ZooZoos as TV stars this IPL!

MUMBAI: Those waiting with bated breath for the Indian Premiere League (IPL) have one more reason to hoot. The funny eggheads of the balloon bellies, gibberish and idiosyncratic ways will be back and how!

Vodafone’s ZooZoos, which first appeared during IPL 2009, will take charge for the fifth time this season. This time round, they will be seen participating in television shows of different hues even as they peddle the mobile services provider’s value-added products.

The latest campaign, also created by Ogilvy & Mather, comprises 10 TVCs depicting the ZooZoos in a creative and engaging manner; each promoting a unique Vodafone product/service.

O&M national creative director Rajiv Rao, who, along with his team, started working on the creatives in March this year, said, “Television has become a part of popular culture so we thought of using it as the background. However, it is a challenge for the whole team to keep reinventing ZooZoos and whether we succeed in conveying the brand’s message through these films.”

The first two TVCs releasing on 16 April revolve around two product propositions of Vodafone – Choose your Number and Chhota Credit – and feature a reality TV show and a quiz show, respectively.

Will this result in a ZooZoo overkill? “The street hawkers started selling ZooZoo merchandises at least a month back. This is proof enough of how much people love these characters. On the digital front, the ZooZoos have millions of fans and since they come once a year, I think it’s quite the opposite of overdose,” said Rao.

According to Vodafone India brand communications and insights senior vice president, Ronita Mitra, “Like every year, this year too, Vodafone India has planned a high decibel 360-degree campaign around IPL. The ZooZoos are back during IPL 2014 to communicate Vodafone’s differentiated customer experience that offers unique products and services to make the customer’s life simple and convenient.”

Mitra added that apart from TV, Vodafone’s campaign during IPL 2014 would be supported by OOH, digital and other mediums.

  • Sony Max & Six take IPL to the fans, with on-ground activities

Sony Max & Six take IPL to the fans, with on-ground activities

MUMBAI: The biggest cricketing extravaganza – Indian Premiere League – is just a couple of days away and the official broadcaster Sony Max and Six is going all out (literally) to get the fans jumping and dancing.

Kicking off the on-ground activities, the network rolled out its ‘Bulaava Express’, which is an open air bus, on the streets of Mumbai on Sunday carting along Kandivali, Carter road, Worli Sea face and Marine Drive.

This unique open air bus is designed to capture the imagination of the citizens with a host of entertaining and unique activities. Be it the impromptu ‘buckram ka chukrum’ which quizzed people on their knowledge of the tournament or ‘Bulaava Bahana’ which mandated fans to confess which ‘bulaava’ they have used to watch the Pepsi IPL, the activities left the audiences hungry for more. The journey finally ended with the specially created energetic ‘Buckram dance’ which left the people spellbound.

Speaking on the occasion, Sony Max VP marketing Vaishali Sharma says: “Bulaava Express is the perfect initiative to get the people excited about the tournament. Cricket fans were exuberant about being a part of this activity. The overwhelming response and enthusiasm of the crowd has encouraged us to take the fun and excitement to more locations.”

The ‘Bulaava Express’ will tour the country across 13 cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Chennai, Nashik, Indore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Nagpur between April and May creating euphoria for Pepsi IPL 2014. Sony Max & Six have created this unique initiative especially for the followers of the grand spectacle of Pepsi IPL.

Apart from the ‘Bulaava Express’, plans are afoot for mall activations as well. Activities at the mall will include the ‘Buckram Dance’- A unique buckram dance done by a troupe which popularizes the campaign track and the “buckram move”, ‘Buckram ka Chukrum’- fun games/IPL based trivia to popularise the Buckram, ‘Buckram Hunt’ and ‘Bulaava Bahaana’.

The mall activation will also see a unique concept which is called ‘Buckram pe Buckram’. “This will be a giant size collar cut out of about 10 feet, here we will encourage people to come and write small notes saying “Iss baar kaunsi team ka bulaava aya hai” and stick it on the huge cut out,” Sharma explains.

Storyboard Brandcom has been appointed to look after the OOH campaign for the broadcaster with the campaign spread across 97 cities in 500 sites. WATConsult is handling the digital and social marketing for the IPL. This time around the marketing spends have seen a spike of nearly 12-15 per cent as against last year by Sony.

