Double Award Success at IBC2024 for nxtedition

nxtedition is proud to announce its remarkable success at IBC2024, having been recognised with two industry awards. The company received the IABM BaM Award in the Create category and was also named a TVBEurope Best of Show winner for its XR/Mixed Reality Studio Gallery Control. These accolades highlight nxtedition’s ongoing commitment to innovation and evolution in the broadcast industry.

The IABM BaM Award, known as a ‘#BaMMY’, celebrates innovation and creative solutions in media technology. nxtedition’s achievement in the Create category was praised by the IABM judges, who remarked:

“The word ‘groundbreaking’ appears in a lot of submissions for awards, but this truly is a groundbreaking product”

“For many years people have tried to reduce a control room to the size of a piece of paper. Is this the product that finally does it?”

“This is a really astonishing piece of kit, which I think is an outstanding and radical development.”

nxtedition also received the TVBEurope Best of Show award for its XR/Mixed Reality Studio Gallery Control. These awards recognise outstanding products and solutions that were exhibited at IBC2024. They are judged by an independent panel of experts, including industry professionals and TVBEurope editorial staff, based on criteria such as innovation, performance, and cost-effectiveness. nxtedition’s recognition in this category reflects its dedication to delivering advanced broadcast solutions that meet the evolving needs of the industry.

nxtedition played a key role in developing the XR/MR Studio Gallery Control as part of the IBC Accelerator project, “Evolution of the Control Room – Leveraging XR, Voice, AI & HTML-Based Graphics Solutions.” This project was a collaboration with Al Jazeera, BBC, ITN, Transmixer, Cuez, Loopic, SPX Graphics and many more. The accelerator perfectly aligned with nxtedition’s consolidated approach, showcasing how emerging technologies can reshape broadcast control. During the presentation, Adam Leah, Creative Director at nxtedition demonstrated the system live, remotely controlling a studio in Sweden using just a Meta Quest 3 and an iPad, which was met with great enthusiasm and praise.

IBC2024 was a resounding success for the company, marked not only by these award wins but also by a record number of visitors to the stand. Roger Persson of nxtedition commented, “IBC2024 allowed us to showcase how our single, unified platform can genuinely change the way newsrooms work. The level of interest we received confirms that the industry is looking for more integrated, efficient solutions like ours.”

  • RTS crowns CNN International news channel of the year

RTS crowns CNN International news channel of the year

MUMBAI: Last night at the Royal Television Society (RTS) Awards, CNN International was crowned News Channel of the Year for the second year running beating Sky News and the BBC News Channel, plus won the coveted Best News Coverage – International category for its outstanding reporting of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines beating ITN and BBC One.

The network’s coverage of news events such as the Westgate Mall siege in Nairobi, the struggle for power in Egypt, the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, the on-going crisis in Syria, and the rise of extremism in the former Soviet republic of Dagestan, won over the RTS jury.

Tony Maddox, Executive Vice President of CNN International, said: “To win News Channel of the Year for the second year running, against some strong submissions from our peers, is a very special honour. Our profession is being tested today more than ever before, but the bravery, determination, skill and fortitude of my colleagues around the world has been unwavering.

“Our coverage of Typhoon Haiyan was exemplary from start to finish. Our crews showed enormous bravery as well as great sensitivity on what was both a physically gruelling, emotionally draining, and very important assignment. I’m delighted that their efforts have been recognised here, and I couldn’t be more proud of their work.”

These two awards are the latest recognition of CNN International’s editorial strength. The channel was recently named Cable & Satellite Channel of the Year at the Asian Television Awards, and had a strong showing in the Emmys, FPA Awards, Peabody Awards and the Overseas Press Awards. CNN is also the number one international TV news channel according to all major media surveys across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, the Asia Pacific region and Latin America.

  • Al Jazeera International sees delay in launch

Al Jazeera International sees delay in launch

MUMBAI: The proposed English news and current affairs channel Al Jazeera International has delayed the launch of the channel from April to September at the earliest.

The channel an offshoot of the Qatar-based Arabic network has pushed the launch date on account of series of constructions and technical glitches at its four centres in London, Doha, Kuala Lumpur and Washington, according to The Guardian.

The channel is said to be still experiencing problems and thus, the launch has now been stated to be early September.

The executives of the channel are said to be increasingly fed up with the slow pace of progress. “Staff are extremely frustrated, as is the management, who are tearing their hair out at the inefficiency of support staff,” said a source to the publication The Guardian.

The bosses at the English-language service were concerned about “meddling” from Al-Jazeera’s Arabic owners, who are thought to be worried the new channel could end up a “watered down version of the BBC or CNN” and a “damp squib managed by non-Muslim westerners”.

Although the broadcaster has inked a deal with the Sky Digital in UK, it is however finding difficulties in striking deals in the key American market.

The Al-Jazeera spokeswoman speaking to The Guardian said that the broadcaster was not releasing an official launch date. However, she said the channel’s management had a particular date towards which they were working.

“They are waiting on their technical requirements to be fulfilled,” she said.

CNN and BCC are the main competitors to the Al-Jazeera International targeting the English-language news audiences, particularly in its coverage of the Middle East.

The broadcaster has already roped in high-profile personalities, including Sir David Frost, former CNN Riz Khan, former CNN Rageh Omaar, Channel Five news presenter Barbara Serra for the London newsroom, and as well as other journalists from Sky, ITN and elsewhere.

Recently, the channel hired a host of presenters for sports coverage.

Al-Jazeera launched in Qatar in November 1996, bankrolled by the Emir of Qatar, but came to international prominence during the US attack on Afghanistan in 2001 when it was the only foreign broadcaster in Kabul.

Al-Jazeera, which has been credited with changing the face of Arab television news, has faced criticism from the US as well as several Arab states. The channel is always surrounded by controversies by screening messages from the most-wanted man Osama bin Laden, the leader of the terrorist group Al-Qaida.

The British Broadcasting Corporation has announced plans to set up its own Arabic news channel next year and has roped in former Al-Jazeera executive Salah Negm as news editor.

  • Sky News’ head Nick Pollard to quit in September

Sky News’ head Nick Pollard to quit in September

MUMBAI: Sky News’ head Nick Pollard who ran the network for a decade is set to quit in September. He will be succeeded by the current executive editor John Ryley as the head of the network.

The announcement of Pollard’s opting to leave the organisation comes eight months after the channel’s expensive re-launch last October, inform media reports.

In January Pollard admitted that recent months had been “the toughest time in Sky News history” after viewers reacted negatively to the relaunch, which failed to attract new viewers.

Under his leadership, Sky News was recognised for its live reporting from the field of events such as the Asian tsunami, the Iraq War and the Kosovo crisis when the channel was the first to provide live pictures from inside Kosovo on liberation day.

Since the October relaunch, Sky has featured less rolling news and more distinct programmes plus the introduction of new presenters such as Eamon Holmes and James Rubin.

Before joining Sky as head of news in 1996, Pollard spent 13 years at ITN where he was executive producer of News at Ten. He began his career as a local newspaper journalist in 1968, before moving to the BBC where he remained until 1980.
