  • Universal Music releases ‘Sholay’ music to celebrate film’s 40 years

Universal Music releases ‘Sholay’ music to celebrate film’s 40 years

MUMBAI: On 14 August, Universal Music India released a special anniversary collection to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Bollywood’s legendary blockbuster – Sholay. One of the most iconic films in the industry, Sholay has been the first Indian film to have a Stereophonic soundtrack and to use the 70 mm Wide Screen format.

Over the years Sholay has become a cult classic and was the first film to enjoy a 25-week run in over 100 cinemas. In 1975, it became the highest grossing Bollywood film that year. Sholay holds a still-standing record of 60 Golden jubilees (running 50 consecutive weeks at 60 theaters) across India, and was the first film in India to celebrate a Silver jubilee (25 weeks) at over 100 theatres.

The multi-million selling soundtrack (music and dialogues) continues to sell across new formats including on line and mobile. The music from the film has captured the hearts of generations. Who can forget the iconic voices of Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Lata Mangeshkar and R D Burman crooning to classic tunes like “Mehbooba Mehbooba”, “Yeh Dosti”, “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” and “Koi Haseena” among others.

‘Sholay: The 40th Anniversary Collection’ includes over two hours of the dialogues and songs of the iconic film chronologically sequenced to take the listener through a fantastic Sholay experience.

Universal Music Group, South Asia managing director and CEO Devraj Sanyal said, “Sholay is one of the most memorable films of our time… with one of the most endearing soundtracks ever. I don’t think there is any other film in the history of Indian cinema where both the songs and the dialogues have become so iconic! And 40 years later, it gives us immense pleasure to present this Anniversary Collection – an album packed with over two hours of music and dialogues to relive the magic of Sholay. This is indeed a collector’s edition, which every cinema enthusiast out there must possess. And to top it all, the album is now available across all digital formats keeping up with changing consumer preferences.”

Additionally, Universal Music is also rolling out a multi-pronged campaign to celebrate the 40th year of the Soundtrack. DJ Suketu will be creating a five minute mashup that will introduce the music of Sholay to a whole new generation out there. Besides, riding on the film’s popular dialogues and characters, Universal Music has associated with Dubsmash where enthusiasts will have the chance to create their own videos of Gabbar, Jai, Veeru, Jailor and other casts from the film. While Big FM 92.7 – the official radio partner on the album will reach out to the films core audience through its pan-India presence. The station will run innovative campaigns around the film’s characters and it’s music.

The ‘Sholay: 40th Anniversary Collection’ will see a simultaneous worldwide digital download release on 14 August, 2015 exclusively on the iTunes store. The album will also be available across streaming partners as well as on physical formats.

  • Bombay Velvet release pushed back to avoid clash with Aamir Khan’s PK

Bombay Velvet release pushed back to avoid clash with Aamir Khan’s PK

MUMBAI: If rumors doing the rounds are to be believed, Anurag Kashyap’s dream project Bombay Velvet with Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma will not release as per the schedule.

According to Zoom, the release of Aamir Khan’s movie PK on Christmas may have lead Kashyap to postpone the release of Bombay Velvet. This decision will then call off the clash between Bollywood’s two biggest blockbusters this year.

Further, the makers of Bombay Velvet tried to convince Aamir Khan and the producers of the PK team to adjust the release dates to no avail. However, Khan denied any such news at his birthday party recently.

History says it; there have been enormous losses when two big Bollywood films clash at the box office. While in 2012, the Diwali release of Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son of Sardaar divided the box office profit, the 2013 Eid release of Chennai Express and Once Upon A Time in Mumbai Dobara’s clash brought in massive monetary loss to Ekta Kapoor. And the cherry on the cake is the fight within for maximum number of screens with the distributors! Considering this, guess the makers of Bombay Velvet have decided to hold back the release and not compete with the marketing king and perfectionist Khan at the box office.

  • The year of big movie acquisitions

The year of big movie acquisitions

    By Neeraj Vyas

If we were to reflect on the landmark moments of 2013, we could proudly say that it has been an impactful year with many highs. To start off, Indian Cinema celebrated 100 years of diverse and distinctive movies. It is a momentous occasion for the world’s largest producer of feature films with over 1200 releases a year in more than 25 languages. The casts got bigger, the designing of the film got more glamorous, the locations more exotic and the technical values are at par with anywhere else in the world.

On the flip side, most of this additional cost was passed on the broadcaster and acquisitions became hugely expensive. Surprisingly, these high costs have not deterred many broadcasters from acquiring big banner films at pre-production stage even though it is almost impossible to gauge how well the film will be received by television audiences. In future, movie deals will probably be governed by the revenue generated at the box office.