The broadcaster also intends to target the heartland by reaching out to more than 400 LC1 towns over the next month and a half with ‘Remote ka bulaava’. “The idea is to really get people even in the smaller towns hooked onto the game,” says Sharma. “We will also be going door to door and conducting quizzes and handing out merchandise to the winners.”

This time around, with the help of WATConsult, the broadcaster has also launched an app that will enable the fans to catch the match action on their mobiles and further build the engagement.

“The message we are sending out through the campaign is very clear, the call for the IPL brings out the attitude among the fans and translates into them running to catch the live match action from wherever they are,” Sharma expounds.

The broadcaster is leaving no stone unturned in pushing its biggest property through its network. It has been running the broadcast campaign for over a couple of weeks now and will carry it on for another four weeks, spread across 95 channels.

On print, the broadcaster has bought spots across leading dailies like; Times of India, Nav Bharat Times, Vijay Karnataka, Dainik Saamana,  Daily Thanthi, The Hindu, Vijayavani, Deccan Chronicle, Saakshi, Eenadu, Dainik Bhaskar, Divya Bhaskar, Divya Marathi, Dainik Jagran, Amar Ujala, Gujarat Samachar, Lokmat, Ajit, Anand Bazaar Patrika, among others.

The Radio campaign is spread over two weeks across 11 stations, the broadcaster has a special plan for addressing LC1 markets where it will be playing the spots on air.

“We have done some extremely interesting innovations with Radio Mirchi this year; Red FM, Big FM and Fever will also be promoting the campaign in a big way via contents and other interesting integrations,” reveals Sharma.

  • IndiaWin Sports clarifies Mumbai Indians is not a bidder in ISL

IndiaWin Sports clarifies Mumbai Indians is not a bidder in ISL

MUMBAI: The curiosity around the Indian Super League football seems to be building with the organisers having received positive responses from many interested parties. It was in keeping with this that the deadline for submitting the bid documents had been extended by two days to 26 and 27 March.

While there has been much speculation around who all could be vying to own the eight city franchises; there have been rumours that IndiaWins Sports – owner of the IPL franchise Mumbai Indians – allegedly bid for the Mumbai team as it also happens to be a ‘League Partner’ for the city.

IndiaWin Sports released a press statement saying: “We have received several media queries over the last few days on whether we have bid for a franchise in the Indian Super League. Most of these queries are specific to the interest Mumbai Indians ‘must’ have in being a ‘League Partner’ for the city of Mumbai.”

“IndiaWin Sports, which owns the IPL franchise Mumbai Indians, wishes to state that we have not bid for a franchise in the upcoming Indian Super League,” the statement added.

The Indian Super League certainly provides a promising opportunity for a sports brand to develop unique connect, brand extension and value creation. “However adhering to the highest standards of corporate governance and transparency, and in the larger interest of the sport, the management at IndiaWin Sports had taken a conscious decision not to participate in the bidding process,” the statement further said.

ISL aims to be India’s next major sports property. Having put in place the foundational structure, it is now at the homestretch identifying the ‘League Partners’ who will form the pillar of this professional league.

Eight committed team owners (to be known as League Partners) will be selected as per a sophisticated evaluated criteria encompassing financial and developmental parameters. The league aims to unlock the aspirational energy in the youth, build a stage for talents and teams to flourish, co-create a vibrant ecosystem, and make the sport a national mission by giving much – needed impetus to the game of football.

Some of the big names from the country’s corporate world, Bollywood biggies and present sports team owners have shown keen interest to be part of the tourney.

The league was to begin in January but had to be postponed owing to issues like scheduling and lack of a window.

The winning bids announcement will take place in the second week of April. Ernst & Young, the advisory firm, has been entrusted the responsibility of evaluating the bid documents.

  • Indian leg of the IPL to begin from 2 May

Indian leg of the IPL to begin from 2 May

MUMBAI: There is good news for Indian cricket fans, who were left disheartened after the news hit that the first 20 matches of this edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will kick-off in UAE.

IPL is set to return to Indian shores on 2 May for the remaining 36 matches, including four play-offs, which will be played in the home-leg.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after having successive discussions with the authorities at home, decided that the IPL can be played at home beginning from 2 May. The first leg of the IPL will be held in UAE from 16 to 30 April due to the general elections in India.

