  • The rise of the Zombies at Comic Con

The rise of the Zombies at Comic Con

MUMBAI: The recently concluded Mumbai Film and Comics Convention (MFCC) aka Comic Con proved to be a crowd-puller, much like its predecessor last year.

Held over two days 21 and 22 December at the Goregaon Exhibition Centre in Mumbai, Comic Con had Wonderbai, our very own ‘desi’ interpretation of popular comic Wonder Woman as its mascot.

Inside, visitors were greeted by life-size statues of Marvel Comics’ superheroes Iron Man and The Hulk in their ‘signature’ poses.

Apart from world-renowned names like Marvel Comics and DC Comics, the event was also marked by the presence of indigenous creative entities such as Graphicurry, Manta Ray and Wontolla.

One of the highlights was the promotion of ‘Zombie Rising: Volume I’, graphic novel and prequel to India’s first original zombie film ‘Rise of the Zombie’ by actor, co-director and 9XO channel head Luke Kenny and writer and co-director Devika Singh.

While also announcing that the sequel to ‘Rise of the Zombie’ is “in the works”, Kenny said: “The prequel comic, the film, and an upcoming video game aim to serve as a new vision to a western genre and Indianising it. It is the Comic Con audience that we are aiming at and not necessarily the Bollywood audience. Presenting it to the public at a time when ‘The Walking Dead’ (a hit US TV series about zombies) is at the peak of its popularity is an added advantage.”

Singh on her part said: “With a limited audience for this genre, a majority of the audience has to be educated before they can acquire a taste for Zombie films that border between blood and gore. The entire genre of zombies is still a rarity in India, a niche on its own; we aim to expose as many Indians as we can to this genre; especially now that successful films like ‘Warm Bodies’ and TV shows like ‘The Returned’ are taking the world by storm.”

Incidentally, ‘Rise of the Zombie’ is a film about a wildlife photographer who transforms into a zombie after being infected by one. Both Kenny’s performance and Singh’s writing have been lauded on the social media circuit.

The other high point was Tere Bin Laden writer-director Abhishek Sharma’s announcement of an “unconventional spinoff” to his 2010 cult comedy titled ‘Tere Bin Laden 3’. Said Sharma, “The two films, even though extremely similar, exist in two different universes,” without giving away any more details.

However, when a member of the audience asked the also present host-actor Manish Paul, who plays one of the leads in Sharma’s upcoming film, to name the character he plays, Sharma answered out of turn: “Since my name is so common in India that you will find apartment buildings sharing it, Manish has decided to give all his future characters my last name – Sharma.”

The humor wasn’t lost on the crowd which burst out into peals of laughter even as another spectator asked Paul whether he would ever return to television after making a debut on the big screen. “I will continue hosting, and balance films alongside. I am currently working on a new TV show, but am not at liberty to say more,” replied Paul.

Leaving aside the event itself, Comic Con has garnered 5 lakh likes on its official Facebook page.

  • “I am Iron Man” reveals Downey Jr, donning the iron suit again

“I am Iron Man” reveals Downey Jr, donning the iron suit again

MUMBAI: “Take that suit out, then who are you?”…. “Billionaire, genius, playboy, philanthropist” remarks Marvel‘s Mr. Stark played by Robert Downey Jr. in Hollywood‘s one of highest grossing movie of the decade, The Avengers. (2012).

After a spread of disappointing rumours questioning Downey donning the Iron Man suit ever again, especially when Downey had hinted in numerous interviews, including a recent segment on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” saying his days of playing Tony Stark are over, ‘Marvellites‘ have now a reason to rejoice as Marvel studios confirms of signing Robert Downey, Jr. to reprise the role of Marvel‘s iconic genius and witty playboy Tony Stark. Tony Stark a.k.a. Robert Downey Jr.‘s famous closing line “I am Iron Man” in the very first Iron Man series sparked life into the studios which raked in over $585 million worldwide and has only doubled over the two sequels grossing over $ 2.2 billion (Iron Man2; Iron Man3) over the last few years.

Marvel asserts that under the two-picture agreement, Downey will star as Tony Stark/Iron Man in Marvel‘s The Avengers 2 and Marvel‘s The Avengers 3. As per reports, The Avengers sequel will be helmed and written by Joss Whedon who has also directed the original grossing over $1.51 billion worldwide. While the script is still being worked upon, The Avengers 2 is set to go into production by March 2014 and open in theatres by 1 May 2015.

Piling the fan‘s curiosity, Marvel on its website also revealed that the sequel would feature new Marvel characters never before seen on the big screen and in the coming days and weeks and months, the studio will reveal additional casting updates, new characters coming to Marvel movies and much more thrilling news quenching the curiosity of its fans. As a promotion gig, Marvel claims to reveal such information from the most secret meetings at Marvel.

Downey is represented at CAA by Bryan Lourd, Jim Toth and Matt Leaf and by his attorneys Tom Hansen and Stewart Brookman of the firm Hansen Jacobson. However after tough negotiations with the penny-pincher studio as previously reported by Deadline, Marvel felt it comfortable to shell out and grab Downey Jr. especially when Downey Jr‘s past two Marvel films, 2012‘s Marvel‘s The Avengers and this year‘s Iron Man 3, rank as two of the top five grossing films of all time, collectively raking in over $2.7 billion worldwide to date.

The agreement figure however remains undisclosed but is speculated to gross in millions as the original had earned him (Downey Jr.) no less than $50 million (speculated).

  • China-based Bona Film in talks with 4 Hollywood studios

China-based Bona Film in talks with 4 Hollywood studios

MUMBAI: Chinese film distributor Bona Film Group Ltd. is in talks with four Hollywood studios for co-producing movies for international distribution.

“We hope to work with the larger studio houses … and we‘re having discussions with several,” Bona Film Group CEO Dong Yu has reportedly said. The studios that Bona is talking to include Universal Pictures, Sony Corp., Twentieth Century Fox and Viacom Inc.‘s Paramount Pictures.

If the talks materialise, the plans would represent an acceleration of Chinese-US film co-productions, which have typically been made on a one-off basis. Some of the studios in mention have entered joint ventures or co-productions with Chinese companies in recent months. Walt Disney Co., for instance, had partnered with China‘s DMG Entertainment to co-produce the next “Iron Man” film in China in April.

Last month, News Corp. had declared that it had bought a roughly 20 per cent stake in Bona but the deal didn‘t include any production agreement with Fox. Yu said that he would like to work with Fox as a “preferred partner” but Bona would be free to make deals with other studios.
