Facebook to sub-licence La Liga to broadcaster: Report

MUMBAI: Social media giant Facebook took several industry pundits by surprise when it acquired the India sub-continent rights for La Liga’s 380 league matches for the new season, which commenced on Friday. It is now being reported that the league’s broadcast in India will not just be limited to the social media platform, but will also be sub-licenced to a TV channel as well.

According to Mumbai Mirror, Facebook officials from Singapore and US apart from their Indian representatives are in advanced talks with a Mumbai-based sports television station to seal the deal for the same.

Given that Facebook does not charge consumers for the La Liga content, it remains to be seen how the broadcaster will air these matches.

Facebook currently streams the live matches for free to its 348 million users in the region, including 270 million in India. The company did not disclose how much it had paid to acquire the rights, which cost Sony Pictures Network $32m (€28m) the last time it was for sale in 2014. The Financial Times, however, quoted a sources suggesting that Facebook had shelled out something between €10 million and €20 million for the rights.

Facebook, which streams the matches on Facebook Watch, had opened the channels of negotiation with the television company for quite some time.

La Liga president Javier Tebas said, “We are delighted to team up with Facebook and be able to bring the action closer to all followers of La Liga in the Indian subcontinent.”

Facebook head of global live sports programming Peter Hutton said, “For Facebook, the deal is an important experiment.” It has been trying to win broadcast rights in India to major sporting events including the Indian Premier League. “We see this as a great opportunity to bring people together around world-class football and also help La Liga reach new audiences.”

The season kicked off on Friday night with matches between Girona versus Vallodolid and Real Betis versus Levante. Although these are early days in India for the live online broadcast of the games, there is an opinion that Indian fans still prefer the big screen for live action. It could be a reason why Facebook is looking to sub-licence the rights to a broadcaster.

Something has happened that has changed the world of Football forever

    1. The origin of LaLiga GENUINE
LaLiga Genuine is a groundbreaking social responsibility and integration initiative, the development of which began with the LaLiga Foundation. It consists of the creation of a league composed of teams of people with intellectual disabilities (ID).

In March 2016, LaLiga received a proposal from one of its member clubs, specifically Nastic. The aim of the project was to create a football league for member clubs in which players with intellectual disabilities would play, in order to demonstrate professional football’s firm commitment to society in terms of diversity and inclusion.

The proposal was warmly welcomed by LaLiga and approved by its Management Committee, and staff from the foundation went to work for months in conjunction with a group of clubs which already ran a team or school for people with intellectual disabilities, determining the participation requirements, format and rules of the competition through consensus and collaboration.

The project was introduced to the rest of the member clubs in April 2017, inviting them to come on board with this social integration initiative. LaLiga  GENUINE proved a hugely popular idea and the group of seven clubs initially taking part in the project grew to 18.

On 19 May 2017, LaLiga president Javier Tebas unveiled LaLiga GENUINE. When  the initiative was created, the following objectives were set:

-To make playing football normal within the ID community.
-To achieve commitment from professional football towards this socially responsible integration project.
-To reach the point where all of the LaLiga clubs have a Genuine team, thereby contributing real social value to Spanish football.

    2. Who forms part of LaLiga GENUINE?
LaLiga  GENUINE is composed of 18 professional football clubs  (17 LaLiga member clubs plus RCD Mallor- ca, who formed part of LaLiga 1|2|3 when the project began):

    ATHLETIC CLUB FUNDAZIOA
REIAL CLUB DEPORTIU ESPANYOL DE BARCELONA SAD FUNDACIÓN CLUB ATLÉTICO DE MADRID
REAL CLUB DEPORTIVO DE LA CORUÑA SAD REAL SOCIEDAD FUNDAZIOA
    LEVANTE UNIÓN DEPORTIVA EDI
CLUB DE FÚTBOL REUS DEPORTIU SAD CLUB GIMNÀSTIC DE TARRAGONA SAD REAL CLUB DEPORTIVO MALLORCA SAD* VALENCIA CLUB DE FÚTBOL SAD

UNIÓN DEPORTIVA LAS PALMAS SAD CÓRDOBA CLUB DE FÚTBOL SAD SOCIEDAD DEPORTIVA HUESCA SAD

    3. Competition
The competition will consist of eight-a-side football (seven outfield players + the goalkeeper) and each club will be allowed to name a squad of 16 players  for each round. All matches will comprise four quarters of 10 minutes each.

    Scoring system
In each match, divided into four quarters of 10 minutes  each, a maximum of one point will be awarded for each quarter won and zero points will be awarded for each quarter drawn or lost.

