MUMBAI: The wait is finally over for the cricket enthusiasts. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that the seventh edition of the Indian Premiere League (IPL) will start on Wednesday, 16 April 2014, and conclude on Sunday, 1 June 2014

From Wednesday 16 April to Wednesday 30 April, at least 16 matches will be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). For the period from Thursday 1 May to Monday 12 May, BCCI has approached the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, seeking permission to play IPL matches in India in cities where the polling has concluded in the respective state.

In the release issued to the press, BCCI remarked that it is extremely conscious of the various complexities involved, but hopes for a favourable consideration. The Board will abide by the decision of the authorities in this regard. If it is not possible to play in India during this period, IPL matches will be held in Bangladesh.

From Tuesday 13 May (once polling has concluded in all states), the remaining league matches plus the Playoffs will be played in India. There will be no matches scheduled on the counting day, that is Friday, 16 May

ICC Chief Executive David Richardson today welcomed the decision of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to stage Indian Premier League (IPL) 2014 matches in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). “The BCCI’s decision to stage the first part of the IPL 2014 season in the UAE is great news for the people of the UAE and the region. Richardson, who is based in the UAE at the ICC headquarters in Dubai Sports City, said the ICC was ready to support the successful staging of the IPL 2014 matches in its home country.

“Recognising the importance of the integrity of the competition, the ICC will provide its full support for the matches in the UAE, including through the provision of anti-corruption services. It will also be a good opportunity for both the BCCI and the ICC to share knowledge and experience as we both strive to deliver memorable events to cricket fans around the world.”

starsports.com witnesses huge traffic during IPL 7 auction

MUMBAI: The digital arm of Star Sports – starsports.com – seems to be living up to its claim of being known as the YouTube of sports in India. The portal witnessed a huge traffic when it streamed the two day auction of the Pepsi Indian Premiere League (IPL) 2014 with five-minute delay.

The reach of the auction managed to outmatch Sony Six’s 2013 Pepsi IPL player auction numbers, claims the website as it attracted close to 680,000 visits over the two days.

Last year, the IPL auction on Sony Six witnessed traffic of 404,000 viewers with average time spent being 25 minutes in the male SEC ABC 15+ demographic.

In comparison, starsports.com reached 387,000 viewers with average time spent on the web being 31 minutes on each day.

Star India EVP and head new media Ajit Mohan said: “We had decided to produce a high quality show around the auctions, with commentary and analysis from Harsha Bhogle and Sourav Ganguly. This is a vindication of our approach. The Indian consumer is evolving fast and more and more consumers want to catch action while on the move. We are convinced that this year, the mobile screen will be where the action will be for IPL.”

The highest growth in traffic was seen in the first session of the auction on 12 February when marquee players like Yuvraj Singh and Kevin Pietersen were going under the hammer. The traffic peaked at 3 pm on 12 February. And almost 60 per cent of the traffic was from sports fans between the age of 18-24 years, and almost all of the traffic was in the coveted male demographics.

starsports.com is India’s first multi-sports digital service with availability across the web and mobile. Powered by live and video rights, it covers the best of world sports including major cricket tournaments, BPL, La Liga and Serie A in football, F1, hockey and tennis. This year, for the first time, all IPL matches will be available on the portal after it won the online streaming rights from Indiatimes.com this time around.

IPL 7 auction ends; 154 players sold including 50 international

MUMBAI: The two-day auction for the Indian Premiere League (IPL) finally came to an end. The auctions turned out to be much like the earlier six seasons – a heady mix of surprises, shocks, set-backs and happiness.

The happiest of the lot was obviously Yuvraj Singh, who came aboard Royal Challengers Banglore for a hefty sum of Rs 14 crore. Even Delhi Daredevils coughed up Rs 12.5 crore to pick up Dinesh Karthik and Rs 9 crore for Kevin Pietersen using its right to match card.

The right to match or the joker card worked wonders for the franchises this time as they managed to reclaim some of their ‘priced possessions’. Most of the teams used up their right to match card on day one of the auction itself, being aware that day two was consisted of the uncapped players.

Out of the 154 players sold, 80 are capped and 74 are uncapped; again proving the purpose of the IPL – to nurture young and raw talent and provide them an international stage to play alongside and learn from the best in the business.

The auction started on Wednesday morning with 514 players going under the hammer in two days. The sad part: nearly 70 per cent of the players went unsold.

The dark side came to the fore when nobody bid for players like Mahela Jayawardena, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Angelo Mathews, Marlon Samuels, Brett Lee, Cameron White, Luke Wright, David Hussey, Praveen Kumar, RP Singh, Darren Bravo, Dirk Nannes and among others. While the reasons to it would be best known to the franchises, it just brought out the ugly side of the game.

Now all that remains to be seen is whether the season 7 of the IPL can overshadow the dark history of the controversies that plagued season 6.

With the biggest pool of players to have gone under the hammer in all the seasons so far, IPL 7 is all set to keep you hooked to your television sets for a roller coaster ride once again beginning from April.
