Happy New Year: Fast forward please!

MUMBAI: When Farah Khan makes a film, she does not carry with her the burden of logic or justification. This is a caper movie and since caper movies can’t be very different from each other, the film has to count on its ensemble cast and how the film is scripted and treated. On this count, the star cast cannot help much.

Shah Rukh Khan does odd jobs, including street fights, for a living. He has an axe to grind with Jackie Shroff who is a big shot in Dubai. His desire for revenge is overwhelming. Shah Rukh’s father, Anupam Kher, was an honest man who specialised in making the world’s most secure safe vaults. He had made one such rare safe for Jackie Shroff who rents it out for safekeeping of diamonds worth crores. The safe opens with a combination of a password and thumb print.

Since Kher made the safe, only his thumb impression and password worked on the safe. He wants Jackie to change it but instead Jackie drugs him and steals diamonds worth crores. Kher is framed, jailed and later commits suicide. It has been eight years since and Shah Rukh is waiting for a chance to get even.

Shah Rukh soon gets a chance to reach not only Dubai but the very hotel where Jackie operates from and where his safe is located. There is a world dance competition in Dubai in the same hotel and it is scheduled during the same period as diamonds worth Rs 300 crore will be kept in the safe while in transit.

Now, Shah Rukh needs to build a team. He gets two people, Sonu Sood and Boman Irani, in his own backyard. They both worked for Kher. Boman is an expert on safes. He finds world’s best hacker in Vivaan Shah and Abhishek Bachchan is the lookalike of Jackie’s son on whose thumb impression now the safe opens. Having found experts in the fields he needs, Shah Rukh now has one problem. None of these five can dance to save their lives and they have to win two local rounds before they qualify to represent India.

For this, they find Deepika Padukone, a bar dancer who agrees to teach them dancing. The required glamour quotient is in. Their dancing does not improve but while VIvaan hacks the online voting for the team, the judges, Vishal Dadlani and Anurag Kashyap, are blackmailed into voting for them and they qualify. However, being chosen does not change the public opinion looking at the welcome they get in Dubai with eggs and rotten tomatoes.

There are minor hitches but finally the day arrives when they commit the heist; it is also the day when the dance final is due.

As mentioned, how different can one caper film be different from another? Not much. Hence one looks forward to what follows. The disappointment starts as soon as you see the censor certificate stating the running time of the film as 179 minutes 50 seconds (this is after eight minute deletion a few days before release). Then, as Shah Rukh goes about building his team, he takes almost one hour. The characters of Boman, Sonu, Vivaan and Abhishek are introduced with demonstrations of how their talents will help towards carrying out the heist. Deepika enters after one hour into the film. Almost all sequences are stretched: Sonu’s fight in the beginning and Shah Rukh’s rooftop fight for instance, feel never-ending.

The film counts on comedy and humour to entertain but save for few occasions, comedy and humour both are childish. The romance is one-sided for almost entire length of the film. The film has three songs with appeal, of which ‘Indiawale…..’ has been overplayed but still liked as it comes at the end as a victory song. Photography is good. Heavy editing was needed. There is not much scope for histrionics. Shah Rukh gets the best lines and most footage and his usual self. However, he is surrounded taller and stronger guys around except Vivaan and that does not please the eye. Deepika has to dance and moisten her eyes on regular basis, which is it. Boman Irani is wasted. Vivaan has a pleasant look with a smiling face and acts well too. It is Abhishek who justifies the funny lines he gets, some good and some PJs. Jackie is fine.

Happy New Year is at an advantage being a solo Diwali release while, on the other hand, it is also at disadvantage because of its length which makes only four shows a day possible. Looking at the response, it will have to make the most of the holiday weekend.

    Producer: Gauri Khan.

    Director: Farah Khan.

Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Jackie Shroff, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood. Also in special appearances: Dino Morea, Prabhu Deva, Malaika Arora Khan, Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Dadlani, Sajid Khan, Anupam Kher.

  • Aamir vs Aamir

    Aamir vs Aamir

MUMBAI: Dhoom 3 proves to be a good sequel, for once. Unlike many films that simply use the name and brand, it actually carries on the characters from previous movies. Once again, Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra, two Mumbai cops are chasing after a villain, this time as a team sent to Chicago Police to solve a case of bank robberies. The reason being that the thief leaves a message in Hindi and it is assumed that he has to be an Indian.

Dhoom 3 starts off by setting a tempo for the fast-paced thriller that it promises to be with Uday and Abhishek demonstrating their fighting instincts and coordination as they take on a local basti don in Mumbai. As the action moves to Chicago, it is Aamir’s turn to show his mastery with his bike. In fact, Aamir’s arsenal of gears and gadgets would give James Bond a complex!

Aamir’s story dates back 25 years to when his father, Jackie Shroff, ran The Great Indian Circus in Chicago. The circus had not been doing too well and the local bank owner threatened to attach the circus if Shroff didn’t not manage to pay off his dues within five days; Shroff devised a new circus act which he was sure would revive his circus and pleads for a little more time. When refused, Shroff kills himself. Aamir is now grown up and ready to take revenge for his father’s death, which he calls murder. His plan is to ruin the bank, force its closure. He robs the bank’s branches one after the other. His style is that when he robs a bank, he throws a part of his loot on streets outside the bank and watches people pounce on this rain of dollars. The bank is losing reputation as well as standing in the stock market.