In the home-leg, each franchise will play nine matches and five of the eight teams will be playing at least four matches in their home stadium.

Chennai Super Kings will play two matches at Ranchi, while Kings XI Punjab will play two games at Cuttack. Rajasthan Royals will play four matches at Ahmedabad. There will be no matches on 1 May and 17 May.

The schedule of the UAE leg has also been tweaked to suit the franchises. The evening match slated for 26 April in Abu Dhabi, between Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), will now be designated as a home match for the Knight Riders and the 28 April match in Dubai, between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and KXIP, will be designated as a home game for Kings team.

“Following on from the launch of ticket sales for the UAE leg today (3 April), I am pleased that we are now able to confirm the dates for the rest of the season,” said BCCI-IPL interim president Sunil Gavaskar in a press statement.

“It is great news that the fans back home in India will be able to watch a large part of the Pepsi IPL 2014. Given the various challenges and the logistical complexities, we have spent a considerable amount of time in crafting a balanced schedule,” he added.

IPL governing council chairman Ranjib Biswal said, “We are delighted to have the season back in India at the start of May. Organising an event of this scale at multiple venues in two countries is an enormous organisational undertaking and we are very grateful to the Government of India, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the police authorities in the various states for their support.”

Hosting IPL involves elaborate planning on several fronts, logistics included and it is critical that there is surety on the availability of the match venues, for a tournament of this magnitude. The BCCI has tried to work with various franchises and stakeholders to get confirmations to host matches in the cities.

The Rajasthan Royals have indicated to the BCCI that they are pleased to play their four home matches of the India leg of the 2014 season, at Ahmedabad, to avoid any uncertainty to their home matches. KXIP and CSK will be playing some of their home matches outside Mohali and Chennai respectively, due to non-availability of their home venue, for a large portion of May 2014.

Looks like the IPL will continue to look at as many venues as possible to play the tournament in forthcoming seasons, and that’s a good sign for smaller states and regions to come to the forefront.

The opening match on Wednesday, 16 April, will be played in Abu Dhabi, and contested between 2013 winners – Mumbai Indians and the 2012 IPL champions – Kolkata Knight Riders.

Pursuant to the initiative taken by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, many State Governments have indicated that IPL matches can be conducted in their respective states. Based on the responses received so far, the BCCI believes that the Pepsi IPL 2014 can be conducted in India from the first week of May.

  • “Grow sports first, before thinking of monetizing from it”

“Grow sports first, before thinking of monetizing from it”

MUMBAI: Looking at its entertainment quotient, cricket is the sport that comes closest to Hindi movies. However, not just cricket but the entire gamut of sports and how to better monetise this ecosystem formed the subject of a panel discussion on day two of FICCI FRAMES 2014, the 15th edition of the annual convention.

The panel was constituted by NBA India MD Yannick Colaco, Star India president sports Nitin Kukreja, Dempo Group chairman Srinivas Dempo and cricket presenter Gautam Bhimani.

“If I had Rs 10 lakh, I would put nearly Rs 9.3 lakh in cricket and the remaining amount in other sports,” said Bhimani, at his quirkiest best. He began by drawing attention to two things – the fight for visibility between cricket and other sports and how to take the million dollar baby i.e. cricket, to an even higher level.

Colaco expressed the view that before monetizing any sport, it had to be built from the ground up. “There are a lot of opportunities but we need to build and grow a sport before actually thinking of monetizing from it,” he said. Once the sport was popularized, money would follow in time.

Echoing similar thoughts, Dempo said, “Football in India is an approximately Rs 150 crore market. Even the I-League, which has around 14 teams, is only about Rs 10 crore in size and these are all operating expenses without any returns.”

According to recent statistics by TAM, the reach of a Barclays Premiere League is nearly 27 million as compared to that of the I-League at 6.5 million. “There is a lot of cash burn that takes place and football is currently running in the nation only because the people running it are passionate about the game, but this needs to change,” said Dempo.

Kukreja brought in the business angle and said, “We also need to look at numbers and return of investment (ROI), which is the most important proposition for a sports broadcaster. The existence of the price cap regulation is a hurdle and with foreign exchange soaring by 50 per cent in recent history, there is only so much that a broadcaster can do.”

