HC asks Jannat 2 producers to deposit Rs 1 mn in court

MUMBAI: The Bombay HC has asked producers Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt of Vishesh Films to deposit Rs 1 million in the court if they want to go ahead with the TV release of their film Jannat 2.

The HC also asked the producers to submit the DVD of their film to enable the judges to see for themselves whether there were any similarities between the film and a script by petitioner Kapil Chopra, which he claimed he had sent to the film‘s director Kunal Deshmukh and his 150-page script registered in 2008 by the Film Writers Association.

Commenting on Chopra‘s lawyer Rashmin Khandekar‘s contention that the script writer ought to be compensated for his efforts, the producers have denied there was any similarity between the two scripts.

When asked to comment on the matter, he promptly replied, “I can‘t say anything on this as the matter is subjudice.”

Meanwhile, the Central Board for Film Certification (CBFC) has finally given a clean chit to The Dirty Picture for telecast after nearly 100 cuts. With this, the controversial national award winning film, which had been banned from being screened on TV before 11 pm, has now got the nod for general viewing.

Sony TV had asked producers Balaji Motion Pictures to go for more cuts to ensure that the film could be telecast during prime time.

Rowdy Rathore becomes this year’s biggest weekend grosser

MUMBAI: Rowdy Rathore has made the most of its mass appeal and an exhaustive release, as many as 2,800 prints across India. The film has also marked Akshay Kumar’s reentry to the action movie genre.

The film has gone on to collect Rs 483 million in its opening weekend, making it the highest weekend grosser in this year and fifth highest so far.

Bodyguard topped with Rs 889.5 million (from five-day weekend), followed by Ra.One (Rs 803 million from 5 days), Agneepath (Rs 620 million from 4-day weekend) and Dabangg (Rs 48.8 million).

Among the other films, Department dropped beyond salvation in its second week managing to collect just Rs 7.5 million, taking its two-week total to Rs 118.5 million and making it a loss-making project.

Ishqzaade continued to hold its own and collected Rs 75.5 million in the third week, recording a handsome total of Rs 458 million.

Dangerous Ishq added Rs 4 million in its third week, taking its tally to Rs 67 million and, thus, making it a major loser.

Jannat 2 has managed to stay above the Rs 10 million mark with collections of Rs 11 million in its fourth week. It took the four-week net collections to Rs 459 million.

Vicky Donour maintained its excellent run at the box office by collecting Rs 21.5 million in its sixth week, which takes its total to Rs 404.5 million. It is set to be a hit.

A series of 7 debacles at the box office

MUMBAI: The flood of seven releases this week – Arjun, Yeh Khula Aasmaan, MLA, Rakhtbeej, Chutki Bajake, Love Recipe, Love Wrinkle Free – met with disastrous results at the box office.

Department has proved to be a debacle. After the film‘s opening weekend collection of Rs 81 million (not Rs 71 million as reported last week), the film ended the first week with Rs 111 million.

Ishaqzaade has continued to sustain well in its second week, adding Rs 125 million to take its tally to Rs 382.5 million. The third weekend collections stood at Rs 43 million, closing its 18-day net collection of Rs 425.5 million.

  • Jannat 2 collects Rs 240.5 mn in opening weekend

Jannat 2 collects Rs 240.5 mn in opening weekend

MUMBAI: Jannat 2 took a good opening on Friday but the foul words in dialogues and generally indifferent word of mouth failed to better its opening day collections.

The film collected Rs 240.5 million over the weekend. However, the collections have started showing a marked drop on Monday.

The other Friday release, Fatso, remained ordinary at the box office.

Last week’s release, Tezz, has been rejected by audiences, despite the success of lead actor Ajay Devgn’s last film Singham. Looks like it is the Desi action with a cause that works, not the mindless Western kind.

Tezz has been poorer than most films starring a popular hero in the lead. It ended its first week with Rs 147 million, after adding a meagre Rs 29 million in four days.

Vicky Donor continued to do excellent business and collected Rs 117 million in its second week to take its total to Rs 259 million.

Hate Story’s sizzling scenes failed to lure and the film just about managed to stay afloat in second week with a collection of Rs 19 million, taking its total to Rs 130 million.

Housefull 2 contributed a reasonable Rs 47 million in its fourth week. Its total box office collections stood at Rs 1.15 billion.
