    Swiggy’s awe striking revenue surge feeds growth, but losses deepen

    MUMBAI: They bring us joy with a click, delivering steaming biryanis, comforting gulab jamuns, and all things delightful, right to our doors. But behind every pop notification—’Miss me?’ from our favorite desserts—lies a story of grit, ambition, and relentless pursuit. Swiggy, India’s food delivery and quick commerce titan, has filled our carts with convenience, but at a cost that has left its own coffers under strain. In its Q2 FY25 results, unveiled on 3 December 2024, Swiggy showcased an awe-inspiring surge in revenues by 30 per cent YoY to Rs 36,015 million. Yet, this celebratory crescendo is tempered by an echo of concern—net losses have deepened, reflecting the challenges of sustaining growth while keeping an expansive team and ecosystem thriving. It’s a tale as flavorful as their marketing, and as complex as their financials—balancing indulgence with accountability.

    Swiggy’s total revenue from operations increased by 30.2 per cent YoY, reaching Rs 36,015 million in Q2 FY25 compared to Rs 27,633 million in Q2 FY24. This leap reflects strong performance across key segments, particularly food delivery and quick commerce. However, the company’s consolidated losses stood at Rs 6,255 million for the quarter, marking an 8.6 per cent rise from the Rs 5,751 million loss recorded in the same period last year.

    The increase in expenses, driven by marketing, logistics, and employee benefits, strained profitability despite robust revenue growth. Total expenditure for Q2 FY25 amounted to Rs 43,095 million, a 22.8 per cent increase YoY. Swiggy’s continued focus on customer acquisition and brand building weighed heavily on its bottom line.

    Key drivers:

    ●   Food Delivery: As Swiggy’s flagship segment, food delivery generated Rs 15,745 million in revenue, reflecting a YoY growth of 22.9 per cent. Enhanced customer loyalty programs and competitive pricing played pivotal roles in this growth.

    ●   Quick Commerce (Instamart): Quick commerce revenues skyrocketed by 135.4 per cent YoY, reaching Rs 4,900 million, emphasising Swiggy’s commitment to diversifying its service portfolio. Strategic investments in dark stores and supply chain logistics have fueled this expansion.

    ●   Supply Chain and Distribution: This segment contributed Rs 14,526 million, up 22.0 per cent from the previous year, as Swiggy capitalised on its warehousing and fulfillment network to streamline FMCG distribution.

    ●   Platform Innovations: Revenues from platform innovations, including initiatives like Swiggy Genie, amounted to Rs 253 million but faced a decline from Rs 494 million YoY.

    Expansion comes at a cost

    Swiggy’s aggressive growth strategy comes at a significant cost. Employee benefits rose to Rs 6,073 million in Q2 FY25, up 13.2 per cent YoY, reflecting hiring and retention efforts in a competitive labor market. Delivery charges surged by 32.5 per cent to Rs 10,949 million, as Swiggy expanded operations in Tier II and Tier III cities.

    The company’s marketing expenses also increased, with advertising and promotional costs totaling Rs 5,371 million, up 8.8 per cent from the previous year. These expenditures underline Swiggy’s push to strengthen its market presence amidst fierce competition from rivals like Zomato and Blinkit.

    IPO milestones

    Swiggy’s listing on the NSE and BSE in November 2024 marked a significant milestone. The IPO raised Rs 115,407 million through fresh issues and offer-for-sale components. Proceeds were earmarked for expanding Instamart’s operations, enhancing technology infrastructure, and bolstering working capital.

    Additionally, Swiggy’s investment in its wholly owned subsidiary, Scootsy Logistics, reached Rs 1,600 crore. This infusion aims to optimise supply chain capabilities and support quick commerce scalability.

    Swiggy’s outlook hinges on its ability to navigate the profitability challenge. With over 70 per cent of revenues stemming from food delivery, diversifying its income streams is crucial. Quick commerce, which grew phenomenally in Q2 FY25, holds promise but demands continued investment.

    The company has also signaled its intent to strengthen customer engagement through tech-driven solutions and personalised services. However, the path to sustainable profitability will require stringent cost controls and efficiency enhancements across its operations.

    FirstCry parent company Brainbees files IPO application

    Mumbai: According to SEBI (Security Exchange Board of India) filings, Brainbees solutions parent company of Omni channel FirstCry submitted an application for an IPO (Initial Public Offer) on 28 December 2023.

    Launched in 2010 headquartered in Pune, It is an e-commerce company focused on a niche sector of baby products. In 2020 FirstCry raised Rs 1000 crores for series E funding. As per media reports in fiscal year 2023- 2024 the company reported revenue of Rs 1406.9 crores. The IPO fund can utilise procurement, employees benefit expenses, advertising expenses. The startup currently owns more than 300 stores and around 615 franchise based stores across Pan India.

