity found in Muslim’s farm, just about anything that can tilt the balance of harmony between communities. In the process, the film also touches some of the more controversial events of the state.

A Hindu boy Anirudh Dave and a Muslim girl, SuhaGezen, are neighbours growing together. As they mature, Anirudh has fallen in love with Suha but it is one-sided and Suha treats this just as a friendship and she is soon to be engaged to be married to a Muslim boy, HitenTejwani.
The town has a gallery of politicians named so as to bear close resemblance to real life active politicians of UP. Jimmy Sherrill is a Hindu politician (modelled after SangeetSom) and member of the assembly. He is the kind armed with fuel and always on a lookout for fire to add to it. On the other side is Narendra Jha (representing Azam Khan). While, there is also a caricature of Amar Singh, Sanjay Suri plays the UP CM MIthilesh Yadav kind of role. While Jimmy and Jha ferment trouble using community card, there is also a saner, balancing factor in town in Ashutosh Rana, father of the lovelorn Hindu boy, Anirudh, who is respected by both the communities.

This is about as original as the makers get for rest of the events loosely woven together in the name of a political drama. The end is, as is the norm in such a film, about sermonizing, blaming mainly the politicians for muddying up the peace between the two communities. The film has a horde of talented actors in the cast and even as all of them do well, Ashutosh and Hiten stand out.

As for the commercial for Shorgul, the film promises none.

Producers: Swatantra Vijay Singh, Vyas Verma.
Directors: Pranav Kumar Singh, Jitentra Tiwari.
Cast: Jimmy Shergill, Ashutosh Rana, Narendra Jha, Anirudh Dave, HitenTejwani, Sanjay Suri, Eijaz Khan, SuhaGezen, Neetu Pandey, Hrishitaa Bhatt, Jay Shanker Pandey.

  • ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’: Fair entertainer

‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’: Fair entertainer

MUMBAI: Most sequels are not even sequels; they are just another story taking advantage of the same title used by an earlier successful film. To that extent, Tanu Weds Manu Returns justifies its name, being a proper sequel to Tanu Weds Manu (2011).

In the first film, Kangana Ranaut and R Madhavan were married after a long drama. Tanu (Ranaut) had two suitors, Madhavan and Jimmy Shergill, both of whom brought a baraat to her house. Shergill was the violent kind and even ready to shoot down Madhavan but later had a change of heart looking at Kangana’s preference.

Of course, the writer and director have bent many rules, taken a lot of liberties wanting to live up to the original — but they have come up with a fairly entertaining fare.

The first film ended on a happy note with Tanu marrying Manu. The sequel starts with realities of married life. It is four years since they married and the marriage has gone sour. The couple is in London. Madhavan, who is now a doctor(!), keeps busy while Kangana tries her hand at various activities including to run a cr?che but to no avail. Compared to her tomboyish life in her native Kanpur, she feels clamped and bored.

The film opens with the couple landing up at a madhouse. And one thought visiting marriage counselors solved marital problems! Since they are at an asylum, a panel of experts sits with them as both exchange accusation. Finally, Madhavan becomes violent and the expert doctor admits him in the asylum.

Kangana is on her way back to Kanpur, relieved she has got rid of Madhavan and can now be free again to get back to her old bold lifestyle. But, with a pang of guilt, she calls up Madhavan’s cousin, Deepak Dobriyal, to get Madhavan back from the asylum. Madhavan decides to return to India instead of staying back in London and carrying on with his practice. But he is morose. He still loves Kangana and expects that she will change her mind and come back to him.

But, soon, Madhavan finds someone who can fill his void; Kangana 2, a Tanu lookalike in Kusum, a Haryanvi Kangana in dual role. Kangana 2 is an athlete who not only represents the University but the state too. Initially, he just thinks that she is Tanu and starts chasing her till he is almost beaten and lynched by a mob when Kangana 2 shouts foul. He saves himself in the nick of time showing her the picture of his wife and how both look alike.

Soon a romance starts budding between the two. While Madhavan cultivates Kangana 2, Kangana 1 is busy catching up with her old flame, Shergill, and also uses a tricky paying guest law student in her house, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub. Ayyub starts his friendship with Kangana 1 by addressing her as a sister but soon gets emotional about her. He even sends divorce papers to Madhavan on behalf of Kangana 1 without her knowledge. In due time, the divorce comes through.

After crossing a lot of hurdles, Madhavan gets the approval of Kangana 2 and her family to agree to their marriage. That is when jealousy sets in and Kangana 1 reacts. After that, she sets out to win over Madhavan again.

The comedy ends here and melodrama begins. While Kangana 1 tries to belittle everyone, when it comes to running down Kangana 2, she gets it back because the latter is much more qualified and endowed despite being from a village background. Their first encounter cuts Kangana 1 to size. The melodrama ends opting to re-establish the “so called” Indian values as love is rediscovered.

Despite liberties taken, the script makes sure its entertainment quotient does not drop much. However, the end drama seems a little stretched. The director tries to stick to the basic idea of living up to being a worthy successor to the original; making Indian wedding films gives you a lot of stock content which is common to all films. The film manages to do so by about 75 per cent for after all, originals are always the best while in a sequel the surprise element is lost. Thankfully, the film does not go overboard by including songs and offers a couple of peppy numbers. The film is a few seconds over 120 minutes but can still do with a bit of trimming, especially towards the end. Photography is okay. Background score is effective at points.

As for performances, it is a Kangana vehicle all along and offers her a rare opportunity to pit her against herself in two varied characters. While Kangana 1 is good as usual, Kangana 2 steals a definite march over her: she adapts to being a native Haryanvi villager totally in command of her situations. Madhavan, despite having limited scope, manages to hold his own. Shergill’s character of a perceived threat remains just that. He is a paper tiger with a soft heart. Dobriyal impresses. Swara Bhaskar, Eijaz Khan and Dipti Mishra are okay. Ayyub is good and so is Rajesh Sharma, as usual. The supporting cast contains of celebrated character artistes like Rajendra Gupta, K K Raina, Navni Parihar and Rajesh Sharma who all justify their roles.

Tanu Weds Manu Returns is a fair entertainer. However, the opening response being weak, it faces further hurdles of IPL match today and the finals on Sunday, which will affect it. Also, the film caters mainly to the multiplex audience, factors, which may limit its prospects.

Producers: Krishika Lulla, Anand L Rai

    Director: Anand L Rai

Cast: R Madhavan, Kangana Ranaut, Jimmy Shergill, Ejaz Khan, Swara Bhaskar, Deepak Dobriyal, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Rajendra Gupta, Navni Parihar, K K Raina, Dipti Mishra, Rajesh Sharma, Akash Dahiya
