Indian talent shines as International Emmys span record 26 countries

MUMBAI: Indian performers have secured three coveted nominations for the 2025 International Emmy Awards, with Punjabi singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh earning recognition for his performance in Amar Singh Chamkila and the film itself competing in the TV Movie/Mini-Series category. The third nominees is in the kids animation category where Vaibhav Studios’ Lamput has been nominated.

The nominations, announced yesterday by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, span a record 26 countries with 64 nominees across 16 categories. India joins an eclectic mix including traditional powerhouses Britain, Germany and France alongside emerging markets such as Kenya, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Dosanjh’s portrayal of the legendary Punjabi folk singer in Netflix’s biographical drama has earned him a spot in the best performance by an actor category. He faces competition from Britain’s David Mitchell for Ludwig, Spain’s Oriol Pla for Yo, adicto and Colombia’s Diego Vasquez for One Hundred Years of Solitude.

The Amar Singh Chamkila film, produced by Window Seat Films for Netflix, will compete against Germany’s Herrhausen: The Banker and the Bomb, Britain’s Lost Boys & Fairies and Chile’s Vencer o Morir in the TV movie category.

“As the International Emmys continue to recognise the very best in television, the creativity and calibre of this year’s nominees, from a record 26 countries, reflect the global strength of our industry,” said the academy’s president & chief executive Bruce Paisner.

The nominations showcase television’s increasingly global nature, with South Korea’s Chicken Nugget competing in comedy, Australia’s beloved Bluey nominated for children’s animation, and Qatar’s Al Jazeera earning recognition for its Gaza coverage.

Winners will be announced at the 53rd International Emmy Awards gala in New York on November 24th, following the World Television Festival from November 21st-23rd. The ceremony’s partners include Dubai Studios, Brazil’s Globo and Turkey’s Ay Yapim, underlining the awards’ international reach.

Britain leads with seven nominations across multiple categories, while streaming giants Netflix and Disney+ dominate the platform landscape. The breadth of nominated content—from Turkish telenovelas to Finnish children’s programmes—reflects television’s role as a universal storyteller transcending borders and languages.

  • John Oliver to host International Emmy Awards gala in New York

John Oliver to host International Emmy Awards gala in New York

MUMBAI: The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has got comedian/writer John Oliver on board to host the 41st International Emmy Awards Gala, on 25 November at the Hilton New York Hotel.

The man who made his mark as a correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and sat in for him in the hosting chair over the summer, will host the event for the first time.

“We’re delighted to have John Oliver and his unique comedic talent headlining our Gala this year,” said International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences president and CEO Bruce L. Paisner. “We are delighted John is following up his very successful hosting of the Daily Show with the International Emmys.”

After being a writer and correspondent for the Daily Show with Jon Stewart since 2006, Oliver filled in Stewart’s seat as guest host this summer for two months. Oliver has been nominated as a writer for both Emmys and Writers Guild Awards and has won the Breakout Award at the HBO US Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen. His most recent credits also include hosting four seasons of his own stand up series for Comedy Central, John Oliver’s New York Stand Up Show. Along with Andy Zaltzman, he also writes and hosts the weekly podcast The Bugle.

Over 1,000 international media and entertainment executives convene on New York each year for the International Emmy Awards Gala. In addition to the presentation of Emmy Awards for programming, the Academy will present two special awards.

Film and television creator/writer/director J.J. Abrams will come to New York to receive the 2013 International Emmy Founders Award. RTL Group Co-CEO and RTL CEO Germany Anke Schäferkordt will receive the 2013 International Emmy Directorate Award.

This year’s Gala partners are: Phoenix Satellite Television, TV Globo, Microsoft, Dori Media Group, Ernst & Young, Deluxe, Mipcom, Sofitel Luxury Hotels and Variety.

  • BBC News triumphs at International Emmys

MUMBAI: BBC News has won won two awards in the news categories of the International Emmys. The BBC’s coverage of last summer’s Lebanon conflict won the International News award.