    According to Moneycontrol reported, FirstCry is looking to raise funds of Rs 4200 Crores through IPO, rest 60 per cent fund will garner through OFS (Offer For sale). The company is looking further for expansion and growth.

    Company spent Rs 159.2 crores on Employees Benefit Expenses (EBE) before the IPO. In the fiscal year 22-23 the company suffered losses. According to DRHP filed before the regulator renowned names of institutions like M & M, SoftBank, Apricot, Investments, Valiant, Mauritius, TIMF, Think India will sell its stakes from FirstCry.

    The OFS consists of 5.4 crore of equity shares. In 2021, the company raised funds from equity funding.

    Zomato co-founder Gaurav Gupta moves on

    Mumbai: Gaurav Gupta, one of the key executives of food tech platform Zomato has moved on from the company.

    Gupta, who joined Zomato in 2015, was head of supply at the food delivery company. In 2018, he was elevated to the position of chief operating officer and later designated as co-founder in 2019. He had played a crucial role in the company’s landmark initial public offering (IPO).

    “I am taking a new turn in my life and will be starting a new chapter, taking a lot from this defining chapter of my life — the last 6 years at Zomato,” Gupta told executives at Zomato in an email, as per the company’s blog.

    His departure comes just days after Zomato exited its grocery delivery and nutraceutical business. The company had ventured into the nutraceutical business last year with the launch of health and fitness products.

    Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal confirmed Gupta’s exit on Twitter. “Thank you Gaurav Gupta—the last six years have been amazing and we have come very far. There’s so much of our journey still ahead of us, and I am thankful that we have a great team and leadership to carry us forward,” he wrote.

    Despite the pandemic, the company witnessed a turnover of Rs 27.45 crores demonstrating a burgeoning growth. In addition to this, Bodhi Tree Multimedia expects a good FY20-21 with the value of the order book which will be serviced in the coming year.

    The company’s IPO’s net proceeds will be utilized for meeting the company’s working capital requirements, general corporate purposes and meeting expenses related to IPO.  The company has issued 3.90 lakh equity shares at a price of Rs 95 per equity share. The IPO opened for public subscription on 9 October 2020 and closed on 13 October 2020.

    Mumbai: Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) may launch the initial public offering (IPO) for Reliance Jio by late 2018 or early 2019 to further challenge the collective might of Airtel and the Idea-Vodafone combine, according to a Bloomberg report. Reliance Jio, which hasn’t made a profit since its official launch last year, is targeting to improve its financial performance before diluting any stake.

    Reliance Jio reported net loss of Rs2.71 billion in the quarter ended 30 September 2017, though the business made profit before interest and taxes over the period. The wireless operator is “ahead of our schedule in terms of the returns” generated, Ambani said at a recent event.

    A Reliance Jio listing would cap a return to the mobile market for Ambani, more than a decade after a family feud that led him to cede control of a previous telecom venture to his younger brother. Reliance Jio, which is wholly owned by RIL, launched a free-for-life call service last year that triggered a price war and consolidation in one of the world’s most crowded mobile markets.

    Bharti Airtel Ltd this year agreed to absorb Tata Group’s mobile phone business, while Vodafone Group Plc and Idea Cellular Ltd announced they would merge their local operations to create the nation’s largest wireless operator. Despite being the newest entrant, Reliance Jio has accumulated more than 138.6 million subscribers, making it the fourth largest operator at the end of September, according to data from Trai.

    Deliberations about a Reliance Jio listing are at an early stage, and there’s no certainty they will lead to a transaction, Bloomberg’s sources said. A representative for Reliance Industries declined to comment.

  • GTPL Hathway declares maiden dividend on higher numbers for FY-17

    BENGALURU: Indian multi-system operator GTPL Hathway declared a maiden dividend of ten percent for the year ended 31 March 2017 (FY-17, current year) per equity share of face value of Rs 10. The company was listed on the bourses on 4 July 2017 after the conclusion of a Rs 4,850 initial public offering (IPO) that was oversubscribed by 1.53 times in the third week of June 2017.

    GTPL reported 26.5 percent growth in Total Income to Rs 9,417.40 million in FY-17 from Rs 7,442.84 million in FY-16. Net Profit after tax (PAT) increased by more than seven times to Rs 262.42 million in the current fiscal from Rs 36.93 million in the previous year. Total comprehensive income also increased almost seven-fold to Rs 259.79 million from Rs 38.58 million. EBIDTA including other income in FY-17 increased 50.7 percent to Rs 2,077.33 million from Rs 1,595.93 million in the previous fiscal. Earnings per share increased by about 5.5 times in fiscal 2017 to Rs 4.10 from Rs 0.75 in the previous year.

