Disney delays voyage of ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean 5’; eyeing 2016 to set sail

MUMBAI: Disney has moved forward its summer 2015 release date with Pirates Of The Caribbean 5, and the studio is now looking to slot it for summer 2016. This will create some jockeying from other studios next summer, Pirates had been slated for a 10 July release and other studios steered clear of that date.

The studio and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have an advanced outline from scribe Jeff Nathanson, who is writing. They have directors Joachim Roenning and Espen Sandberg, who are new to the big scale of a film like Pirates. The studio would have to get into production by February, which would mean prepping off the outline.

The decision was made that it wasn’t worth rushing until they are sure the script is in place. The first four films grossed $3.7 billion, and the last installment, On Stranger Tides, crossed the $1 billion mark. There is a sequel to The Avengers and the first of the next three installments of the Star Wars franchise, directed by JJ Abrams lined up for Disney. There is also the Marvel pic Ant-Man, and Inside Out from Pixar.

Johnny Depp is firmly committed to return to his Jack Sparrow role, but has his hands full with Into The Woods and Alice In Wonderland 2.

  • Jerry Bruckheimer hopes for a Lone Ranger franchise, Top Gun sequel

Jerry Bruckheimer hopes for a Lone Ranger franchise, Top Gun sequel

MUMBAI: The American film and television producer Jerry Bruckheimer claimed his 30 year old endeavour to make a sequel of the successful Tom Cruise starrer Top Gun at the Produced By conference. The original 1986 movie directed by the late Tony Scott saw Tom Cruise as ‘Maverick‘ the rebel fighter jet pilot. Bruckheimer stated that the sequel would be done with Tom (Cruise) off course, who is still known as ‘Maverick‘ by many fans, while Paramount are still interested in the project too.

Commenting on his latest venture, Lone Ranger with the versatile star Jonny Depp, Bruckheimer said that he hopes Lone Ranger becomes a franchise with Depp and Armie Hammer, although nothing concrete has been decided yet. Leaving the ball to the audience he added, "If the audience likes the movie then Disney will come to me and we‘ll make another or it will be a one-off."

Revealing about the star Jonny Depp who is along with Bruckheimer, prepping a fifth installment of Pirates of the Caribbean for the studio, said that "Jonny often travels with his Captain Jack Sparrow costume and visits children‘s hospitals unannounced. He knows he is a very fortunate person and he wants to give back."

With Lone Ranger slated to release on July 4, Bruckheimer acknowledged the summer packed competition saying, "It‘s very hard this summer. You have to hold your seats; it‘s not the number of theatres but the number of seats. Warner Bros‘ Man of Steel is coming out this week and then next week another blockbuster will come out, if there is another blockbuster, and Superman will move to small theatres and someone else will get their seats," He noted that Warner Bros and Legendary‘s Pacific Rim is coming out the week after Lone Ranger and that worries him.

In the same context, Bruckheimer said Sunday that a lot of movies coming out at the same time can be a good thing. "I root for my competition to be successful because it increases the audience‘s appetite for watching movies," he added, noting that, in today‘s environment of so much good TV and other platforms, movies have to work hard to get people out of their homes.

  • Zee Cafe gets into action mode with ‘Without A Trace’

Zee Cafe gets into action mode with ‘Without A Trace’

MUMBAI: In a bid to add spice to its lineup English general entertainment channel Zee Cafe will kick off the action show Without A Trace from 15 October at 9 pm.

This is a procedural drama about the New York Missing Persons Squad of the FBI. The sole responsibility of the special task force is to find missing persons, by applying advanced psychological profiling techniques to peel back the layers of the victims’ lives and trace their whereabouts in an effort to discover whether they have been abducted, been murdered, committed suicide or simply run away.

The show has been produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. The team reconstructs a ‘day of disappearance’ timeline that details every minute of the 24 hours prior to the disappearance and digs into every facet of the victim’s life, following one simple rule: learn who the victim is in order to learn where the victim is.

Senior agent Jack Malone (Anthony LaPaglia), a tough but compassionate, seasoned and astute professional, heads the dedicated team that knows too well that every second counts when someone vanishes. His squad includes Samantha Spade (Poppy Montgomery), an agent whose blonde good looks belie a tough, complex approach to her work; Vivian Johnson (Marianne Jean-Baptiste), a no-nonsense investigator with a special insight into victims’ families; Danny Taylor (Enrique Murciano), whose sensitivity is often covered up by his street smarts, and the strait-laced Martin Fitzgerald (Eric Close), who joined the team as a result of his father’s connections but
    has since earned his stripes.

The team’s newest member is street-smart F.B.I. rookie Elena Delgado (Rosalyn Sanchez), formerly of the N.Y.P.D. vice unit. As the agents work on varied and complicated cases, details about their own lives continue to unfold.

In addition as a Diwali special the channel will air an Abba concert on 21 October at 4 pm. One of its local shows After Hours celebrates one year with a one hour special on 15 October at 7:30 pm. It will be repeated the following Monday at 3 pm, Wednesday at 10:30 am, Saturday at 10:30 pm and on Sunday at noon.

The channel will also air the classic mini series The Thornbirds from 10 October from Tuesday-Saturday at 2 pm. This mini series covers 60 years in the lives of the Cleary family, brought from New Zealand to Australia to run their aunt Mary Carson’s ranch. The story centers on their daughter, Meggie, and her love for the family’s priest, Father Ralph de Bricassart. Meggie tries to forget Ralph by marrying dashing stockman Luke O’Neill, but she and Ralph are soon reunited, with tragic consequences for them both.

This romantic drama has won four Golden Globes (four nominations) and six Emmies (10 nominations).
