#Retrace2021: The emergence of new advertiser categories in sports genre

Mumbai: As LIVE sports returned to Television in full swing in 2021, several new categories of advertisers also dived in to make the most of the opportunity to establish a connect with consumers. From e-pharma, gaming, cryptocurrency to several new-age brands flocked the TV space with a marketing blitz.

“There is a deep connection between sports and youth, and the latter is undoubtedly among the first adopters of technology. So, no wonder why a plethora of consumer tech brands are dominating the mass sports broadcasting airspace,” says Wunderman Thompson Delhi senior VP and managing partner Joy Chauhan. “For them, the biggest metric of success is how fast they can scale up their brand and operations. Big sporting brands and Bollywood celebrities are just what the media planning doctor ordered for them.”

Sample this: According to the latest Barc India report, out of the total 4,624 brands that advertised on TV in October, as many as 1,065 were new ones. While legacy brands such as the durables and automobile brands stayed strong, several new ones made splashes with significant increases in investment in the sports sponsorship space.

According to Pitch Madison Advertising report published in February early this year, ed-tech firm Byju’s spent Rs 400-500 crore in advertising in 2020 while gaming firm Dream11 spent Rs 350-400 crore and My11Circle spent Rs 150-250 crore. The trend continued this year as millions of people tuned into cricket, football, and other sports events throughout the year.

Despite the pandemic-led disruptions, the sports scene in 2021 saw some big impact properties reigniting the LIVE sports action on Television. From the 14th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to ICC T20 World Cup, India-New Zealand series, Indian Super League (ISL), and the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) – all boosted the presence of new advertisers powering the revenue growth.

Online gaming, ed-tech, and crypto brands drive Ad-ex

The contribution of these companies to the overall adex has also been steadily growing each year with new categories such as online gaming and ed-tech driving the adex in 2021.

According to DDB Mudra Group country head and managing partner – Integrated Media Rammohan Sundaram, new-age consumer tech companies contribute nearly 50-55 per cent of the adex on sports. “Look at the number of brands and their frequency on TV – PayTM, Cred, Upstox, CoinDCX, Byjus, Unacademy, Upgrad, MPL and others have ensured the growth of TV advertising, sponsorship in sports and celebrity endorsements,” he explains. “This is visible not just on TV but also on digital due to the nature of the business of streaming sporting events on devices. My guess is that around Rs 4500-5000 crore come from new-age companies into sports marketing alone.”

Industry experts also highlight the advantages that an Indian consumer offers especially in terms of consumer loyalty and long-term affinity. With the youngest population in the world, where 65 per cent of the total 1.3 billion are below the age of 35, India is considered the largest market economy in the world.

    Building Mass Reach

When such a denominator is at play, how does a consumer-tech company build its momentum? It does that by being omnipresent through reach and high frequency, through a medium that still continues to build new audiences outside of the urban population- and that medium is TV. Experts cite this as one of the prime reasons why big brands in e-commerce and other new categories continue to plough millions of dollars on television.

Going by the consumption patterns of this young audience, and a definite outcome that makes for a wholesome experience, the Sports genre delivers the highest GRPs (gross rating point measuring impact). Thus, making it worthwhile for these new-age companies to bet on so that the required adoption of their products happens in their desired target sets.

“At least 60 per cent of Unacademy’s advertising spends is allocated to TV to capture the growing internet populace and make them adopt their offerings early so that they can stay locked in for a longer period of time. Most of the loan-to-value (LTV) for such (EdTech) brands is strong because of the number of years these platforms can lock their consumers with high-quality educational content and experience through their product offerings,” says Sundaram. “So even if they have a very high customer acquisition cost, it really doesn’t matter much because eventually they not only recover but make a lot of profit from one customer, leading to an eventually profitable business simply because of the duration a customer stays attached with the brand.”

That may not hold true for eCommerce, or Crypto, however, which is a different ball game altogether. So, while there may be different consumer behaviours associated with these new-age brand categories, all of it makes media investments in Sports advertising, parking a sizable chunk of their annual ad budget, worthwhile given the sheer size of the addressable audience that is available for these new-age brands in such a large market economy.

According to dentsu India chief client officer Narayan Devanathan, brands in these categories are the ones which are flush with funds, and they are looking to generate awareness very quickly, backed by a lot of ad spends—and the properties with the most impact for this task are the sports-related ones. “The emergence of these advertisers is so visible is primarily because they have received a disproportionate share of attention and capital from VC firms in this time period. And they are now spending that capital to garner a disproportionate share of attention from their potential customers,” he opines.

