  • ITC Vivel leads conversation on gender equality

ITC Vivel leads conversation on gender equality

MUMBAI: ITC Vivel believes that for a more equal society, awareness of legal rights is the first step towards empowering and protecting women. It firmly believes that no one should have to compromise on their dignity, be discriminated against or denied their rights as provided by law. As part of its brand philosophy, Vivel launched a website designed for a simplified understanding of laws around women’s rights. Compiled in an FAQ format and available in English and Hindi language, Vivel seeks to empower women and enable self-action.

In the last six months, Vivel's ‘Know Your Rights’ initiative has reached more than 250 colleges and 30,000 students through active workshops across the country.  Vivel hopes to inspire a collective of young individuals to be equality champions and empower others for a more gender-equal India through this outreach.

In the same vein, ITC Vivel ‘Ab Samjhauta Nahin’ hosted a power-packed panel discussion and workshop organised in partnership with the CII IWN. Speaking on the panel were Supreme Court lawyer Karuna Nundy, BJP Delhi spokesperson and vice president Shazia Ilmi, IPS 2018, 71 RR, Himachal Pradesh Cadre Ilma Afroz Oxfam International gender justice campaigner Gopika Bashi, and ITC Personal Care Division head personal wash category Subhash Balar. The conversation revolved around shifting the ‘norm’ to the ‘normal’, rising up against labels, the externalities of the person and championing change.

Karuna Nundy said, “By bringing real and concrete knowledge of legal rights to over 600 colleges – that’s at least  1 lakh people – we seek to create a tidal wave of people who are aware of their rights, claiming these rights and so forcing the system to serve its citizens. Their relationships with family, romantic partners and friends are also transforming in the process, becoming more equal. This is becoming a movement, not just by our efforts with ITC Vivel’s Ab Samjhauta Nahin, but also other efforts. We need to build on this, and fast – it is only by a circular process of claiming and exercising rights that the channel between citizens and state will become continuous and smooth.”

As part of the legal rights awareness initiative, Vivel in collaboration with Kommune introduced ‘Knock Knock’ with spoken-word poet Sainee Raj.  In her piece Sainee she talks about breaking the silence and celebrating our rights. Touching upon the extremely relevant and sensitive issue of cyber security for women, she urges us to stop waiting for the world to change and start being the change ourselves.

MUMBAI: This ‘World Equality Day’ ITC Vivel, under its #AbSamjhautaNahin, campaign has partnered with Kubbra Sait for an interesting campaign. The monologue is written by Sait herself and the video is conceptualised and produced by Kommune.

With the campaign, ITC Vivel calls for women to ‘uncondition’ themselves – To question time-worn mindsets and the social fabric that tends to stereotype. All in hope to inspire a collective of young individuals to be equality champions and empower others for a more gender-equal India.

The video is designed to celebrate and educate the people about gender equality with the firm belief that no one should have to compromise on their dignity or be discriminated against.

Blush and ITC Vivel collaborates with Pad Man present

health at immense risk during menstruation. From using mud & ash to dirty clothes, menstrual hygiene takes a backseat due to financial constraints and inaccessibility to clean products.

Culture Machine’s digital channel ‘Blush’ along with ITC’s Vivel collaborated with the cast of Pad Man to create a video titled ‘#AbSamjhautaNahin – The Shopping List’. An eye opening, spoken word piece, listing alternatives to sanitary pads that women in most parts of the country resort to during periods. What may seem like an innocuous list of household items on a shopping list for some, is unfortunately a de facto substitute to hygienic sanitary napkins for a majority of women in India.  Right from old & dirty rags to unsafe objects like ash, coconut husk and hay, Sonam Kapoor & Akshay Kumar bring attention to the grave situation of menstrual hygiene in the country. The video concludes with the lead actors requesting viewers to donate a minimum of Rs. 400 to The Vatsalya Foundation in order to facilitate a year-round availability of sanitary pads to women in various parts of the country.

