    Jalsha Movies to air ‘Vivel Filmfare Awards’ in April

    KOLKATA: The city is all geared up to recognise the Bengali, Assamese and Oriya films as it hosts the ‘Vivel Filmfare Awards 2013’ today. Jalsha Movies, the broadcast partner for the awards will air the show in April.

     

    As per sources, veteran actor Jaya Bachchan is likely to fly to Kolkata to present the life time achievement award.

     

    The iconic ‘Black Lady’ will be given to winners in 21 categories for Bengali films and four each for the Oriya and Assamese movies.

     

    “The telecast of the award function will be done in April end. Jalsha Movies is synonymous with being home to the biggest blockbusters of Bengali cinema, hence it is our privilege to be associated with Filmfare,” said Star Jalsha and Jalsha Movies business head Kevin Vaz.

     

     

    The list of nominations for the ‘Vivel Filmfare Awards 2013’ (East) in the ‘Best Film’ category for Bengali movies include ‘Alik Sukh’, ‘Chander Pahar’, ‘Mishawr Rawhoshyo’, ‘Phoring’ and ‘Shobdo.’

     

    The nominees in the ‘Best Director’ category are: Aparna Sen for ‘Goynaar Baksho’, Indraneil Roy Chowdhary  for ‘Phoring’, Kamaleshwar Mukherjee for ‘Chander Pahar’, Kaushik Ganguly for ‘Shobdo’, and Shibprasad Mukhopadhyay and Nandita Roy for ‘Alik Sukh.’

     

    Celebrities like Bidyut Chakravarty, Rhituraj Dutta, Pulak Gogoi, Arup Manna, Kenny Basumatary and Manash Hazarika among others from the Assam cine world are likely to be a part of the award ceremony.

     

    That apart, representing the Oriya film industry are: Susant Mani, Anubhav Mohanty, Anubhav Mohanty, Archita Sahu and Barsha.

    KOLKATA: The 19th Kolkata International Film Festival kicked off with a bang on Sunday with actors including Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Mithun Chakraborty and Kamal Haasan gracing the show. The eight-day festival that paid tribute to 100-years of Indian cinema was inaugurated by the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Netaji Indoor Stadium, who also announced that from its next edition, it will be a competitive affair.

     

    Other distinguished guests like filmmaker Sandip Ray, Bengali film actress Sabitri Chatterjee and Supriya Devi, Dipankar Dey and music director Dwijen Mukherjee, also participated in the lamp lighting ceremony that concluded with Big B releasing the fest’s brochure.

     

    Actors of the regional film industry Dev and Koel Mallick felicitated Big B with an uttariya (scarf) and a metal-cast memento. The other luminaries were welcomed subsequently in a similar manner.

     

    Over the next eight days, the festival will feature 189 films from 63 countries at 13 venues including Nandan-Rabindra Sadan complex, Inox City Centre 1 and Star Theatre. The festival will witness an estimated 3,000 delegates and 24 international guests. Noted Israeli filmmaker Amos Gitai is also likely to attend the film festival and also conduct a workshop for film students.

     

    Others who are expected at the event include Bollywood actor Sharmila Tagore, director Madhur Bhandarkar and Shoojit Sarkar, National Award-winning Malayali filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan, among others. Actors Sushmita Sen, Konkona Sen Sharma, Moushumi Chatterjee, Bipasha Basu and Rani Mukherjee will attend the closing ceremony on 17 November.

     

    “The film screening is going to be an enriching experience for cinema connoisseurs,” said experts present at the event.

     

    Shah Rukh Khan, who is also the brand ambassador of West Bengal, hopes that platforms like the KIFF will take Indian films to greater heights. “Creative interactions of this scale will help Indian films reach new heights, something that great filmmakers present tonight, and those who have passed away, like the wonderful Rituparno, dreamt for Indian cinema,” said Khan.

     

    Thousands of film lovers swarmed the venue to attend the glittering ceremony and get a glimpse of their favourite stars present at the event. They were mesmerised by the speech of the actors, especially Bachchan, who interspersed his speech with Bengali words and renditions of Bengali poems.

    KOLKATA: The 19th Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) will open with the screening of an unreleased film of the iconic Rituparno Ghosh, amid the presence of a galaxy of stars including the legendary Amitabh Bachchan.

     

    “Ritu da is no more with us. But he continues to live with his immortal creations. His unreleased film Taak Jhaank (Sunglass) will be screened for the first time in the inaugural ceremony of the 19th Kolkata International Film Festival on that day,” West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said.

     

    Ghosh’s satire Taak Jhaank brings together the two veterans of Bollywood – Jaya Bachchan and Naseeruddin Shah for the very first time. Ghosh died 30 May following a heart attack.

     

    The film festival to be inaugurated by Amitabh Bachchan on 10 November would be graced by a number of luminaries including megastar Shah Rukh Khan – also the state’s brand ambassador as well and versatile actor Kamal Hassan.

     

    Incidentally, the opening day of the fest will coincide with the international Test Match between India and West Indies at the Eden Gardens where batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar will be appearing for the last time before he hangs up his boots after playing the next – his 200th in Mumbai.

     

    Kolkata will be honoured to have a very eventful day on 10 November. The cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar will be playing the last day of his 199th Test match at the Eden Gardens on that day. Kolkata’s showpiece event, the KIFF will also be held on that day in the august presence of iconic Amitabh ji, Shah Rukh and Kamal Hassan. We are so lucky to have the presence of all those luminaries on a single day at Kolkata,” added Banerjee.

    Veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan will inaugurate the 19th Kolkata International Film Festival in the month of November. Kolkata Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee has made an official declaration regarding the same, “I am very happy and delighted to share with you all, that Shri Amitabh Bachchan ji, a great legend, has kindly accepted our invitation to inaugurate the 19th Kolkata International Film Festival to be held on 10th November, 2013.”

    Bollywood celebrities like, Shah Rukh Khan, Jaya Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan are also expected to be present at the film festival. CM Mamta Banerjee has said that she is making efforts to get the whole Bachchan family at the event and at the same time she said that state’s brand ambassador SRK is also likely to be present there. If all these celebs come in the film festival then it would be really amazing for their fans to see all of them on the same platform together.

    Actor Sanjay Dutt, who had acted as member of a qawali party forty-one years earlier in his father Sunil Dutt’s Reshma aur Shera as a child artiste, will be rendering a qawali once again as the iconic Sher Khan in the forthcoming re-imagined version of Zanjeer.

     

    While the new version being released on 7 September stars Ramsharan and Priyanka Chopra with Sanjay Dutt, the original starred megastar Amitabh Bachchan – who was also an artiste in Reshma aur Shera – with Jaya Bachchan.

     

    Sanjay’s formal debut had come years later in his father’s film Rocky, which went on to be a massive hit. Today after 41 years in the industry, Sanjay has over 150 films in his kitty.

     

    Dutt has donned a never-seen-before look. His look as Sher Khan which was revealed some time back in the trailer has already been admired by audiences.

     

    The actor himself was extremely psyched about doing the qawali sequence in the song Khochey Pathan Ki Zubaan and director Apoorva Lakhia is confident that this will be one of Sanjay Dutt’s most memorable performances on the big screen.

     

    Along with Sanjay Dutt Apoorva Lakhia’s tour de force Zanjeer stars an elite ensemble cast of Ram Charan, Priyanka Chopra, Prakash Raj, Mahie Gill and Atul Kulkarni.

     

    Zanjeer has been produced by Reliance Entertainment, Puneet Prakash Mehra, Sumeet Prakash Mehra and Flying Turtle Films, and co-produced by Rampage Motion Pictures.

    MUMBAi: Lata Mangeshkar will present the Deenanath Mangeshkar Award (Vishesh Puraskar) to veteran Bollywood actress and Rajya Sabha member Jaya Bachchan on 24 April. The 65-year old actress will be presented with the award for her dedicated services to Indian theatre and cinema on the death anniversary of Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar.

    Incidentally, Bachchan played a rising playback singer in the Hrishikesh Mukherjee helmed film Abhimaan where she played a character that was said to be modeled on the then leading songstress Lata Mangeshkar.

    "I remember she (Jaya) would come for my song recordings before she began shooting for Abhimaan. During my recordings she used to stare at me and I kept wondering as to why she was doing this. When I saw the film, I noticed that she had copied my gestures, like the way I used to stand, adjust my pallu among a few other things," the singer averred.

    The Master Deenanath Award, instituted in the name of Mangeshkar‘s father, recognizes service in the field of music and films.

    Suresh Wadkar and Vandana Gupte will be awarded for their contribution to Marathi theatre and cinema.

    Veteran musicians, artists, actors, dramatists and social workers will also be honoured by awards that will consist of a memento and cash prize of Rs 101,001.

    NEW DELHI: A reporter of Aaj Tak who was attempting to check security measures taken in the wake of the gang rape of a girl in a moving bus last Sunday was harassed in broad daylight today in Vasant Kunj area of New Delhi by three eve teaser in a car.

    A team of ten women reporters from the network which went around the city, however, said that “the power of camera made us feel safe on the haunting and crime filled streets of Delhi during the night”.

    Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan raised this incident in Parliament today and demanded an investigation. Congress MP Girija Vyas also raised this story and expressed her concern on the same. Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde shared his concern on the matter and assured the house of investigation on this matter.

All the gruesome incidents that have happened before will be reopened, to open the government’s eyes.     Expressing the shock at today’s incident, Ashish Bagga, Group CEO, India Today Group, said: “It is horrible and barbaric! Such incidents are dragging us back to the uncivilized era in spite of taking us forward! If the media people themselves are becoming victims, I wonder the scare felt by the ordinary women in city! It’s a shame for all of us and our foremost duty is to fight the menace”.

    Aishwarya Bachchan receives French Honour for the Arts

    NEW DELHI: Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has been conferred a civilian award by the French government for her contribution to the arts.

    French Ambassador Francois Richier conferred the prestigious honour of ‘Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters‘ to her.

    Aishwarya thanked the French government and her family for their support, and expressed gratitude towards her colleagues. The honour is bestowed on those showing exceptionable contribution to arts in France and the rest of the world. Noted celebrities like Shah Rukh Khan and Nandita Das have received the honour in the past.

    The entire Bachchan family, other than Jaya Bachchan, was present at the event. Aishwarya‘s daughter Aradhaya was also there. Others included actress Nandita Das, socialite Parmeshwar Godrej, and filmmaker Pritish Nandy.

    After winning the Miss World crown in 1994, Aishwarya debuted as an actress in Mani Ratnam‘s 1997 Tamil movie ‘Iruvar’. Later she had super hits like ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’, ‘Taal’, ‘Guru’, ‘Jodhaa Akhbar’ and ‘Devdas’ among others.
