DD channels shift satellite; to finally settle on Insat 4B

MUMBAI / BANGALORE: Doordarshan has shifted all its channels from Insat 2E to Insat 3A and Insat 3C. This follows a request from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) which is planning to create a demand for its other location frequencies besides 83 degree East.

While DD Sports, DD Bihar and DD West Bengal are now available on Insat 3C at the 74 degree East frequency, the rest of the DD channels including DD National, DD News and DD Sahyadri are placed in Insat 3A at the frequency of 93.5 degree East.

“This is a planned restructuring of traffic. AT Insat 2E’s 83 degree East frequency, we need capacity as we want to accommodate more customers,” Isro contract management and legal services director SB Iyer told indiantelevision.com.

Private broadcasters on Insat 2E will, however, continue to beam from that satellite as they are bound by an agreement with Intelsat. “Since private broadcasters have a contract with Intelsat, they are not shifting. Currently, it is only Doordarshan which has shifted its channels,” Iyer says.

Private broadcasters who are using Insat 2E include Aaj Tak, CNBC Aawaz, Channel 7, Headlines Today, Sab TV, ETV, Jaya TV, Asianet, Indiavision, Kairali, People TV and Amrita TV.

The DD channels will ultimately move to Insat 4B which is set for launch in July 2006. “We have shifted the DD channels temporarily on to these frequencies. They will later move to Insat 4B which is planned for launch in July,” says Iyer.

  • TV Today to get more pace with Tez

MUMBAI: The cat is out of the bag. Not content with dubbing Aaj Tak the country’s subse tez (fastest) channel in promotional activities, the Aroon Purie-controlled TV Today Network has decided to formalise the tagline.

The third channel from the stable, which was going by a working title of Surkhiyaan (headlines), has been finally christened Tez (meaning fast in Hindi).

The name has been shortlisted, probably, to allude to the fact that this channel would give news quickly. Tez, a Hindi language news channel, would be on the same platform as elder siblings Aaj Tak and Headlines Today — Insat 2E.

The channel, which has obtained most of the relevant government permissions necessary, is targeting a launch in the third week of August, but the plans might get delayed to early September, depending on the availability of boxes for the digital channel that has to be seeded in the market.
When contacted by Indiantelevision.com, the company refused to comment on the matter.

Although programming details relating to Tez are not forthcoming, broadcast industry sources indicate that the name suggests it would have elements of English sibling Headlines Today with emphasis on speed while delivering news.

The new product too would be digital free-to-air like Aaj Tak and Headlines Today.

Industry sources also pointed out that TV Today Network is looking at another channel, a Metro-centric product, which is slated to launch early 2006.

India to launch 7 satellites under Insat-4 series

As the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) readies the launch of its multi-purpose third generation satellite Insat-3A sometime in September or October, it is preparing to take a huge leap forward in the communications satellite arena. Seven satellites are planned under Isro’s next generation of Insat-4 series.

Insat-4A through Insat-4G with Insat-4D as a spare, is what is being envisaged. The transponder capacity has been worked out after a detailed evaluation of the projected requirements by various users, the Press Trust of India has reported.

    Isro currently has five satellites – Insat-2C, Insat-2DT, Insat-2E, Insat-3B and Insat-3C – in operation.