What makes these heists exciting is their aftermath as Aamir charts his escape in a long chase by the police with his multipurpose bike. In fact, he is techno savvy and all his robberies and escapes are executed with the help of many gadgets. It is time to get Abhishek and Uday in on the scene. It is also the time for Aamir to revive The Great Indian Circus and to get the glamour quotient on the scene. Katrina Kaif is trying to get a break into the circus but dressed like a geek, she does not impress Aamir’s assistant who keeps rejecting her. Aamir agrees to give her five minutes to prove her talent and sees a geek turn out to be a glamour doll.

    Producer: Aditya Chopra.
    Director: Vijay Krishna Acharya.
Cast: : Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif, Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra, Jackie Shroff.

Having opened up the other side of the story, that of the circus and its background, it is time to spring a surprise on the viewer; there are two Aamirs. The other one is always in the background because he suffers from autism, due to which faces communication problems and has strange mannerisms. That is the circus’s secret behind their most famous trick where Aamir enters a wooden box on stage but emerges from some other corner of the hall. (This seems lifted straight from The Prestige, which tells a similar story about a magician.)

As Abhishek and Uday try to solve the jigsaw puzzle, they spy on Aamir and follow the closet Aamir on his once a week Sunday outing. Abhishek makes sure he drives a rift between the brothers. Sadly, these plots make Abhishek look more like a villain than a supporting actor! These manoeuvres also make the proceedings very slow and insipid especially after the racy first half had set the pace. As the Aamir brothers embark on the last leg of their ‘destroy the bank’ operation, there is one more chase before the film ends by springing another surprise.

Being third in the Dhoom trilogy, some may make comparisons and feel that story/script wise D2 was better; however, this film is much more ambitious, lavishly shot and full of special effects. It has good music that is very well choreographed and the film is a visual delight. With other characters being insignificant, the film is Aamir vs Aamir talent showcase as he gets to juxtapose two totally different characters in the same frame most of the time. He is simply amazing. Katrina Kaif is the other character who gets some importance in this film and she does very well while also excelling in dance numbers. Abhishek gets no scope while Uday is the joker in the pack. Direction is competent and handling of double roles is apt. Technically the film is very good.

Dhoom 3 is set to shatter collection records and create some of its own new records. Expectations were high from the trade and especially the exhibitors and it will live up to them.

Salman secured the remake rights from his friend Subhash Ghai almost a year back and confided in him that he would start this venture with Hero.

Salman has also asked Subhash Ghai to compose the music of the new-millennium Hero. Ghai has agreed to officially turn composer. (A lot of Ghai’s music in the past was ghost-composed by him).

  • India loses its most charismatic actor Dev Anand

India loses its most charismatic actor Dev Anand

MUMBAI: With the passing away of India‘s evergreen star Dev Anand, who never showed signs of aging even at the age of 88, the country has lost it most revered actor.

With his death coming within a short span when we lost personalities like Shammi Kapoor, Bhupen Hazarika, Jagjit Singh, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and MF Husain, the country has been left with a void very difficult to fill.

True to his wish that his last rites should not be performed in India Dev Anand breathed his last at the Washington Mayfair Hotel in central London. Ironically his family has decided to keep up to his wish that his final rites be conducted quietly, away from the media glare in a distant land. His mortal remains are to be cremated in London any day after Tuesday once his wife Kalpana Kartik and daughter Devina arrive in the British capital.

In his lifetime, Dev Anand, through his banner Navketan Films made many films like Afsar, Baazi, Aandhiyan, Humsafar, Taxi Driver, House No.44, Funtoosh, Nau Do Gyarah, Kala Bazar, Hum Dono, Tere Ghar Ke Samne, Guide, Jewel Thief, Jaaneman, Lootmaar, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Ghungroo Ki Awaz, Awwal Number, Sau Crore, Mr Prime Minister and Chargesheet.

Among them, two films: Hare Rama Hare Krishna and Guide are said to be trendsetters. After its release, Hare Rama Hare Krishna assumed a cult status as it dealt with the disbanding of the Hippie culture. It aimed to have an anti-drug message and also depicted some problems associated with westernization such as divorce.

But the film that swung the fortunes of Anand‘s production house was the Vijay Anand-directed The Guide. The Guide went through many twists and turns before and during the period it was being made because the original written by RK Narayan was totally at odds with the Indian ethos and alien to the local mindset.

The film, the script of which was re-written by Vijay Anand, broke all the rules of Hindi cinema and shattered many taboos about what could and could not be shown on the big screen. This was only because of the sheer determination of both the Anand brothers who wanted to make a film that would be a landmark in all aspects.

Anand always stood up for the youth, he having given breaks to artistes like Zeenat Aman, Tina Munim, Jackie Shroff and Tabu who have made a name for themselves after that. Aamir Khan also did a film with him Awwal Number.

His enthusiasm and undying positivity won him innumerable fans the world over. In fact, this writer was initially bowled over with his warmth when five scribes from Mumbai including me accompanied him for the premiere of Mr Prime Minister in Ahmedabad a few years ago.

Right from the time we landed in Ahmedabad, to us arriving at the Drive Inn theatre, where the premiere was held, Dev Saab was very affectionate and saw to it that we enjoyed our stay with him in a local hotel.

And when he bade us goodbye, as he had to take an early flight to Mumbai for a special screening of his film at a suburban theatre, the actor producer asked his son Suniel to see that we were taken good care of till we left the city.

After that, I became quite pally with him and attended most of his press conferences. He even introduced me to Jagan Mohan of Hyderabad-based Goldstone Media, which was behind the colorization of Hum Dono.

Today,I cannot even think that he has left us for ever for just the thought of his absence, makes my heart cry.

The man who sang Main zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya bade us goodbye singing Saathi Na Koi Manzil, Chala Mujhe Leke Ai Dil, Akela Kahan,,,,.