Additionally, for each match won, teams will earn three points in the league table, each match drawn will earn teams two points in the table and, finally, each match lost will earn one point in the table.

LaLiga Genuine will be played via a league system with six groups of three teams, such that each round will feature three matches per group.

    4. Competition values and philosophy
“At LaLiga  GENUINE, football is for EVERYONE. All players deserve the OPPORTUNITY to prove what they are capable of and to take part in the event.”

“RESPECT for yourself and your teammates is essential.  And it should be emphasised that COMPE- TING is important, but not at all costs. SHARING is more important than competing.”

The LaLiga Genuine competition  is based on values such as integration, teamwork, camaraderie and sportsmanship ahead of competitiveness. The value of fair play takes centre stage in a competition of this nature, which is why sportsmanship will be rewarded in the final tallying of the points.

All clubs will be able to earn a series of points on each matchday as a reward for fair play. These points will depend on the attitude of the coaches, the behaviour of the players, the conduct of the fans and sporting acts of fair play by players and managers. All of these aspects will be evaluated by the referee, the pitch director and the members of the opposing team at the end of each match.

    5. Profile and teams participating in LaLiga GENUINE
Teams may be single sex or mixed (male-female).  Players born before 1 October 2001 (over 16 years of age) with a certified intellectual disability of at least  33% may take part.

    6. LaLiga GENUINE microsite
To stay up to date with the latest news, as well as the results, the league standings and other content related to the competition, the LaLiga  GENUINE microsite is now online at www.laliga.es/liga-genuine

    7. Second Round in Tarragona
Tarragona is set to play host to the 2nd Round of the LaLiga  GENUINE competition  across 19, 20 and 21
January. On hand at this latest venue will be a team of 300 volunteers, who will be tasked with looking out for the well-being, comfort and security of the participants. The volunteers, who are students from the Institut Sant Pere i Sant Pau and Institut Marti Franques secondary schools, have been receiving training and guidance for some time now ahead of their involvement at the 2nd Round of the LaLiga GENUINE competition.

El Clasico among most viewed global annual sporting events, says Sony’s Rajesh Kaul

MUMBAI: Spain’s leading football league La Liga’s official broadcasters in India — Sony Pictures Networks India president, distribution and sports Rajesh Kaul has said that El Clasico was among the most viewed annual sporting events in the world and they enabled football fans who could not watch the match live at Barcelona’s Camp Nou, an opportunity to experience one of the most heavily anticipated games of the season with football legends, Luis Garcia and Frederic Kanoute.

La Liga, which launched its India office in New Delhi recently, screened in Delhi and Mumbai European-style live match between FC Barcelona & Real Madrid CF, popularly called the ‘E l Clasico.

Meanwhile, a number of Europe’s major leagues, including the Spainish La Liga, the Bundesliga in Germany, Italy’s Serie A and France’s Ligue 1, include a mid-season break. England manager Gareth Southgate has meanwhile questioned whether the introduction of a winter break in the premier league would improve fortunes in major tournaments. Southgate, who was handed a four-year contract last week having impressed the FA during four matches as interim manager, said any negative effects of England’s fixture-packed winter schedule were an “assumption”.

The lack of a winter break during the season has often been considered one of several factors contributing to England’s international failures in recent years, with some premier league managers claiming the gruelling festive period pushes players to their limits. Traditionally, English football had a busy Christmas period when teams frequently play several matches in a short period, with just a few days rest between games.

Mumbai and Delhi hosted European style fan park screenings. Garcia and Kanoute attended the events and engaged with the fans.

The match concluded in a draw with some high action in the last minute of the game. Both cities witnessed unprecedented support from the fans, as they took over the stadia to support their respective clubs.

Both clubs had a large fan following in India, and for the first time, their fans had a chance to experience the El Clasico in a fan park atmosphere with a football carnival focussed around the match. The evening included giant screens, competitions and fan engagement activities, food & beverage stalls both in Mumbai (Khar Gymkhana) and in Delhi (Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium).

La Liga president Javier Tebas said that theit aim was to take La Liga across the world, and further establish the league as one that was inclusive and is global. Both Barcelona and Real Madrid were hugely popular in India and they feel that they owe the passionate fans of the league, a chance to experience such an event.

Garcia, who played for Atletico de Madrid and FC Barcelona in La Liga, said it was a fantastic atmosphere at the screening and it was wonderful to see such enthusiasm from the crowd.

Kanoute, who attended the Mumbai screening, said he was glad to see such tremendous support for Spanish football in India, it was an evenly fought contest and was a treat for all.