A current affairs commission took the only other international award for Baghdad: A Doctor’s Story which was broadcast on BBC Two as part of the This World strand.

Guardian Films made the documentary with Ben Summers producing and with assistance from the BBC News Baghdad team. Louise Norman was the executive producer for This World.

Baghdad: A Doctor’s Story was shot by an Iraqi doctor in a Baghdad emergency room. He agreed to film his own hospital anonymously to bring the truth about the civilian casualties to light.

The 28th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards ceremony was held in New York. Media industry executives, journalists, and producers attended the event which honours outstanding achievement in television journalism by individuals and programmes, distributed via broadcast, cable and broadband.

BBC director of news Helen Boaden said, “Our overall coverage of the Lebanon conflict was an outstanding collaboration between teams across all platforms and this award recognises the journalistic excellence of BBC News.

“Baghdad: A Doctor’s Story by Guardian Films was a brilliant commission by Current Affairs. It took a lot of nerve and tremendous bravery on the ground, to deliver this extraordinary and memorable film.”

  • International Emmys judging: BAG Films’ ‘Siddhant’ through to Finals

International Emmys judging: BAG Films’ ‘Siddhant’ through to Finals

MUMBAI: The Indian entertainment industry is looking at a brighter tomorrow as BAG Films’ Siddhant has qualified in the drama category for the final of the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ 34th International Emmy Awards.

The semi final round was conducted in Mumbai today and saw a 19-member jury scan entries in four categories – comedy, non-scripted entertainment, drama series and children and young people (the latter two being new additions from last year’s judging).

India is among a select few countries like Germany, New Zealand, Australia, Qatar and Greece to host the semi final rounds of this event. The jury comprised different representatives from the television fraternity in India including Abhimanyu Singh, Archana Puran Singh, Ashwini Yardi, Asit Modi, Ketki Dave, Mandira Bedi, Monisha Singh, Nachiket Pantvaidya, R D Tailang, Ravi Kiran, Ram Kapoor, Ravina Raj Kohli, Ritu Goel, Sanjeev Sharma, Shristi Arya, Siddharth Kak, Smriti Irani, Supriya Pathak and Suresh Bala.

In essence there seemed to be a consensus among jury members that there was a dearth of Indian content due to sheer lack of awareness among producers and TV channels alike.

International Emmy Awards Semi-Finals host Anil Wanvari with International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences director, Emmy judging, Sandy Clark.
Speaking to Indiantelevison.com, Walt Disney Television International (India) executive director production and programming Nachiket Pantvaidya said, “Asian content was quite good as there seems to be a trend in programming particularly around the theme of magic and fantasy. However, Indian content was highly under represented.”

Having been on the jury last year as well, Contiloe Films Pvt Ltd CEO Abhimanyu Singh was of the opinion, “Indian entries are at par with the rest. However, there is a greater need to drive the Emmy’s forward through better marketing of the brand, to encourage greater participation.”

In response to the jury’s plea for greater awareness in terms of the procedure to enter the competition, the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences director, Emmy judging, Sandy Clark told this website, “There is a misconception that the Emmy’s is only open to US programming. However, there are no restrictions and thus broadcasters, directors, distributors and producers can all enter. We spread awareness through our website, via email and through events like Mipcom and MipTV to encourage entries from across the globe.”

Hopefully this year’s win, combined with word-of-mouth will provide an impetus to more Indian producers and TV channels to make a bigger entry next year. Speaking about B.A.G. Films’ achievement, Indiantelevision.com CEO and International Emmy Semi Final host Anil Wanvari said, “Siddhant making it to the final speaks volumes for Indian content and this will hopefully facilitate greater participation next year.”

The entries in the remaining categories shortlisted for the final round are as follows:

Comedy – War of the In Laws, TV Broadcasters Ltd, Hong Kong, China

Non-Scripted Entertainment – 1. Wisholang (My Wish) – Papawad (Forgiveness), GM Networks, Philippines