Turning to Social Media for the boost

Even as Sports continues to attract eyeballs, the ‘new normal’ and digital advancements coupled with the social media expansion have brought new possibilities for brands to increase their visibility and improve their sponsorship message. And this time, with back-to-back IPL and T20 World Cup leagues aligned with the festive season, the brands went all out investing in the sport on TV and OTT platforms to be where their audiences are.

E-commerce brands were the biggest spenders during the first leg of IPL 2021 in April-May and an increase in the number of fantasy gaming apps were observed during the league, as per HI-CRICKET, a proprietary IP report by Havas Media Group India.

Digital stock brokerage Upstox recently beat online investment platform Groww to become the official partner of the Indian Premier League (IPL), joining startups such as fantasy sports platform Dream11, e-payments firm Cred and ed-tech startup Unacademy. The latter is also sponsoring the T20 tournament, apart from IPL, and currently working on Olympics and other branded content-led partnerships across different forms of sports, the company disclosed earlier.

Pro Kabbadi League, which returned after two years on 22 December has online pharmacy platform Netmeds.com and Dream11 as sponsors. Recently e-gaming platform WinZO which aims to build a community of gamers and gaming influencers in Tier 2 to tier 4 cities in India, also secured the principal sponsorships for two major Vivo Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) teams, Bengal Warriors and Gujarat Giants, as well as associate sponsorship for Patna Pirates. Meanwhile, the Indian Super League (ISL) has sponsors including Dream11 and Policybazaar.

With the year drawing to a close, let’s see how these new-age brands up their game in 2022!

Vi was ‘buzziest’ brand in IPL ’21 phase 1, Dream 11 in phase 2: Wavemaker report

Mumbai: Popularity and excitement around IPL in India continue to grow year on year. This time, social chatter around the tournament grew by 33 per cent over last year and crossed 80+ million mentions this season, according to an IPL 2021 report presented by Wavemaker India. The report which captures the social conversations around this season’s IPL, for both first and second phase, found that the first phase which was played in India garnered more mentions (42 million) than the second phase (38 million) which was played in UAE recently.

The study has been done by Wavemaker Mesh – the real-time data Intelligence solution that reads real-time environmental signals. The first Phase refers to matches played in India from 9 April to 2 May and the second phase refers to matches played in UAE from 19 September to 16 October.

Telecom brand Vi was the ‘buzziest’ brand in the first phase of the event, even as it continued to engage fans with ‘Fan of the Match’ activity during IPL hours, said the report. After Vi, it was Vivo, Unacademy, Cred, and Dream11 that created buzz on the advertiser leaderboard.

In the second phase of the IPL this year, Dream 11 emerged as the ‘buzziest’ advertiser, even as Vivo, Unacademy, and Dream11 maintained their leader spot in the top five. Paytm and Ceat were the new advertisers in the top 5 buzziest advertisers, as per the findings of the report.

Cred’s popular ad featuring Rahul Dravid as ‘Indranagar Ka Gunda’ was the most viral advertisement this IPL season. According to Intuition Intelligence, the agency’s partner on creative analytics solutions, the ad received a Virality Grade (VG) of eight which is amongst the most viral ad in the ecosystem. After Cred, the ‘This Is How We Roar’ ad by Myntra featuring MSD, Jadeja, and Bravo was second on the leaderboard with a VG score of 57.

In the second phase, the Cadbury Dairy Milk cricket stadium ad #GoodLuckGirls with the nostalgic and gender-empowering take on their 90’s ad emerged as the most viral ad.

Tellingly, amongst the top 10 viral ads on IPL in the second phase, five ads were by fantasy sports platform, Dream 11.

Fourth-time IPL winner Chennai Super Kings, led by skipper MS Dhoni was the most buzz-generating team in IPL 2021 and drove maximum chatter around the event & the matches, with a  clear spike seen in matches where CSK is playing any other team.

Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, and Rohit Sharma have been adjudged the most popular players this season, as per the report.

With IPL over on 15 October, the study also shifts gears to the ongoing ICC WC 2021. Since the end of IPL, there are already 1.2 million mentions around the T20 World Cup, with nearly 50 per cent mentions being on the much-touted Ind Vs Pak match played on 24 October, says the report.

The analysis, based on multiple data points, was collated to create meaningful and actionable insights by Wavemaker India. • In a role reversal, Kapil Dev does a Ranveer Singh for Cred

In a role reversal, Kapil Dev does a Ranveer Singh for Cred

Mumbai: Cred does it again! It has made veteran cricketer Kapil Dev do the unthinkable…strut around on a cricket pitch in costumes bordering on the outrageous, mouthing lines that would give seasoned Bollywood actors a run for their money! The credit card payment app, which is an official partner of Vivo IPL, launched its latest ad featuring the legendary cricketer in a spanking-new persona, ahead of the IPL 2021 finale.