On the digital front too, the channel focused on building its brand equity and connect, apart from trying to keep strengthening the positioning of the brand. With competition within channels heating up to garner maximum viewership, the stakes attached to such upmarket films has evolved to be much more complicated than it has been in previous years. Marketing budgets for the television premiers of these films is something which has seen a huge increase with each channel upping the level of spends and trying to be distinctively innovative with each premier. For Aashiqui 2, the biggest romantic musical of the year, at MAX, we raised the bar for marketing innovations across all mediums of communication. The channel engaged with its viewers across all platforms – print, online and outdoors raising to a crescendo with the stars of the movie engaging with some lucky viewers thereby creating a much required stickiness for the brand. The main aim was to attract fresh viewers and entice older ones to watch the film again.

The digital space is constantly evolving and our endeavour is to customise everything we do on the digital platform. Some of the innovations on the social platform were the IPL Jhumping Jhapak app. Also, MAX was the first Hindi movie channel to integrate live tweets on Jab Tak Hai Jaan.

From an overall industry perspective, I feel the highpoint was the rollout of digitisation across the country in phases. Although much delayed and slower than anticipated, it opened out a whole new opportunity for channels to increase shelf space. The proposed ad cap pushed many networks to launch new channels to adequately maximise their inventory supply. At MAX, our focus was to consciously deliver better films and energise the brand to engage with our loyal viewers.

Looking forward, the film channels will also need to re-evaluate the way advertising is sold so that the true value is gained in return for the delivery of this product to large chunks of audiences.

  • Katrina ready to sizzle with multiple projects

Katrina ready to sizzle with multiple projects

MUMBAI: She has created waves on-screen every time with her performance. Katrina Kaif, who has been voted the hottest actress four years in a row, is set to rule again with her upcoming release Dhoom 3.

Her last release Jab Tak Hai Jaan was one of the biggest successes of the year. Now, the actress is set to sizzle in Dhoom 3. The title song Dhoom Machale, the teaser of which was released recently, is already trending.

She has temperatures soaring with the song that is glamorously picturised on the actress. Sporting edgy couture be it the neon pink romper, skimming corsets and bustiers and knee high boots, Katrina is looking her best.

That’s not all, the actress also has a string of back to back releases in the coming year, including the action-romance Bang Bang with Hrithik Roshan, Kabir Khan’s gritty drama Phantom with Saif Ali Khan and Fitoor, a timeless love story.

A trade source says, “Katrina Kaif is making conscious decisions when it comes to her films stressing on quality and not quantity. She has created a unique space for her in the industry. Her releases next year too are amongst the most awaited. Her growth has been unprecedented and she has constantly proved with every film that she is here to stay.”

  • ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ and ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ to release in Romania

‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ and ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ to release in Romania

MUMBAI: Yash Chopra’s last gesture of love is all set to release in Romania. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, Jab Tak Hai Jaan will release in Romania with subtitles on 18 October. The blockbuster film had a worldwide release on 13 November 2012.

This benchmark release will be followed by another treat for Romanian audiences – the release of one more YRF historic blockbuster – Ek Tha Tiger. Starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif in lead roles, the film has been directed by Kabir Khan.

Yash Raj Films continues to make waves all over the world with its films reaching newer heights with each passing day.

  • Chennai Express: This train can be boarded just once

Chennai Express: This train can be boarded just once

MUMBAI: Shah Rukh Khan, most preferred in romantic films, of which he may have done only a few, is finding it hard to find a slot lately. He has tried his hand at multiple genres recently: Ra.One, a super hero film; Don 2, an action-for-action’s-sake film; Jab Tak Hai Jaan, where he plays a larger than life bomb expert. Somehow, he does not seem to have found the right fit. Chennai Express is the outcome of this confusing situation as the film can’t define its genre even after it has run through 143 minutes. Is it a comedy, a road movie, an action movie or a romance? And is it a Hindi or a Tamil movie?

Shah Rukh Khan’s halwai grandfather has passed away and his last wish is that his grandson should immerse his ashes in the sea at Rameshwaram. However, Khan and his friends had plans to holiday in Goa. This assignment comes as a hurdle in their plans. However, Khan’s friends convince him that even if he immersed the ashes at Goa, they would finally end up reaching the sea at Rameshwaram! This is the first warning of what is to come. Since the grandmother plans to see off Khan at the station, he plans to take a south bound train, get off at the first station nearby and join his friends for a road trip to Goa.

Khan spots Deepika Padukone running to catch the train which has started moving and helps her in. He also helps four mean and scary looking guys board the running train. It turns out that Deepika, who is running away from her father who is in a village near Chennai, catches a train going towards her father. The four goons Khan helped board the train are her father’s henchmen, chasing her to take her back to her village. Her father, who is the local don, plans to marry her off to a strongman from another village, Nikitin Dheer against her wishes. That would help him extend his power further.

Producers: Gauri Khan, Karim Morani, Ronnie Screwvala, Siddharth Roy Kapoor.