Rooted in its core brand philosophy Ab Samjhauta Nahin, Vivel, continues to empower and educate women to challenge stereotypes and help enable self-action. It firmly believes that no one should have to compromise on their dignity or be discriminated against. Vivel actively stands in support of equality and believes that for a more equal life, awareness and education is the first step to empowerment. This is reflected in the recent launch of www.absamjhautanahin.com, a website designed for a simplified understanding of laws and rights that women should be aware of. Vivel Ab Samjhauta Nahin is working relentlessly towards women empowerment with its continued support to organisations like Apne Aap Women Worldwide fighting to end sex trafficking of women and girls and Azad Foundation to help empower women feminist leaders at the grassroots level.

Culture Machine’s digital channel ‘Blush’ that stirred a debate with the release of a video around First Day of Period in the past says, “Blush Originals is reviving the conversation on menstruation.  But this time, the purpose is much larger, and the canvas, bigger.  We’d like to take the conversation beyond metros and air-conditioned offices.  Vivel with its brand philosophy of Ab Samjhauta Nahin enables purpose and a deep rooted conviction to make changes at the grassroots level. This collaboration brings together some of the most influential voices to take the conversation about menstrual hygiene, methods of managing menstruation, cost of sanitary pads, ease of availability, taboos and habits, lifestyle choices and overall well-being to the masses. Conversations that lead to awareness, awareness that leads to knowing one’s rights, knowing that leads to action – and there’s only one action, that needs to be achieved: a perfect menstrual health card for this country.”

The Vatsalya Foundation, Director, Ms. Swathi Mukherjee, comments, “Inaccessibility to sanitary pads is one of the primary reasons for young girls and women to drop out of schools and work, respectively. The Vatsalya Foundation is focused on needs of our young women. It encourages a performance based livelihood with a dual purpose of enabling access and empowering women through financial independence. We are glad that menstrual hygiene is now set to become mainstream with a feature film focused on the issue and brands like Vivel supporting the initiative. With the funds raised through this video, we will be purchasing and distributing Sakhi Pads to underprivileged women.”

  • Ad budgets halved ahead of Durga Puja

Ad budgets halved ahead of Durga Puja

KOLKATA: Even as the Bengali community prepares to welcome Goddess Durga, the economic recession seems to have dampened Kolkata’s festive fervour.
Advertising budgets have been slashed to half their size while companies are opting for short-term campaigns spanning not more than 15 days in a bid to save the pennies. Brands are likely to divert funds from large-scale advertising campaigns to quick-win promotions, including coupons and POS discounts so as to attract cash-strapped customers.

Sampark Adverting & Media marketing head Kalyan Brata Ghosh agrees that companies are increasingly opting for short-term campaigns. While Inter Action founder Pranatar Chaudhuri says: “The budget is very low. The biggest spender ITC Vivel is almost non-existent. Vodafone has not yet launched its Puja campaign as normally, the telecom service provider starts the campaign three to four weeks before.”

Chaudhuri adds that clients are optimising costs. For instance, both Berger and Asian Paints haven’t rolled out anything major yet. With the Pujas starting from today, the mood is rather low-key.

“We are selling off space at half the cost so that hoardings do not go blank and we earn something during tough times,” a source from an outdoor media agency reveals.

“Pujas are getting hit. Puja committees have lost clients. Money market companies, which, till last year, either spent a huge amount on the Puja campaigns or donated to big Puja committees have almost contributed nil this year,” says a media planner.

Some brands are even back-tracking as no one is willing to spend. “One of my clients got all the plans made and then backed out even when we quoted the cheapest rates,” says a source from a city-based medium-sized outdoor agency.

Meanwhile Sistema Shyam TeleServices, which provides telecom services under the MTS brand, has announced the launch of the MTS Digital Utsav campaign, near to the Durga Puja celebrations. The campaign has been specially designed to cash in on the power of the digital medium for two special initiatives: the MTS Street Food Festival and MTS Digital Pujo Awards, says an SSTL release.

Ghosh points out that most agencies have kept client campaigns under wraps and will unveil them once people start pandal hopping during the Puja.
