  • Irdeto tightens the screws on sports pirates with high-frequency key rotation

Irdeto tightens the screws on sports pirates with high-frequency key rotation

AMSTERDAM:  Live sport is the crown jewel of streaming — and the favourite target of pirates. The digital-security specialist Irdeto has launched a new feature for its cloud-based multi-DRM platform, Irdeto Control, designed to make life harder for stream hijackers and easier for broadcasters under pressure from rights holders.

The enhancement centres on high-frequency key rotation: a technique that shrinks the exposure window for encryption keys, forcing frequent re-authentication. Each cycle destabilises pirate streams by disrupting the stolen keys they rely on, making common tricks such as key extraction and CDN leeching far less effective. The result, says Irdeto, is the gradual degradation of illegal feeds — a frustrating user experience that pushes fans back towards legitimate platforms.

Irdeto Control already delivers more than 15 billion DRM transactions monthly, protecting content for over 200m users. It supports Widevine, FairPlay and PlayReady, while layering on piracy countermeasures such as concurrency management, vulnerable-device blocking, emulator detection and geo/VPN enforcement. The new key-rotation capability slots into existing multi-DRM workflows without requiring changes to players or packagers — a crucial point for operators wary of integration headaches.

“Piracy in live sports continues to evolve rapidly, and rights holders are demanding tougher security standards that don’t hinder operational efficiency,” said  Irdeto chief operating officer for video entertainment Andrew Bunten. “This is a major step forward in protecting the value of live content.”

The economics of piracy are sobering: for broadcasters, unauthorised streaming of premium leagues erodes subscription revenues; for rights holders, it undermines billion-dollar licensing deals. Regulators, too, have begun pressing platforms to prove they can safeguard live streams against theft.

Irdeto, which has long positioned itself at the intersection of video platforms and security, hopes its latest upgrade will strengthen its pitch to both camps. By degrading pirate feeds rather than merely chasing them offline, it aims to tilt the balance in favour of legal distribution.

The announcement comes ahead of IBC 2025 in Amsterdam, where Irdeto will showcase its full suite of video-protection tools. In a marketplace where streaming platforms compete as much on content security as on user experience, the company is betting that tougher defences can help keep live sport the revenue engine it has always been.

Irdeto partners with Amlogic, Skyworth to launch production-ready Hybrid STB Reference Design Programme

MUMBAI – Android TV, with the extensive Google app store is already playing an influential role in pay TV, as operators are under pressure to increase consumer choice, reduce cost and speed up time to market. To address these challenges, Irdeto has partnered with Amlogic, a leading fabless semiconductor company, and Skyworth Digital, the world’s largest set-top box (STB) manufacturer, to launch a production-ready hybrid STB reference design under Google’s Android TV program.

This provides operators with a pre-certified, cost-efficient hybrid Android TV platform that reduces launch time by up to six months. It is easier to maintain and provides a future-proof platform for operators to launch new business models.

“Under the Google program, we are delivering an Android TV production-ready hybrid STB reference design which will allow operators to simplify integration, speed up time to market and ensure a great user experience,” said Amlogic  Corporate Business Strategy Senior Vice President

James Xie . “Through our partnership with Irdeto and Skyworth, we are also ensuring the highest levels of security to meet the most demanding premium content requirements, whilst ensuring operators have full control. In addition, the total product lifecycle is managed, including the update process, which provides significant savings to the operator.”

The lynchpin of this production-ready hybrid STB reference design is security. With Irdeto Armor, operators can provide a great Android TV experience – giving consumers both broadcast TV and the OTT apps they crave – while ensuring the highest levels of security for premium content delivery. Part of Irdeto Armor, App Watch also prevents the use of malicious and pirate apps or add-ons on the STB, a challenge that must be addressed when giving consumers access to open app stores.

“We’ve seen hybrid Android TV STBs as strategic additions to operators’ portfolio, enabling operators to launch premium services at the speed and cost-efficiency they couldn’t achieve on proprietary platforms,” said Irdeto  Strategic Partnerships, Business Development and Marketing Vice President Steeve Huin . “With more at stake, operators must ensure the best security for both the content and the platform, including protection from malicious and pirate apps and add-ons on the set-top box. This partnership provides a secure, production-ready hybrid STB reference design that is pre-certified, meaning that operators will see an even quicker deployment for Android TV.”

“Fast deployment at scale is essential for operators looking to launch premium services and content,” said Skyworth Digital  Strategic Partnerships, Sales and Marketing Vice President Charlie Zheng. “This partnership enables quick and easy deployment of new and innovative Android TV STBs, based on a single design, with trusted security implemented at the core. This provides operators with the assurance that their services can be easily maintained and are protected from pirates looking to implement malicious apps and supply illegal content.”

  • Game Piracy Results in Over $21 Million in Lost Revenue During Opening Release Window

Game Piracy Results in Over $21 Million in Lost Revenue During Opening Release Window

SALZBURG: As the latest premium game titles become increasingly anticipated by consumers looking to play, data from Irdeto reveals that if a AAA title is pirated upon its launch, publishers can expect hundreds of thousands of downloads of illegal copies, resulting in massive revenue loss.

The most critical part of the release cycle is the first 14 days as the majority of activations occur during this period. For highly anticipated titles, this could include up to 80% of sales, 50% of which are within the first four days.

Irdeto tracked the downloads of a major sports title on P2P networks after the title, which did not include anti-tamper protection, was cracked on the same day of its release. During the first two weeks, Irdeto detected 355,664 torrent downloads of the illegal copy of the title. Given the retail price of the game, this puts the total potential loss of revenue from P2P downloads at $21,336,283.

The research also found that the first day of release alone is crucial for the protection of a AAA title, as 12% of the illegal P2P downloads occurred within the first day of the cracked copy appearing on the P2P networks (and a substantial number of these in the first hour).

“Piracy is a threat that is firmly established in the games industry and, as our research suggests, it can result in potentially huge revenue losses for publishers if their games are compromised within the 14-day window following release,” said Reinhard Blaukovitsch, Managing Director of Denuvo, Irdeto. “With this in mind, it is crucial for publishers to implement security strategies that make their games as difficult as possible to crack and reverse engineer. This way they will be able to better protect the revenues that allow them to continue to create such compelling games.”