Not only is money not flowing to broadcasters and federations as it is supposed to but complete monetization is not possible due to the existence of the public broadcaster. “Earlier, the idea was to reach homes which were not lucky enough to have cable and satellite and only had terrestrial TV sets, but things have changed now, and yet, we have to continue sharing rights with the public broadcaster, which deters us from monetizing to the best of our ability,” said Kukreja.

While there are opportunities to invest in other sports, there is a need for proactive participation from sporting federations as well.

According to Colaco, “A regulatory framework needs to be put in place to make things work more smoothly. India is still developing as a sports market and there are limitless possibilities.” Citing the example of NBA, he said, “The kind of coverage and following that the sport there is incredible. There is a great following and coverage across school, college, and finally, the national teams.” Reason being the sport is promoted at the grassroots level and people are encouraged to inculcate the spirit of sportsmanship from a very young age.

“I really can’t understand the rat race to start various leagues in India, to the extent there is even a Kabbadi league that is on the cards. I have no problems with leagues, it’s only great for the game, but the problem is to sustain the noise and hype created for such events with ample amount of content to follow as well. That is something that the federations need to ponder upon,” said Colaco.

Adding to this, Kukrjea said, “IPL works because it’s an experience, it brings families together, it is packaged very slickly and this is how various leagues work around the globe. The point that Colaco made rightly is the number of days that a sport is on – there is 300 days of cricket, but there are only 70 days of hockey and maybe 100-odd days of badminton. So the real question is do we have the required content that can keep fans engaged like we have in cricket?”

Thanks to the kind of ad revenues that cricket generates, it ends up receiving a lot of flak. For instance, a mega cricket event like the World Cup earns anywhere close to Rs 8-9 lakh for a 10 second spot as compared to a big-ticket NBA event which sells for a meager Rs 2,500 for the same 10 second spot.

Elaborating on this, Kukreja said, “Sports is ideally a distribution revenue-driven market but cricket, for reasons best known to the stakeholders, is ad-driven. And a marquee event like the World Cup can’t be compared to any other event in India, where, if there are 10 channels to choose from, numbers one to nine will have live cricket and number ten will have highlights of some live match.”

Speaking of the lack of excitement around the U-17 football world cup coming to India in 2017, Dempo said, “I really can’t believe that there is no buzz around such a big event and that the buzz will start only a year prior to the live action. The media needs to come together and ensure this gets proper coverage. I am sure it will work as a catalyst for the sport of football in the nation, but the national side really needs to pull up its socks, because I have seen Mexico and Brazil play and I fear we stand nowhere unless we really push ourselves against the wall.”

In a similar vein, Kukreja spoke of the premature death of Formula One in India. “The sport has a lot of potential and is the pinnacle for the sport of driving, but the entire buzz that was created around the Buddh International Circuit died down after just one race,” he said.

Colaco pointed out that there was ample infrastructure available for sports like basketball and football but the problem was lack of participation in these sports.

On the subject of how the popularity of a certain sport is sometimes higher than that of the other simply because of the buzz around it, Colaco said, “Basketball is a hugely popular sport in the US but pales in comparison to NFL in terms of viewership. However, the social media buzz created by basketball is twice that of NFL.”

With nearly 3,000 basketball matches every season, they see a huge turnout with ticket sales higher than 90 per cent. “The most important thing for the game of basketball is the experience and the way the game is played; this sport is very fast and is played in small quarters with loads of action, along with mid-session performances and celebrities often seen at the matches,” said Colaco.

Speaking on behalf of the broadcasters, Kukreja said, “We will continue doing our bit to help promote and get the right exposure for other sports apart from just cricket, but it’s also important that the different federations along with the government come together to help push and cultivate a sporting culture in the country.”

Bhimani reiterated Kukreja’s views by drawing a parallel with cinema. Just like there are independent film makers and art house directors vying for screens, sports other than cricket too deserve the right push and visibility in the market.

  • GroupM ESP India and SportzPower launch sports sponsorship report 2014

GroupM ESP India and SportzPower launch sports sponsorship report 2014

MUMBAI: The sports & entertainment arm of GroupM, GroupM ESP and provider of sports business news and knowledge, SportzPower, have collaborated to bring the most comprehensive report on sports sponsorship.

