MUMBAI: K Sera Sera is launching a music channel on 1 December with an investment plan of Rs 250 million. With this, the production company will make an entry into the broadcasting space.

K Sera Sera has bought out Hamara Samay TV News Network, the company that owns and operates music channel Jhankar TV. But the brand stays with the original promoters of Hamara Samay who will continue to run Jhankar TV. The distribution platform of Jhankar TV will, however, shift to K Sera Sera’s new music channel.

“The distribution network which belonged to Jhankar TV will come to us as part of the agreement. The deals struck already with cable operators for carrying Jhankar TV will pass on to us. This will guarantee the distribution of our new channel on cable networks in the Hindi markets,” says Sapna Chaturvedi who will head the music channel.

K Sera Sera’s idea of running a music channel is seen as a strategy to synergise with its movie production business. The company spends substantial amount of money for promoting its movies on music channels. Having a channel of its own would, thus, make strategic sense.

Eternal Dreams, the company that Chaturvedi owns, will manage the operations of the channel as a turn key project and be paid a fee by K Sera Sera. “The programming will revolve around musical reality shows, contests, interactive programming, countdowns, music and entertainment,” says Chaturvedi.

MUMBAI: K Sera Sera is buying out Hamara Samay TV News Network, the company that owns and operates music channel Jhankar TV.

The acquired company will be renamed K Sera Sera Entertainment. It will become a subsidiary of K Sera Sera Productions Ltd, the listed company.

The promoters of Hamara Samay TV News Network will be given around 20 per cent stake in K Sera Sera Entertainment. “We have applied for a change in shareholding. Hamara Samay promoters will hold close to 20 per cent in the subsidiary company,” says a source in K Sera Sera.

Sapna Chaturvedi is going to head K Sera Sera Entertainment. Chaturvedi also owns a media company, Eternal Dreams.

Jhankar TV will be given a new name and the channel will be relaunched. “We have not yet finalised on the name but it may be called K Sera Sera. Chaturvedi will be the managing director of the company and the channel is being revamped by Diwali,” says the source.

K Sera Sera’s idea of running a music channel is seen as a strategy to synergise with its movie production business. The company spends substantial amount of money for promoting its movies on music channels. “We will still use the general entertainment channels for promoting our movies. But we don’t have to spend on music channels,” the source says.

K Sera Sera also plans to ramp up its movie production business. The company yesterday approved an enabling clause to raise debt of up to Rs 5 billion. “We have big plans for our movie business. Having a music channel makes strategic sense,” says the source.

Though K Sera Sera was also weighing options of launching the music channel on its own, it decided on the acquisition route. “Jhankar already enjoys distribution. We realise the problems we would have to face in distributing a new channel,” the source adds.

K Sera Sera looks to launch music channel; eyes buyout of Jhankar

MUMBAI: K Sera Sera is putting its expansion plans in place. One among them: the launch of a music channel, for which it is in advanced negotiations with Jhankar TV to acquire a controlling stake.

The company is also working out output deals which will allow it to have a strong movie production pipeline. On the agenda is a presence in international distribution and an entry into the home video segment. “Lining up movie production contracts is a high priority area. Discussions are on with several parties in this area,” says a source close to the company.

K Sera Sera is in talks with Eros International Plc for a deal that in value terms could be around Rs 2 billion over a longer period, the source adds. Eros, which globally distributes Bollywood content, recently floated an initial public offering and is listed in the London Stock Exchange (LSE).

“While the deal with Sahara was for just satellite TV rights, the talks with Eros are much broader in scope. Eros has entered into music rights and has a wide international movie distribution network. K Sera Sera has produced many movies. If the deal sails through, it will help the company scale up its movie pipeline,” says the source.

K Sera Sera senior executives were not available for comment on both the music channel and the movie deal with Eros.

On the music channel front, K Sera Sera plans to run it through a subsidiary company. By being producers of Bollywood movies, the channel will have a synergistic relationship.

“We are in advanced talks with K Sera Sera for diluting majority stake. Since they have movie software, Jhankar TV stands to gain. But no conclusive agreement has been reached yet,” says Hamara Samay TV News Network Pvt Ltd president Zaheer Ahmad. Hamara Samay is the company that owns and operates Jhankar TV.

K Sera Sera is, however, weighing other options including the possibility of launching the music channel on its own. “The company, though, realises the distribution problems of a new channel,” says the source.
