  • Jack Black speaks for Yahoo! on online content today

Jack Black speaks for Yahoo! on online content today

MUMBAI: The Cannes Lion Award is organised each year to hold a gathering of over 11,000 members of the global creative communications where each one is awed, inspired and educated with the latest upcoming trends engulfing the industry. At the 2013 awards on June 17, Yahoo flexed its muscle by conducting the seminar- The New World of Online Content- Appealing to the Habits of Today‘s Consumer. Hollywood‘s Kung Fu Panda, Jack Black took the stage too for Yahoo expressing his views on online content.

Black discussed that although online content is spreading across virally the stance of big screen studios is here to stay for a long time. “According to Spielberg, the studios are going to be extinct in about three years. I don‘t think that is entirely true, because there‘s always going to space for large screens. People like to get together in a communal way and watch something together on a gigantic screen and get lost in that,” Black states.

Speaking about his own internet‘s influence on his lifestyle, Black says, “My world has got so internet communicative. It‘s all about emails. I click on a link that someone sends me and I am watching a video that will lead to another video and get sucked down into wormholes. But these are very entertaining and informative.”

Sharing his views on online content, Black a master of comedy himself preferred the online content to be hilarious and trimmed down. “You don‘t really want to go too long. I found that 10 minutes is the optimal link. You throw in some good music with the comedy and it works.”

Black also appreciated Yahoo‘s creative move in the industry which was portrayed through the seminar. “Yahoo is an artist friendly site and they are going to do a lot more creative things on their site in future. They are going to be very competitive in their game. A lot of different internet organisations are throwing their hat on their ring like Netflix and Google all vying for that new real estate of entertainment delivery. And Yahoo is saying Hey! We are flexing our muscle a little bit too.”

“I don‘t think that online content is killing the Hollywood‘s leading man. There‘s going to be lots of Hollywood leading men on the line. That‘s just human nature, to go and look for the prettiest man and put him on camera, whether be it an iphone screen or a giant movie screen, because the world is tilted that way. It‘s not fair, but it‘s in the DNA,” he adds.

“People do want more control and they like the control and the choices they have watching on their iphones, on their laptops, at least I do. I don‘t go into making videos on the internet with the goal of making this viral, I don‘t even know, how you anticipate something like that. You just make something that is hilarious and you keep it tight. You trim the fat and keep it short. Today I think they found out that,” Black ends.

  • HBO lines up Republic Day special

MUMBAI: HBO’s blockbuster of the month airs on Friday 26 January at 9 pm.The “Eighth Wonder of the World” returns for the third time in this lavish film directed by Academy Award winner Peter Jackson. Thanks to unrivalled, state-of-the-art computer effects wizardry and animatronics, Jackson finally brings justice to the 1933 classic starring Fay Wray.

Scheming and bankrupt filmmaker Carl Denham (Jack Black, The Holiday, Tenacious D: The Pick Of Destiny) embarks on a desperate plan to get the studio and the creditors off his back. He relies on playwright Jack Driscoll (Academy Award® winner Adrien Brody, Hollywoodland, The Jacket) to finish the pages of a half-baked screenplay.

Denham talks starving vaudeville performer Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts, The Painted Veil, Stay) into joining them on a film shoot to a far-flung island. The adventure begins when they board a steamer, setting sail for the South Seas at Denham’s behest in their search for the mythical and eerie Skull Island, where rumors of a gargantuan monster abound. Denham believes this monster could clinch the blockbuster he so badly needs.

Upon reaching the island, Ann is abducted by a fierce tribe who make her their next offering to Kong. Kong takes the terrified Ann, but Ann’s courage and empathy soon let her see through Kong, and a bond between them begins to grow. From Manhattan to the South Seas and back, expect loads of drama, fun, and scream-inducing scenes in what movie critic Roger Ebert calls “magnificent entertainment…one of [2005’s] best films.”

  • Vh1 and Jack Black join to produce ‘Department of Acceptable Media’

Vh1 and Jack Black join to produce ‘Department of Acceptable Media’

MUMBAI: VH1, Jack Black and the team from Channel101.com have announced the launch of weekly comedy program Department of Acceptable Media.

The user-generated content and material show will be responsible for a website that will launch in early 2007 followed by a 8 episode weekly TV series premiering on VH1 in the Spring of 2007, asserts an official release.

On board as coconspirators for The Department are Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab as executive producers, who teamed with Black in 2003 to cofound Black Channel 101, a Website dedicated to screening digital shorts made by novice filmmakers in a competitive forum. Benjamin Cooley will oversee for Electric Dynamite Productions.

VH1 SVP of films and scripted series Maggie Malina, will oversee television production for VH1, along with VH1 EVP production and programming Michael Hirschorn.

Each week viewers will see new three-minute episodes of six proposed TV series, most produced by the ‘Department’ staff, some produced by web users. Viewers will then be able to vote, via the Web site www.acceptable.tv, for three of those series to return with a new episode.

The three with the least votes are cancelled and replaced by three new pilots the following week. All shows acceptable and unacceptable will be shown on the website. The best of these shorts could eventually grow to a full series on VH1, adds the release.

Actor and series producer Jack Black said, “Over the years, Dan Harmon and Rob Shrab have assembled an incredible group of young filmmakers at their internet event, Channel101.com.”

“They have mastered the art of the three-to-five minute entertainment power nugget. I am proud to be a producer of this breakthrough television series. This is the first show in TV history to be programmed by the audience,” he added.

“The formation of the Department places VH1 and its viewers again at the forefront of the user-generated content revolution. VH1 tapped into the online video explosion early with our weekly Web Junk 20 series nearly a year ago. The show found the funniest videos on the internet and shared them with our viewers — thousands of whom uploaded their own videos to us,” said MTV Networks music group and logo president entertainment Brian Graden.