The study will capture the trends and developments in the Indian Sports Industry from 2008 to 2013. The report for the Indian Sports industry, documents important events during these years including the emergence of league-format sports in India like the Indian Premier League (IPL), Hockey India League (HIL), and Indian Badminton League (IBL) and traces developments in the Indian sports industry when sports business was in its nascent stages.

Elaborating on the future of sports marketing in India, Group M south Asia CEO CVL Srinivas says, “This decade will transformational for Sports in India with a spectator base of over a billio n people, a dozen sports television channels beaming content round the clock and a rapidly growing list of keen corporates and brands waiting to invest in cricket and other alternate sports. The next few years marketing investment in sports will no longer be peripheral, and it will be paralleled with that of entertainment and mainstream cinema.”

The report examined advertising investments in Indian Sport from four angles – On Ground, Team Sponsorship, Athlete Management, and Media Spends, and offers a comprehensive overview of sponsorship in Sport. The key takeaway the study offers is as follows:

    ·    Spend in Sport in India are dominated by cricket, and within it the Indian Premier League in particular.

    ·    Sports marketing spends between 2008- 2013 advertising investments in Indian sport rose roughly two fold with a total spend of Rs 21.39 billion in 2008 which rose by 92% to Rs 41.1 billion in 2014.

    ·    The market is slotted to grow exponentially in the next few years with other sports like Football, Basketball, Distance Running, Golf, Motorsports, Tennis, Hockey, Badminton and Contact sports complementing the Cricket Story since  the real opportunity lies in these under-leveraged and monetized areas.

Focusing on the key developments expected in 2014, GroupM ESP national director sports and live events Vinit Karnik says, “Even though the IPL is off to a rough start this year, in the long run accountability, better corporate governance, more transparency, are all good for not just the IPL, but the BCCI too. The successful launch of HIL and IBL has set the stage for an action-packed 2014 as far as franchise-based leagues are concerned in cricket, football, hockey, badminton, tennis, wrestling and kabaddi. The big news of 2014 will be the inaugural edition of the IMG-Reliance-Star co-owned Indian Super League, which is set to bring all the bells and whistles associated with the IPL to football. There is also the commitment that IMG-Reliance, the commercial rights holders for football in the country, to improve the country’s top-tier soccer tournament. The I-League clubs will be hoping that IMG-R walks the talk on that front, though the prevailing sentiment is one of wariness as to what the future holds.”

SportzPowerco-founder Thomas Abraham further discusses the future of sports broadcasting inIndia, “Indian sports TV broadcasting was, is, and will continue to be dominated by Cricket for theforeseeable future, contributing to 80 to 85% of the total television sports media revenues. However, other sports are also gaining prominence, especially Football, though interest remains predominantly for international leagues/tournaments. That is expected as the I-League improves as a television- friendly product and also with the launch of the Indian Super League (ISL) later this year. Other sports such as Badminton and Hockey have also started making their presence felt because of improved performances  by  Indian  players  in  the  international  arena,  coupled  with  increased  investments flowing into the two sports due to the launch of the Indian Badminton League (IBL) and the Hockey India League (HIL) respectively.”

All in all, 2014 has more upsides than down. While there will be no Indian Grand Prix next year, there will be more leagues, sports like basketball are making rapid strides, and the whole wellness and fitness movement is gaining ever increasing traction, which in turn means more interest in sport as a participation activity and not just as spectator engagement.

  • BSB gets IPL broadcast rights for UK from 2015-2017

BSB gets IPL broadcast rights for UK from 2015-2017

MUMBAI: The audience in the United Kingdom will watch the Indian Premiere League on the British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) network as it has beaten the four-time broadcaster ITV to bag the rights of the series in the years 2015, 2016, 2017.

The decision was taken when the IPL Governing Council met in Bengaluru recently and BSkyB was awarded the telecast, internet and mobile rights of the Pepsi Indian Premier League, for the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, and the European territories for the three years.

In the UK, ITV4 was the sole broadcaster of the IPL for the past four seasons.

This would also be the first time that IPL will be shown on a subscription channel.

Sky Sports MD Barney Francis said: “It’s the cricket competition that everyone is talking about and from next year, only on Sky Sports can viewers follow the IPL live.  Sky Sports’ cricket coverage has never been stronger, offering something for everyone including the major Test playing nations, the best players and now the world’s richest competition.  We can’t wait.”