    Director: Rohit Shetty.
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Nikitin Dheer, Sathyaraj, Manorama, Kamini Kaushal, Lekh Tandon.

Deepika blames Khan for her problem. He decides to help her but his attempts are thwarted by the foursome. They are a dangerous lot which they demonstrate first by throwing away Khan’s costly cell phone from the train and later by throwing out the TC. Deepika and Khan communicate through Hindi film songs as if they are singing a duet; the goons couldn’t care less since the things are very much under their control.

Finally, they arrive at her village. But since it is not a scheduled stop, the goons pull the chain and out there, to welcome the boss’ daughter, is a crowd of hundreds. Khan could have continued with his journey but, for whatever reason, he also decides to tag along! Since Deepika does not want to marry Dheer, she introduces Khan as the guy she loves and plans to marry. The son-in-law to be is cheered by the villagers. But Dheer is not the kind to give in so easily. He challenges Khan to a fight the next morning. This is one giant problem for Khan for that is how Dheer compares to Khan in physique. The only way to survive is to escape.

Khan and Deepika plan to escape before the duel starts, but Khan spoils the plan by getting drunk. Still, he steals a bike and manages to get away, only to crash near a police station. The Sikh cop, Mukesh Trivedi, hides him in a safe place which, when he wakes up, turns out to be a smugglers’ dhow heading towards Sri Lanka. Soon the dhow is raided and Khan taken back to the village he had run from.

It is her wedding day when, once again, Khan and Deepika escape, this time to fall in love for real. Khan wants to take her honourably and comes back to her village, to the don, the mob and Dheer. In a sudden burst of enthusiasm he beats up all the goons, armed as well as unarmed and, finally, also takes on Dheer!

Chennai Express is a poor story idea badly developed. The script has no substance and a lot of footage is filled with nothing happening or, in second half, by crowding the footage with three songs almost back-to-back. Except at two or three places, the comedy is pathetic and the jokes are all decades-old PJs. The music score is generally no help and the only well tuned song is Titli… In fact, some songs sound like they have been dubbed from Tamil songs.

The Rohit Shetty touch is missing here; there is not much entertainment to be found, even of the mindless variety. Photography is good. Dialogue is uninspiring. A lot of Tamil is used in dialogue without sub titles which is very curious: there is not much to understand in this film but this shows a disregard for the audience. Editing is slack.

Deepika shines and is the only worthy performer in the film. Khan, sad to say, resorts to buffoonery when not overacting; his fans expect better. Dheer is aptly sinister.

Chennai Express may not generate good word of mouth but, thanks to the Eid weekend release at 3500 screens with multiplexes running 12 to 16 shows, it is sure to amass bumper weekend collections and help avoid a big setback.

  • Deepika Padukone to replace Katrina Kaif in Dostana 2?

Deepika Padukone to replace Katrina Kaif in Dostana 2?

MUMBAI: The fight between the two actors – Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif – goes a long way back. With earlier Deepika bagging Happy New Year from Katrina, there are rumours that the Chennai Express star has ousted Jab Tak Hai Jaan babe from the sequel of Dostana as well.

The Tarun Mansukhani’s Dostana 2 will star John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan. However, as per the earlier rumours, Katrina was to step into Priynaka Chopra’s shoes for the sequel. But DP’s successful run at the box-office this year has made her a hot favourite among directors and producers.

  • Khiladi 786 recovers from opening day lull

Khiladi 786 recovers from opening day lull

MUMBAI: Two indistinct films, Myoho and Cigarette Ki Tarah, released last Friday with limited engagement. Due to lack of audience support, the shows had to be cancelled and screenings replaced with other features at most places.

Khiladi 786, carrying forward the Akshay Kumar Khiladi brand, had a weak first day but made up over Saturday and Sunday and maintained well at single screens to end its first week at Rs 472 million. However, the long term position for the film is average at best.

Talaash sustained in its second week thanks to Aamir Khan fans who need to watch his film once. The film collected Rs 169 million standing up to mass appealing Khiladi 786 and taking its two-week total to Rs 849.6 million.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan collected Rs 4.2 million in its fourth week just about marking the end of its run. Its 31-day total collection stood at Rs 1.21 billion.

Son Of Sardar ran out of steam in its fourth week collecting a symbolic Rs 1.5 million and coming to the end of its run with a total of Rs 1.04 billion.

Dabangg 2, the most awaited film of the year, hits 21 December to cash in on the super success of Dabangg and the Christmas week holidays. With big names and film not living up to expectation in last couple of months, the public‘s enthusiasm for the film is in measured tones. However, the exhibitors at single screens as well as multiplexes are very hopeful of the film what with Salman Khan riding at the pinnacle at present! The film is getting lucrative terms in the form of minimum guarantees (MGs) and advances from the theatres.
