Heavy demand for entries to Sony’s Chappar Phaad Ke

Sony Entertainment Television’s Jeeto Chappar Phaad Ke (JCPK), which is set for launch in January, is generating a tremendous response from the public with over 900,000 entries received in just 12 days.

Rekha Nigam, senior VP, programming and production, said there would have been an even heavier rush if entries had been allowed through call centres and the Internet rather than only on competition postcards. The cut-off date for sending in the postcards was 25 November.

Sony looks to have a winner on its hands if the advance buzz around the channel’s riposte to Star TV’s Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) is anything to go by. Ten second ad spots have been sold at Rs275,000 which is much higher than what Star charged for KBC (Rs80,000) at the time of its launch. KBC rates peaked at Rs450,000 and has now settled at Rs350,000.

Rivals cool to Zee move on Sawaal

Zee TV’s decision on Sunday to suspend Sawaal Dus Crore Ka, its answer to Star TV’s Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), elicited suitably gracious reactions from rivals Sony and Star. Both channels refused to gloat, at least in public, over the new turn of events.

Rekha Nigam, Sony’s head of programming, said it was always sad to hear of the death of a programme, for whatever reasons. Nigam, however, expressed confidence that the same fate would not befall Sony’s Jeeto Chappar Phaad Ke (JCPK) which is slated to go on air in January. She said enough preparation had gone into the creation of the programme to make it a success. While comparisons to KBC would inevitably follow, JCPK will have its own unique pulling power, she added. “The experience is what will make JCPK survive rather than purely the money aspect.” Sameer Nair, Star TV’s Head of Programming, saw the development as an interesting one and according to him, inevitable considering the overall deficiencies Sawaal had when compared with KBC. “It will be interesting to see what Zee comes up with. After all Zee’s new show will have to contend not only with with KBC but Sony’s Chappad Phaad Ke too, he said.”

Queried about reports that the enthusiasm for KBC itself was starting to wane, Nair said that what had happened was that viewer support was now at a steady level. The initial craze was bound to taper off, he clarified. Nair said that Star had a long-term commitment to KBC but might look at short breaks in the show in future as per the situation. This was the norm abroad also he asserted. He denied there were any plans for a Junior KBC aimed at kids.

Following the success of the show which aired Bollywood’s Aamir Khan and Sonali Bendre, discussions are on to rope in Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukherjee for an episode, according to The Asian Age. The Shah Ruk episode is likely to be aired on January 1, 2001.

  • ‘Bachke Rehnaa’ looks promising enough to revive a flagging genre

‘Bachke Rehnaa’ looks promising enough to revive a flagging genre

Sony‘s latest game show has the juice to keep viewers hooked to the telly for a substantial time period. On Monday at 8 pm SET premiered the weekly Bachke Rehnaa the Indian adaptation of Russian Roulette.

The half-hour show started with each of the four participants being introduced in a circle. This was a celebrity special featuring heroines from popular SET programmes: Simone Singh from Heena, Tasneem from Kkusum, Pooja Ghai from Par is dil ko kaise Samjhaye and Aparna from Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka.

The show scores points with its snappy and straight to the point style. No lengthy intros, no time wasting tete-a-tete. The host Mohnish Behl has a comfortable rapport not just with the participants but also with the audience. His smooth flow of dialogue delivery which enabled him to gel nicely with the participants was a welcome change from the cavalier style of Sony‘s earlier Jeeto Chappar Phaad Ke (JCPK) and the irritating mumbling, stuttering, stop and start goings on that took place on the Zee flop show Sawaal Dus Crore Ka.

The topics ranged from music to mythology. The level of difficulty went up in that with each round the number of choices available. increased. After the end of the first round the person with the most amount of money pulls the lever and any of the other three participants disappeared. The procedure continues till just one person is remaining who takes home the prize money collected.

Another innovation is that unlike the game shows mentioned earlier there are no helplines like 50-50, phone a friend or ask the audience in Bachke Rehnaa. This heightens the tension and pulse rate with just ten seconds to give the response. There is no respite if one gets cornered. Also the red chaser light which determines who goes out of the game moves to a sound resembling the ticking of an old alarm clock. In addition in the third round with just two participants remaining one has the option of answering the question oneself or passing on the buck so to speak.

In the fourth round the winner Aparna was asked five questions within a minute without any options. A wrong answer meant automatic elimination. She surprisingly did not know that the pair of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi reached all four tennis Grand Slams in 1999.

To conclude Bachke Rehnaa is worth checking out for those tired of the rigmarole of soaps and looking for quick rushes of excitement.