The film showcases the 1983 World Cup captain channeling his inner Ranveer Singh, just as the Kapil Dev biopic “83,” headlined by the Bollywood star is all set to hit the theatres this Christmas.

Conceptualised and executed by Early Man Films production agency and content creator Tanmay Bhat’s AIB team, the film was shared by the latter on his social media handle with the words: “The biopic you want to see.” Bhatt even tagged the actor on his Instagram post saying, “Beating you to the biopic @ranveersingh,” even as the film takes inspiration from the actor’s personal style, known for his flamboyant persona and quirky dressing and who has never shied of wearing what most people would consider being edgy, unconventional, over-the-top costumes in public.

The creative, the latest in Cred’s IPL 2021 campaign ‘Cred: Great for the Good,’ carries forth the payment app’s recently built-up legacy of quirky ads featuring present and past celebrities in never-before-seen avatars, and follows the by-now-familiar routine of Jim Sarbh taking up the first ten seconds to extol on the app’s features. He ends it with “Now that’s as crazy as imagining Kapil Dev act as Ranveer.” Cut to Kapil Dev donning Ranveer-inspired getups and prancing around on the cricket field with swag.

The video ends with a voiceover that goes “pooch teri maushi se kya hua 83 mein” (Ask your aunt what happened in ’83) when the cricketer’s seriousness to the game is questioned. 1983, as every Indian fan worth his salt knows, was the year when the Indian cricket team led by Kapil Dev lifted the World Cup trophy.

From its earlier tongue-in-cheek ‘not everyone gets it’ series to the latest ‘great for the good,’ Cred seems to have, of late, perfected the art of breaking the internet with its creatives. The Rahul ‘Indiranagar ka Gunda’ Dravid to the unlikely boy band of Venkatesh Prasad and Javagal Srinath among others are cases in point.

The credit payment app successfully kicked off its second installment of the IPL 2021 campaign last month with its much-talked-about, viral Neeraj Chopra ad, which had the young Olympian display his acting chops.

And from the looks of it, the brand has nailed it once again! The Kapil Dev film has already garnered two lakh plus views on YouTube alone, less than 24 hours into its release.

  • Fi walks the talk on smart ways to save money

Fi walks the talk on smart ways to save money

Mumbai: Online banking platform Fi has launched its latest campaign during the Indian Premier League (IPL) season with a difference. With disruptive thinking being at the core of startups like Fi, the neobank has come up with a fresh take on the conventional television commercial.

The campaign urging users to ‘save smart’ is a set of PowerPoint (PPT) presentations that air as ads that break the clutter. Built for the digital-first generation, Fi makes finance more accessible to users. The ad itself is focused on its target audience of upwardly mobile salaried millennials and working professionals who have been stuck at home creating PPT presentations for their work. Executed entirely on PPT, the campaign is live across Disney+ Hotstar, YouTube, and Instagram for the duration of the latest season of the IPL.

“The IPL is a fairly high-decibel, high-energy event on TV. Brands (us included in the past) spend big money on producing and airing ads. We were looking at ways to say that Fi is a savings account that’s all about saving smart,” stated Fi cofounder and CEO Sujith Narayanan. “Fi’s features help users save smart through unique and intuitive ways that users will enjoy. Our campaign sort of walks that talk, by airing the ad in the form of a presentation, a tool we’re more than familiar with by now thanks to working from home for a year and a half.”

CoinSwitch’s latest campaign is a take on disclaimers in finance ads

Mumbai: Cryptocurrency investment platform CoinSwitch Kuber has launched a two-film campaign during the IPL cricket season. Conceptualised by The Script Room, the campaign aims to create a positive awareness around Bitcoin, while positioning the crypto platform as a premier crypto trading platform and a thought leader in the category.

The creative is hinged on the disclaimers in financial services advertisements while giving it a creative twist. The films have been crafted in the form of shorter duration ads targeted at the cricket-viewing audience.

“Financial services advertising is most often done with a lot of gravitas, seriousness and generally in the emotional territory. The entire Cryptocoin being a relatively new category we thought we should try something that’s really cool and fresh,” said The Script Room co-founder Ramsam. “The creative is basically a take on the usual disclaimers that come along with finance ads and we have given it an interesting twist.”

“Combined with ambitious goals and a high-energy team, it’s no surprise that we were able to co-create some really exciting and bold work,” said co-founder Ayyappan Raj. “It’s a pleasure working with Swati & her team at CoinSwitch, they really regard and celebrate good ideas.
