  • ‘Apprentice’ producers sue Israeli TV station

MUMBAI: The producers of the business based reality show The Apprentice have sued an Israeli TV station for stealing their idea. In India The Apprentice airs on Star World.

The suit has been filed in Tel Aviv by Fremantle Media and Mark Burnett Productions against Israeli broadcaster Channel 2 franchisee Keshet Broadcasting. The demand is that production be stoped on the reality show The Ambassador

The suit alleges that The Ambassador copies a lot from The Apprentice. The promotions for the Israeli show use the hands of real-estate magnate Donald Trump who hosts The Apprentice. The suit states, “The format includes all the components and creates the overall look and feel of The Apprentice.”

In The Ambassador 14 contestants are forced to present Israel in the best light in front of hostile international audiences – including the Cambridge University Union in England. A panel of judges throws one person thrown off the show each week. The winner gets a position with a US Jewish organisation.

In The Apprentice contestants perform business-related challenges. Uttering the famous line “You’re fired” Trump gets rid of one contestant at the end of each episode.

  • Libyans ecstatic over Arab ‘Idol’ outcome

Libyans ecstatic over Arab ‘Idol’ outcome

MUMBAI: The ‘Idol’ phenomenon is making waves all over the world. While the Indian Idol from Sony Entertainment Television’s stable has kicked off its ground activities in various Indian cities, the Middle East’s Arab Idol – Super Star has just been announced, however, not without its share of controversies.

The two finalists for the Super Star were a Libyan dental student – Ayman al-Attar and a Palestinian singer – Amar Hassan, of whom Attar emerged the winner. While the Libyans are ecstatic with the outcome, some Palestinians ascribed their defeat to underhand tactics by the Libyan leader, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, who allegedly boosted his contestant’s vote by allowing free telephone calls in Libya.

Palestinians are alleging that Gaddafi was instrumental in backing a costly nationwide publicity campaign and also arranged for free phone calls for Libyans who wanted to vote.

The poll of almost six million was won by al-Attar 54 percent to 46 percent. According to a report published in The Jerusalem Post, Hassan’s success was viewed as a barometer of Arab support for the Palestinians, after the Palestinian Authority endorsed him as an important symbol of the struggle against Israel. Official celebrations planned across the territories were immediately cancelled when Hassan lost, to widespread local disbelief. Many said they expected him to win the title, not only because he was a better singer, but because Arab viewers would sympathise with him as a Palestinian struggling against Israel.

According to another media report, one Palestinian computer expert said that he had devised a shortcut that would allow easy multiple voting for Ammar Hasan.

Hassan was among the 6,000 aspiring singers who had auditioned for “Super Star”, of whom 17 were chosen. Out of the 17, two were chosen for the final and deciding round.

On the other hand, some Palestinian militants objected to the hoopla that was spun around the talent hunt. Islamic groups like the militant Hamas said that it distracted the public from a two-week-old hunger strike by some 2,000 Palestinian prisoners demanding better conditions in Israeli jails.

Parmeet Sethi nominated for best actor by the Israeli Film Academy

MUMBAI: Art knows no boundaries. Contrary to the rules of the academy which awards only Israeli talent, Parmeet Sethi (of Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin fame) has been nominated in the best actor category for Israeli Film Academy awards for his pivotal role in the Israeli film Sof Haolam Shmola (At the End of the World and Left).

Sethi’s name has been recommended by the producer of the film Dudi Zilber.

The film deals with interactions between new immigrants from India and Morocco, placed in a development township. Sethi plays an Indian Jew who goes to Israel dreaming about a very rosy future but meets with lots of hardships, before he eventually settles down.

When contacted last evening, Sethi had just received the news and said he was thrilled to be a part of the nomination list. “I hope I get the award. I am keeping my fingers crossed.”

Twenty-three films have entered the competition so far and some 700 members of the Academy will shortlist the nominations in 13 different categories for the 27 September award ceremony. In case of not being able to make it to the grand finale. “I can’t say anything at the moment. My television and film assignments bind me here. Let’s see how I am placed on D-day,” Sethi added.

Currently, Sethi is doing Sony Entertainment Television’s ‘Jassi…’, Sahara Manoranjan’s Ruby Duby Hub Dub and films like the English-Punjabi bilingual Political Asylum (with Juhi Chawla and Gurdas Mann) and (late) Bunty Soorma’s incomplete film Humko Tumse Pyaar Hai’, which is now being completed by Vikram Bhatt.