    The company in its investor presentation says that cable TV subscription revenue grew 33 percent to Rs 4,494 million in FY-17 as compared to the Rs 3378 million during the previous fiscal. Cable TV Average Revenue per User (ARPU, net of taxes) in phases I, II, III and IV was Rs 100, 95, 54 and 41 respectively. Active set top boxes in FY-17 went up to 5.98 million, while the number of set top boxes seeded until 31 March 2017 was 6.90 million.

    Broadband revenue grew 77 percent to Rs 1,288 million from Rs 730 million during the same period. Broadband revenue’s contribution to overall revenue increased 4 percent, and the company says that broadband Broadband revenue grew 77 percent to Rs 1,288 million from Rs 730 million during the same period. Broadband ARPU increased 5.5 percent in FY-17 to Rs 480 from Rs 455 in the previous fiscal. GTPL Hathway claims to have seeded 1.48 million set top boxes in fiscal 2017.

    Let us look at the other numbers reported by GTPL Hathway

    Total expenses increased 20 percent to Rs 7,013 million in FY-17 from Rs 5,847 million in FY-16. Pay channel cost increased 17 percent to Rs 3,821 million from Rs 3,277 million in the previous fiscal. Bandwidth expense increased 78 percent in FY-17 to Rs 422 million from Rs 237 million in Fy-16.

    Employee cost increased 34 percent to Rs 1,084 million from Rs 808 million. Other operating expense reduced 23 percent to Rs 471 million from Rs 612 million. Administrative expense in FY-17 increased 33 percent to Rs 1,215 million from Rs 913 million.

One of its most profitable associations, and probably one of the largest contributors (besides Hathway itself) to Hathway’s consolidated numbers across major financial and operational parameters is GTPL Hathway Limited (GTPL), a material subsidiary, in which Hathway owns a 50 per cent stake.

    Besides Hathway, another major shareholder of GTPL is its co-founder, Aniruddhasinhji Jadeja who directly owns 14.6 per cent and controls another 29.1 per cent through another shareholding entity Gujarat Digi Com Private Limited which is majority owned by him. The other co-founder Kanaksinh Rana owns 5.2 per cent shares of GTPL.

    Operational Matrices of GTPL

    According to the presentation, GTPL  is the largest MSO in Gujarat with 67 per cent market share and the second largest MSO in Kolkata and Howrah with a 24 per cent market share (in 2015, based on cable television subscribers).

    As of 30 September 2016 (Q2-17),GTPL had active relationships with 13,775 local cable operators (LCOs). It says it has added 4,004 and 1,286 LCOs on a net basis in FY-16 and FY-15 respectively, and another 2,507 LCOs on a net basis as of 30 September 2016

    As of Q2-17,GTPL is present in 169 towns across ten states of the country. The company claims a cable subscriber universe of 74.3 lakhas of 31 August 2016 of which 54.1 lakh (72.8 per cent) were active subscribers. GTPL claims to have seeded 61.9 lakh set top boxes or 83.3 per cent of its cable universe.  Primary cable ARPU as on Q1-17 is Rs 220.34 and has been increasing steadily as per Hathway’s investor presentation submitted to the bourses.Currently in Gujarat, GTPL offers various monthly pay channel packages, including HD packages, to its digital cable television subscribers ranging from Rs 250 to Rs 470, including all applicable taxes.

    It has 2.2 lakh broadband internet (broadband) subscribers and a broadband ARPU of Rs 463.87. Data consumption has been increasing steadily. Broadband ARPU has been increasing steadily over the past few years as per the Hathway’s investor presentation submitted to the bourses.

    GTPL owns and operates 28 channels offering localised content across a wide range of genres including religious, culture, film, music and education.

    Financial Performance

    Please refer to Figure A below for GTPL’s revenue break-up over a five a period starting FY-12 (year ended 31 March 2012) until FY-16 (year ended 31 March 2016) as well as for the quarter ended 30 June 2016 (Q1-17).  Further, Figure B below shows revenue breakup in Rs crore for the five year period starting FY-12 until FY-16.

    In absolute rupees, all revenue or income heads have been increasing. In terms of per centage of operational revenue, this is not always the case.

    As is obvious, contribution from activation revenue to operational revenue has been increasing with the implantation of DAS from FY-12 to FY-16 in terms of percentage of revenue, as well as in absolute rupees. However, contribution from activation revenue has declined in Q1-17. Broadband internet is another service that MSO’s have been offering for increase of overall ARPU, that has shown an upward trend, both in absolute rupees as well as in terms of percentage of operational revenues.

    Though contribution from Placement/Carriage income to operational revenues has been declining in terms of per centage of revenue, it has been increasing steadily in absolute rupees.

    The company has been a profitable one – both in terms of operating profits as well as in terms of profit after tax and has been earning money for its shareholders as is evident from its EBIDTA as well as profit after tax (PAT) numbers for the past five years and Q1-17 as well. Margins have been improving as is evident from Figure C below.
