Roger Moore tops with 7 James Bond portrayals

MUMBAI: As the 23rd James Bond movie Skyfall is midway in terms of shooting, we take stock of how many actors reprised the role of the secret agent and number of times.

While Roger Moore holds the record with seven potrayals of Agent 007 in films like Live and Let Die, The Man with the Golden Gun, The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker, For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy and A View to Kill, Sean Connery was one short of Moore‘s achievement (Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice and Diamonds Are Forever).

Following is Pierce Brosnan with four portrayals (GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World is Not Enough and Die Another Day) while the current Bond, Daniel Craig is doing his third Bond film (Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace and Skyfall).

But the franchise producer Michael G. Wilson wants Craig to take the record with eight Bond films.

At the bottom is Timothy Dalton who has played Bond twice (The Living Daylights, License to Kill) while George Lazenby played the action hero in just one movie On Her Majesty‘s Secret Service.

  • Ben Whishaw to play gadget maestro Q in Skyfall

Ben Whishaw to play gadget maestro Q in Skyfall

MUMBAI: Now that the casting of the James Bond film Skyfall is nearing finalization, Ben Whishaw has been cast to play gadget maestro Q in the film. Whishaw‘s role would be that of the MI6 boffin who traditionally dishes out the gadgetry to 007 for his missions.

The actor joins the cast led by Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes and Albert Finney among others, is reported to have been assigned the role for the Sam Mendes directed actioner.

It is very heartening to note that Whishaw will be the first Q in the franchise‘s history to be younger than 007. While he is 31, Craig is 43.

Q is a James Bond staple for older 007 fans as he hasn‘t appeared in a Bond adventure since 2002‘s Die Another Day when John Cleese essayed the role.

For the previous 36 years, the gadget whizz and inventor had been played by Desmond Llewelyn.

Skyfall is scheduled to release in the UK and Ireland in October 2012 and later in November the same year in November.

  • David Yates developing Who for film remake

David Yates developing Who for film remake

MUMBAI: Harry Potter director David Yates is developing The BBC television series Who one of the longest-running in British history.

The development of the film that would have no connection to the show is in the very early stages. This allows Yates to work on other projects.

Who centers on an eccentric man known as the Doctor, an alien time lord who travels space and time with the help of a machine called the TARDIS, whose exterior appears to be a small police box but is actually gigantic inside. He regularly teams up with humans to save worlds.

Various actors have played the Doctor over the show‘s run, with the explanation being that when the character is dying, he can regenerate his body into a new form. The conceit could work wonderfully in a long-running movie franchise a la James Bond or Batman.

After it ran successfully between 1963 and 1989, the show was re launched into a global franchise in 2005.

Since the movie series ended, his name has surfaced in connection with several projects. Nothing has stuck so far, as Yates is taking his time choosing his follow-up.

    Bond bids goodbye to India

MUMBAI: James Bond has bid goodbye to India even before landing here. In spite of a green signal from the Indian railways, the shoot of the British super spy film has been shelved.

“The production company, India Take One Productions, have communicated to the railway ministry that they are not shooting the next Bond film in India, and that they are looking at other places,” sources from the railway ministry have said in a statement.

The producers of the film titled Bond 23, wanted to shoot high-speed stunts on the Indian Railways. There was a request to shoot on the rooftop of a moving train, as well as inside a tunnel. However, due to security reasons, they were facing trouble getting the permission.

In spite of the Railway ministry‘s go-ahead signal, officials were worried about the production team‘s demand of “locking off the lines for seven-eight hours a day for seven days in a row”.

The crew is now likely to move to South Africa for the shoot.

MUMBAI: Giving a reprieve to thousands of James Bond fans who were dejected because the producers of the next installment of the film couldn’t get permission to shoot in India, the Information & Broadcasting (I & B) ministry has given its nod to the makers to shoot across the country.

The I&B ministry has given permission to the producers to shoot the latest Bond film Bond 23 in places like Daryaganj, Sarojini Nagar market and Ansari Road in the capital. As per the makers request, they have been given permission to shoot in North Goa with the exception of the tunnel at Dudhsagar (south-eastern railway) and Zuari rail bridge over Zuari river (Konkan railways) due to security concerns.

In Ahmedabad, the producers had sought permission to shoot near the Navagam area that is close to installations like Torrent Power limited, ONGC and IOC. The ministry has asked them to ensure that permissions are taken from the railway ministry and the state government. It is said that talks with the railway ministry were on regarding these particular locales.

Bond 23 will be the latest addition to films that have already been given permission to shoot in India. Twenty-two films including the Tom Cruise-starrer Mission Impossible, Life of Pi, Singularity and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel have already got clearance to shoot in the country.

MUMBAI: This is bad news for James Bond fans in India. Those who rejoiced with the news that the forthcoming James Bond film would be shot in India will be sad to know that the shooting of the film in the country has been stalled after the production house couldn‘t get the permission to shoot.

The makers of the film, tentatively titled Bond 23, wanted to shoot high-speed stunts on the Indian Railways. However, they could not get the permissions due to safety issues and as a result director Sam Mendes is now on the search for new locales.

However, the country‘s railways minister Dinesh Trivedi has decided to look into the matter but at the same time “I can‘t jeopardize the safety of passengers,” he said.

The shooting is likely to move to South Africa, where the producers already have permission to shoot some scenes but not until January.
