    ITF claims good ratings for Davis Cup, Fed Cup

    MUMBAI: The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has announced that the Davis Cup and Fed Cup ties played in September 2005 recorded good TV ratings around the world, with the doubles matches leading the way. In India Zee Sports has the rights for the events.

    France Television, host broadcaster of the France vs Russia Fed Cup Final played on Roland Garros Philippe Chatrier court, averaged a 20 per cent market share throughout the weekend (16-17 September 2005). The deciding doubles match on the Sunday averaged over 27 per cent of the market share and peaked with over six million viewers. Sport+ complimented the domestic coverage raising the total coverage in France to over 35 hours.

    In Russia, RTR and NTV+ shared coverage of the final, dedicating over 30 hours of live and replayed transmissions. The final was broadcast in 68 countries including India, Spain, Belgium, the UK, US and Japan.

    The Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group Semifinals (23-25 September 2005) also registered very good TV figures. HRT, the host broadcaster of the semifinal between Croatia and Russia, maintained the figures it had for previous rounds with over 40 per cent of the market share during Saturdays exciting doubles match, which went to five sets. RTR and NTV shared coverage of the tie in Russia, broadcasting over 40 hours of live, delayed and replayed coverage. The tie was shown in 38 countries.

    Slovak TV, host broadcaster of the other semifinal between Slovak Republic and Argentina, recorded over 20 per cent of the market share during the three days of competition. TYC Sports showed the tie on a Pan Latin-American platform,bringing the total reach for this tie to 29 countries.

    The Davis Cup World Group Play-offs, played the same weekend of the semifinals, also registered strong figures. SRG-SSR recorded a 34 per cent market share during the doubles match of the Switzerland vs Great Britain tie, while the BBC averaged over 15 per cent for the same match.

    Strong results were also apparent for TVN Chile, with an average of over 36 per cent market share during the doubles match of the Chile vs Pakistan tie. Austrias ORF recorded 19 per cent during the deciding rubber against Ecuador. Belgiums RTBF held a 16 per cent share during the doubles match. In the Zonal qualifying events, Uruguays Canal 4 registered a 60 per cent market share during the deciding match against Brazil.

    MUMBAI: The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has announced that the recent Davis Cup for men by BNP Paribas and Federation Cup for women finals reached over 175 countries in all five continents through television.

    Since sport is about national pride it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Spaniards tuned in large numbers to watch Spain defeat the US in the Davis Cup Final The event took place in Seville from 3-5 December. In India the tournament aired on Doordarshan.

    The host broadcaster TVE dedicated over 45 hours with different programmes to cover the event. While over three million viewers followed the first two singles matches on the second channel La 2, the Bryan Brothers’ victory the following day in the doubles match was followed by more than three million viewers with market shares of 26.7 per cent on the first channel La Primera.

    The deciding fourth rubber on Sunday between Carlos Moyá and Andy Roddick saw 3.1 million viewers flocking to La Primera. The channel thus notched up a 43.8 per cent market share. This is a significant increase from the 36.9 per cent share registered in the fourth match of the Davis Cup final four years ago when Spain won the event for the first time.

    The ITF has added that in the always-competitive US market ESPN registered good figures despite the time difference and its delayed coverage of the Final. Among the 25 international broadcasters UK’s BskyB and Russian’s NTV Plus dedicated over 20 hours each while Australia, the 2003 champion, could watch over 30 hours thanks to Fox Sports.

    ITF claims promising TV figures for Davis Cup

    MUMBAI: The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has announced that the eight first round ties of the 2004 Davis Cup competition attracted encouraging television numbers from around the world. The event took place from 7-9 February.

     
    ITF’s television department was able to secure coverage of the competiton in 15 of the 16 World Group nations, and the selected ‘feature’ tie – Czech Republic v Spain – was distributed across Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas. In India, the Davis Cup action airs on DD Sports.

    Spain’s pubcaster TVE registered around 1.5 million viewers during the fifth and deciding rubber between Radek Stepanek and Rafael Nadal in the Spain v Czech Republic tie, and averaged over one million viewers for the three days. Not surprisingly, the Aussies tuned in large numbers to watch their side take on Sweden in Adelaide. The event aired on Channel 7. The crucial doubles rubber on Saturday between Wayne Arthurs/Todd Woodbridge and Jonas Bjorkman/Joachim Johansson attracted a 64 per cent and 56 per cent market share in Melbourne and Sydney respectively.

    Holland’s NOS gained a very healthy 59.7 per cent market share during its highlights transmission of the Netherlands vs Canada tie. An official release adds that viewership of this round of the competition was not solely restricted to World Group action, with the ITF also securing promising coverage for the Zonal groups. TVN in Chile welcomed a 30 per cent market share average during its coverage of the Peru v Chile Americas Zone Group I tie.

    A Davis Cup highlights programme, produced by TWI for the first time, was also sold to 16 broadcasters. Sports programmes TransWorld Sport and Gillette World Sports Special included Davis Cup material in their programming.

    NEW YORK: The International Tennis Federation (ITF) and broadband and mobile sports provider Sportev have announced the launch of DavisCup.tv.

    The comprehensive broadband offering covers action from the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group. For the first time ever, tennis fans have the chance to view Davis Cup footage on the web. In India national broadcaster Doordarshan showcases Davis cup action.

    An official release informs that registered users will be given exclusive access to match highlights from the first round, quarterfinals, semifinals and final of the 2003 competition. In addition, post match player interviews will be available, adding to the viewer experience. Users will also be able to access highlights footage from the final, which will be played at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia from 28-30 November 2003. The highlights will be available – as all footage will be in future 24 hours after the conclusion of play.

    ITF executive director, commercial, Jan Menneken added, “We are delighted to partner with Sportev in this brand new initiative that will add another dimension to our online offering to tennis fans around the world. We believe this application to be a significant first step towards the development of our broadband video strategy.”
